This was HUGE in UK and Europe, it won MTV Europe Music Award for best song of 1994 and stayed at number 1 in France for something like 16 weeks (which was about the same amount of time that Bryan Adams topped the UK charts with "Everything I do" in '91)
Same in Southamerica (Chile and Argentina)
28 year old song already.....I'm getting old. Still an amazing song....truly timeless classic.
7 Seconds,Dreams,Everything i do,i will always love you,Unbreak my heart,Take me on and that Meat Loaf tune dominated the charts in the UK,those were the days when real music was produced (MJ too he was always charting)
Youssou sings in French, English and Wolof…he’s incredible in all.
Thank you I’ve always wondered what language that was!
Translation
Don't see me from a distance, don't look at my smile
And think that I don't know what's under and behind me
I don't want you to look at me and think
What's in you is in me, what's in me is to help them
Roughneck and rudeness,
We should be using, on the ones who practice wicked charms
For the sword and the stone
Bad to the bone
Battle is not over
Even when it's won
And when a child is born into this world
It has no concept
Of the tone the skin is living in
(CHORUS)
It's not a second, seven seconds away
Just as long as I stay, I'll be waiting
It's not a second, seven seconds away
Just as long as stay, I'll be waiting
I'll be waiting,
I'll be waiting
I assume the reasons that push us to change
I would like that they forget about their color,
so that they can have hope
Too many views on race that make them desperate
I like the doors wide open
So that friends can talk about their pain and their joy
Then we can give them information, that will bring us all together
(CHORUS)
It's not a second, seven seconds away
Just as long as I stay, I'll be waiting
It's not a second, seven seconds away
Just as long as I stay, I'll be waiting
I'll be waiting,
I'll be waiting
And when a child is born into this world
It has no concept
Of the tone of the skin he's living in
And there's a million voices
And there's a million voices
To tell you what she should be thinking
So you better sober up for just a second
Interesting that it reminds you of Massive Attack. Because there are strong connections between Massive Attack and Neneh Cherry. She sang the backing vocals for one of their first songs, and Neneh Cherry "provided crucial financial support and in-kind assistance to the early careers of Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky during this period, even paying regular wages to them through their Cherry Bear organisation." (Wikipedia)
And Neneh was married to Cameron McVey of Massive Attack and their daughter Mabel is now a succesful singer as well.
Cheers , I did not know this well interesting back story !
yes indeed Neneh was vital in the nascent Bristol trip-hop movement, she was already respected due to "Buffalo Stance" and always looking for innovative sounds....
Tricky... That takes me back ;)
I have no words to express how much I love this song.🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
This song is a masterpiece that is just as relevant today as it was back then when it was first released. A timeless classic imo. So beautifully performed by both artists.
This song is produced by Swedish musician and producer Christian Falk who was one of the founding members of the iconic post punk band Imperiet. He also played the base track. RIP Christian.
One of her brothers is called Eagle-Eye Cherry, and is also a musician. There’s also Christian Cherry, who used to be a weatherman on Danish tv. 😊
And her daughter is Mabel. A very famous pop singer now who has done songs with many artists
Don't forget their father Don Cherry. Great Jazz musician, pioneer of world fusion music and multitalent. He played trumpet, fluits, piano, melodica, percussion and the African harp Doussn' Guni.
Wow,never knew
I never knew any of these things. Just another reason why this channel is so great. Thanks for everyone sharing info 😊
AND her sister is Titiyo, also a singer, whose "Come Along With Me " used to be played on the radio quite a lot. Frigging talented family, that one.
Youssou N’Dour is also a great soloist. “My Hope is in You” is one of his best songs. Also check out Miriam Makeba’s “Pata Pata.”
I am white and grew up listening to Pata Pata! My parents loved music regardless of colour.
@@merindabreytenbach85 - Pata Pata is so joyful and so much fun to dance to! I also love Africa is Where My Heart Lies. It’s my dream to visit Kenya, Tanzania, and the Congo.
Comparing Massive Attack with this song is not way off. The first language, N’dour uses is Wolof, an African language, and later it’s French.
Senegalese I believe?
Wolof is spoken in both Senegal and the Gambia, in west Africa.
Such an amazing song. My mum used to play this on repeat in the early 90s.
Same
This was HUGE in The Netherlands!!! You heard the song everywhere and they still play it now and again
mamaappelsap!!!!! :)
On December 31, 1999, I was at a huge open air New Year celebration in Geneva. This is the last song they played right before midnight. It created an incredible sense of peace and unity in the crowd. Then came the countdown and we all jumped into the year 2000 with Fatboy Slim's "Right Here Right Now" blasting in the city. Needless to say, the crowd went wild. What an epic night!
Meanwhile in London, I climbed a tree near Ben Ben and watched the fireworks from there while my friends were in the crowd below. I have not been to Geneva but came to Zurich Festival and hope to come next year (last came 2019 - the one that is every 3 years); I would love to come to Geneva too, any advice? I have family in both Zurich and Geneva and having fallen in love with Zurich, I am wondering if I will also think the same about Geneva (I love to travel).
@@marilynseptember21 Living in Geneva, it's culturally a crucial location, but TBH I don't really like the place, it's not that ugly, but it's not as nice as Lausanne or other place in Switzerland (or France): it's "too urban" for me... The Geneva state is tiny, and so there's not enough "space without concrete" for me. Not talking it's crazy expensive (but Zurich is too). But, of course it's my opinion, you might enjoy the place, I guess if you want to visit downtown, then it can be a good ride, but if you want to have some country side, stay in the Valais, or Vaud states. I think Lausanne is far more enjoyable and versatile for most people.
My bias: I'm French, growing in the middle of the France south west's forest and never-ending sand beaches of the coast, so I'm not at all attracted by urban location: I hate Paris...
Funny, I don't recall the 2k new year... I have more vivid memories of the 2k2 new year, with the Euro currency switch, we went to Canary Island with a friend for that event, and it was a crazy night... For the 2k eve, I must have been in Bordeaux, but can't remember the event. It's probable that we organized a huge "private party" as we used to do on the period. FatBoy Slim surely was in the soundtrack :).
Youssou. N’Dour is Senegalese superstar. Check out his wiki page.
Outstanding song it's brilliant and sounds better now than when it was released love it
this song is fascinatingly trilingual: French, English & Wolof (a West African language).. when i heard it in 1994, i was blown away because Neneh was breaking musical style stereotypes.. she (among several other musicians/groups) was asked by Wim Wenders back in 89/90 to imagine & write a song in the style they thought they would make 10 years into the future (1999) for the soundtrack of his massive movie "Until The End Of The World" (287 mins!): so she went all-out on a uniquely divergent future/electro style song called "Move With Me" (which also appeared in the movie "Sliver" years later - i think).. so she broke free from her stereotyped musical style from her "Buffalo Stance" debut days into incredibly diverse projects, including her most recent album: "Broken Politics" (highly recommended, btw).. she embraced exploration through many musical styles & her discography is a fascinating example/result! thank you for your reaction!
Which west African country it sounds Senegalese
@@sarahpagett9191 yep.. it was originally the tribal language of the Wolof People, & is now spoken in Senegal, Mauritania & the Gambia!
This one of my favourite songs of all time.
Pure goosebumps
Such a powerful song. Not many people got to hear this where I lived in a small country town back in the day. I'm so lucky I did. I wrote the words down how they sounded and sang along to it 😁
Youssou is a wonderful performer in any language.
He has a beautiful voice. Nenah compliments it with her vocal talent so well. Amazing song. Cant believe this song is nearly 28 years old.
I love this song
For me this is the best male-female duet song ever
Such a cool song. Goosebumps all over.
Timeless and a great message.
So happy you've found Youssou N'Dour, love love his voice. Check him out singing with Peter Gabriel "In your eyes"
Love this song, was a banger back in the day. Still is.
This song first came out in 94 when there were stresses in the racial identity of Paris. Certain Arrondissements of the city were virtual no-go areas as unemployed immigrant youth, mostly from Africa, felt excluded from French society and very much third class citizens.
La haine
Loved this. Was absolutely massive in the UK. Agree with the Trip Hop reference.
Iconic when it was first released, and still iconic today. What a beautiful song.
Ooh I love this, the 90s had some wonderful, amazing songs ❤️
I was wishing for you do this song a fantastic song and a fantastic vision for the world love it great reaction
I haven’t heard this in so long… such a brill song. Youssou has a stunning voice… that accent 👍🎵
I rember it. I was a kid then... Love it always!
World class music! Wolof is the language in the first verse. French the next verse. 1994 I was 18 at the time. I'm feeling VERY nostalgic ✌🏾✌🏾✌🏾🖤🖤🖤 songs about racism
And now we have emojis that separate us by skin colour. How sad the world has become.
@@dopiaza2006 really?
One of those songs once heard you never forget ❤️
This is one of my all-time favourite songs. I remember when it came out, I would play it in loop.
Saw him a couple of times live in the 80's and 90's. Amazing artist.
Neneh Cherry another fantastic musician from Sweden. It's been so long since I heard this beautiful song. Thank you for your reaction. :-)
Classic Song ! this was such a big hit in France! if you like Neneh Cherry, you should react to ''Woman''
Love this song.
So glad you reacted to this song,I haven't actually heard it since the 90s. They work so well together. Must put it back on my playlist
I loved this song when it came out. So underrated.
Oh my goodness!! I forgot how much I love this song!!!
When you said 'I don't know what to expect', I was like: man, pure, timeless greatness 💜
Thanks for your beautiful interpretation of the theme and meaning. This song always gives me chills!
I love this song , so deep, such harmony.
Also ive played 7 seconds Away every month for years & never tire of it, beautiful song
One of my all-time favorite songs. Great song!!!
Check out Manic street preachers - A design for life.
Yes!
has he done If you tolerate this?
Great song
I came across this song by accident and instantly fell in love with it! It’s the most beautiful song to hear on a morning walk when the sun is rising. Thank you!
Yay!!! So happy you reacted to this song. I love it so so much. Neneh is everything.
The beat and all the layers I love it!!! Also, I love when people incorporate their language in music. Nenah Cherry is great in this also. Child is so pure and not tainted. Great choice Jay!
I watched your face when the song said a million voices I knew you got it spiritually it's deep soul deep chil
Dren are a gift from heaven and adults corrupt them it's everywhere schools TV even in homes. Children are spiritually clean when they come down from heaven their spirit is innocent you see it in their eyes. This world is heart breaking. As f skin your born in its a blessing but man always seeks to curse. The word human means coloured man ie hue man I love that we were all created unique everyone of us we are all so beautiful. 😊
He sang on Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes. Stunning song especially the live version with Youssou in Athens 1987. I saw this concert in London. One of the best memories I have of PG.
Hi Jayvee! What a beautiful track to listen too. The video is just gorgeous. I can’t tell what Yousson is singing here but it’s beautiful all the same
Makes the hairs stand up 👏🏻👏🏻😍
It might have been mentioned before, but you've already heard Youssou N'Dour -- when you reacted to Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." Youssou is featured in a beautiful, soaring vocal solo/counterpoint as the song ends.
7 Seconds is a beautiful song, no question, but it's a different singing style than what he's known for. There are also other great songs for you to check out that feature the captivating power and range of Youssou N'Dour's voice.
Such a beautiful song. It was so famous. Youssou N'Dour is a very famous singer and composer. You should react to African music. There is so much talent all over the continent and particularly in Western Africa. You can start with Habib Koité and Ali Farka Touré, also Malian. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I agree. My favorite female artist is ASA who happens to be Nigerian. She's amazing. She sings in English and Yoruba. I'm challenging two Nigerian reactors to play her. How about you, Jayon? Try Bimpe, Jailer, Murder in the USA. I heard a lot about this song. It's beautiful. I love Neneh Cherry.
Amazing song. One of my favourites. I loved Neneh Cherry's music and a beautiful woman inside and out.
Manchild-Neneh Cherry
On Peter Gabriel's song "In Your Eyes" from the album "So". the one who sings at the end of the song is
Youssou N'Dour, on the live tour, was replaced by Papa Wemba. Saludos
You should listen "undiceded by youssou N'dour, neneh cherry and Deep Forest"... You won't regret it bro🤌And, yeah, he's from Sénégal 🇸🇳, Western Africa. He was born and grow in Dakar as am i🙏
First time hearing this, really nice! 🙂
Wow, your commentors are really wise and helpful.
Bellissimo 🤗❤
Can I just say this is one of my go to channel's after a night out when I'm chilling out. I love it, thank you for the great content 👍
Still a powerful song today! Infact I appreciate it more now im older.
Smooth very smooth
I had heard this before, but didn't know who sang it!! So a big thank you to you Jovaughan (sp?) ! I love to watch little kids play together, and in most cases color does not matter to them. Gives my heart a warm feeling 💌 , 'cause they aren't born prejudiced. Hope your weather isn't too bad, lots of people without power in the Northeast. Stay safe and warm !✌✌
Neneh is somewhat underrated.
I'd love to see you react to 'Love Can Build a Bridge' by Cher, Neneh and Chrissie Hynde with Eric Clapton on guitar.
This is an amazing tune with real meaning. It shows skin tone is manmade, not a natural distinction. So powerful.
That's a great old song!! greetings from Mexico!!
This is one of my all time favourites🔥
Always absolutely loved this song!
Oh man, I love that you reacted to this. It's been so long since I've heard this beautiful song, thank you!
Oh I looove this song!
This was a big hit in Europe (I am in Germany) btw her name is Nee Nee (Nay Nay) not Nina lol the message of the song is simple-anti racism
I have always love this song! Thank you for reacting to it. Check out more Neneh Cherry, next song should be "Woman" (from the same album as 7 Seconds).
Have not heard this in a while. Great song! 💖✨💖✨💖
Neneh Cherry is the mother of singer Mabel (Don't call me up) and married to the producer of Massive Attack, Cameron McVey, father of Marlon Roudette (Mattafix - When the beat drops out).
I think the real message in this song if you research is that at that time, in the nineties there was estimated that every 7 seconds a child dies from easily curable diseases In Africa while the rest the world stands by and watches
Please react to Neneh Cherry's Manchild!!!!!!
The song is sung in 3 languages, Wolof (one of the languages of Senegal). French, and English.
Always loved this song, it's in my list
Love Neneh ❤❤❤
Her brother Eagle Eye Cherry has greats songs for you to react
When he raps in French it reminds me of “La Belle et Le Bad Boy” from MC Solaar which is another beautiful song
Thank you! Always loved this song and haven't heard it in so long.
Massive hit in the UK
So glad you have finally reacted to this I've suggested it a couple of times! 😂 It's truly beautiful. He's Senegalese and is actually singing in 3 languages English, French and Wolof.
If you want more Nenah Cherry check out Manchild. She has a brother who is a singer called Eagle-Eye Cherry. He had a hit with a track called Save Tonight. He also dueted with Nenah on a track called Long Way Round.
I don't know if you are familiar with the singer Mabel but she is Nenahs daughter!
You are correct about it being easy to get lost in this song with headphones on. It has always been on rotation my different playlists. If you are not intimidated by a song being completely in another language you can check out "Im Nin'Alu" by Ofra Haza. This was a song that got a lot of airplay in the late 80's. I'm quite sure you would like it as well.
This song kill my soul every time! Thanks for share this with our beautiful community of sisters end brothers ❤✌
Could possibly be my favourite song of all time.
Neneh Cherry Swedish, mum to artist Mabel.
Thank you for your react,i love this song
You must listen to Red Clay by Youssou. It is unbelievable. You can really hear the Peter Gabriel influence in it.
Neneh Cherry's daughter Mabel had a hit with the tune 'Finder's Keepers'
This is a great song with a great message. I'm a very spiritual person and it reminds me of a passage in the bible. I don't know it word for word at the moment, but it basically says that you'll never enter into the kingdom of God unless you have the heart of a child. Just the pure innocence of a baby/child would be such a wonderful characteristic to possess for life. You have a wonderful channel here. I love the fact that you do reactions on all different genres of music. Keep doing what your doing. I think it's great.
Spiritual person read Bible ? Bible for stupids and that book not connect with God
Congratulations , greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏👏👏🙏🙏🙌🙌
A few songs in a somewhat similar vein I'd suggest you check out: "Alane" by Wes, "Im Nin'alu" and "Galbi" by Ofra Haza, "Aïcha" by Khaled and the cover version of that song by Outlandish, and "Le Dernier qui a parlé" by Amina.
P.S.: For something more recent, try "Autre espèce" by Disiz.
Great song, great reaction 🙏
