She admitted that when she first tried it out she was worried by the length of the phrases in a slow tempo and put the copy away. Fortunately for us all some time later she took another look at the song. A unique artiste and a wonderful person.

Wow! I love Marian Anderson's rendition of Schubert's "Ave Maria," but I wasn't aware that she had sung it on the Ed Sullivan Show. Interestingly, Schubert wrote this not as a setting of the traditional Catholic prayer, but as part of a secular song cycle whose lyrics are from an epic poem known in English as "The Lady Of the Lake." It is often sung with the Latin text of the Catholic prayer, but I love this version not only because of Ms. Anderson's ethereal voice, but also the fact that she sang it with the original German lyrics. As for the Ed Sullivan Show, it is rerunning (in 30-minute edited episodes) on Me TV on Sunday evenings as of 2021. I sure hope they air this segment sometime.
