The Problem with “Lots of Game Content”
With massive games like Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey and Starfield, the initial desire of these kinds of games is for it to have "lots of game content." We want to play these games for hours and hours and be the biggest they can possibly be. But asking for quantity can bring negatives that far outweigh the "positive" that is length.

Why is it Hard to Be Evil in Video Games?

    I was thinking about this after beating both KoTOR games and starting an evil run. It was incredibly dull, especially the first planet. The rewards were fine too, but there was no challenge in finding the worst solution. I find the fun in RPGs in figuring out the best possible solution.

    Evil requires good writing to show how a person can arrive at an extreme and immoral position through the choices, events and challenges in their life. The world is full of ambiguous or loathsome people whose actions only make sense when you see the world through their eyes. An RPG needs to make a player stop and really think of how terrible the world must be, and how unfair it is towards those people that they felt they had to give in and seek easy, selfish answers to complex, risk filled questions. One character for a roleplay I came up with was such an evil, cowardly person who traded their free will to be part of a race of superbeings. That is about as senselessly evil as it gets without context. But they were born a slave, knowing that their father was a rapist and mother a victim. They were sold as a child to a farmer who'd hand out beatings like they were rations, and they had to learn how to negotiate with other slaves and their overseers to get anything. When marauders attacked the farm, they betrayed their owner to get into the good graces of the pillaging bandits to join them, choosing the raider life to not be a slave, and adopting the "right of the strongest" mentality, where you concede you're not strong, so you attach yourself to those who are. And that worked for about as long as it took for one town to stand up to their predations, and hunt the gang down for the one attack they didn't commit. Surrendering to the law, my character then pleaded their innocence, demanded a trial, proved that the posse had targeted the wrong gang for the wrong crime, and also bribed and blackmailed some of the jury, of course. All very questionable actions, but understandable from someone who simply didn't want to die, and played the rotten hand life had dealt them. Over the course of their future adventure, they found themselves captive by a race who offered a simply choice: join or die. Joining would mean becoming subjugated to the collective mind, ruled over by a single monarchical being. But also gaining power and abilities, a tempting prize to any gamer. But the permanent loss of free will would normally equate character death, unless you have a skilled group who are willing to abide by the accompanying restrictions. Not to mention the faction were supremacists. But what clinched it was that this simply made sense for my character's journey. They had been abused, accused, shunned, distrusted and forced to look over their shoulder their entire life. And here there was a group that offered strength not only through superiority, but in numbers. Within a society where your every thought is known by all, there is no shame, no regret, no distrust. The actions of your fellow beings are pure and honest. No more betrayal. The love of your kin can be felt intimately, and you can know for certain that they will come to your aid, stand with you against the dangers of the world, and will give their lives for the security of your species. Something no regular person of the normal races has ever shown them, or could ever show with such clarity. What is the loss of free will, against such a bargain? Free will allowed those slavers who raised them to put themselves into a position where they were a commodity. Free will gave their owner the choice between being kind to the slaves he kept, or whipping them. Free will allowed the bandits to reign free to inflict death and pillage on a struggling world. Under this adopted race, there can be no enslaving one's fellow beings, no inequality between each other, no crime can be permitted against one's fellow members. And why should my character care for the other races who cannot see the perfect harmony the collective offers? They have only ever confirmed their own inferiority through their violence and exploitation. In fact, the world would be a better place if they indeed were all exterminated, to make way for a better species, who know there is a better way. That, I think, is how you play a truly evil character, and have their evil make rational sense by the experiences they had.

    Hot take: Shin Megami Tensei should be WAY more popular because of this, the morality system is largely Law vs Chaos, bith if them have... Likable aspects, sometimes more than others, sometimes one more than another Or you can just take the Neutral Route, which largely involves not taking a side or doing your best to deal with both

    • @mongodroid4842
      @mongodroid4842 День тому

      only thing i don't like about SMT's morality is because neutral is usually the designated good ending (harder to get, gives you more content, generally more bittersweet endings rather than the "your dream world is made and it sucks!" endings of the other routes), which is why i will glaze strange journey until i am dust and bones, the OG neutral ending fucking sucks (you're just delaying the inevitable) which make the extreme options more interesting

    • @baxterbruce9827
      @baxterbruce9827 День тому

      @mongodroid4842 The thing about Strange Journey is... That's what MOST of the Neutral Endings throughout the series are, they're just more blatant about it, Neutral ending is ostensibly a reprieve for humanity that pushes the demons and angels out for a while but not usually forever Although, might I suggest Strange Journey Redux? The remake added some quality of life, a new dungeon and a few new endings, most of which are kinda "Softer and overall better for humanity" versions of the original endings for each alignment, as a perfect example, the Old Law ending basically resulted in world peace through the death of free will, the New Law ending resulted in world peace without literally brainwashing the entire planet

    I think Caesar is appealing to those that have not actually done the readings. Caesar quite literally misrepresents Hegel in justification of his crimes. Once you start thinking about his idea of going to a strong civilization that lasted it doesnt make any fucking sense why he chose Rome when he could have chosen many other civilizations that lasted as long or longer. He is a larper and Arcade Gannon’s critique of him is so on point.

That game does many things beautifully but i believe that rockstar gave us an answer to a question you will find very early in the game: how do you rob and kill people pleasantly? Even the main character is struggling with his morality Try being bad in rdr2 outside of main missions. It feels horrible and very stressefull in so many ways it can actually feel like a horror game

  • @TheLikenessOfNormal

    The issue with Caesar is that while he has intelligence and reason his literal plan is “I made this regressive super authoritarian power with the goal of destroying the NCR and then having the legion collapse and if I’m right the remnants from both will come together and become moderates.” It’s actually high key retarded.

    I love really big games and I don't "complete" them most of the time. Makes it more real to me to have the freedom to do everything but knowing that there is alway stuff I haven't seen. I don't even start linear games nowadays. I wan't to create my own story - if I wanted to experience the ones of other people, I'd rather watch a movie.

    Don’t help or destroy Megaton if you want Sergeant RL-3 or any neutral companion. I did both of these choices in different gameplays and I couldn’t get Sergeant RL-3. The thing is there are better companions than Sergeant RL-3 and there is the fact that you can get Jericho too, so you do you if you want. Also don’t destroy Megaton if you’re doing the level-up glitch or if you want a strength bobblehead.

    I think the ability to choose evil makes your good choices more meaningful. You could have been bad, but you were good. The game didn't force it upon you. You aren't just following the objective. You made a good decision over an evil one by your own volition.

  • @mrmoviemanic1
    @mrmoviemanic1 2 дні тому

    This is why Fallout 4 imo does the best job with evil choices. SPOILERS The biggest option is also one that divides all factions and results in most people’s deaths, but it is the most emotionally connective to the player character because they are doing it for their son, who has a society of their own that highlights a form of flourishing factors, but instead of being able to talk them into sharing, they talk you into wiping out half the factions. It’s a game that really highlights that the evil choices aren’t just simple ones like (sure I’ll kill you for money) but more so that you will kill for someone else’s idea or to make them see you.

  • @giffymessiah3935

    I feel like the reason why it is somewhat impossible to be evil in the video game is because each video game has a world that you’re somewhat born into. so if you’re looking at something in real life right so a lot of people do things that may seem rewarding because it is in their world, there’s rules and regulations that everybody has to follow so you would make the comparison with GTA five so with that you know you’re in a world to where mostly everybody gets rewarded for crime. right I could be the same thing with a lot of what we see today but if you’re looking at fallout 3 fallout new Vegas, it’s a world where you can be good and bad. It’s pros and cons of what that is. Even in the walking dead to where you can make those decisions to where you would have to do bad things is just because that’s the world that you’re into and that world is created by the creators of those video games.

    The overall plot is meant for you to be a hero. You blow up Megaton and yet you still save the wasteland. You murder the Rachni queen and you still save the galaxy. You harvest the Little Sisters and you still go on to defeat Andrew Ryan. The evil choice is just a detour on the heros journey, and so it doesnt feel like writing fleshes it out. Sure the game may reference it, but the actual plot hardly changes. The only game that comes close to fleshing out the evil option is probably KOTOR. Even then its often a matter of having more plot, or just some extra resources: ill take plot all the time

  • @slimjim877

    Its boring bfing evil because the writers dont put the effort in. Its always "save the town from slavery" or slaughter the guards and put the peasants in chains" and the only difference is the gold you get and a few lines of dialogue further down. No effort is put in to actually make the choice impactful and alter the overall story. In a game like Fable for example, it works because its goofy, and light hearted with no seriousness to it. In fallout it's hollow because of how serious it is.

  • @totallylegit4092

    I usually play a mix. I never have a full "good" playthrough. I make decisions based on what is happening. Sometimes the best RPG moments are when you make the "evil" decision because you feel like that is indeed the correct thing to do. That all elusive grey area which life is full of but so few good RPG's can capture.

    I think my reasoning is in Skyrim it comes to my type of play through and I feel bad when killing innocent or murdering and the only time I have done quests such as the dark brotherhood or thieves guild is on accident the first time around and for trophies. Other than that I despise those quests for some reason, but then fallout 4 I am the same mostly and only choosing to get rid of the children of atom. It’s about getting to know characters and having interactions with them and feel almost like neighbors. Even majority of Deadra quests I do not do and only really do the ones that don’t have any consequences. Also never done the vampire quests for dawnguard. Idk just depends on who you are. Although I would have to make a specific character to be bad.
