I've had TONS of request for a Toontrack Superior 2.0 tutorial. Well here it is. This is a VERY simple tutorial with a preset so don't expect a video on how to eq drums with this and that. The preset that follows is pre-eq the Feared way. This tutorial is considered to be a good starting point for beginners/nooobs.
Enjoy and finally get of my back regarding sharing my Superior preset :D
To follow this tutorial you will need the Ola Englund preset(and optional the Midi file)
You can get those files under the Tutorials section at www.olaenglund.com
(Requires Toontrack Metalheads)
Requirements for this tutorial
Setting up Superior 2.0
Creating a Compressed bus
Adding Reverb
Using external samples with a trigger
End
Also if you want more of those awesome samples at the end check out lsddrums.bigcartel.com/
"Make shure that the signal is totally wet, like me h a h a ha"
lol Ola has a great sense of humour :)
wow. didn't know Victoria Beckham is able to mix so good.
I cry ever tim I watch this.
Sam Delanoe
I liked cuz i cry ever time too
Thanks 4 lik dis
+Sam Delanoe Lmao. This is grand.
+Sam Delanoe dank toontrack mem
When a video on metal drums starts with "Hi, I'm Victoria Beckham" you know its gonna be good lmfao. Ola you are the man.
This actually helped me so much. All my drums sounded so flat before but now they sound as fat as Victoria Beckham's bank account
I love Superior Drummer 2.0 to death; has made recording so much easier
@fluff191 you can't use the custom samples within Superior 2. As I showed in the video I use an external trigger to trigger the outgoing kick and snare. hope it makes sense.
@strey75 the extra samples that I use in the end are external recordings yes. It's not needed though! Toontracks samples are really good in superior 2.0 so getting the software is a really good starting point.
Love your videos dude keep em coming!!
@fearedse Thanks! No worries, I was simply curious about it before I placed an order :) Can't wait to have em arrive!
Thanks, Victoria!
without your tutorials i would not be a musician at all, this tutorial and one with recording metal guitars helped me alot to make some serious shit, thank you very much
Thank you so much man, I've been hoping you would do a tutorial on drums.
Total Asmness! Congrats with the DAR gig!
it sounds fine in the mix
Best part is "Hell Yeah, sounds pretty good already".
Awesome drum sound, great looking kid you got there, and the dog is just BEAST! LOL! Thanks for the tutorial Ola.
-Wulf
Thank you so much for these videos!
Awesome tutorial!!
These tutorials are good and crack me up (: Thumbs up!
I have worked with both. I liked EZDrummer myself. It's just how the name sounds. EZ!! They are easy to get good sounds. Superior Drummer is definitely more advanced and requires more tweaking. I'm more into setting it and forgetting it and EZDrummer did that a lot nicer than Superior Drummer. I'm sure you can get Superior Drummer to sound, well superior, but for me, I am more into easy. So take your pick do you want EZ drums or Superior drums?
lol -- now we want to compress the shiznet out of bus 2 -- I'm crying .. that was classic man. If you own a drummer? lol!
@simonpvo2 yes that's when you need to expand the auxes to reveal more channels(since it's a multichannel instance)
Pretty good s20 preset. thx for posting.
Thanks, informative and entertaining!
you are a comedian man :D
thanx for this tutorial, it helped me ALOT! \m/
figured it out last night. so when you open up superior drummer under the VST Instruments tab (im using Cubase 5 as my DAW), you must activate all the outputs so that the corresponding tracks for snare or cymbals show up on your tracks listing.
Good joooob!
That was entertaining and educational.
Cheers!
Ola you are awesome!!
you have to do it with multichannel
Go to devices/vst instruments, then put superiordrummer. After this click on the arrow pointing right and activate all outputs
@guitarcubeohyes now THAT is strange! I'm a canadian moose lover myself!
@fearedse Can't wait!
@cMaXeJIJIo Not to make it tighter, just to make it more alive.
The trigger software in this case is just for replacing/mixing samples. I promise If you put some heart(and skill) into it you can get metalfoundry to sound great.
Hahaha, Nice Ola! Riktigt bra tutorial! Here gött : )!
Ola, please do more tutorials, this shit is both hilarious and amazingly useful! do one for people who want to record using AxeFx-like preamps and doing sound emulation digitally.
very useful, thanks!!!
That Skwisgaar sure is dreamy Victoria!
Niiiiiice Ola! Thank you for this tuto ;)
Dude your a funny mo-fo, I love the dirty humor and thanks for the vid I just bought this so im sure it will come in handy :)
ive tried both. superior is way better if u are in to metal. addictive drums is more for pop/rock. also u have more control over mixing in superior as apposed to addictive. hope this helps
@ZOMB13 I dont know the guy who made these presets.. but it sounds like he used some other samples in the kit.. DFH stands for "Drumkit From Hell" a sample pack that toontrack makes for EZ drummer and I guess for Superior.
I use BFD (another drum plugin) so not totally sure if there are different versions of the DFH sample pack for superior and EZ drummer (same company) google it though thats what your missing.
Thank you so much!!!
Good one Ola
@ThunderBullitt hey dude, I don't know how to do it in Pro Tools :/
Also I've only tried the 6262 not the other one.
Wow I'm so helpful :D
Mad dog! They're still up!
mallorquina s ♡£♡€♧▲♣.;-▶☆
You rule Ola!
@MetalStormUnit I have a Vypyr 120 at home for testing right now ;)
Wow! Awesome videos! Thanks a lot! Can you show us how you actually create all those awesome drum beats? They kick ass! Thank you!
@CRANKYONE100 I bet PT9 has some sort of piano roll or midi-editor? That will do.
Thx it was helpful!
You usually program drum patterns via the piano roll in the DAW that you're using.
Still brilliant and fun! But I have to watch it a few times. It is not as easy as it seems, but it does work :)
funny and informative thats hard to accomplish
Subbed. Dude, that kick is awesome. Totally copying :)
@Siriusveien Logic9 !
@ipsyko nevermind, i figured it out. great video man!
EZDrummer works fine for me!
A Fearedse way to record metal vocals and home will be great!
@fearedse Please make a short videoclip of it, would love to hear how it sounds
this was one of a first video in internet i believe xD 02:40 - make sure signal is totally wet, like me, haha - a fckn classic ;)
You have to buy the right corresponding drum sounds at Toontrack, in this case SL-DFH. check it out...
Hell yeah! I was just looking at this program today. So how does it work exactly? Can you make loops obviously within the program and just record them like that or do you HAVE to load files in there for it to play? Also, it needs a program for a DAW, can Audacity do this? I have NO experience with software.
parallel compression in metal, sweet
Thanks!
do I need a midi controller,or can I get away without one?you rock Ola!!
Im trying to figure out that too atm. I have setup several busses, but i cant send my multioutputs to more than 1 bus it seems. Or at least i cant find the option to do it. Anyway Multioutput is easy to set up: Press F11 then loadup SD2.0. Then in the F11 window there is a small arrow next to the E (theese signs are all to the left of the box saying superior drummer. The arrow closest to the S in Superior is the one u want to click. Voila then u have multiout!
Hi Ola... this was awesome, but i would really like to know how do you build your own drum midi paterns??? Do you use some sequencer like hydrogen or what?
"make sure the signal is totally wet, like me" FUCKING priceless!!!
Awesome tutorial Ola, been meaning to improve my skills with superior drummer and this really helped! But for some reason when I send all my superior aux's to bus 2 I don't get any signal there (bus 2). Followed this video word for word and still no luck :(
Thank you, Posh Spice!
Hey victoria, what do you use as a midi controller when you initially make these patches?
Having issues loading the preset. Say's I'm missing "SL-DFH". I'm pretty sure it's not the EZX. Any one knows what it is/where can I find the library or if someone could make a version without it?
@MrRAZRBAKK When you create a bus the fader is at zero and the send level is at zero.. you have to send signal to the bus.. and then make sure the volume on the bus is on. No volume = no sound
The send that looks like the circle above the fader is most likely down.
of course! all they are is samples
@oCyfiuso You just place out the beats in the hyper-edit, or midi-roll.
Thank you..so much....
how do you program a midi track? thats what i would like to know....like do you sit there with a mouse and use the mouse and click method or do you use a midi controller? or guitar pro?
Ola you need to do EZ Bass next!!
Heya there Fear, curious - are the LSD samples a hardcopy mailed to ya, or digital download upon purchase by email?
Make sure the signal is totaly wet....like me hahaha....
Dude I almost cried laughing.
@fearedse hey blondie, I'm using PT 9 on PC but assume piano roll is just part of your logic DAW yeah?..so you manually clicked in all your drum beats then?, without one of those midi cheesegrater tool things?..I wanna buy SD2.0 like today but just hoping it's fairly simple to create the beats just with it and PT9?...doe shaving Ezplayer pro make it much easier?...cheers big ears....
Hey Ola, first off THANKS. My videos are a million times better thanks to you Fluff and long list of others. I downloaded your Superior preset twice (at two different times) one is from 2010 and one is from 2011 are they the same preset? I get error messages when I load either of them but they both seem to work. One tells me I need metalheadz and the other says I need DL-_ _ _ _. Thanks again!!
do you use any clipper on the drums?most people suggested GClip. unfortunately is not AU compatible. do you have other suggestions?
Yo broseph, I mean Victoria. I need to know how to set the midi track with all the multiple outs. I understand configuring the bus on the Superior side of it, but I need to know how to configure pro tools for all the outs. Please respond. Also for various types of metal, would you recommend the Bugera 333xl or 6262?
I put in everything with Logic Piano roll.
Would this method work the same way with Toontrack EZdrummer as well? I unfortunately don't have the money for Superior 2.0.
Many thanks for your very helpfull post!!! I've 1 doubt and wondering if you can help me. While using "The Metal Foundry" pack, i liked the option of "The Metal Foundry Mix" istead of "Default". However it's stereo (1/2 channel only) when i choose multi-out option, all the equalization, filters and compretion that made sound nice on Superior Drummer via Buses do not goes to my DAW (Sonar 8.5) how can i manage that? Many thanks for your time!!!!!
Great video. Do you have ProTools lessons available? Thanks!!
@fearedse that has one preamp 12ax7 right? how does that sound in the gain stages for the 6505, Rec, XXX, Dzl settings?
Is there a way we can still get access to this preset? It doesn't appear to be on your website anymore. None of the "presets" links on the Downloads page work.
Hey Ola! When I add a new aux 11, I set its input to Bus 2. Then when I route all the aux channels to bus 2 (which is aux 11), there's no output from there. I set the output on aux 11 as Stereo output. And also, when I add my auxiliary tracks, the superior drummer isn't selected as an input in all of them. HELP PLEASE!
Hey, when I try to load the preset the program gives me error: "You have loaded a project or preset that makes use of a sound library that you do not have installed, sl-dfh"
I also do have drumkit from hell installed.. what is the problem?
Wicked funny,,,and a GREAT Tutorial! You fucking ROCK!!!
Thanks, Ola!
Hey Ola :D I cant find the tutorial section neither a working link for downloading the presets from your blog. Did you intentionally dropped them ? Or its a technical problem ? Or is it me ? :P
Yo! The preset from the link went away. Any way to still download it from another link?
@fearedse We will give you the props and credit for it, promise :)))
thanks beckham :)
Hi Ola , sorry on your new site , the presets are not available , when you click on this : Toontrack Superior 2.0 files : link here nothing happens , could you please fix this, thanks so much. cheers.
so i take it that this is no longer available? there is no tutorial section on the site............... :(
The Main Stereo Out channel being constantly pegged in the red most of the time seems to help as well...
