This is the Marian Anderson voice in its absolute prime. It's so beautiful that it's almost painful. Her legato line is perfection and her tone is flawless. This is THE best version in existence by a female singer without question.
@@rachealbrimberry8918 It's an error. The only "Ave Maria" Maria Callas ever recorded was the one by Giuseppe Verdi from his opera "Otello". UA-cam made the error.
I saw her perform live when she visited St Vincent & the Grenadines in the 1950s, and felt like I was in heaven. Her rendition of spirituals was true perfection.
This is good no doubt, but a truly touching rendition of Ava Maria, for my money, can be found on UA-cam by Nell Carter, singing, and a hearing impaired lady on an episode of her comedy, "Give Me A Break". Encourage you to look it up. It is truly touching as the young lady signs as Nell sings. It is very emotional. Shalom Y'all! from Kentucky.
Her voice is amazing...it must have been so blessed with complete harmonics that it projects and survives so we'll through and despite the old recording technology of her era.
Every time I hear her sing, and especially this song, it touches my heart. Respect for this lady who had a rough time getting chances to sing in public. Fortunately she was supported by many influential people such as Roosevelt so the "haters" couldn't just overlook her! She deserved every chance she got and she worked so very hard. respect

Thank you very, very much for sharing. A truly emotional experience to see this film clip. I was fortunate to hear this great person in 1961 at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico! I might know just a little about how difficult and cruel it must have been for her in an all "white" career, as I experienced discrimination myself living in NY and being of mixed ethnic origin. Regardless, NY greatly influenced my musical life, in spite of the pain and loneliness. some of the great Black artists I heard; Leontyne Price in her met debut, James Earl Jones as Othello, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davies and more. Thanks again from Down Under.
When she sang for segregated audiences in various Halls, she would bow first to the White guests, briefly, then bow for a long, long and heartfelt moment. She was a very humble and expressed such love for her people. I've seen a couple of documentaries on this woman. Just recently, actually. I recommend that you try to find one to view. I promise you, you will experience every emotion possible and end up with a mad respect for this lady, the likes of which you have never known. God bless her and her courage, contribution to progress and inspiration, as well as her example of humility and Grace.

Ave Maria! maiden mild, Listen to a maiden's prayer; Thou canst hear though from the wild, Thou canst save amid despair. Safe may we sleep beneath thy care, Though banished, outcast, and reviled - Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer; Mother, hear a suppliant child! Ave Maria! Ave Maria! undefiled! Very beautiful indeed - but not Italian. The words are originally English, by the Scottish author Sir Walter Scott, but then the Austrian composer Franz Schubert set it to music using a German translation; but here, Schubert’s musical setting is being sung with English lyrics (I’m guessing, the original lyrics).
You're probably just too young to have heard of her. A scandal erupted in 1939, when she was not allowed to perform in Constitution Hall because the Daughters of the American Revolution did not allow a Black opera singer in the hall. It caused a national ruckus. The then First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, invited her to perform on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It was attended by nearly 100,000 people. She was also - eventually - the first Black singer to sing at the Metropolitan Opera. But that only happened 16 years later. She stopped performing in the mid 1960s. I'm assuming you were born after that or were very young at that point in time.
I just heard about this lady, so, decided to listen to her voice. Wow, it's so perfect you'd think it was altered, but that wasn't any way possible back then. Gifted.
I dont know her but after listening to this she is indeed gifted. You know what when you have feelings for somebody you dont care about your age.Thats me.I think my somebody knows my age. However it make me think that i might be a hindrance to his success and i dont want his reputation to be tarnished before he becomes famous .you know what it's up to him what he really wants and what's in his heart and what makes him happiest.I will be waiting because I do not want anybody else but him.
