Few artists have such an impressive resume or biography. The other girls in the video aren't part of "the band", which is just Neneh Cherry and her husband, Booga Bear.
Neneh Cherry's stepdad was the Jazz legend Don Cherry and her brother is the one-hit-wonder Eagle-Eye Cherry ("Save Tonight", US#5 1998). Born in Sweden in the 60s, when she moved to the UK as a teenager in the 70s, she joined up with legendary all-girl Dub/Punk Rock act The Slits as part of their touring entourage, then formed her own Noise/Avant Jazz combo, called Rig Rig + Panic in the early 80s.
She then met her husband/longtime collaborator Cameron "Booga Bear" McVey (the "gold-tooth smile" DJ in the video), an aspiring Dance Music producer. "Buffalo Stance" began as a remix of "Looking Good Diving" by Booga Bear's band at the time, Morgan-McVey. Over the years she has collaborated on records with Gorillaz, The The, Four Tet, Massive Attack, Chér, Chrissie Hynde, Pulp, Speech, Gorillaz, and Michael Stipe (of R.E.M.),
Technically not even a one-hit-wonder, she had a couple of big-selling LPs (Raw Like Sushi and Homebrew) and several MTV hits in the late 80s and mid-90s. She even had another Top10 US hit with "Kisses on the Wind" (US#8, 1989), and she also had a hit duet "Seven Seconds" with African Pop star Youssou N'Dour (UK#3, 1994). She has collaborated with all sorts of artists across many genres over the decades, but one little known fact about her is that she gave Biggie Smalls his big break when he guest-rapped on a remix of her Modern Rock hit "Buddy X" (US#43, 1993).
Another fun fact is that she helped several UK Trip-Hop acts get their start. (Trip-Hop was a genre of 90s music built around slow Hip-Hop beats, melancholy samples, and brooding vocals). But most of the major acts of the genre Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead (plus Nellee Hooper, the producer behind Soul II Soul who went on to work with Madonna, Sinead O'Connor, and Bjork) got their start practicing in the basement of the house she shared with Booga Bear and guesting on her first two albums.

You should check her hit song 'Manchild' and her massive 90's hit together with Youssou N'Dour, '7 Seconds'.

FUN FACT: Neneh Cherry was from Sweeden. The song title is about "Buffalo", which was a group of photographers, fashion designers, makeup and hair artists. "Buffalo Stance" is a pose with your arms firmly crossed over your chest. The "Stance" is an attitude of survival in the inner cities. The song also refers to Malcolm McLaren's song "Buffalo Gals".

Neneh Cherry was also a featured artist on a song by Youssou N'Dour, a Senegalese singer. The song was titled "7 Seconds", a song composed by Youssou N'Dour, Neneh Cherry and others. It was released in 1994 as a single performed by those two, reaching the number-one position in numerous countries; in France it stayed at number one for 16 weeks, which was a record at that time.
"7 Seconds" also won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song of 1994.
That song has over 100 million views and they sang it in English and French.

Her half-sister and her half-brother are one hit wonders here in the states.

Neneh cherry is one of my all time favourite artists and had several hits in the uk. I love her blend of different mutil genre of music and especially love that fact she worked with massive Attack before they released thier own music.

This used to be my jam back in the day! Neneh was a solo artist. You should check out Neneh's daughter, Mabel. She is getting quite a successful career of her own. Neneh also has a brother that is a singer that had a hit with Save Tonight. His name is Eagle Eye Cherry.
Such an underrated artist. She definitely paved the way for other female rappers. Oh and a gigolo is a dude who lives off of a woman usually trading it for sex.

This song was so much fun to roller skate to on a Friday night! Neneh Cherry had great cross-genre appeal and she wasn't afraid to tackle the big issues like AIDS (I've Got You Under My Skin). I learned the term "Buffalo Stance" from this song, and I remember she had a thing for wearing her hair wrapped in a towel and those huge gold earrings.

For rap/hip-hop this is pretty 80s - but it didn't sound very 80s in the 80s. It's aged better than expected.
At the end of the 80s there was a huge explosion of dance music in the UK inspired by the house music that originated in Chicago. There is an endless list of brilliant UK house tracks from that time.

Neneh Cherry was also involved in Massive Attack’s debut album Blue Lines as an arranger, they have similar styles but NC is way more “poppy” when compared to MA’s trip-hop moodiness. I think since you liked this groove, you’d like Massive Attack’s “Unfinished Sympathy”...fantastic song with a great video that was done in ONE TAKE through the streets of LA in the early 90’s. A lot of the people in the video were just people living their lives who couldn’t be bothered to get off the sidewalks during takes, but it makes the video that much better IMO! In fact diving into the Blue Lines album in its entirety is a great idea 👍

I was 7 when this came out in 1988 and she was one of the first female rappers I watched along with hip hop group Salt-N-Pepa at the time. Her half brother is Eagle-Eye Cherry he had a early 2000 hit song “Save Tonight” and her daughter Mabel is also an established music artist. Musical talent obviously runs in the family lol🔥🥰👍
