Heck yeah... that UV5r is easy to throw in a bag with an extra battery and a snubby ABREE or Diamond antenna..... and a Nagoya for the big distances.... and still spend less than $50... They are handy little radios. Plus you can listen to music on the FM radio and it will interrupt if the channel you're monitoring becomes active.
@@MrTux62 the other thing that's super helpful is they're capable of picking up the National Weather service automated stations anywhere in the US. You're welcome to GTS it if you doubt what I am saying. With all of the digital communications (online and off) today, HAM is mostly dying. ALL you need to do is to tune into the web streams of countless HAM repeaters / ham clubs to realize this. Sometimes, there isn't even a reply to the callouts. I reached out to the company and they said, “This is not a model we sell or support.” Juusssst Lovely.
@@TheNotaRubicon exactly, I think for less than $30 I would just order a second radio. Probably cheaper than sending it back for repairs and likely cheaper than buying just the charger.

I bought 2 Baofeng GT-5R radios, long story, I'm now studying for my ham license :-) I stumbled across you channel. Not only are you very informative you are also very funny! Keep up the great work. Thank you for your time and effort 👍
As a newbie, I’m curious….with all the discussion that there’s no enforcement of all these rules regarding licenses, why do you feel you need one? Not trying to challenge you, just honestly interested in why some get a license and others don’t. Thnx.
I just bought the Midland MXT275 and just realized it only has channels. What a great relief to see you took the time to do a video explaining how to use both radios together. Baofeng UV-5R & Midland MXT275. Thanks a bunch and keep up the good work
I like your videos. You do the most at explaining and letting us know what is available in the GMRS and what to avoid. I have several GMRS radios now. Several of them I would have not known about if it wasn’t for you. I’m going to start buying the things that I need to set up a GMRS base station. I would like to see you do a video on setting up a base station. I’m planning on using the Midland MXT115 or the Midland MXT400 . I have my power source converter and back up power supply. The problem is the type of base antenna and what to use .
I’m new to the radio thing… the last time I used one in the field was decades ago… now with the recent outages I’ve remembered just how important it is to have good comms. 🤙🏾
You Sir are my Spirit Animal! LOL! This was a great and very instructional video, and PLEASE make a "Sad Ham" patch so we can buy them and set them free on the world! Keep up the awesome man.

I really want to troll the comments and get moved to the top but I appreciate the content Mr. NotaRubicon makes so much that I cant bring myself to do it
I think there's enough sad hams out there waiting for the despised UV-5R video to come out just so they can disparage it and the users of them. And I am a licensed ham but dang, these radios sure have there place. I have cheap $26 dollars Baofeng radios and $180 hand held and let me tell you, there is a huge difference in quality but the cheaper radios still work quite well. Also I throw the UV-5Rs in glove boxes, backpacks and trunks of car and would hardly batt an eye if they were stolen.

Me too. If you have two of these radios, can you link them up and talk normally as you would on a regular walkie-talkie without dealing with the sad hams?
I've been trying to think of who you reminded me of. Finally remembered it was a younger Bill Murray when you got to he dogs and cats sleeping together line. Im lazy. No way I'm programming a baofeng by hand unless it's life or death.
2nd day into adult radio 4 qty, 5R-8W's that couldn't communicate with each other,,, now they all have 6 channels and 1, 5w (frs/gmrs) programmed in. Still got lots to learn. Thanks
I love your videos. Thank you for taking your time to keep us informed and entertained. I commented this on your last video but It had been up for a bit. I think your fans would also like to see the UV-5R be a star. Totally off topic, but I just watched "Fate of the Furious" for the 1st time since getting into ham....I mean GMRS radios. I know your passion for the UV-5R. That's what the team uses. There is a whole rack of them at 1:09:12....and they all have the flashlight on! But nobody ever licks one, which would be great. Keep up the great videos! Has anyone else noticed this in the movie?
Works just like you said!!! Thanks a lot for this information. I have been trying to figure this out for over a year now! Love the comedy by the way. I used to do stand up back in the 80's in Los Angeles so if I say you have some funny material, you can believe it's good stuff.
MUCH appreciated. I've been trying to sort some things out and you seem to be very straight forward and lay things out in a concise manner. Again, much appreciated.
You make these fraught times fun! Whether I’m smart enough parse my beautiful new Baofeng remains to be seen but I’m Grateful for the collective efforts that have made my joyous befuddlement possible! Via con dios!
PS I also plan on setting up some portable simplex repeaters. I’m setting up those to be very portable . I’m not using a 12volt battery to power them just using the AA or AAA batteries that the simplex repeater is set up for. That way all I have to do is deploy the repeater in areas that we are and need them.

I reached out to the company and they said, “This is not a model we sell or support.” Juusssst Lovely.
yah, well for $30 you get what you get, but all of mine (i have like 8) except for 1, do that red/green flashing thing.. they still charge just fine.
@@TheNotaRubicon Great! I will keep on with it. Thanks for the videos... They’re great. Funny and very informative.
@@TheNotaRubicon exactly, I think for less than $30 I would just order a second radio. Probably cheaper than sending it back for repairs and likely cheaper than buying just the charger.
I just ordered a Baofeng UV-5R. One of your videos came up in my UA-cam feed and I told myself I had to get one of those radios. Your videos are very informative. Thank you for posting them.
Just submitted for my GMRS license! Thanks to the walkthrough on your site it made it much easier. YOU ROCK
You really got your gmrs license
how long once you gave them the money did it take to get your license
S2 Underground is starting a war with hams. I love it.
Got my first UV-5R in the mail last night, I like your videos over all others, very useful, easy to listen to, and you are comical which makes the watching experience even better. Take my subscription.
The level of truth / comedy in your videos is hilarious. Keep up the great work!
I watch this guy for sarcasm lessons. And I thought I had a black belt in sarcasm.
Finally got my GMRS license. Thanks for all your help and encouragement NotaRubicon!
I love your non-sugar-coated, bullshit-free explanations. I have learned quite a bit watching you. Of course, you can get lots of answers just by using your "Google Machine" lol, but sometimes you bring up questions I never thought of asking. So.....mind blown! Love your channel and so do a few friends I introduced to your channel. Thank you, Sir!
Yeah, I spit out my coffee when he had a pic of that tranny Navy admiral up on the TV screen behind him. Freakin hilarious.
I love your comments . Because we all know ham radio for a lot of these nerds is their show business. The first time I used a repeater in Houston and did the echolink the Wrong way, you would have thought I set his house on fire. He later apologized.
Your attitude and wealth of knowledge is greatly appreciated I've learned so much from this channel cheers!
I think the seniors at my club would scoff if they heard I’ve ever watched a single video of yours but I love this channel and I find it hilarious
I have to say, I was cracking up 75% of the time while watching this video. It was informative and funny. Thank you!
You are AWESOME. Iam not a comment lever but I have to leave you some, you are GREAT help to me as I know nothing but truly iam learning from you THANK YOU
Done and got it work with a Baofeng BF-F8HP and Motorola T270.
Awesome video and thank you 😊
Had to turn off both the tx tones and sub channels on the T270 to get the Baofeng to hear the T270 transmissions.
Just tried on my Bf-F8HP. Worked great. I was actually really concerned that it might not be an option in an emergency situation.
This great... clear accurate information with humor. Glad I found you. After watching this I know not to eat or drink during your videos. My monitor is now coated in coffee.
Your videos are strangely addicting and has been causing me to be more interested in radio in general, keep up what you are doing.
Thanks a bunch and keep up the good work
Great, that explains it. I transmitted on a GMRS frequency from my UV-5R and that's why all the kittens our cat had bark.
Love your sense of humor.
Thanx for the videos!! Appreciate them.
I LOVE YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR! I came to learn a little about HAM radios and I stayed because of your humor! I'm watching all your videos. :-)
You Sir are my Spirit Animal! LOL! This was a great and very instructional video, and PLEASE make a "Sad Ham" patch so we can buy them and set them free on the world! Keep up the awesome man.
I bought the uv5r and thought that I bought something that I couldn't use since it was locked now I'm able to pick up gmrs frequencies thank you for the instructions on how to jailbreak the UV5R
LEGEND, You have made learning how to use my first radio SOOOO easy!
I really want to troll the comments and get moved to the top but I appreciate the content Mr. NotaRubicon makes so much that I cant bring myself to do it
but after posting this comment i think he would appreciate the entertainment value of a troll comment :-p
Awesome videos I'm a former army radio operator maintainer and you have made using this radio super simple and super easy to follow. Thank you!!!!!
Just bought a pair with the long antenna and ear piece , cant wait to start using it. Watching all your videos to learn as much as i can.
I transmit all the time on my uv5 to talk to my offroad friends while we are wheeling. It works great to talk to frsand Gmc’s radios on the trails.
I just bought them for that reason. Do you need any licensing or is it legal?
@@noelelenes9090 you have committed a Federal offense and will have FBI, ATF, NSA and NASA agents knocking at your door any minute now.
🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂💀 the funny part is I tricked Brison palmer by taking the batteries out of his radio , hilarious af 👍🏻🍻🦾 It was just a funny prank me and my wife pulled on him that day that's just what friends do 💪🏼😎🍻
@@mrbyamile6973...Yeah, the MIB will fast rope from stealth helos and snatch you right up and take you to their leader for advanced interrogation. Good times!!
So glad I found this channel instead of some sad ham channel when surfing the interwebs.
dogs and cats will be sleeping together 🤣🤣 i love that tekmat
1st Ghost busters movie. Eon Quote. 👍🏻😆
I almost spit out my coffee 😂🤣
I stumbled upon this video while looking for some info on cheap radios to use in my complex. I just wanted to say I find your humour (yes, i spell homour with a U) awesome. I came for the radios, I stayed for the entertainment. Thumbs Up!!!
Watch out, Randy, that "Sad Ham" has it out for you. Great video as always sir.
I just noticed your radios have a nice coat of life on them.....respect.
The floating sad ham is very funny
I just have to tell you I've bn watching your tutorials & got inspired. Ran and bought guess what a uv-5r and doing my license in January in Johannesburg. Thank you.
Waiting for Amazon to deliver my BF-F8HP tomorrow. How to program on the keypad was exactly what I needed to know. Thank-you!
Honestly every ham radio operator has and still does use illegal equipment they are just jealous of people who don’t have a ham license are smarter then they are. I am a extra class and I don’t care what you use but I honestly am appreciating the information because I hate reading lol 😂 but I love learning about how to do things by watching and then try them and they work I’m grateful. So I’m sorry about those stuck up hammer’s but I appreciate it
Finally someone on youtube with clear instructions using radios. Thank you. Question: What type of radio is the TYT TH-UV88, HAM or GMRS? Is it similar to the UV-5R?
Ham not to be used on GMRS
I just found you and your channel this evening (having just purchased a Baofeng BF-blah blah blah), and YOU CRACK ME UP! I’ve watched 5 of you videos (for the content of course) but as I became familiar with you, you got funnier and funnier. My wife has been casting suspicious glances my way each time I lose it. Anyhoo, props, and thanks for the content.
Boy I just love this guy! I want to subscribe all over again!!
Just found this channel after buying my Baofeng UV-5R Pro radio and I just had to tell you that I think you channel is GREAT 👍🏻
Oh and I love how you rag on the HAM guys 😄
I'm so glad you are here.
I'm learning a lot in a short time.
Thank you for this information, as a newbie it was really helpful
Awesome!! I just found your channel and I'm new to radios....so I'll be back for more. Thanks and you make learning fun.😂
I learn a little more each time I watch one of your videos. Thanks
I'm just starting out with ham and iv been through a few guys on UA-cam but by far this guy is the best lui from Toronto Ontario
I salute you.
Thank you for sharing your videos...
The best how too guy. I love this guy. Awesome teacher of the science of doing this stuff. 😅
I would really appreciate it if you could send me that sad ham logo. I want to make a fridge magnet with it. LoL
Lov your vids, and comments, they crack me up plus I get the info I need for my beautiful Baofengs here on my youtube machine !!!!
You are hilarious. You keep doing you, and let the sad hams cry.
Works just like you said!!! Thanks a lot for this information. I have been trying to figure this out for over a year now! Love the comedy by the way. I used to do stand up back in the 80's in Los Angeles so if I say you have some funny material, you can believe it's good stuff.
Never throw away your owners/ users guide book, you will need it for future reference.
Can I just say I love your true but slightly sarcastic personality. Subscribed
Hey driving 80 in a 75 mph speed zone is illegal also but we all do it 😂.
Not if you tell the officer that you aren't driving you are traveling. Then in that case you can drive 140 in a 40 lol
This channel is very underrated, though i guess there arent that many radio nerds out there.
Oh shiet this is good stuff. Love the sad ham.
I'm literally loving how this guy steam rolls the peeps! Also I literally pressed the like button.
Love the Ghostbusters reference.
An American with a British sense of humour! Love it.
PS I also plan on setting up some portable simplex repeaters. I’m setting up those to be very portable . I’m not using a 12volt battery to power them just using the AA or AAA batteries that the simplex repeater is set up for. That way all I have to do is deploy the repeater in areas that we are and need them.
