    I love how most video essays analyze games from the perspective of someone analyzing the game, but it was refreshing to see someone take it from a player perspective as I think the way Omori subverts expectations for its players and does its reveals and mysteries separately from the core gameplay is the best part of the game. One of my favorites deserving of a great video like this

      It really is. To me, the enjoyment when it comes to gameplay is heightened when the story that goes with it is excellent. In the case of Omori, the gameplay makes a lot more sense when you learn the meaning behind all the *spoiler* phobias. The final boss in the game is nothing short of brilliant from a narrative and metaphorical standpoint.
      Thanks for taking time to watch!

    I remember discovering this game simularly (a week after seeing some reletable memes of Sunny, the game was released on Game Pass), and I naively played it. Then at the horror parts (mainly at the end) I literally had to cover the small window with my hand because I was so scared (I might just be a massive coward)

      The horror parts very much disturbed me as well. What made it all the better was the lack of context behind it all. They threw it all at you, and just when it seemed like they weren't going to have a good explanation for it, they hit you with the reveal. The reveal is hands down the most shocking moment I've seen in a game in a long time.

    Let me just say... That isn't it. Despite the masterpiece of a story it has, every single detail woven into your mind to create this magnificent heart-breaking tapestry that you will never forget... there is more. There are multiple routes to this game, all with unique gameplay, not to mention the system it has of a WTF Value, similar to Undertale's Fun Number system, where every playthrough is assigned a value with unique gameplay changes meaning that *every single playthrough will be slightly different.* The amount of secrets and interwoven game pathways and hidden truths buried so deep within the depths and crevices of this game... Most people who play on their first time *don't even scratch the surface.* I'm not kidding. Not to toot my own horn, but Omori connoisseurs like me will know what we're talking about when we say this.

    I remember how i found Omori. So, i usually follow a youtuber "Tuonto" and back then i only followed him for his genshin videos, but a few months after Omori came out, he made a video about his playtrough, but i told myself i wont watch it because im not really a fan of new stuff and i hardly get into it. But after a month or so I decided I'll finally watch it because it always came up in my home page in youtube, at first I was like "well thats a cute game" , but as it went on i started to get really interested in it. I finished watching the full game after like 2 days, and I remember I finished watching it at around 1am on a june night in my bed, and i cried so much because of the ending, and especially because of The Final Duet. This game i can absolutely say it changed my life. It's seriously a masterpiece

    As someone who’s both a fan of narrative storytelling in games and a fan of (certain) rpgs, it’s very interesting to hear from someone who both has similar yet different tastes and how they view this game.
    For me, the most important part of that beginning, aside from making the player like the dream world more than real world at the start, was to establish an attachment to Basil, and so for the rest of the game I was just wanting to get precious flower boy back.
    And then the game makes you wake up

      @@StrictlyMediocre personally I think the train sequence is a result of the way headspace is built. Based on how blackspace is just beyond the edge of sweetheart’s castle I like to think blackspace is under headspace but also occupying any space Sunny’s mind isn’t conscious of. This would include the space between vast forest and orange oasis. So the train basically travels through blackspace for a bit. But that’s just my theory

    Omori was pretty interesting in terms of feel. (Vague spoilers ahead)
    At the beginning of the game, I enjoyed hanging out in Headspace with Omori and his friends, and although, I, too, generally can't hang around too long without a compelling narrative, the game was lent to me by a friend and I KNEW there was something up with it. I didn't know what, but what little I had seen pushed me through until the horror started.
    Now, I am TERRIBLE with horror. It was both a dreaded and welcome part of the game, because it gave me the story I desired, but also. like. _scawyyyyyyyyy wwwwww_ During the first real world segment, going down the stairs, I remember getting really stressed as the hands appeared, and when Mari started knocking at the door, I didn't even check to see who it was. That knocking was _terrifying_, and I went right back to bed without even _checking_ what it was. The real world was scary, and I would rather be in Headspace, never to wake again....
    By the end of the game, I was done with Headspace. Kel knocking in the morning managed to get me to answer, and when I saw it was a normal human being--and, even better, a friend--I was willing to go out and have fun. The real people had changed (unsurprisingly), and suddenly, I wanted to be in the real world. I wanted to meet them each day and know who they were now. At the same time, Headspace steadily revealed itself as a construction--a dream. And it was fun for a while, but by the final day, I just wanted to wake up after each night and meet my friends again without the mega journey placed in between. I acquired the good ending, and as I left the room you wake up in, I told myself I never wanted to see their Headspace sprites ever again (the game must've found itself funny; I went the other way even before I saw Basil).
    I find it astonishing how my own perspective of the two spaces reflected the arc of the game, from Sunny preferring Headspace to slowly reentering the real world. I only remembered that watching this and seeing the first real world night again, but yeah! Omori good.

    • @StrictlyMediocre
      @StrictlyMediocre  Рік тому +11

      Hahaha I actually felt the same way playing omori too! As soon as I met the friend group irl, I wanted to be there more than headspace. *SPOILER* I wanted to learn more about everything as I knew something deeper was going on- a big secret that sunny was clearly hiding from everyone (even you the player.) The final day was pure chaos, both in headspace and irl. I was so invested I didn't want to get off.
      but yes. Omori good.

      what i like about headspace and real world is- lore. headspace has an interesting lore, with humphrey, the cowboy guy, abby, and you are hooked and interested to know more. but then- what does it accomplish? it’s all in sunny’s head. none of it really exists. if you play the hikkikomori route first, your interest then shifts to the implications around mari’s passing. and then, when you play the true route, you start becoming interested in the real world lore. aka, mari’s death, but also what happened to your friends, the simple and normal everyday lives of the people in town that would be boring to everyone yet their stories have such heart to them, and headspace becomes shallow and boring, just silly non-sequiturs without much else to them. and i think that was what really got me. the world in your head could never compare to the real world and how fulfilling it feels.

    i just finished omori! it was so good and its really well written. at first i was skeptical like you as im also not a fan of rpgs however omori surprised me. doki doki literature club was the same to me. im not a fan of anime visual novels and dating simulators but i stayed because everyone said it gets real good and it did! it had a cute story, artstyle, and dialogue that got darker and darker overtime. it really decieved the player while seeding out small hints as to what was happening. have u played it? id love a video from you covering ddlc.

    This game is also the kind of game you cant play just once. This game has an abundance of endings and a whole other route. Depending of if you open the door for Kel on three days left, you get to play either the true route or the hikkomori route. I’ve currently played every true route ending and I’m restarting to play the hikkomori route

    I know this may sound stupid, but the most scary moments for me were everything that happened on the first time you are in the real world mainly because my irrational fear of vomit and throwing up (I swear I was the most stressed out on that part, I lowered the volume to zero and I couldn't look at my Switch's screen on the "You threw up" part). Anyways, the whole game is a masterpiece and it's worth playing that hide and seek part at the prologue lol. Easily my favourite game of all time

    Omori was extremely good for me. Even if we ignored the whole game (which we shouldn't, it's my favourite of all time until Deltarune releases), it gave me 3 months of free therapy in the form of recurring lucid dreams right in a moment of grief, letting me chat with cooperative mental constructs that let me learn more of my relationship with the entities they imitated, and also of me. Omori is a truly special experience, and I really hope you gave In Stars and Time a shot, as that game improves on most aspects of this one, except the music. I consider Omori the pinnacle of the Earthbound Descendant, but only because ISAT had practically nothing to do with it. I love it to bits. I will say that the theory scene is a bit wack and disregards evidence tho XD
    17:37 For example, Mom said that there's no electricty. You eat raw steak, so you get sick. Sunny is too disconnected from reality to notice, and doesn't use the stove
    21:07 I always recommend the very first trailer to release, because it has few spoilers, but captures quite a bit of the overall essence.
    EDIT: Bonus fanfic writing tip with Big Spoilers. To write OMORI, write AUTO from Wall-E, and do it after watching some reward specification videos from Robert Miles. OMORI is a machine, who had a badly specified reward function, and a model of the world that assumed friends having truth made the happiness of Sunny necessarily negative. That was override A113. Sunny is the Axiom. And you can't be sad if you're dead, explaining the whole final battle ^^. OMORI = AUTO.

    When you said "TLOU Part II, Inside and Outer Wilds are my favourite games", I was immediately hooked 'cause they're my favourite games too (with Journey). And I didn't know Omori before your video, so thank you for the discovery without showing too much of the game. By the way I've seen your other video about Outer Wilds, great video, keep up the good work, I've subscribed !
    So Omori takes about 20h to finish ? Wow. And is it scary like depressing or more like a thriller (ex : the movies "Get Out" or "The Shining")?
    I'm happy to have discovered your new channel because you have a good analysis and good editing skills, and also you seem to have the same taste as me : you're trying to discover new unique and weird experiences in video games. It's rare. Most of them are cool : "Little Nightmares", "Everybody's Gone To The Rapture", "It Takes Two", "dreams", "Flower", "Portal 2", "Death Stranding" (a game that fits your essay by the way 'cause the game trailers lied and the game twists at the middle). A very few of them are mind blowing and gems like Outer Wilds.
    By the way I need to try the Stanley Parable, heard it's good.

      Thanks for watching my videos and subscribing!!! Glad you were able to discover Omori through my video.
      Yeah I would say it takes roughly 20hrs to complete. It’s more psychological horror rather than thriller. Lots of creepy and unsettling sequences and imagery, but it doesn’t completely overtake the game. It’s both the cute adventure game that’s advertised and a psychological horror game underneath. It’s a unique kind of story that can’t really be compared to any other story out there. I’d like to think I’m pretty good at calling out how a story is gonna turn out. I had no idea with this one.
      Death stranding is definitely on my bucket list! My next video will be on the game Inside unless another idea comes up. I definitely want to find and make videos on games that are lesser known. Those have been the ones giving me unique experiences lately.

    • @StrictlyMediocre
      @StrictlyMediocre  Рік тому +1

      I plan on making a video about my experience with Undertale after the video I’m currently working on, but one of the things I think that kept me from getting invested in the game was my failure to be patient. I gave the game two attempts, and both of them had me quitting at the same point. I’m going to give the game ONE more shot, this time I’m going to push myself through to the end instead of quitting midpoint. I’m hoping it’ll be something I like, because the praise and constant mention of the game is too big to ignore.

    And all you had to do was open their own website, lol. The game is rated M for violence and blood, the trailer show many horror scenes and has unsettling soundtrack that is clearly intended to be a theme of a man going insane. There are also some mini-games on the website that include horror sprites and handdrawings of raining blood, eyes in things, a cut off ear and maggots around it. So, basically you just bought a game blindly even though authors never intended horrors as a twist or something. It's the same as if you bought Conker Bad Fur Day(with M rating on it) and was surprised it has sexual themes, shit jokes and e.t.c. despite looking like a child's game.

    • @StrictlyMediocre
      @StrictlyMediocre  Рік тому

      That's understandable.
      For me, the term "Psychological Horror" has such a loose and broad meaning when it comes to games from what I've noticed. I've played a few games before Omori that were classified as Psychological horror (Hellblade: Senua's sacrifice and Needy Streamer Overload just to name some) and to me, they didn't feel like they belonged in that genre, so the genre has always been a throwaway for me as I've learned not to expect anything from it. I should have gone more in depth on my explanation in the video.
