I grew up here. Been through the canal a hundred times. 1, slow down. 2, don't buy a bow rider. 3, don't overload your boat. 4, keep the weight in the rear. 5, keep in mind that a large percentage of boat owners have no freaking idea what they are doing!
I dont know how it is where this was filmed, but in Tennessee you can drink on a boat as long as you aren't the operator, and have your drivers license on hand.

@@skilldeadly8888 as a somehow experienced cat sailor i capsize not very often now. So why not leaving of the lifejacket? Very easy question and even easier answer. Cause everybody, regardless how exoerienced he is, could be caught offguard. Happened to me last month in a very wavy sea at 25kn of wind. I already was exhausted but still able to pull a rope. But after a capsize due to a too fast manouver and the first effortless attempt to get it back up i was totally weakened. Without a lifejacket i could have drowned easily. The only thing i was able to do was lying on my back. We were accompanied by a motor boat for security reasons, so it wasn't a big issue. But without a jacket he could have been there too late. Never go out into rough conditions or even into good ones that could change easily without proper equipment.
As I find myself endlessly clicking youtube recommendations to sooth my angst I find this gem. Watching these folks plow through the pleasant point canal with its turbulent waters and mercilessless waves, while wearing no safety gear and hurling insults at others. I understand just how it is that yesterday came to pass. God bless the fellow @2:05. At least he tried. Sometimes I feel like that guy, trying to bail a sinking boat with a drinking glass.
I highly highly doubt if you’re making a wake that it would make a bit of difference going through there. The waves are already bigger than any boats wake. I think the thinking behind the “no wake zone” is because it’s a fairly narrow canal with lots of back and forth traffic so they don’t want ppl blasting through there too close to other boats. Either way this Canal is a perfect example of why a lot of ppl should be required to take a boaters safety course upon purchase of a boat because there is just too many morons and ppl that lack common sense out there.
Personally, and as an owner of a bow rider, I think the problem here is not so much the boat but the distribution of weight within the boat and the failure of the ‘captain’ to recognise and react to the dangerous situation he was about to put his passengers in. Correct speed, trim and weight distribution would have seen the boat go through there without too much issue in my opinion.
@DeusVult1527 I agree that bow riders are not designed for those conditions. However, any competent skipper would have got that boat through there without sinking it and putting their passengers in danger, which was the comment I was making.

Those Sea Rays & Hurricane boats with the bow swooping down towards the waterline cracks me up. Even more dumb are the captains that can’t load a boat properly or trim the bow up with the outboard trailer/trim switch. This man has the answer!!! It's a two part solution to keep this from happening! Moving all the weight from the front to the back is just as important in almost each of these situations. I don't understand why these people are in the front to begin with? That's the worst place to sit when there's even a moderate chop. My dad was a captain and was always reminding us to stay in the back of the boat when underway. Even when it's calm, you can hit a wake and send everyone flying. Next to the No Wake sign, there should be a Sit In The Back sign. 😄
I LOVE the 1st boat, when they know they are in trouble the guy runs to the back to have the woman dump out the beer and then someone is using a little cup to bail the boat :)
@trvman1 They definitely had no clue and just panicked. That is the fault of the "Captain" of the vessel. He should have moved the people to the back to prevent more water from coming over the front. If the deck had scuppers, the deck could have drained out. The first thing I always install on my boats is scuppers. If you take water over the bow, you throttle up, and the water runs right out. I had a little 17' skiff that got filled to the gunnels when a larger boat swamped us. All I did was give it full throttle, and in less than a minute, it was empty.

The great thing about the canal back in the day was that those who shouldn't be in there stayed out because of its reputation. It has gotten worse but its not the canal, its traffic from all these new credit card captains half of which manage to find that sweet spot where they make the biggest wake possible and the rest do 2 knots SOG with the tide in a 23 foot outboard that can just barely keep control and bitch when they're looking up at the anchor of a 35 Henriques thats doing 8 knots at idle...
I loved how with each successive dip of the bow, the boat kept taking on more water, yet the idiot weekend captain thought "I'll just keep going on the same disastrous course and just "power through it!""
There were several times during that event where even a reasonably competent person at the helm could have saved it. The people at the front (and probably everyone else aboard as well) thought everything was just fine even when it was obvious that they were done. He could have trimmed up, had everyone get to the back of the boat, and got on the power a bit and changed to a 45 degree angle in order to get to the calm water ahead and let the pumps do their job. Of course, he did none of those things and just decided to keep on keepin’ on!! Haha!!

Is Captain error avoidable? In a word, YES! Kids in the bow in rough waters. Going out in a bow rider in rough water. Stuffing the bow about 10 times taking on a huge amounts of water during each stuffing. Boat not trimmed correctly. Fenders hanging off the side of the boat (rookie behavior) And the best part, they didn’t even look for life vests until the boat was sinking. These are your kids you’re putting in danger. Boating is a blast and really fun until somebody gets hurt, drowns or dies. Safety is everything so you can go out and have fun and not have to worry. At least one kid was wearing a life vest. PS when your boat is listing to port, get all passengers on the starboard side. Pontoon boats are not made for sea conditions. Only placid water.
Bow riders shorter than 20ft would eat up those swells with the bow up. Only boat that doesn’t belong there are the pond toons. Everyone is trimmed down in they’re center consoles and I’d cruise right on past in my 17’8” sea swirl bow rider with the bow up. Only commented because my bow rider has ran 12 miles out in the keys in 7-8 swells and it also runs 14 inches of water no jackplate just trimmed. Bow riders are the best bang for your buck guaranteed. At least used ones.
I get your point, but the speed of other boats is what the causes the most problems here. We’ve been out there when the water is glass and one douche bag speeding thru can ruin ur day real fast. I get what ur saying tho, he handled that like a clown.
As a lake boat owner for 18 years. (18.5 foot fish and ski) these are not the conditions to take some of these boats out. We’ve been on Lake Michigan with similar conditions and immediately turned around and took the boat out. Also not a single one of those boats is actually traveling at No wake speed. They need to ticket most of them.
Lake Michigan is no joke, i have been in 10 to12 foot waves that where steeper than salt water. If you go somewhere where the authorities are required to regulate peoples behavior, expect the worst much like that big city on lake Michigan.

@@Gyuresssz Because NL is situated on the northsea, with the entire western and northern border. We are the delta of 3 major European rivers (Rhine, Meuse and Schelde) Half of NL is below sealevel. We created much of it by taking it from the sea. Weve been seafearing for 1000s of years. Tiny as we are, we ruled the worlds seas for a century. Everyone is a sailor here, as we are all raised with water and all are married to the sea. Every native can swim and passed 1 or more exams to prove it. For going out in motorized boats like these, or even sailing boats, you need to study the rules and pass the exam for that. For westerschelde, where i live, you need 2 even, bc its a busy shipping lane with the worlds biggest ships coming through. Passing that exam is needed for every river, sea arm and sea. Only on small inlands waters (not rivers) you are allowed to boat without a license and engine hp's are very limited for those. (usually 5hp or smth) and then there still are speed restrictions. Every dutch boy spends numerous hours and days on the beach. Thats the thing your parents buy you; a bucket and a shovel. And then you can go study the water, as it takes down your sandcastles when the tide comes in. And you learn on a small scale how water behaves. Thats what we do and what we are. And those rules and so are in place bc of many deaths on the water or by the water. And even with those rules, people still die. But not as much as it used to be. What you see in this video (and more like it) would NEVER be allowed in NL. There is NO way. If anyone would try, they would probably jail them. And for good reason, bc what these idiots are doing is asking for casualties. Those bow rider and other constructs have no place even near a sea. And then they are on there with children and babies even, without life jackets. No wonder there is continuous guard by water police, bc without the number of casualties would be staggering. A kid or even adult can easily be swept from the boat on those bow riders. Then with some whirling there, possibly undercurrent, you can fish up a dead body somewhere around there, bc you are not going to be able to save them.

Many years ago (over 50), I had made one trip in the Point Pleasant canal. I had, at the time, a nice restored Century Palomino cruiser. A good wooden boat. With an old but dependable 50 hp V4 Evenrude. A few times, during that passage, I found myself standing still, bow in the air, behind much larger boats, setting up standing wake waves. Earlier that day, I had been out in the ocean, and found it an easier cruise not too far off the shore line. That, was my first and last passage in the Point Pleasant canal. I went back to Lake Hopatcong.
Our family boat, 28' Bertram, used to get tossed around in the Barnegat Inlet in the 80s/90s, well before the dredging was done. My dad always used to tell us to get down from the top, sit aft-- regardless of how calm the inlet appeared to be at first.

I've lived on a sizeable lake my entire life and have been around, and have owned, boats as well, and what I see is: Nearly all these boats are going way too fast for the swells. All these swamping issues are totally avoidable. Even in a bow rider, if you idle along the "submarining" effect will diminish greatly, and noting the water conditions, there shouldn't be anyone riding in the bow. Nearly everyone does not have a life preserver on, most importantly, the kids. Then you have the probability of alcohol and what not thrown into the mix. There's more, but it's just my observations. I'm not an expert and I've broken some of these rules myself over the years. Being on the water anywhere is fun, but a huge responsibility as it can be very unforgiving.
Beautifully put David!!! I was worried sick watching the mom holding baby.....lastly, cannot believe the lack of life preservers like you noted as well!!!
I'm a marine technician and surveyor It's has always amazed me how little knowledge of stability, timing and basic knowledge boaters have. Here in BC Canada you only need an online license to operate fairly large and powerful boats, it's crazy really.
I’m a longtime BC mariner and I recently went out on a rental boat from Granville Island with some friends who don’t boat. Long story short they we’re having a great time driving a boat for the first time and I was enjoying the sun. all of a sudden my buddy stuffed it good on a standing wave out by the iron workers bridge. I jumped on the helm immediately and recovered it luckily I can only imagine what would’ve happened if I had decided to stay home that day
USA is NOT about common sense and being responsable. It's all about sales and money so if the rules are kept VERY low, then more and more ijuts can buy boats. It's really as simple as that. In other parts of the world, you need experience to pilot a boat.
I love how every time they submarine the boats, the bow riders freak out but stay seated in the bow. Could you imagine how many boats would be off the water if only qualified captains were allowed to operate a boat.
I believe information is key in any situation and denial of rules makes you a target by choice for unfortunate tragedy. Btw, everyone appears to be professional swimmers due to the absence of life jacket and guessing the baby knows how to swim. Thanks for sharing.

I grew up traversing that canal. Back before they replaced the 88 bridge it was far worse. On a good day there was rapids after the bridge due to a steep dropoff on the ocean side of the bridge caused by a spill of concrete. You never heard ppl screaming at each other. Everyone went slow and respected others. How things have changed.
The bridge may have been replaced but that ledge and deep hole are still there. That boat didn't leave a standing wave, the current dropping off that shelf then coming back up makes it. @@stevenkimber4735 I think in this case you wouldn't want to go too far up, otherwise when you crest a wave the prop might come out of the water. Going up the canal in a pontoon with your entire family sitting in the front deck is obviously the best way to end up with a drowning call to emergency services
My Uncle lived at the edge of this Canal, just across from the State Police Marina. Watching the Boats struggle as they came and went was entertaining, but many were obviously in danger. Although this is a long way from Atlantic Ocean Access, it is narrow and subject to Wakes and Tides which is often too much for the Smaller Boats that are designed for Bays.
@@JaRule6 It is the only reasonably close outlet to the Ocean in that area. Many Boaters have limited skills and should not attempt this Channel. Another Dock might be a better option, but the Ocean is probably not for those who can't safely navigate the Channel.
The state police's local headquarters are located directly off of the canal a few hundred yards from the south end of the canal, so it's not unusual to find a patrol boat nearby, especially on a busy summer day. This HQ and it's marina can be seen clearly from 3:05 to 3:20 and the watch tower is often monitored by staff who will get on a loudspeaker to scold passing boats that do not adhere to the no-wake requirement. Despite this, navigating this stretch can be harrowing on the best of days, evened for seasoned locals. Tidal conditions often cause the current in the canal to make it difficult to achieve forward progress while still obeying the no-wake restriction. This fact alone can cause standing waves to form behind vessels that continue onward. Couple that with high boat traffic, large yachts, a bridge with two supports located within the channel itself that significantly speed up water flow locally and reduce clearance, and wave reflection from the bulkheads and you've got a potential for disaster for the uninitiated. It is imperative to trim your boat accordingly to achieve a high bow stance and to keep passengers as far back as possible. Regardless of no-wake rules, it is still necessary to actively work the throttle to avoid pitching into the wake.
The only one who tried, and actively worked the throttle, was the pontoon boat. Should have moved everybody to the back and made sure EVERYONE had life jackets on before entering that battlefield, and he didn't react quickly enough, but he at least had a decent grasp of what to do once it hit the fan.
@@notexpatjoeif you want to be that pedantic, the *actual* correct solution is to balance your boat however it needs to be balanced. With a decent bow that might be midship, but for others including pontoons, depending on load out, you may well want to put people as far rear as possible. The only definitively bad idea is putting people, or maybe children on the bow.
At risk of being pedantic, I'm not so sure outboard trim is always good for raising the bow. At slow speeds the prop is pumping water out from under the back of the boat and trimming out will add more weight by pushing the water higher. Then the cantilevered portion in the front of the boat (if any) has to be supported by the center going deeper. A big factor seems to be the short waves when the shape between peaks happens to match the curve of the boat. Shallow water compared to wave height causes that, I think, no matter what causes the wave's height.

This video should be mandatory viewing for all coast guard boat navigation classes. The current is wicked strong that by itself screams NO BOW RIDING.
These people that can't figure out riding in the bow in those conditions should not have a boat
It has to do with weight as well for bow riders
@DeusVult1527 I agree that bow riders are not designed for those conditions. However, any competent skipper would have got that boat through there without sinking it and putting their passengers in danger, which was the comment I was making.
I have been a boat owner for nearly 40 years and you know, having your life jacket on before the boat is sinking is a pretty good idea.

Most of these could have been avoided by the captain slowing down and moving the weight to the back of the boat.
@@Jonathan.D exactly 😮

Only placid water.
and, one time of making your passengers that scared, they will not want to go out again

Why being from the Netherlands is relevant?
lol@@Gyuresssz
@@Gyuresssz Because NL is situated on the northsea, with the entire western and northern border. We are the delta of 3 major European rivers (Rhine, Meuse and Schelde)
Half of NL is below sealevel.
Then with some whirling there, possibly undercurrent, you can fish up a dead body somewhere around there, bc you are not going to be able to save them.

no the dad is an tard for going head on with the waves after they started coming over , all ive ever had is tiny boats and even i know to slow down and hit them at a different angle when they are coming over. being in the bow doesnt make much difference
AND have their children put up for adoption.
Why? Natural selection. Dumb parents rear dumb children.
@@jackx4311 AND it was the kids asking to be transferred to better parents
the kid trying to bail the water out with a cup was funny!
Immigrant types
Should of trimmed to help lift the bow
But then if they go slow the turbulence will throw them around
Why are the waves so big it don't look very windy
Beautifully put David!!! I was worried sick watching the mom holding baby.....lastly, cannot believe the lack of life preservers like you noted as well!!!
Mom dumping her beer was classic
Getting rid of evidence in front of police is always a good move.
Your allowed do drink on a boat captain is a dumbass either way
I agree, we need to defund the police remember?
Great idea , let’s overload a little 18 foot boat and go out into rough seas with little kids on the boat . Brilliant !
All the boat captains know that the area is always rough, YET they have people in the bow, and without vests. HUGE problems, especially for kids.
Excellent videos ! ⛵
Just blows my mind every time i see kids without life jackets on going through rough water like that
I'm a marine technician and surveyor
It's has always amazed me how little knowledge of stability, timing and basic knowledge boaters have.
I jumped on the helm immediately and recovered it luckily I can only imagine what would’ve happened if I had decided to stay home that day
Live in bc, and if by crazy you mean awesome I agree completely
In Michigan you take a class in 6th grade and your boaters license is good for life. I never understood how this made sense.
USA is NOT about common sense and being responsable. It's all about sales and money so if the rules are kept VERY low, then more and more ijuts can buy boats.
It's really as simple as that.
In other parts of the world, you need experience to pilot a boat.
@@Team33Team33we prefer freedom in the states.
I love how every time they submarine the boats, the bow riders freak out but stay seated in the bow. Could you imagine how many boats would be off the water if only qualified captains were allowed to operate a boat.
They need to have “Pilots” at both ends of the canal to help these “Captains” through the canal!
Florida and NJ people are just built different
I believe information is key in any situation and denial of rules makes you a target by choice for unfortunate tragedy. Btw, everyone appears to be professional swimmers due to the absence of life jacket and guessing the baby knows how to swim. Thanks for sharing.
Screaming "slow the f* down" whithout trimming whilst the boat ahead is trimmed is pure genius....
As a non boater, can you explain what trimming of the engine does to the waves?
@@j88-e7qtrimming an outboard or inboard engine moves the engine up or down, so having the engine at a slow speed with the engine all the way down creates a smaller wave vs the engine trimmed up creates a bigger wave. Also the bigger the boat the bigger the wave.
@@brade7322So you're saying trimmed boats make bigger waves? The first comment seems to think otherwise
@@qc6265 yes depending on how much the motor is trimmed and how fast you are going.
Trimming raises or lowers the bow 😊
bad decisions, bathtub boats, no lifejackets, anger and yelling .. ah such a peaceful and wonderful day on the water /smh
Even lake craft. I work summers at lakes in Virginia; drunk, speeding, pwcs racing through the swimming areas, boats anchoring in swimming areas, boat rage. Just - knuckle-headedry and hockey puckery.
Well at least it drowns out the shitty music that these boaters usually insist everyone else needs to listen to.
People love sitting in the bow. Front row tickets to the sinking.
Get in touch with me in respect of the above number for a reward conversation ok
Ehh, my grandpa remembers that canal being a shitshow back in the 60's. It's never been tame.
...move bitch, get out tha way bitch, get out tha way...
The bridge may have been replaced but that ledge and deep hole are still there. That boat didn't leave a standing wave, the current dropping off that shelf then coming back up makes it. And they need to just ban pontoon boats in there, they cannot handle a 1 foot chop on the bay... And I feel bad for the tug style boat but the moment Karen-shouldntwearabikini started bitching I enjoyed it. The wife of some credit card captain is gonna tell me how to run the canal GFY lady. I've got 6 knots of current and a boat with an ass bigger than hers, tooty the tug and Mrs CCCaptain may be able to maintain steerage but the sport boat is gonna see his stern pass him on 2 whistles if he tries to hold up behind them. People need to learn that the canal is like the parkway, you have to go or gtfo of the way...
Unfortunately we’ve circumvented natural selection. People like this now roam amongst us!
The amount of people who don't understand weight distribution is staggering
Maybe trim the outboard up? Plus what you said
@@stevenkimber4735 I think in this case you wouldn't want to go too far up, otherwise when you crest a wave the prop might come out of the water. But 6 people riding in the front of a bow rider is effectively adding about 1000lbs to the front half of the boat, if that 1000lbs were closer to the rear of the boat it wouldn't plow waves nearly as bad, if not at all
@@edwardranno7119 a pontoon boat wouldn't make it through this, they're not designed for rough chop it would nose dive the second wake
@@notexpatjoe I only said closer to the stern I didn't say have everyone sit on the stern
I can't believe my eyes watching this... my dad and I fished the middle Atlantic Seaboard for years - all the major bays, inlets, and ocean approaches - never once shipped water over the bow. Had a couple of followers come over the transom - but very rare. Always had a boat with high freeboard and prow. I see these designs with tumblehome bows, and shake my head - who would buy such craft for the ocean? And pontoons?? LOL! You gotta be kidding.... I call it "How to drown your kids...".
Have you ran the canal it isn't like anything you seen if you haven't believe me
@@bdanielcal4608 I have not, but I do believe you. I watch a lot of these vids from Haulover, Pt. Pleasant, etc. They're all washing machines, and the difficulties become problems when the equipment and pilot's skills aren't up to the job.
The pontoons are crazy there!
@@buickinvicta288 Pontoons are no fun in waves like that, but at the same time, a pontoon is a plywood platform sitting on top of two sealed buoyancy chambers. Doesn't really matter how much water they take on, it's all going to run off again because there's no where for it to pool up and unless you puncture the pontoons, it's not going to sink. So they aren't in any more danger of sinking than any other boat along there.
0:20 - Dive Dive Dive! 100% captain's fault. The number of people getting extremely lucky, and not realizing it, is mind boggling. They have no clue how close they came to death and disaster, and they just continue doing what they do. We've stopped getting on the crowded waterways and lakes. Too many inexperienced boaters with more dollars than sense and too many close calls. Be safe out there.
Thanks for the clips.
It’s 5 feet deep
@@kdesjarlais8200 if one of those kids got bumped off striking his head on the t-top, or the toerail, you'd be hard pressed to find him, especially with that current. how deep it is does not justify taking these risks. that little bowrider was overpopulated for the specific type or passage they were doing, and the captain should have known that
@@kdesjarlais8200 …..and windy and rough and always a bunch of boats close to each other. PUT A LIFE JACKET ON THE KIDS! Oh wait a minute, I’m too cool to do that. Gotta look cool 😎
Used to boat on inland Texas lakes. When the wind and waves came up we always put on PFD's and minimized weight in the bow. We also used the outdrive trim to force the bow a little higher. I don't think I have seen trim used in the canal videos.
Yeah... All of these "captains" in this video be like: "What's a trim?"
I know, right? Is it because they only boat a few months of the year? All the nautical knowledge gets frozen and shattered during the winter months?
That’s because they never learned even the basics of handling a boat and really shouldn’t be allowed the responsibility of being a Captain. I’m sure they have no idea that, as Captain, they are personally responsible for the safety of every soul onboard their boat.

They all thought it was funny till it wasn't!!
Going up the canal in a pontoon with your entire family sitting in the front deck is obviously the best way to end up with a drowning call to emergency services
You know what a wake is?
It's what your friends attend when you've been careless with your boat.
Embarrassing.
I’m surprised the sharks don’t hang out here. Lots of bait it seems.
Do folks traverse that channel by choice or for entertainment value? Do they have to go up that channel to get to the ocean and back again?
@@JaRule6 It is the only reasonably close outlet to the Ocean in that area. Many Boaters have limited skills and should not attempt this Channel. Another Dock might be a better option, but the Ocean is probably not for those who can't safely navigate the Channel.
@@williampagdon4822 Thanks for letting me know. I agree with you completely.
Good info, thank you.
@@drbigmdftnuwould have made the passage easier..however you can't actually swamp a pontoon boat..hard to fill a flat deck and fence panels with water
