Seems like the crew did the best they could when it died, were on the radios immediately. Total loss of engine power but seems like the electronics were working as the radar and radios were working. Hate seeing a boat like that get stuck on the rocks.

I can't judge them here. I almost sunk my boat 2 summers ago and fell overboard in a lake just from being clumsy and panicking. Thankfully a few ppl helped me get it in after they seen me trying to swim it in. Shit can go south real quick on the water

I was in the blue boat and there is nothing we could have done. that boat was so heavy and I would have ripped something off if I tried to pull them off. They were on the wrong channel trying to call the coast guard but we called them about 3 min before they were able to reach them. Glad everyone was ok.

@@roberto0561 Key word - "Could" ,,,,,, If I wanted to, I could take my car in to get all the dings and scrapes fixed on my old Honda with 200k miles. Not saying my old car is worth what this boat is, but I'm saying is dings and scrapes doesn't constitute having to have work done. They left under their own power, so if it was major damage, they would have been tugged in.

What is another boat going to do? Nobody has a boat big enough to haul them away from all the rocks and heavy waves slamming them. You also have to stop and think that if another boat ties off to that boat they could end up endangering themselves as well and now you have more people who need to be rescued by the Coast Guard.
Not only did the fire rescue boat have a massive Samson post on the back for towing, everyone operating a boat knows there's very little power when pulling in reverse. Fire rescue should definitely know that.

Had to apply the force when a big wave came in and lifted it up off the rocks. I was also thinking that they could go forward at full speed and maybe rio the bottom of the boat. Lol. Sure those fire and rescue guys know what they are doing.

Yes! I would have tried getting in between the rocks and boat with my skull to cushion my stupidity. Love them panicking grabbing shit that don't matter all crazy like. Where's reverse? Ohh that was a little extra for that. We didn't get that. Your dad's probably wondering if we caught the big one today, we should call him I guess.
As a life long boater myself I would have to conclude there was some sort of systems failure here. These newer engines are all "fly by wire" where the engine throttle and gear and sometimes the steering are all computer controlled. I have seen several scenarios like this caused by some break between the steering wheel/throttles and the engines happened and the boat went where it wanted to. As to what could be done once the boat is on the rocks, not much without risking injury to the crew. That's a big boat and with no ability to control the power there is little they can do in those conditions. As long as the FBW controls have been out, I still prefer the old cable throttle and shift and traditional hydraulic steering on my boat.

Has to be you don’t get many novices buying Freemans. It looked to me his ballasts had water in them. Given the seas that day he would have. Maybe he should have emptied to get off rocks. Just speculation
@@jasonbelk7129 easy to steer when the fly by wire is not working? Tell me, how are you going to control the gears if the shifter dosnt select any gears? You can hear those engines rev up free, so the engines whre not in gear or he list all his props, in wich case he still has the same problem of not having any forward or reverse thrust.....

I had a tragic experience like that, VERY rough waves, it was horrible, it capsized, then my mommy drained the water out of the tub and all was better.
The rescue boat driver had some real skills to pull that off first attempt
i guess that radar didn't pick up the land mass ahead of them, either that or they should have bought the one with five motors.

I didn't understand why Fire & REscue didn't turn around so their stern was facing the rocks and the stuck boat and use their engines to pull forward. Way more power available. F&R almost ended up on the rocks themselves and were using their engines backwards. More training needed.

They had more control facing the rescue with the current and waves easier to turn boat away from rocks. They didn’t that much power to pull. Especially with the stuck boat being a cat and half of it still floating.
Such a dangerous recovery. And to have all the rescue people standing right in front of a rope under tension was just ridiculous. Bad technique.

Because if there is a much greater danger of a prop wrap if you tow off the stern. This way has less power, but keeps the line away from the props…
Locally we had one plow into the marsh, have also heard of other instances where a Freeman just stopped turning predictably. I don't know if it's a problem with the steering system or possible autopilot problems, but it does seem to be a problem that some of these boats suffer.
Seems like the captain just wasnt paying attention,heck those powerful engines were working&his steering as he was heading into the outlet.
Maybe with the wrong current it could happen. On the north side of inlet neer that opening and to Channel Market the current rips North east . Then your fighting a incoming tide riping ENEWhile getting sucked thru that small Pass ripping North . Lol Unfortunately Last year I was on North side of Jetty when a pelican flew into my Jig by mistake. My trolling motor shut off and Got sucked thru that opening . just missed that Pole and rocks. Never panic
Yes it's the haul turning is not very responsive the thrust in reverse half of the thrust goes down the hollowed haul stupid design so it fights it self for best results only power should have been applied to two right outboards just in my opinion
Operator error
Remember, when you go to help a boat in distress and tie yourself to it, you become legally responsible for that boat and any damages it sustains while you're attempting to help. And while the captain of the distressed boat may not hold you accountable for damages, knowing how cold hearted insurance companies are his boat insurance company probably won't be so forgiving. Tow companies are exempt from this clause.

Here's a thought how about a metal pole to try to keep you off the rocks instead of toilet brushes and other things that you would actually use in the boat? And I'm pretty sure you might damage those fishing poles as well which cost a whole lot less than a million dollars trying to keep the boat from hitting the rocks!
what I found amazing is that the entire ordeal was caught on camera. From cruising to rocks to being towed off. This was a real cliff hanger.
The inlet is being recorded nearly all day, every day. I'd be amazed if it wasn't recorded.

I just want to say the two guys on the rocks synced up there waves way to perfectly.
That was the Pilot's error, he came in too hot and overshot......and learned that boats don't have brakes.........I see it every day at my Marina, watching people dock(many haven't got any better over the years🙄).....I've never piloted a Freeman, but this particular hull design would make it even less maneuverable, off-plane, as he came hard off the power and the hull digs in, 4 closely spaced propellers cavitating like mad in reverse.......those twin hulls acting like sailboat dagger boards.....so the boat just goes straight! We've been stuck on sand bars in Tampa Bay and threw our anchors into deeper water to pull ourselves off. Throw an anchor, pull, throw another anchor, pull until you're clear. May not have worked here but I would at least have tried it.
If you were able to pull your boat out of the sand bar using the anchor, you don't know what being stuck is.

the pacific can be anything but what it was named after by Magellan making a passage sometime in the 1500s around the world. Pacifica's meaning tranquil is in itself a needle found in a haystack the size of earth is more like the odds to bank on for it being your lucky day for comin in after noon on a tranquil flat ocean. i bought a aluminum 23ft StarCraft stern drive cabin lookin thing that resembled a cheap Winnebago for 3000 bucks from a ex Chevrolet master mechanic, the motor was brand new from his rebuild, the sterndrive cable was corroded stuck and didn't have reverse. i ran that just like that for 8 months 2 times a week (i had quit my job on account of yellowtail running rampant in 98, plus white seabass bonito dorado(that never hit,) barracuda that all went for over the length limit, out of all so cal harbors. now the gift i had acquired was patience, timing an unparalleled accuracy in forward and neutral gears. because every day in the afternoon you had tail wind at least 8kts. in the busiest public launch ramps, after a case of Budweiser and a boatload of fish, made every reason why not to go to work was an important part of life experiences that kept it no.1 on my list. never hit another boat. it's a good training operation to see far ahead of time in all kinds of conditions, rain, high surf, dive equipment scattered all over the bloody deck and all but a few beers could be found aboard the vessel Overcast. it was a workhorse that with almost nothing of maintenance to be ready by the next 4 am alarm. to go out again. i pulled it by a truck that had not good brakes, and the heaven sent single axle trailer had a bad seal lip that would empty the grease per trip, and the wheel would start wabbling just before it was gonna fall off. i towed to cabo san lucas one time for stipers and dodos.

At the 17 or 18 second mark you can see the captain turn hard to port (which was necessary to compensate for the heavy wave action and Northward current), but only the two starboard-side engines appear to react accordingly. The two port side engines remain straight. You can very clearly see this asymmetrical engine arrangement at the 32 second mark.
I see it. He should have shut down the two unsteerable engines. It's possible he had a steering system that allowed differential control of the two sets of motors. Great for docking and super slow control. I've seen setups that have a joystick for docking and the standard wheel for cruising.

Same concept as flight 1549… people criticized the pilots decision only because they knew the outcome. Stuff happens so fast where there is not enough time to run through a check list. “is my steering ok, are my engines ok- oh just hit the rocks”
Do a little looking around, Freemans specifically seem to have this problem here and there.

@@jn4897 Not a fluke, but not very common, but definitely a mechanical or software problem with Freemans. I'm not in the business and even I have heard of at least 3 boats doing this.

listening to the hull impact and drag across the rocks must have been gutwrenching. hopefully the repairs weren't as bad as it looked. stay safe people.
You can steer a multi engine boat without ever turning the wheel
You can also wreck a boat on rocks - rocks win every time
assuming you have multiple throttles. The quad I have been on only had 1 throttle for all 4 engines
Yes but it’s not so much easy with 15 mph wind and 4 footers
And with a cat the engines are so far outboard that they can spin on a dime.

At least that guy ties every rope on the boat together…
To me it looks like his port steering was disengaged and his starboard steering was still working. On a catamaran boat like this the port and starboard engines have separate electronic steering. The starboard engine being turned hard to port was not strong enough to turn the boat onto proper heading and once the captain realized this he threw both port and starboard engines in full reverse. TBH I would have done the same thing. Not much else you could do here given the speed he came into the inlet. Had he been going about 10 knots slower he probably could have thrown his port engines in reverse bringing the bow to port and completing the turn. For everyone saying "he should have been going slower" a slower ride would not have allowed him to maintain a safe dry heading given the heavy current and cross wind across the inlet.

@@jeffk464 typically yes unless that obstacle is two jetties at the inlet that has deep water in the channel and shallow water on the outside edges creating big short interval waves in the inlet that come over the bow of your boat at slow speeds. You can either bow down and plow through at faster speed if you have the length to gap the wave sets or trim up slow down and use accessory power to ride the back of the following waves (if its an incoming tide).

Alot of these newer boats use fly by wire throttles and electronic steering....Technology can be pretty nice, but it can also come with a price....and sometimes it has issues....I believe that's what you will see here....something with the steering went, you can see when he realized it wasn't turning, he tried to stop by slamming them into reverse.....I also wouldn't be surprised if one or two of those VRods ingested some water by doing that, but he really had no other options at the time.

Yep, I was on a nice twinvee going AJ fishing and the boat basically shut of and had to reboot everything then it was back to normal. Couldn't believe it. Captain says it happens from time to time....

I'll stick with hydraulic steering.....
As a former member of the RNLI & Royal Navy, that was hard to watch! Glad the crew and boat are ok! The fact that the hull of that cat stayed intact, despite the constant crashing against the rocks, is testament to its great build quality. Your fire and rescue service did a great job! Not sure whether those cats have windlasses on them, but the only thing they could have done was to throw the anchor as far away from the boat as possible and then tried to pull themselves off of the rocks with the windlass. In those situations, the mind races and it's hard to formulate a plan.
Any effective anchor on that boat would weigh 80 pounds or more. Not a lot of guys can throw something that awkward very far. I can’t imagine how you came to the conclusion that fire rescue did a great job though. Watch what he did again. His positioning of his vessel and choice of line attachment was poor at best at every turn.
Likely the anchor was quite heavy and it would be difficult to throw it any appreciable distance and you would definitely not get the angle needed to have the anchor set and by the time it did set it would probably be under the boat and pull straight up
@@johnk3606 as the rescue boat, would you have pulled the Freeman from it’s stern? I wondered if it was getting further raked over the rocks when being towed out. There seemed to be a helpful swell. It looks like there is a pole in the way to pull him from the stern.

The fire rescue outboards have very little torque pulling backwards. They should have spun the boat around and hooked up to the stern towing bar. It worked but they seemed to drag the boat along the jetty rocks instead of straight out into the channel.

9 rears in the coastguard auxiliary. Fire rescue had no fenders out when alongside that thing . Skiff hook to fend off not your hands and arms. Stearn tow would be better as u pointed out.

This all comes down to relying on computers to control ALL of your engines.
It seems POINTLESS to have redundant engines if they will all go down when a processor, wiring, or charging system is unhappy.

Looks like his autopilot was set for the end of the inlet (typical waypoint when coming in). Either forgot it was engaged, or it was disengaged but had a problem.

Steering issues or not...4 400hp engines can't stop it in time? Captain error...plus you can steer with the engines pointed straight with 2 let alone 4 outboards.

That hurts just watching it. How can four engines quit at once? When I replaced my engine, I had the choice of a 250 with manual controls or a 300 which required fly by wire. The 300 was way more expensive due to the fact that I would have to add the fly by wire, so I opted for the 250, and it has never failed me. I don’t trust the fly by wire systems.

@@willraefpv If your steering goes out you can still use differential steering to make the boat do exactly what you want it to. I hardly ever use my hydraulic steering. Everything is done with throttles and trannies.
@@DIYDaveT With quads you can only control the Left 2 and Right 2 combined. If you lose the left 2 motors, the right stick is only the right 2.

I have been a Salvage Master boat rescue owner and loved this one. The fire rescue was lucky as was the boat on the rocks not to have been hulled.

The fact that they jettisoned the tow rope after they were pulled off the rocks tells you all you need to know-PILOT ERROR and not a system malfunction.!

Probably not error from pilot, In the beginning of the video you can see people turn around and look at motors for no reason. Happened at the same time he should have been turning in but wasnt. I am sure he said something along the lines of, "oh fuck i cant steer"
you can see 2 engines steer left and 2 steer right though. Definitely looks like some systems failed...usually the engines steer in the same direction or else you wont turn...
Unexperienced boater just got a ton of experience.
1992 Boca Inlet we were on a 34' while on the fly bridge the steering had a linked chain going to the main steering down below steering the chain broke left the boat with no steering while returning back from the ocean with the waves at 5 to 6 foot that was a hella of a experience we had to steer with left and right engine and almost pitch pole and almost running into the south jetty.. I still don't know how we made it terrifying, although we also lived in Barnegat Light NJ and another bad ass inlet back in the 70's and 80's with shoaling, many problems there too ! we lived to tell about it !
As it headed toward the rocks, I yelled, “REEEEE-VVVVEERRRSSSEEEE!!!!!!” 😂

The reverse power of a prop is a fraction of the forward thrust. Nothing but cavitation! Rescue boat put itself in a lot of danger there.

@@Chris-fo8wp Wouldn't lots of thrust shoot water at the stranded boat possibly pushing it further up the rocks? Maybe they used reverse intentionally as to be gentle with the currents.

I think I would have dropped the throttles back on the port side and went to wide open on starboard to steer it with the engines. I used to dock my boat without ever touching the wheel. He definitely had the horsepower

Gremlins in the fuel & motor! I remember as a kid, everything was going great on the water. As soon as we got close to the Skyway Bridge, and pilings, the motor conked out! Glad we had paddles on board to keep us off the pilings. After several tense minutes, dad got the engine going again.
Steering issues for sure. Rescue boat could have approached it better but effective in the end.
Rescue boat should have towed the back of the boat away from the rocks first and the bow will automatically float. Bring the boat in deeper water away from the rocks and then a bow tow.

@@odeltarkhan3033 I thought same thing … once they had the stern clear, they could have dropped the motors down to assist under power.
There's been lots of accidents like this lately due to lack of experience. Lots of new boaters with a lot of money.
They lost the steering to the motors. I wouldn’t say it was a lack of experience. Things just happen.

@@jackpinkerton7803 Why do you say that? he isn't turning his wheel as far as I can tell and he doesn't turn around to look at his outboards until he hits hard reverse. He came in too hot and then got fixated on the thing he was trying to avoid. Pure inexperience.
