WD S i think you can gain a lot of things, you get out of your confort zone for certain situations, you socialise more, you learn more about different cultures (from the artist and the other fans you interact with), it can give you hope, and as people said, it helps with stress a lot, and in my personal case, it literally saved my life, so... 🤷🏽♀️

As a black man that lived in Korea for two years, I had experienced discrimination while I was there. However, I also made many Korean friends that where very friendly and welcoming.

Korea is the only country I felt like I'm unwelcome there when I went on a vacation. Almost everybody glanced at me with weird looks and insulting faces just because I was a little darker compared to them. A group of korean people started snickering and bickering to something I don't really understand while looking at me. When I begged their pardon they just went away without saying anything so I asked my friend who can understand Korean what they were talking about. He was slightly hesitant but told me they were laughing at me saying I was darker...

Korean women openly say they are much more beautiful than the rest of Asian women like Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese. Or Filipino women. What is worse is that they blatantly say South east Asian women have “inferior” appearance and physical traits to them at the genetic level and they often publicly express this opinion without shame. Sometimes they insist they are better looking than some of top western models or Hollywood stars in general, saying western women have ugly freckles and wrinkles too early for their age and generally just grow older much faster than Korean women, which makes them by far the best looking women in the world.
I find it hard to stand their overall arrogant mindset because they are saying all those disgusting things with non other than their own mouth, as if their magical plastic surgeons and beauty products were not giving them a huge favor over the others. According to international society of aesthetic plastic surgeons (ISAPS) Koreans get 13.3 ps in a year per 1000 people (but men only account for less than 8 percent of those numbers), one in five women aged 19-49 living in cities reported to have gone under the knife and the vast majority of them had double-eyelid surgeries. (Economist).
TL;DR : Korean women are bunch of molly coddled entitled twits who think they have far superior appearance than the rest of the world.
I am Southeast Asian. Filipino in particular. I am far from being uneducated and a lot of my countrymen are too. Although unfortunate, a lot of Filipino's however are not that blessed in life. They live in poverty. A lot makes sacrifices to be away from their families and go to different countries to earn money. They work as house helpers, factory workers, hotel employees, nurses, etc. It's sad to know that the foreigners they serve look down upon them. But we in our country, we consider them modern-day heroes. Salute to all Overseas Filipino Workers!

Totally agree with you. I thought at first that her comment would go the other way, that she'd say that because of their background SE Asians in Korea usually work hard to get a better life for themselves and their family, and that she respects that. But instead she got snobbish and talked about their education level as if that's a reason to be weary of them. As if she even would have better manners than them because of her education, when she admits to not wanting to sit next to people on public transports - which is extremely rude. Smh.

Koreans and Japanese take very good care of themselves. I live in The States, and would see people come to morning classes at my college in pajamas or walking around during the day, in pajamas. Almost everyone here on the street in South Korea from observing the background, both men and women are well groomed and neatly dressed

Korea especially tale care of their fashion. A lot of fashion trends started in Korea which people dont really know about. And also through Kpop and Kdrama, the fashion gets even more sophisticated

I'm half black and studied in korea @ yonsei university for a few months (I actually recognize the area they filmed at haha), but rarely experienced any discrimination
even on the subway, no one would ever avoid sitting next to me just because my skin color is darker. occasionally, even elders would talk to me and ask me about what I was up to that day!
there were a couple of unpleasant instances that I could recall (usually being denied from clubs that don't allow foreigners to enter), but everyone was very friendly to me for the most part!
same here even tho i only visited for 2 weeks. the elders were very nice and curious, only got turned down by octagon club
ploxyzero i was an indian visiting and everyone was really nice. if there was one specific uncomfortable experience, it should be getting stopped st the airport because my dad, sister and i are dark-skinned....we had to wait for a long time to be cleared. On the other hand, my mom was immediately cleared. She was fair.
Adi that’s actually terrible... extremely colorist and happening at a huge public airport of a major developed modern country. we have a lot of work to do

I think she meant by she probably heard it from ppl that they dont tend to sit beside ppl who are dark skinned. Older generation ppl feel like they look dirty so they dont sit beside them in trains or buses.

Nothing wrong with having a preference for your own people (or similar looking). Wouldn't call that discrimination, it would be another story if they were only allowed to sit in the back of the bus or would be dismissed if they wanted to sit besides someone because of their appearance.

Wow some of them are so judgmental with South east asian people. As a SEA people, i found it pretty offensive. I’m sorry but some of them are just being offensive to SEA people.And to that lady who wore pink jacket and blue shirt, i’m pretty sure myself people from my country are well mannered. Because i believe every country, every individual defines “manners” differently. It based on how open minded we are about others culture. You can’t expect foreigners to suddenly act like they’ve been living in korea since they’re 5 or something. As the matter of fact, in my country, we appreciate differences and whenever there are exchange students from any other countries (including korean itself) we tried to make them feel as comfortable as possible instead of avoiding them. I’m sorry but i found that lady words really irritating and ignorant.

@@danroycabat8451 Teachers hold a lot of influence in shaping an entire generation and freeing students from ignorance by educating them. Their words have equal weight as parents' do. The "fake" that you mentioned can only be eradicated by teachers being their window to the world and teaching them to question what they've been conditioned to believe.
I'm from South East Asia, to be exact, from Brunei, I've been to Korea, and even have alot of Korean friends....I do understand the Korean stereotype about SEA labour workers or expats, as many of them do travel in search of money, and some, if not most, have a tendancy to do what the local people dislike, even here in my country, and because of that, it is enough to make certain stereotypes..it might be normal for you in your country, but in other countries, many people don't like it..

Listen, I'm married to a Korean and have lived there too. Most Koreans I know were very open mind and do not have this type of thinking at all. I know some part of the population discriminate against SEA, Chinese, LGBT,...etc but I think this is due belief conditioning, the news, lack of exposure or debate,...etc I don't think there is more racism/discrimination compare to other countries in the world. This a world issue which can slowly be fixed by confronting one another, breaking stereotypes, teaching, debating,...etc
2 side notes:
1- It is (unfortunately) a human being thing to do to others what others did/are doing to you. For ex, Thailand is now a relatively rich country in SEA and SOME Thais (see, no generalisation here 😉) are discriminating against their poorer neighbours
2- I actually found out that when confronted on "Hot Topics", Koreans are actually quite receptive and willing to debate. It happened more than once that when telling them "Imagine if a Caucasian said what you just told me... They would be called Racist straight away" and they would reply "Ooo I didn't think about it this way. I didn't mean like that. I need to be careful". See, they didn't even realise it. It's all about perception and engaging conversation.

As a southeast asian, I feel bad about the last question. And how others described those people as “uneducated”. Yes, they maybe poor and did not finished their studies, but they are also people who have feelings and manners. I think they are just unaware of Korean “ways of life”.
South Koreans aren't usually racist to SE Asians... What the girl is saying is they tend to not interact with each other. For example many work in the factories south of seoul and when they ride the subways they always stick together in big groups and often talk loudly on the subway, or they are standing in the train in weird spots (hard to explain but there is a kind of subway culture about how to stand and sit). Koreans tend to be quite quiet on the subway and stand a certain way. The translation in the video is also simplified, i think she just means “less educated” so they are doing physical labor, instead of working in seoul.
What I can really say is that the interview is 100% biased and liar
Anyone near me neverthought like her the true image of southeastern people are so hard working, polite and friendly they really like them. You can trust me:)
As a South Korean who lived in Philippines for almost the entirety of my school life, I completely agree with your viewpoint. However, there is no need to be offended since most of Koreans are ‘uneducated ‘ in their own ways. They are merely not exposed to western perspectives for their whole life.
Keithdadipanda in Korea, there are tons of illegal immigrants from South Asia and China. they have committed crimes a lot such as rape, rob, even murder. a couple of days ago, one guy from Sri Lanka was accused of burning an oil tank. S.Korea is one of safest countries over the world. this is why any crime done by foreigner can be easily remember and finally stereotyped. do not just look at the consequences, but better think about the process and the causes of those stereotypes.

I’m from malaysia. And I’m proud to say that I’m blessed to have a good education. And I have a lot of friends and teachers that from different races. Malay,Chinese and Indian. We all help each other. We always compliment each other. When there is any celebration like eid, Chinese New Year or deepavali. Malay will wear cheongsam or sari. Chinese will wear Malay traditional clothes or sari and Indian will wear Malay traditional clothes or cheongsam. We choose to wear it because we respect our friends culture even tho all of us from different races. I have a poor friend and I will help her with any help. My Chinese friend will help me in my studies since they good at that. My indian friends always share their food with me. That’s why I will never talk bad about China and India. Because I KNOW THEM. And it’s just sad that they said we are poor and not given proper education but they don’t even know us. Once, I met this korean she/he said that the China,Korea and Japan is the best in Asia just because the western know them the most.

Do you really think so? A lot of it is based of self security in my opinion, imagine not having a single stereotype then both you and me would probably been both robbed and beaten up by now. UNLEASHING POTENTIAL - PSYCHOLOGY VIDEOS No it would not we kind of need those despite how bad they are most of the time. For example, when I went to the border of US/Canada to see BTS in Canada, I was told that because we are white and female we must be innocent people. I have watched other vdoz of Asian boss abt plastic surgery and all in Korea and almost everyone said that it's actually almost correct. Koreans mostly prefer appearance. Even in interviews too if two candidates r equally intelligent but one is prettier then they will choose prettier one
Its interesting that east-Asians don't consider keeping a distance or avoiding someone of different ethnicity a form of "discrimination". I think in both SK and Japan there is this mindset that racism/discrimination must involve some kind of ill intent, harsh language or violence. Its frustrating how some people from these countries will actively avoid you so that they avoid a awkward situation (or so they think) and leaves a bitter taste in the recipients mouth.
Situations where this came up were when I was in Busan, SK at a fish market/restaurant district and the person behind the stall basically hid from view soon as I got close but immediately reappeared when I moved away. In Odaiba, Japan I was visiting the Gundam store and at the entrance a girl was giving out some freebies with some tissue pack and she would approach the customers entering and hand these things out. Miraculously when I entered or left the establishment she didn't take a single step toward me but continued to hand these things out to other guests.
These things are not the end of the world type of situations and to some extent I understand they maybe don't feel confident in interacting with foreigners/don't want to cause confusion etc but its a little depressing, especially when you consider I speak the language...

Its a discriminatory behavior based on racial profiling, it may not have ill intent such as "I'm not going to serve this foreigner/this guy doesn't get anything because he's a foreigner" but their fear of interacting has caused a divide purely on exterior appearance and assumes the other person can't understand the culture and language. The Western equivalent would be charity worker on the street raising money actively avoiding people of color because he/she feels they are less likely to contribute to charity financially.
I understand Japan (SK less so) is a conflict avoidance society and that does sometimes manifest itself in the form of 'avoiding' potential trouble but approaching someone with tissue packs or serving a customer at your own booth I would hardly describe as a conflict. Their job IS to interact with the unfamiliar which is why their actions are more puzzling.

Well to be fair I called it discrimination (which it is) and I have no recollection of screaming racism in my original post. They altered their behavior according to the exterior appearance and ethnicity of the recipient, that is a dictionary definition of discriminatory behavior. Like I stated in my op, I understand that it is a form of conflict avoidance and they mean no ill intent but the result is basically the same. Arguing the semantics of discriminatory/racist behavior whilst the resultant action is the same between the racist vs the non-racist speaks volumes.
Colorism is an unfortunate problem in this world and Korea is no different. I'm korean and my dad and all his brothers are very dark. They're literally darker than all my Thai, FIlipino, and Cambodian friends. They've experienced negativity themselves as Koreans. They came from a different time when Korea suffered from extreme poverty in the 50s-70s when it was one of the poorest countries in the world. My father hated his dark skin especially when he was around lighter skinned Koreans in the capital. Darker skin always has been linked to uneducated, poverty, rural countryside, etc. and it's assumed they do a lot of outside labor work making their skin darker in the sun. Unfortunately it was true for my dad and his family. Korea developed extremely quickly in a few decades with the help of America and now this divide and these classist concepts are embedded much more. One of the poorest countries that was stepped all over by its neighbors quickly became one of the most prosperous in the world and there are a lot of Koreans that get way too proud about this. And the idea of dark skin from developing countries is still gonna be there. But this is not exclusive to Korea. It's a common issue whenever a country rises which leads them to feel superior than their neighbors who have not developed as far as they did. I have tons of close Thai friends and I noticed Thailand have been improving on a lot of things over time in SE Asia. They tell me they look down on their neighbors, Myanmar and Cambodia, who are considered to be inferior and much poorer than them. I live in America and I think a lot of Americans look down on the entire world lol. It's just a cycle of nonsense. Another thing is what's even worse is the view of black people globally. I've talked with people from different parts of the world and sadly everybody looks at black people the same way. I also come across Africans who tell me they look down on black people in America. At the end of the day I think the root problem is how images of African Americans have been distributed and fed to the entire world by Western media for many decades. These kind of problems are not being talked about in a lot of countries since circumstances are very different like in America where I grew up and it just doesn't get brought up. America was built on racism, discrimination, hate, etc. and these ideas are being put out and influencing pretty much every country. These kinds of discussions need to be happening in other countries because people are being brainwashed and they don't even know it.

I'm student who's been living in Korea for 8 years and I'm from Indonesia (one of Southeast Asian country). Personally, I've never experienced discrimination directly from Koreans, probably because I speak the language. Several times I got mistreated as Chinese (because I'm half Chinese) maybe due to my appearance, but that doesn't affect me much. Regarding the last question about Southeast Asian countries stereotypes, I've heard the same comments myself from my Korean friends outside the school and most of them are generalizing that all Southeast Asian are same: poor and uneducated. I think that this is ignorance, similar comment that comes from that long hair lady with pink dress holding notebook. I've encountered several Korean like this lady during my stay in Korea, and most of the time we never get along and our friendship never works because, yes literally, they often keep the distance from me. It ends up they are being the lonely ones. But most of Koreans I know (i.e., my friends, colleague, academics, and Professor) are nice^^.

I'm black and I visited Korea for 2 weeks this past summer and I never really experienced discrimination but there was a lot of staring (a few people even touched my hair without asking lmao). I wasn't too bothered by it because I know Korea is a pretty homogenous country and people were probably just curious, but it was a little uncomfortable when people would continue to stare even after you made eye contact with them.

When I see their mentality towards people of a different culture, I don't feel angry, but rather pity them. When you're bigotted and tend to avoid a representative of an entire culture/country, you're only depriving yourself of the incredible experience of knowing a different often more vibrant community than yours.

I am southeast asian...and I definitely don't have a "foreign" parent...but for some reason I get offended when people say I don't look like a southeast asian because I am white. Not all SE Asians have dark skin tbh...maybe 50% of us are light skinned even koreans who come to our country to study (most actually) have the same skin tone as us...so I think it is a stereotype about SE Asians that also should be debunked. Also SE Asians might come from 3rd world countries but most of us are definitely educated. but I love how koreans are definitely honest they don't try to be polite or amicable with their opinions they say what they mean...even if some gets offended and TBH I really like that.

I have had encounters with some people who don't like foreigners much less dark skinned ppl like myself. But honestly I get that same BS in the states too but the difference is I never fear for my life in korea

I’m Filipino, and when I went to Korea for the first time and was introduced by our friends with their Korean guy friends, they said that they didn’t expect Filipinos to look like us (because we have light skin and that we look “pretty”).

Korea is still a largely homogenous nation that holds strong pride for its country, so probably majority of their unconscious xenophobic views on ethnicities with darker skin colour stem from that. It's a sad reality, but I do know that the generation now are a little more open-minded than their parents'. It's unfortunate though that this issue towards darker people still goes unnoticed most of the time (often when you watch korean shows, there's still some stigma that dark skin is ugly), and I hope that one day they can also see the beauty in a tan, chocolate, or whatever skin colour is out there. 😁
I still think Korea is a beautiful country, and this interview, in no way shape or form, has changed the fact that I still want to visit it someday (despite being a southeast asian myself). Let's stan a generation that embraces every culture, y'all. It's 2018

I've lived in Canada and parts of Europe for many years and I can say with confidence white people really have no large monolithic culture so what's really there to be proud of? They have technology and knowledge but where is the cultivation and practice of culture. There is nothing intricate about it if there is some. I can understand why from this that there are so many communists and lefties in Europe. Because they really have nothing to lose and this is where I can agree with left wing individuals, that whites really don't have culture.
Lefties can masquerade their true intent with all the left wing verbatim you want like equality, human rights, etc. but it won't change anything.
By today's standards I will come off as racist but I don't care. Asian culture is too beautiful to let it die and being "homogeneous" is a part of the beauty. Everywhere you go feels like home and there is hardly and tension or crime.
In Korea we call people brothers and sisters even if we are not blood related, this is the result of a homogeneous culture. Beautiful am I right?
If you take a look, both the left and right are super nationalistic in Korea. That really says something doesn't it? To summarize it as "woeful ignorance" is a case of intellectual dishonesty. It is if you look at it from such a biased and ethno-centric point of view but you have to also look at it from the perspective of people like us that have been born and raised in this country.

I meet a Korean girl few months ago on IG (She lives in US now) she told me that people used to discriminate her in Korea because she speaks Fluent English...

as always, brown/black skin people will be discriminated and viewed as "gross", while white skin people will be glorified by most Koreans. I've seen many Indian people got unfair racism in Korea for just asking place address. Also isn't it the backwards? The older generation (Gen X) usually treat darker skins people better than younger gen, coz there's a crazy absurd beauty standard in Korea mainly in younger gen. Seeing darker skin people, and they'll step aside to ignore.
Really, my gf went there for Exchange students in Busan national Univ , I think just becoz she is a girl & fair skinned , she haven't face racism yet I guess..

Some Korean people just believe in physical appearence, that's to say they don't want to overcome to stereotypes about foreigners. Just saying.

Korea has a history of prejudice against those who are darker in skin color. white, fair skinned meant you are in the upper class, who did not have to do field or farm work. And add another layer of cultural prejudice if that dark-skinned individual is from a different country. Despite the on-going racism, there are those in business, entertainment industry that is creating some changes in attitudes and beliefs.
Some of the nicest people I have come across in Seoul were the elderly. The middle aged and young adults were not very bright and the children were just adorable.
I don't think i should visit Korea based on these responses.

Being a tourist is fine, its when you plan on staying you'll have a problem. My gf, who's from Zimbabwe, loved it there and plans to go back next month.
I'm Black and don't want to have to feel "ON" when i am vacationing somewhere. I just feel like if i went there i wouldn't be able to relax because i feel like people would expecting me to do something as i walked around.

ZenGaijin go. I went twice and the thing that made me feel sad is that besides the elderly and the little kids people my age and a bit younger were just weird acting and unfriendly. There is a lot of "white identifying". Yet so much historical culture as well as very good food.

I'm Indonesian n wearing hijab, i visited korea once in 2017, i was so nervous at first because i had heard so many stereotypes like this so i prepared my heart to any mistreat that might happen, but what i experienced was quite the opposite, i was so surprised that i met some of the kindest people in life, i didn't get any deep stare, otherwise they really want to make sure that i reached to my destination once i asked them how to get to one place, the old man i saw in the train offered me his assistance to bring my goodies as he saw me exhausted bringing so many staffs n many more nice stories, what wonderful people, some people say that its because i was in Seoul, people are more open minded, its gonna be a different story if i were in another city but a friend of mine visited korea recently n she had a bit of unpleasant experience, i don't know if i was being lucky, i still have no idea.

Korea is so competitive that looks really matter. Everyone in highschool study from early mornings to late nights to get into the University they want. So many people are smart so employers choose based on another category: looks.
This is the reason why Korea has one of the highest suicide rates out of developed nations.

as a Korean , i totally disagree with those interviewees. we don't think bad or poor about SE asians at all! but some guys think that SE asia womans are easy to flirt with. but that doesn't mean that we think poor about SE asians. why did they say like that? i think that they just wanna make another stereotype in favor of korean. for instance, i eat kimchi everyday cause if you have meal in public place, kimchi is always served as a side menu so it is hardly possible not to eat kimchi everyday. and almost every Korean hate Japanese. vice versa either. if you are korean, and say that i really like japanese in public place , people will make some distance between him or talk bad about him or her that he has no knowlege on history or maybe his ancestor was a pro-Japanese. so don't trust those few interviewees . that doesn't represent Korea at all
