Everyone says immersion is the best way to learn but the key is to actually be immersed. Foreigners in any country are prone to living "a bubble life" if they're not actively trying to learn.
You can learn by yourself, talk to me in korean, korean class101 so many resources online you just need passion. With speaking you can just use hellotalk or kakao I think it’s called?
hellotalk is really good if you take the time and effort. Lmao but most guys I came across weren't rlly there to help and were just there to mess around and mingle etc. So every time I say I'm just looking to learn they stop talking to me smhshsh But in general talk apps are great

Foreigners who stayed in Korea but doesn't know how to speak in Korean is just lazy or are just procrastinating.... I did it in 18 months to learn Level 1 all the way to Level 6 so most ppl can do it and you would only need at least Level 4 for daily and formal stuff
I use an app called "LingoDeer" and it's super helpful!! I've learned so much Korean through it, you should try it out if it's available in your app store
True. But there's no 1 way to learn it. You have to start somewhere. They might have classes in schools like Middle school, High school or college. If not that then you can find an online tutor but you probably have to pay for that. You can watch movies and tv shows. Podcasts and stuff like that. Namjoon from Bangtan learned English through these ways and it's pretty amazing how far he got with it. You have to be persistent and determined because if you're too scared then you'll never learn and if you give up in the beginning then you'll forget everything you learned later in life. It's a consistent thing you have to do everyday like working out. If you want results it needs to be a lifestyle change. I almost live, sleep and breathe Korean content lol Things are coming along slowly but it's fun recognizing words when watching stuff. Rewatching things helps too. I know that's a lot but it's all needed to learn new things
Agreed! I've learned Chinese, Spanish, French and Korean, and I think Korean is one of the easiest foreign languages to learn, even easier than Spanish and French, 1000% easier than Chinese. So definitely not a difficult language, there are no plural forms, verb conjugation isn't that difficult, and the writing/reading/letter system is super easy. So I think it's interesting that people in this video described it as a really difficult language.
principessa3x It’s really based off perspective. I only knew English and Telugu before speaking Korean and having no experiences in language learning out of the romance languages at school, I thought Korean was the hardest language grammar wise and vocab wise I’ve come across so far. They say that Chinese grammar is easier for English speakers (while chinese pronunciation is not) and that Japanese pronunciation is easier for English speakers (while the grammar isn’t) ... but Korean has both difficult grammar and pronunciation. Spanish and other European languages would be easier for English speakers due to similar grammar, cognates and easier pronunciation. Though I can admit there are some parts to Spanish/Italian/French that are harder than Korean, Korean at an advanced level causes you to change the way you think completely. You have an interesting perspective though. I’ve never heard someone say this before.
Yes, definitely based on perspective of course. I have heard some experts agree that Korean is an easier language to learn bc it's more intuitive to English native speakers at least but I imagine it is much different if English is not your native tongue. Always interesting to hear others' perspectives on it!
I think it might be difficult for europeans since european languages have quite similar grammar system and the korean (/asian) grammar system is completely different
Korean is an easy language. That's for sure. Now I'm learning Arabic, because I'm arab, but my whole life I've been grown as a Russian. And aside from Russian, Romanian and English I didn't speak any other languages. So I'm learning Arabic now. And that shit is hard af. 💀
If that lady wanted to learn and speak korean she could. She has everything available to her, but clearly she prioritizes other things because she's learning Portuguese.. hmmm
Yeah, She was just bragging nonsens. She speaks all those languages, and in addition she is learning portuguese, yet she doesnt make any effort in learning a language in the country she is living in....
She was being honest though and maybe less than it being a priority but because she had a general interest and could connect with the langue more... I hunk the judgement from both of y’all is harsh considering she was trying to be real and open about he limitations
tbh she is already learning Portuguese and just switching over to learn korean kind of sounds like a waste. if she really wanted to and will risk that then yea she should, but it’s not really easy learning languages so it would be good if she could learn korean after she learns Portuguese
but she said those exact words "I work at a university but when there's holidays I travel, if I really wanted to learn I'd just stay here and learn it"
S 2 I think you are right if you are talking about people who actually live in korea for a long period, they should really know(at least) the basics. but, in my opinion- for tourists who only travel -that is not the case... I'm from the middle east and yet I don't expect tourists to speak my language. I also communicate in English while traveling all over the world. The fact that most people leran english make it easier for tourists from different countries to travel...
Korean is not difficult cuz it's been like 1 year since I have learnt Korean so it's not too difficult . If a person gives his\her best in learning a specific language which he\she wants to learn.💜
they won’t understand anyway lordt... i just think it’s disrespectful to visit any country and not know basic grammar and how to get by without using English (unless you’re on a short vacation of course)
I'm really late to this conversation, but yeah I agree with the fact that Korean isn't expensive learn considering the abundance of free resources online. And that there is a general notion of English speakers feeling a sense of entitlement and having the expectation that others should conform to fit them (when especially English speakers don't tend to extend such consideration when foreigners come to visit). However, taking the time to learn can be hard, of course there are many that make excuses for themselves, but there individuals that really struggle with learning the language despite putting time aside, and there are individuals that migrate to Korea and work several jobs to support themselves (and potentially dependent family members). I wish I could type all if this in Korean, but my level of writing isn't advanced enough for it.
I took lessons in Korean Culture Center in Turkey and I think Korean Language is really easy to learn, it is similar to Turkish language just letters are different. These languages from same language family. I like that video, actually I like all of your videos, I hope you get what you deserve! :) We love you Jay! I hope one day I come to Korea (probably when I join university I will come to Korea)
Natasa Ma exactly but if a foreign wants to learn them whoever is Turkish or from another country he or she should love to learn them because it can be hard if don't love learning languages hehehee
I took lessons at the Korean Cultural Center in Madrid, Spain. But KCC is not user-friendly. They don't have service hours for students who are working. Their schedule flexibility is horrendous. That's why I quitted after 2nd course. And 1 class a week, 60 hours per year is quite a slow pace. You forget everything from one course to the next.
I’ve been living in Busan for almost a year now but my Korean fluency is still poor haha but I lately I can understand what they say better than before. Still got a long way to go haha
I think also it may take time since in Busan they have 사투리 (satoori) which is a dialect and even my friend who is Korean says they can’t understand them😂
You don't need money in my opinion. I learned Korean completely for free to a decent conversation level and if I ever lived in Korea I feel like that practice would be enough to get better. There's no excuse people😊
omg change your username you koreaboo i hate it when people learn korean just bc of kpop its annoying and uncomfortable to those who are actually korean
That woman that teaches at a university is just making excuses. She sounds like she knows absolutely no Korean. You don't "pick up" a language unless you're a baby or toddler, you have to make a concerted effort to study and practice it. I knew people that lived in Korea for 10+ years that couldn't even string a basic sentence together. It's actually sad when people don't learn the language of the country they live in
cust0mx yeah I happens sometimes in the states as well vice versa which is pretty sad, if you learn just 1 sentence a day and know how to use it, one day you gonna find yourself good in the language
하하하하하 not to sound mean or anything, but I find it pretty dumb for someone to go in a foreign country and not even know the surface layer of basics... :/ like, how are you gonna order food?? 💀💀💀
Ï- HÖBÌ yeah I think people are afraid of learning something new. I would say its def hard for foreigner to learn Korean because they are less likely exposed to the Korean language than Korean people are in English. But even when I take that into account, people are too discouraged to learn
하하하하하 that's true, especially if you're older. I get that, but honestly💀 the whole "It takes a lot of money" is true but not really. They could seriously just watch Korean youtube videos (like Korean Unnie or TalkToMeInKorean), get free apps, and write down the alphabet and vocabulary. I can accurately speak that bc I know a good chunk Korean just by using these methods (now I did buy books, but it wasn't that impacting for me)
Jay is so good at interacting with people. That's a really good skill, I know I would get so nervous if I were at his place but he's so good at it. I really hope I can become like him in future.
I really really appreciate you calling us “non Koreans” instead of Foreigners. I hate the word foreigner, it makes me feel like I don’t belong. So for that, Jay, 감사합니다!
Fuk you In the United States, foreigners are a common expression. Koreans suffer more severe physical and linguistic discrimination in another countries, but don't blame that country. If you don't like it Go back to your fuking shithole country.
아리아수 I’ve never said anything negative about korean culture. All my college friends are korean and I love Korea. I don’t understand why you’re so hurt? All I said is it makes me upset when they call me a foreigner. That’s my personal feeling. For example, I never call non Americans foreigners..
I’m learning Korean right now I’m 12 and i learn off UA-cam and shows, I learn to write it by UA-cam and shows, i tell myself I’m only aloud to watch Korean UA-cam videos but i don’t mind cause I like watching them and it challenges me more to speak it better it took me about 4 months and i know more than most adults so if I ever go there it shouldn’t be a problem it’s also really easy for me to speak in Korean cause I know both formally and casual speaking and most adults don’t know that I’m pretty proud of myself on what I’ve accomplished, If you don’t take the time to learn something you won’t be able to learn it
I pay about $57 a month for my Korean course with a native speaker here on the other side of the world, so I doubt that learning Korean in Korea is so expensive that it's not worth learning. These people are lazy, they are going to live in another country and they expect everyone to speak English, they should at least learn basic things like greetings. (Yes, bad English)
That’s true you have to have a passion and drive for it but if you don’t have the money or the time than there’s not much time to really invest in it especially if you know your time there is temporary anyways some people may not think it’s worth the effort. Also $57 a month is not affordable for everyone
Am i the only one who has problems with english teachers who don't know the students native language ? How are they going to teach if they can't explain themselves properly and make sure the students understand...... i've noticed a lot of foreigners who go to korea and japan to teach english but many of them only speak english :/
yellowm She's a teacher in an University and I think Korean students taking classes in English must be good at it OR she's teaching to foreign students. Also in some private languages schools, the teachers absolutely don't have the right to talk to their students in their native language, so that the student will have to progress if he wants to understand better!
yeah maybe not her case but others. I went to an english speaking high school even though it's not my native language and all the english teachers were locals. Science, history etc was taught by people from a number of different nationalities but not english or any of the other languages. The reason being that to fully understand a language and to be able to use it, it had to be explained to us. Now, i might understand if it's university or if it's special language schools. But what i seriously don't understand is why high schoolers or middle schoolers who don't have good english abilities to beging with are presented with someone who doesn't understand their language :I if they really aren't allowed to use the students native language then that's a very weird rule and they should rethink it lol
I know this thread is a month old but, at least in Japan's case, many of the people who go there to teach English take a position as an ALT (assistant language teacher). I know it varies a lot depending on what company you're with, your schools, etc. but typically there's also a Japanese teacher there to talk to the students in Japanese, while the ALT is there to provide things like pronunciation help and conversation practice. I've _heard_ that ALTs in elementary schools are more on their own, but in general, it's not just some dude who can't speak Japanese being tossed in front of a bunch of kids who can't speak English lol. I wouldn't be surprised if the situation in Korea is similar.
I really like the fact that nowadays it's very easy to learn Korean at home, and free. I'm learning Korean for a year, and I'm not very active learning the language, but I can say from the beggining to now I can express myself way more than at that point.
well i saw a comment down below said that "you dont pick up a language" , maybe shes right , only baby or toddler pick up a language . but for me , english isnt my first language and i picked up most of my vocabs , really , for example i never search the meaning of " punish " but i know what it means by the gesture when someone using the word . i think thats the same like when a baby know what "eat" means ,because their mother/father show them the gesture or any clue about the word . but still its better to learn , so we can really be fluent .
I majored in Korean at an university and as we got free education in this country, it was practically free, yay. Now I teach Koreans who want to learn my language but there really isn't that many of them and a lot of them give up after a while because they find it too difficult. I know less than 10 Koreans who actually do know the language (and only 3 of them are fluent). So it's not just foreigners in Korea...pretty sure it's an universal thing around the world.
I’m learning Korean with series and social media. If you really want to learn a language then you just make the time for it. And of course practicing with native speakers is the best way to improve (but I don’t know any korean so... yeah). To all those who are trying, 화이팅 👍
One of the most difficult language, yes agree with that but idk why i still interesting to learn korean language And thank you for the korean subtittle it helps me to learn more sentences 😄

They actually don’t have to pay money? I have never been to korea & I just learned it online & trough kdrama/ kpop.. If you show interest you can learn it everywhere
Hi Jay. I'm from Indonesia. I learning Korean language since 2013 but my Korean skill still not really good. Uh so embarrassing haha. But from your video I can learning 2 languages in once time haha. Thanks Jay. Always waiting your next video ❤❤
It's the simplest thing, but I've never thought about watching what I'm interested in for listening practice. I mean, I do watch some videos that I like, but I don't think of it like that. I think that's gonna make this so much easier. I'll start seeking out material that I enjoy, but just in Korean. I like the question for this video, by the way. Great stuff. Thanks, Jay.
Very nice video👍.. if you want to learn a language you can either one, expose yourself to the language, either by watching videos, or living in the country where that language is used, or two, talk to native speakers or friends who know that language... The more exposed you are to the language, the more your brain will pick up, and you'll kind off go into a "survival" mode lol... At least that was the case for me when I moved to the U.S 🤣😊😄... I am now trying to learn Korean by using free online resources, and watching kdramas, etc... I'm not very good yet, but I'm having fun learning a third language 😄😊❤️
Don't go to Itaewon There are many scumbags in Itaewon that U.S. soldiers and Western men think Korean women are hunted overnight. Sexual assault by foreigners is also the most common place.
I think there are several factors to consider. Every foreigner in a country have different living conditions as well. My mom works in korea for almost 3 years already however she doesn't know how to speak korean since her job definitely takes most of her time that it becomes hard to learn the language in her spare time.
I feel pretty proud for once, I've not went to any Korean classes before nor learn from any apps, instead watching A LOTTTTT of variety shows and ocassionally dramas allowed me to pick up the language, I've been watching Korean stuffs as an hobby(?)/interest almost everyday since like I was 11 and it has been 4 yrs, didn't even know time passes that quickly, and I was able to learn many things, I can now read, speak, understand and a little writting, I wouldn't say I'm very good at the language but I'm confident enough to say I'm able to survive there ;))) Even though, my grades at school fallin like waterfall and getting my ass whoop by my parents for sleeping at 3am, guess I learned a new language without spending tuition fees and that's all that matters right ha-ha .
I learned Korean , well I can say so since I took an official test, because my dream is to work at Samsung in Korea. It started with K-Pop and all but since it overlapped with my STEM studies, I decided to make it into a career plan ♡
I speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. When it comes to Korean, I know how to read Hangul but I don’t always know the meaning of the words, though I can form basic sentences and phrases. I find the pronunciation easy but the grammar hard.
I don't really understand the money point . I have never spent a penny in learning korean . For two years I have struggled by myself and it is doable without going to a language school ! Anyway great content !
The thing is, if you really want to learn the language (and I mean WANT not kind of wish you could speak it) you can do it. Most people are just making excuses not to do the effort needed for it.
it isn’t the hardest language tho... for us speakers mandarin chinese, japanese and korean are considered hard but like for instance, mandarin chinese grammar is easy but writing and reading is hard same with japanese and korean is actually very easy. grammar wise i’d say finnish and french are the hardest languages to learn
I think the best thing you can do in order to learn is getting out of your comfort zone. Of course it's hard and many people hate it -including me-, but I have to admit that I learnt faster that way. If you surround yourself with only native speakers, sooner or later you're going to think 'Oooh snap, I have to survive! I have to get out of this or that situation' and so you will...uh...naturally start to absorbe the language faster? It's part of our survival instinct 😁 I'm not so happy to say that, but some people work better under pressure. At least that's what is happening to me!
It's not expensive, I learned on my own for 8 months while majoring at mechanical engineering (my major requires extreme amount of time to study) and yet I managed to become advanced in Korean.
I've been picking up korean from kdrama and kpop since 2011 but officially tried making time for it since 2012.. 5years later i would say im in between beginner and intermediate:( self study is so hard.
Im Learning korean at Home and when korean customers Come to our Shop i Talk in korean to them. As much as i can. They are very very surprised most Times. I rly Love korean.
I'm learning Korean for about half a year and I'm still not very good at it, because I lack in vocabulary and speaking practice. I understand the grammar really well, because I studied it a lot, but I would love to speak it with an native speaker, so that I can get in touch with the "real" language instead of only the grammar taught in books.
It's not really that hard learning korean and you don't need to give any money if you are willing to.I'm currently learning it and started putting in my mind to learn it fully for a couple of days now and I already know how to read it.The letters are really easy to memorise and play with. Hopefully i'll be able to read it fluently and understand the meanings of paragraphs and books.
한국 친구들이 있으면 말하기 더 배울 수 있는 것같아요. 한국 친구가 있으면 더 배울 것같아요. 거의 1년 됐는데 60% 이해가 가요. { you can make more complex sentences by combining grammar points} 잘 하고있어요^^
im about to take korean lesson class & teach by a korean native. He is a lecturer at 1 of the university at my hometown. bammm suddenly there a registration fee which cost equally as the lesson fee..so now i just learn Hangul tru YT & book.
I really feel like korean is one of the easiest languages, you can pick up the alphabet in a matter of minutes and then it’s just memorising words and making sense of them - I can have decent conversations with a lot of native people, I’m not fluent but I picked it up easily
All those people have the opportunity to live in a foreign country and immerse themselves in the culture and the language which will help them learn it in a quicker pace but they do not take that advantage and keep making excuses and that's really sad tbh. You do not need a lot of money to learn a language especially Korean, there are so many great free online sites that you can use for studying, so many good movies, reality shows, music, youtube videos like this one with korean subs which is super useful, etc. I have been self-studying korean for 3 years and I gotta say that it is not a hard language to learn, the grammar is not that difficult you just need passion and motivation. It's a beautiful language, I can watch reality shows without subtitles and understand what they are talking about and I have spent around 60 euros in total throughout my entire learning journey to come this far. And you do not need a lot of time, even 10-20 minutes each day can make a big difference. I am jealous that these people are in Korea and it should be so much easier for them to learn the language but they are not doing anything about it. I wish I could visit Korea and converse with Koreans and learn more. It's a pity. What they are saying are all excuses :( but still a great video Jay, I always love your content, keep it up! ♡
Hi Jay! Im from Argentina and want to learn Korean! I dont have the money at the moment, so I wanted to ask if by any chance you now online websites where I can learn! Thank you so much for everythin, I love your videos~~ 사랑해요
You don't have to take lots of time or money. You can just study a little bit every day and with internet you can learn basically anything for free. I guess it depends on how much you really want to learn.
i think many foreigners in korea speaks the language really well.. specialy university students and foreign workers. i kinda disagree with them korean language is easy to learn u must have the eagerness and courage to learn it..
korean is one of the easier foreign languages tbh. all there really is to it is lot of vocabulary. if you speak a non-english language (spanish for instance) word structure and pronunciation come easy !~
Its not expensive. You can learn a language for free if you put the effort in. You live in the country. You're surrounded by people speaking Korean so for the person that said there isnt many chances to use it is just not trying hard enough.
Everyone says immersion is the best way to learn but the key is to actually be immersed. Foreigners in any country are prone to living "a bubble life" if they're not actively trying to learn.

JAY U LOOK HANDSOME IN THAT STRIPES ㅠㅠ
I dont think korean is difficult. Not more than chinese and japanese. (I learned it so I know what Im talking about)
I hunk the judgement from both of y’all is harsh considering she was trying to be real and open about he limitations
yuna 75 I don't care for excuses. If someone wants to learn something they'll do it
tbh she is already learning Portuguese and just switching over to learn korean kind of sounds like a waste. if she really wanted to and will risk that then yea she should, but it’s not really easy learning languages so it would be good if she could learn korean after she learns Portuguese
but she said those exact words
"I work at a university but when there's holidays I travel, if I really wanted to learn I'd just stay here and learn it"

I wish I could type all if this in Korean, but my level of writing isn't advanced enough for it.
but why are you all using banmal??
I took lessons in Korean Culture Center in Turkey and I think Korean Language is really easy to learn, it is similar to Turkish language just letters are different. These languages from same language family. I like that video, actually I like all of your videos, I hope you get what you deserve! :) We love you Jay! I hope one day I come to Korea (probably when I join university I will come to Korea)
Gizem grammer is similar in Turkish, Korean and Japanese, so it could be easy for you to learn it!
Natasa Ma exactly but if a foreign wants to learn them whoever is Turkish or from another country he or she should love to learn them because it can be hard if don't love learning languages hehehee
Gizem I've been kinda learning Turkish tru dramas and I find it so intresting!
Aiden Think So
LMAO😂😂😂
Aiden Think So i hope can go to korea too
I think also it may take time since in Busan they have 사투리 (satoori) which is a dialect and even my friend who is Korean says they can’t understand them😂
You don't need money in my opinion.

It's actually sad when people don't learn the language of the country they live in
cust0mx Agreed
cust0mx yeah I happens sometimes in the states as well vice versa which is pretty sad, if you learn just 1 sentence a day and know how to use it, one day you gonna find yourself good in the language

Third World waste does't have the right to point out Korean culture. Don't be rude. It's really piss off.
아리아수 I’ve never said anything negative about korean culture. All my college friends are korean and I love Korea. I don’t understand why you’re so hurt? All I said is it makes me upset when they call me a foreigner. That’s my personal feeling.
For example, I never call non Americans foreigners..
아리아수 America isn’t a 3rd world country...

I’m learning Korean right now I’m 12 and i learn off UA-cam and shows, I learn to write it by UA-cam and shows, i tell myself I’m only aloud to watch Korean UA-cam videos but i don’t mind cause I like watching them and it challenges me more to speak it better it took me about 4 months and i know more than most adults so if I ever go there it shouldn’t be a problem it’s also really easy for me to speak in Korean cause I know both formally and casual speaking and most adults don’t know that I’m pretty proud of myself on what I’ve accomplished, If you don’t take the time to learn something you won’t be able to learn it
That's honestly great, especially at a young age! We don't need a lot of money to learn...
I have paid about $400 a month for English.

Jay you look handsome 💕
Also there are free Korean lessons in the Global Culture Center!

요즘 제키님 영상 먆이 올라와서 행복해요💕 앞으로도 많이 봐요!🤗
One of the most difficult language, yes agree with that but idk why i still interesting to learn korean language
And thank you for the korean subtittle it helps me to learn more sentences 😄

I'm learning english wff your videos thxx Jay!!
I'm not very good yet, but I'm having fun learning a third language 😄😊❤️
i love his videos

Don't go to Itaewon There are many scumbags in Itaewon that U.S. soldiers and Western men think Korean women are hunted overnight. Sexual assault by foreigners is also the most common place.
I think there are several factors to consider. Every foreigner in a country have different living conditions as well. My mom works in korea for almost 3 years already however she doesn't know how to speak korean since her job definitely takes most of her time that it becomes hard to learn the language in her spare time.
If you live in Korea, learn Korean:-(
When we go to your country and speak Korean, you don't like it and you don't help it very well.
YOU JAYKEEOUT ARE WONDERFULL, NICE.
I found out Cake just like few days ago, and now Jay is mention it😂
I speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. When it comes to Korean, I know how to read Hangul but I don’t always know the meaning of the words, though I can form basic sentences and phrases. I find the pronunciation easy but the grammar hard.
Great video! I really enjoyed it~
I don't really understand the money point . I have never spent a penny in learning korean . For two years I have struggled by myself and it is doable without going to a language school !
Anyway great content !
i'm learning korean so far the word meanings are easier to learn but the Grammer its screwing up with my brain
The thing is, if you really want to learn the language (and I mean WANT not kind of wish you could speak it) you can do it. Most people are just making excuses not to do the effort needed for it.
Why is that title like a Tongue Twister? Hahaha... anyways, a great Video as always!! 💫
it isn’t the hardest language tho... for us speakers mandarin chinese, japanese and korean are considered hard but like for instance, mandarin chinese grammar is easy but writing and reading is hard same with japanese and korean is actually very easy. grammar wise i’d say finnish and french are the hardest languages to learn
Out of curioisity, have you ever encountered any Asian foreigners in Korea that weren't so good in Korean?
I went to korea and I only know the basics so i tryed using the basics threw out my trip 😁💙

Since I’m korean, some of my relatives don’t know any English so it’s really hard for me to communicate. Especially since I’m horrible at it.
Love your videos
korean is one of the easier foreign languages tbh. all there really is to it is lot of vocabulary. if you speak a non-english language (spanish for instance) word structure and pronunciation come easy !~
좋은 주제❤❤
Its not expensive. You can learn a language for free if you put the effort in. You live in the country. You're surrounded by people speaking Korean so for the person that said there isnt many chances to use it is just not trying hard enough.
Your videos are so interesting to watch
