One of the few industries where the UK can still be considered a world leader.
And whilst Princess directly employ 3,300 people, the supply chains will employ an awful lot more.

I think the Netherlands is equal if not greater when it comes to building luxury yachts. Which is quite an achievement given their much smaller population.

Nick, this is quite simply an honest to goodness "access all areas" tour. What a privilege to have made the tour with you. And how knowledgeable is Ross who showed you around? Not only was he able to give the tour plus answer every question put to him, but he could identify every part being made and also the history of the shipyard. What an asset he is to Princess! Can't wait for the next episode.

As a Janner I have always been proud of Princess but this film has given me a completely different outlook on how important they are to Plymouth and the jobs/careers they provide. Amazing to see south yard as well. We often walk the dogs along the James Street, the other side of the wall from the Ropery and now I know what is there. Fascinating look at a part of the Ocean City's history that not many Janners are aware of and a film that could usefully be shared with the schools of Plymouth. Looking forward to part two.

Incredible insight into how the modern boat manufacturing has progressed,I used to work for Sealine, they made all the plugs by hand,no cnc,all the hulls and decks were hand lay and sprayed, and as for resin infusion,it never existed, but having spent many years experimenting with infusing small carbon fibre parts,to pull a vacuum and tons of resin into a mould and get 100% success, incredible feat of engineering,so many factors to take into account, not least temperature and related flow time.👏

A trip down memory lane. Princess is huge. Nearly 30 years in the industry. I really don't miss it. I miss the guys. Certainly don't miss the hours, the smell, the way it takes over your life.
I've spent the last 10 years earning less, breathing a lot more fresh air and being able to be there for my family.
Now I'm a self employed furniture designer/maker. Having now made pieces for Museums, Michelin starred restaurants & private customers.
There is a life after boat building and it can just as rewarding.
Just saying, if it wasn't for mortgages, there would be a lot less than 3300 employees. It's hard work, long hours, lots of stress. All that, to make someone else's dream boat. Get out, live your life.

Very interesting - it’s also impressive how much the sales director knows about the construction of the boats. It’s not necessarily something I’d have expected, although I suppose it must vary industry to industry!
    Looking forward to part 2.

I remember asking you soon after I started to watch your channel: 'Why do these boats cost so much?' Well, now I well and truly know! 35000 man-hours to build? 40km of wiring? 1.6 tons of something I can't remember, the numbers just kept on coming. The knowledge and enthusiasm of your guide was quite infectious and the scale of the operation was (as they might say in the states) 'super awesome'. Absolutely fascinating and I can't wait to see part 2. Cheers from a chilly Otford, Kent.
PS - As a hopeless watch-geek, I couldn't help noticing that your guide reinforced the nautical connection by wearing an Omega Seamaster. Sorry.

Absolutely fascinating. I thought I had a better understanding of what this entailed, and did for smaller boats and not these big luxury yachts. For me, retired USN, the naval history of the facilities is every bit as fascinating. Princess seems to be wonderful stewards of this. I almost didn't watch this, what a mistake that would have been. Thank you, Nick, for getting us in to see this amazing process, and thanks to Princess.

Nick, you said "absolutely fabulous" ... it was absolutely fantastic. Ross seems to be a wealth of knowledge about every facet of the operation - that's not always the case with sales folks, so very refreshing. As always Nick, this was hugely entertaining ... and now I get why these boats cost so much. Kudos to Princess, and special Kudos to you Nick. I've watched one or two other boating-related UA-cam clips, but your channel just seems so much better. Your camera work is really excellent. Your narration is so easy to listen to - a casual flow of information, just like chatting to a mate. And most importantly, the entertainment value means I keep coming back happily to watch the next. I'm just about to watch part 2. 🙂
