So funny that the American music industry didn't know how to market her. It was artists like her who introduced white boys like me to something other than rock and easy listening. I was never into rap or hip hop but she bridged the gap and produced something uniquely accepted by people of all walks. Thanks Neneh. You're still on my playlist to this day.

    I stan this absolute queen.
Neneh Cherry's stepdad was Jazz legend Don Cherry and her brother was one-hit-wonder Eagle-Eye Cherry ("Save Tonight", 1998). Born in Sweden in the 60s, when she moved to the UK as a teenager in the 70s, she joined up with legendary all-girl Punk Rock act The Slits as part of their touring entourage, then formed her own Noise/Avant Jazz combo, called Rip Rig + Panic. She then met her husband/longtime collaborator Cameron "Booga Bear" McVey, an aspiring Dance Music producer. "Buffalo Stance" began as a remix of "Looking Good Diving" by Booga Bear's band at the time, Morgan-McVey. Over the years she has collaborated on records with Gorillaz, The The, Four Tet , and Michael Stipe (of R.E.M.),
She had another Top10 US hit with "Kisses on the Wind" (US#8, 1989), and she also had a hit duet with African Pop star Youssou N'Dour ("Seven Seconds", 1994). She has collaborated with all sorts of artists across many genres over the decades, but one little known fact about her is that she gave Biggie Smalls his big break when he guest rapped on a remix of her Modern Rock hit "Buddy X" (US#43, 1993). Another fun fact is that she helped several UK Trip-Hop acts get their start. (Trip-Hop was a genre of 90s music built around slow Hip-Hop beats and brooding vocals). But most of the major acts of the genre Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead got their start practicing in the basement of the house she shared with Booga Bear.

She was living in the UK and mixing with late 80's / early 90's trip hop and dance pioneers; such as Bomb the Base and The Wild Bunch (who she name-checks in this track). Many of the members of the Wild Bunch went on to become the epic Massive Attack. I seem to remember that Neneh pushed them into the studio and maybe even paid for their first studio session. She's a legend, and also an early crush of mine.

And the strings that is heard in the song was played by another Swedish musician named Jonas Lindgren. Before Christian Falk died he had not seen one record with 7 seconds on it, not one example with his name on it. And he had to seek legal help only to get economic compensation for his work.

I LOVED your reaction to this video and also love that you like the song! This song came out in 1989......I was a sophomore in high school. This song ruled the charts and rocked the radio and dance clubs. I honestly to this day still have the cassette single of this song...back then they released the artists singles on a cassette tape with another album song on the other side so you could just buy the single song if you didn't want to buy the whole album. I loved your reaction.....you really got into it and I could tell that you like it. Your video made me soooo happy.....thank you for reacting to this song and giving me a happy boost I needed after a long day!

Neneh has my heart! I first heard this on my friends casette tape and we sneaked away from the main school building to this unused drama 'hut', put it on a little stero and DANCED, and you had better believe we did "the dive everytime we dance". Raw like Sushi I have owned on all formats now, right from vinyl, cassette, cd.... digitally 💖💖💖 She is a role model to me and has been since I was 12 when this was released! Thank you for the reminder of how awesome Neneh Cherry is, and huge love to you from across the pond. You got a new subscriber 😘

Kate Bush, Janet Jackson (PLEASE react to Rhythm Nation if you haven't heard it, the video....oh that video!!), Madonna, Annie Lennox, Missy Elliot, Mary J. Blige, Cyndi Lauper, Tracy Chapman, Debbie Harry......I could go on 😂💖

WE used to JAM to this Song a lot back in the day! 🎹 🎵
WOW, if i hadn't seen Your Reaction TODAY, there's NO way that i'd Remember this Song ('til TODAY), i have NOT heard of this Song since MAYBE 1990 Or 1991 'cause the Song quickly LOST Popularity as MORE NEW Artists came about in the 90's (COOL Memories of MY teeny-bopper YEARS, ha ha)!

Buffalo Stance was a SUPER HUGE dance floor hit in the clubs in the '80s. Also being a club DJ and remixer, this a song that I have remixed myself. For years, I would still put this in the mix every now and then in the clubs. The older crowd would flock to the floor, then have a lot of the younger crowd come to the DJ booth to ask who is that and became a fan of the song.

Hi. I am from the UK. The music from my school days was Two Tone Ska (late 70's early 80's). Black and white kids came together to create a new blend from the streets. It's very British and it's very working class. I have chosen three bands for you to check out:- The Specials - A message to you Rudy, Gangsters, Too much too young. Madness - One step beyond, Night boat to Cairo (live version on The Old Grey Whistle Test). The Selecter - On my radio. It would be great to get a reaction from you not only because of your age but as an American. I am guessing this music never crossed the pond.
