    I've been messing around with MIDI drums for a bit over the last few years but it's only been little things here and there. All of these little tips and tricks definitely help when you're learning to program. After a while you do develop an ear and a feel for what goes where and how it should fit into a pattern. Thanks a ton, Bea!

    Thanks Rabea,
    I never looked up for any videos on drum programming and your video is my first. Been using Superior drummer 2.0 about a year and I never knew that we can channel the mics out to our DAW individually. Im using cubase 5 btw. Anyway thank you so much for have creating this video.

    Learned so much from these two vids. Thanks a lot man!
    One issue I have and I'm not sure you'd have an answer for me. But, I am taking my songs when I'm finished, to a buddy who has the old version of logic, (9) I believe.
    And the last time I took a track to him everything didn't transfer over like we had hoped. We had to bounce in place (I think it was) to get it over into his version of logic. So now that I have sent each drum mic to its own aux, for future projects that I bring to him, is there a way to get it into his version of logic that will give him the Aux's that I've created? Hope that makes sense. Either way thank you for the vids!

  • @brian_malota

    I might be missing something here but when I set up my output for instance "kick out" to output 3/4, in logic it' sends that same mic twice in two different aux channels so 2 of those 16 aux channel strips get used for one mic for some reason. Each aux channel isn't a different mic. It won't let me make one of those created aux's a single output channel. Please help!

    Great videos Bea! One question: I am running S2 multi out with all 16 AUX in Logic Pro X (routed to 6 separate outs 7-8/9-10/11-12 on my sound card going to an external desk)
    I see that you can SOLO the individual microphones (AUX tracks) in the Logic mixer something that doesn't work for me. Any idea whats wrong ?

    Awesome video man! Thanks for the help. All this stuff gives me a major headache but I'm determined says the old reel to reel analog man ;) I don't suppose you know how to load that template you made into reaper do you?

    • @JimmyA-2024
      @JimmyA-2024 8 років тому

      It loads in Superior ok but I think it's because I don't have all the drum kits you have I just have the basic rock kit came stock with Superior, so I can't really tell if I'm getting all the routing you set up. I made a couple templates for Reaper I thought were pretty good until I saw what you had going on and realized what I was missing was all those little extra drums sounds that really let you tweak the sound like you said to sound more real. I had the snare top and bottom was all. Another handicap I have is my interface is kind of old a Tascam 1200 with 6 inputs, so anything over that I have to use the virtual sends, which seems to be fine except for certain routing issues and latency drawbacks. What I really need to figure out is how to use the midi buses to be able to stream midi in real time and record it instead of having to do the step recording which i have hated since I can remember back in the day with the old DDR Boss and other kinds of drum machines, although it's a lot easier with the piano roll than having to program on a drum machine or keyboard lol. There was a Roland drum machine I can't remember the model but you could record and edit in real time using ur fingers on the little pads or on a keyboard by midi. There must be a way to do it on reaper or Cubase which I have both. What I noticed with Reaper, when you route the midi sends, you have to route from the virtual instrument track to your individual tracks, and then to get all those tracks grouped to one track that will record them all on that one track , then you have to route from your individual tracks to that master track which records the events and then you can edit it in step time , but not real time I don't think. You seem to have to edit manually the way you were doing it, but I may be wrong maybe there's a way to append to the file. But in order to hear it you have to route it to a master parent send and it's such a pain and latency and ugh. I noticed also you can't play the grooves from Superior and record them in real time, you have to drag all the different pieces in to the media track and then you can edit them in step time. That is unless maybe there is a way to do it though the midi buses... that's what I seem to be led towards and wanting to know more about. No wonder kids stopped playing lead guitar back in the 90's.... You don't find many real lead guitar players as much these days, or just straight up off the cuff live tracking studio musicians anymore. Because they don't even have to be a musician anymore to record songs, you just have to be a dang rocket scientist computer programmer! They never have time to sit and practice 8 hours a days like we did back in the day lol I keep thinking by the time I get this stuff all figured out, I'll be too old to play anymore! lol I'm already starting to get into this whole looping grooves thing and even got me a virtual female singer. Shoot, pretty soon musicians will be obsolete lol But I think it was greg Kihn who said "they don't write like that anymore"! That's why I'm on a mission to get all my songs recorded before I forget them lol It's almost 80 songs and my drummer who was my best bud and knew every song died 2 years ago and our other guitar player we all grew up together playing and writing went MIA years ago, so I have to do all the parts myself and duplicate it all by memory and then make it good enough to put on a few CD's. AND, after having lost everything I owned and having to start from scratch and work my way back up with little or no funds, it's been a challenge to say the least. But I'm like the Blues Brothers on a mission and I'm not stoppin' till I be droppin' lol So I really appreciate the videos you and some other guys put out there! It's been really helpful and If I can return the favor maybe by posting your pages or videos or something please let me know. I would be glad to return the love man! Thanks again and love the tunes you are making also. Awesome job on the videos and don't worry about no A.D.D A.D.H.D.'s with P.H.D's in how everyone should talk! That's the problem with this video game geek squad generation. They have way too much time on their hands and way too anal about everything especially when they hardly do anything except play on their ipads and obsess about the way people look or sound lol. My advice to them is get a job and move out of grandma's basement and go play in the dirt and they will find peace for their compulsive disorders lol Peace bro!

    Excellent stuff Bea as usual. Is it worth explicitly pointing out that drummers only have 4 limbs (usually! Rick Allen excluded!!) and so when it comes to hats etc don't blindly copy them and then add in cymbal hits later. Make sure you delete any hat hits where there are cymbals, as drummers don't ordinarily hit a crash and a hat on the same beat. I know you showed hats deleted on the crash hits, hit you didn't say it ;-) picky point but at all helps newbies learn our dark craft! :-)

    what does quantize mean?

    • @Johnporteriv
      @Johnporteriv 7 років тому +1

      It basically means that you're adjusting the music so that it doesn't sound robotic. This is mainly used for drumming so that when you use a drum machine program it wont sound like a machine. Drummers never consistently hit at the same velocity. So in essence you would want some notes that arent as loud as others to make it sound more natural. I hope this helps shed some light

    • @mcgarnacle21
      @mcgarnacle21 7 років тому

      I think you're slightly wrong here. Quantize means getting the midi hits to be more in time with a particular bar of time like 1/4 or 1/8. You're thinking of 'humanize', where the velocities and timing is slightly changed depending on an inputted value to make it sound more human.

    • @RabeaMassaad
      @RabeaMassaad  7 років тому

      kasey katusky in a nutshell, as a basic summing up, quantise means snapping something to a bar, or region. So by that I mean it makes something metronomically perfect.
      Then humanise would be technically making it imperfect by moving notes out of perfect quantising, as I doubt there are many (if any) humans that are metronomically perfect.

    Feel like you coulda saved a whole lot of time just by using some of Superior's actual midi grooves...
    Even if you wanted to 'finger drum' in your own kick and snares, you could have taken just the hats and cymbals out of one of the grooves and got an actual human performance in there.
