Best thing is to get a pair of Retevis RT-10 handheld radios, they are 900mhz, support DMR and have detachable antennas. Hardly anyone has 900mhz radios especially DMR ones. The best part is that 900mhz is also a part 15 ISM band so no license is required if you run digital (analog requires a ham license). Motorola also makes 900mhz digital radios called the DTR and it requires no license.
So, I have my HAM and GMRS licenses. I am also in Law Enforcment. I have all of the above-mentioned frequencies programmed in my FT5D, UV5R and TID3 radios. No one knows what radio I am using..... :)
Your department must still use analog frequencies then. Most departments have gone encrypted in frequency ranges outside of a majority of commercially available radios.
@@nimblehealer199 I have a question about this. If a police department moves from analog to a digital encrypted frequency, I am assuming this means that you can't buy a scanner and tune into those frequencies? So that would mean gone are the days of listening in with a scanner once they all switch over? Or do they make newer scanners that can received these too?
MURS is decent for outdoor activities that need a bit more range than FRS or GMRS as the lower frequency can travel through more obstacles. Contrary to popular belief, however, CB is not dead and might just be your best bet if you want to play around with out-of-band middle-fingering of rules. If you have an actual interest in radio as a hobby, CB is also a good place to start for that as you have plenty of options to play with to prepare you for licensed radio stuff. The CB channels are now opened up to FM use, so you can play around with FM or AM or upper/lower sideband, and you might even be able to mod your radio for out-of-band frequencies. AM or sideband use on a CB is about as close as you can get to HAM legally without a license and it's especially fun at times of high solar activity like we are currently in as at certain times you can hear or chat with people well over the horizon. TL;dr is that if you just want to chat with a local friend, go for MURS or CB but if you have a serious interest in radio as a hobby, start with CB or GMRS and learn all you can. If you ever get a license for HAM or GMRS, make sure to use a PO Box that has a street address instead of your home address, in another town over if possible.

In defense of that agency that assigns frequencies and tries to keep the air waves spurious free. Can you imagine over hearing this (cause we did); "United Flight 1260, SOCAL, (the en-route air traffic control center on 136.25 mHz) ..."Traffic, your altitude, six miles-a 737 - for traffic avoidance turn now to heading.....(Interruption)....'Hello Frank.. Paul here, what are you and Mary doing tonight ?.....(Someone not caring about their frequency useage) There is a good reason why we must not have a casual approach to just using any frequency we so choose. Many handhelds will receive the air band and are modified for other reasons even though the modulation techniques are different (AM vs. FM) Ya gotta be careful and cautious out there. Enjoy your radios.
Unfortunately, your message will be lost on the vast majority of his viewers, because they tend to be a selfish lot and unable to think beyond their own personal space bubble. They have no concept of the need to regulate the airwaves to maintain a level of order to allow useful communication, but then get annoyed when someone tramples their broadcasts the way they trample “some people’s” broadcasts.
We hand an old timer with a W#xxx 1x3 call go without renewing his license. Well, two years passed, and a local recently licensed Tech saw a 1x3 call come available, and grabbed it as a vanity call. (All 1x3 calls had been issued.) Oh, the fireworks on the local repeater were epic...

Where I live next to the Texas coast near Corpus Christi, we used to have three FCC listening station in this area. Due to government cuts we have none now, I would say you shouldn’t have a problem with point-to-point VHFUHF. HS frequencies might be a different deal
I want to know and having a hard time finding. Can I use a ham radio for emergencies? I’m about to go through hurricane Milton this week and 2 years ago all cellphone services were down and I had no other way to get ahold of anyone but my neighbor gave me a handheld baofeng uv 5rtp walkie talkie. I don’t have a license yet took the test 2 times and failed it as it was alot harder than I thought. But my main question is can I use it during natural disasters like hurricanes that take out regular communications like cell phone towers and landlines…
Took the han radio test years ago but I can’t remember everything I read I the textbook and I don’t have the book anymore since I was flooded out by hurricane ian.
Seems the US is quite restricted compared to Australia. Here we have the UHF CBRS Band on 476-477Mhz which was created in Melbourne in 1977. We are allowed to use many Commercial grade transceivers such as Motorola, Simoco, Tait, Icom, Kenwood, Vertex, Philips, etc as long as you are transmitting a maximum of 5 watts, which of course most of us do not. However, much like the FCC, the ACMA in Australia treats CB operators like children.
From the FCC website: The FRS is authorized 22 channels in the 462 MHz and 467 MHz range, all of which are shared with General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) which requires an individual license for use.
My recommendation would be to use the spectrum of the ham band for experimental and digital stations. Full of gargabe automated stations that very rarely broadcasts their own callsigns and very very few hams that actively monitor these frequencies. Encrypted DMR would not attract any attention if you dont use it for hour long transmission.
MURS are good for kids to use to play and during hunting season the channels do get busy, seems many hunters are cheap. CB is still busy on the weekend especially in the midwest, people get bored driving and want to talk to strange men they do not know.
And, despite the complex confuculation of frequency assignments by the eff-ceez -seize, I am comforted in hearing that table 7 is ready while listening on my company assigned commercial radio.

The best part is that 900mhz is also a part 15 ISM band so no license is required if you run digital (analog requires a ham license). Motorola also makes 900mhz digital radios called the DTR and it requires no license.
Yup, that's a brain tickler. Good stuff! Thanks.
Me too. Except the law enforcement part. 😄
@@nimblehealer199 In Allegheny county PA (Pittsburgh and her suburbs) are STILL 99% unscrambled Analog UHF-FM! A UV-5R would cover it!
So….do you just arrest yourself then? 🤣🤣🤣
You can also use SSB, AM or heck any digital modes
2nd video I've watched of yours, i love you lol. Will be watching way more vids
Good video as always @NotaRubicon Productions
Rock solid and informative video. A best seller!
I hate to be realistic here, but this was a very informative video.
I love this guy.
" Overlords of the FCC's" 🤣🤣🤣 That made my day.
Your comtent has been informative and entertaining. On another note, has anyone noticed that Randy never blinks
I'm hoping to get someone in DC that will get rid of every 3 letter agency in America...and soon
Help is not coming.
Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability.
love all the radios in the background
i have baofeng uv-82 what is the big silver looking screw on the side by the mic/speaker input for?
I dunno?! What does the user manual have to say about it?
@@TheNotaRubicon i'm sorry i answer my question after i post it, but it hold the rubber piece on the mic/speaker cover. i'm going to try as a ground ant. thanks for the reply
tl;dr: All of them. Frequencies cannot hurt you. Love your channel!
Paul here, what are you and Mary doing tonight ?.....(Someone not caring about their frequency useage)
There is a good reason why we must not have a casual approach to just using any frequency we so choose. Many handhelds will receive the air band and are modified for other reasons even though the modulation techniques are different (AM vs. FM)
Ya gotta be careful and cautious out there.
Bootlicking rat
I love your robotic voice in this video. It is so funny! 😂🤖
I'm hearing people on the ham bands using expired call signs. Some of them are probably old timers who forgot to renew after 10 years.
Same ones that voted democrat after they died...
Isn't MURS what those wise guys gave jesus for his birthday
Yes. Gold, FCC & MURS
Oh...that's how it's spelled. I kinda thought it was frequencies for discussing camel flu.
Edit: MERS

I was able to obtain a FCC certified UV-5R radio, it works well!!
All my Baofengs are FCC certified.

I love the antenna twirling. I have a GMRS and ham general license. I’ll play by gmrs rules but I’ll never own a gmrs radio.
You have the best printed tee-shirts!!! And after almost 2 years, I just noticed your link to buy them. Yup, I'm a little slow when it comes to S**t like that..
I have a lot of fun talking to people with my ham radio to people with 2 pac radios or gmrs radios or to the warehouse worker in town using what i can only imagine is a lmr radio. I dont see what the issue is. The radio works fine. Cant wait to get my antenna up.
Where I live next to the Texas coast near Corpus Christi, we used to have three FCC listening station in this area. Due to government cuts we have none now, I would say you shouldn’t have a problem with point-to-point VHFUHF. HS frequencies might be a different deal
Wow from 3 to none . No money because we gave it to Urkraine
The empire is collapsing
CB radio is far from dead. Talk on mine everyday all across the world when skip is rolling
That will die out soon. No more skip for years.
Thank you kind sir!
That background needs to be a T-shirt
Seems the US is quite restricted compared to Australia.
Here we have the UHF CBRS Band on 476-477Mhz which was created in Melbourne in 1977.
We are allowed to use many Commercial grade transceivers such as Motorola, Simoco, Tait, Icom, Kenwood, Vertex, Philips, etc as long as you are transmitting a maximum of 5 watts, which of course most of us do not.
However, much like the FCC, the ACMA in Australia treats CB operators like children.
Also 900mhz is available, limited use due to few radio options (LMR & Retivis mostly)
From the FCC website: The FRS is authorized 22 channels in the 462 MHz and 467 MHz range, all of which are shared with General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) which requires an individual license for use.
Ok.. Thanks for answering the question that nobody asked?
My recommendation would be to use the spectrum of the ham band for experimental and digital stations. Full of gargabe automated stations that very rarely broadcasts their own callsigns and very very few hams that actively monitor these frequencies. Encrypted DMR would not attract any attention if you dont use it for hour long transmission.
MURS are good for kids to use to play and during hunting season the channels do get busy, seems many hunters are cheap. CB is still busy on the weekend especially in the midwest, people get bored driving and want to talk to strange men they do not know.
And, despite the complex confuculation of frequency assignments by the eff-ceez
-seize, I am comforted in hearing that table 7 is ready while listening on my company assigned commercial radio.
