This was back in 1991 right after the Berlin Wall came down and was the first concert allowed in that area of the world. The army was there in a security capacity but got in a lot of trouble for partying and not doing there job. The helicopters seen in the video were there actually misting was on the crowd because it was like 110 or 115 degrees and a lot of people were collapsing due to heat exhaustion. Definitely a concert that will never duplicated🖤🤘
Lex had a great question that's never been answered which is, How many people died? It's a Million and a half people. Definitely a couple people died, but it's Metallica. If they achieved 5-7 times more record sales of each record the band release throughout their career they would LITERALLY BE Dethklok now. Governments would change because they wrote a song about, I don't know... Duncan Hills Coffee.
Thank you for the info I was already wondering how in the world was there a concert with 1.6 million people attending. I was born in 91 and had a bit different taste in music so I didn't know all of this.
@@MattyDready that I know, I don't like most of the new stuff even from older artists I prefer the older songs and every day I learn about a new song and get to experience it for the first time and I like it.
I saw this concert at The Great Western Forum in Los Angeles in January of 1992. An average concert is around an hour and a half.... Metallica played, with no opening act, for nearly four straight hours with not one, not TWO, but THREE encores.. It was one of the most metal experiences of my life.
Modern narcissistic psychology is making people want to date mirrors and not be challenged, but sadly it just doesn't work, you need someone to challenge you and balance you out
@Tony that is a really interesting point. I (Lex) always felt that way, like i was drawn to my complete opposite. Just so much more growth potential if you can get past the monumental differences 😂🔥👊🏽

Hey guys. I was born in Moscow in 1980. And i remember this event so well! That was a history. The history of music and brotherhood! I’ve lost my friend. Police was so aggressive…However, we were aggressive too…It was a revolution. Braking the wall! And rock’ roll forever!!! That was epic…
Don’t worry Lex, the entire world will never see a concert like this again. This was a once in a lifetime show. Nowadays, you have to go to Brazil or Japan for 300,000+ people at a metal concert
I feel like 300,000+ in Japan is still a stretch. Don't get me wrong, bands like BABYMETAL and Band-Maid, as well as others have made huge strides in bringing metal back in Japan, but it's still miniscule compared to the J-Pop/Idol system of music there that just keeps churning out artists/groups disposably for consumption. It is on an upwards trend for metal there, though. At the same time I have to remember that BABYMETAL sold out the Tokyo Dome (55,000 seats) two nights in a row back in like 2016/2017, but I wonder how many people were there both nights since they ran through their entire song catalogue for those concerts.

well theres a very good reason for so many soviet citizens being present still, as a testament to Metallica's popularity; anywhere they go there is never enough space because they are one of the very few artists in the world that would perform a concert almost anywhere in the world and still literally have millions of people show up if tickets availability was unlimited this was true then and is still true today
I’m 55, I saw Metallica many times back in the day. The energy they bring infuses into the crowd like nothing else. It’s impossible not to bang your head, jump up and down, swing your hair, and scream!!!!!
The history involved with this show was intense. The iron curtain had just fallen and the Berlin wall just came down. This was the first time western metal had played in the USSR. These fans were finally free for the first time 🤯
wasnt there a concert before this one put on by doc mcgee...had pantera, motley crue, bon jovi, cinderella and the scorpions? Moscow Peace festival i think it was called?
I am Russian, what do you call freedom ??? after the collapse of the USSR, plants and factories all over the country began to be closed, unemployment and famine set in. People died as during the war against the German fascists, I will remind you that 39 million people died. and this is in "peaceful", as you say "free" time. The country defaulted, the money depreciated and the crisis came. Western and Chinese consumer goods poured into Russia, as well as drugs, the population was drunk and everyone died from low-quality alcohol and drugs. the streets were filled with homeless people and street children, the country had large debts and came under external control. Is that what you call freedom? Thank God that the terrible 90s are over and Russia has begun to revive. The collapse of the USSR is a tragedy for the entire people of Russia.
Actually there was the Moscow Music Peace festival prior to this in 1989. And the Scorpions who played western hard rock but are from Germany did few shows in Russia prior to that. Scorpions are big in Russia.
When I was 14, my brother (17) took me to see Ozzy in Houston in '86. Metallica opened, (Master of Puppets/"Damage Inc. tour") and it changed my life. The whole way home, my brother just kept repeating: "That shit is next level. OMG." We bonded bigtime. i don't see him much these days, but when we do get a chance to chat, it always leads back to Cliff and how lucky we were to see him.
That is pretty cool my older brother who is 6 years older took me and my best friend at the time to Metallica on the And Justice For All tour in 1989 when I was 12 years old The Cult was the opening band.
Saw the Same tour in Denver when I was 16. (same thing... changed my life musically, being able to say I saw Cliff Burton play live. It's something I'll never forget!)
I have an old pic. of me wearing that Ultimate Sin tour jersey. I remember Cliff doing the head whirl and wondering how the hell he could play so fast on a bass.
Took my son to see them in Rome, Italia for his 16th. It was wall to wall. Great time. They perform solid; no bs; they take their performances seriously.
This was a time when in Russia you didn’t get to see these bands, it was a amazing moment in time. Nobody wanted to miss this opportunity And I also was impressed by the balls it takes to play in this arena. This is not normal, it is amazing 🤩
Seen Metallica 8 times, they never disappoint, even last year, and they are pushing the age of 60. Main difference to me concert wise is the price, last year the price for a floor pass was a least $1,000. In the late 80’s early 90’s it was a general admission ticket, 25-35 bucks, and you could push and claw your way to the stage or go sit up in the stands. Never thought I’d be saying, oh man, the good old days.
I paid $36 for a pair of tickets to see Pantera and Typo Negative in 94. Sunken Gardens in San Antonio, TX. $70 for a pair of Metallica, Fight and Suicidal Tendencies.
There’s nothing like the thumping beat of the music pounding through every ounce of your body at a true rock concert, especially when the band starts playing your favorite song and everyone knows the words for a massive sing along. The energy is incredible!

Many ppl will say their gen is best….but the truth is….the 80s, were a different era, a different feel. The electricity, the happiness, the friendships, the music. It was love in its purest form.
I think up to the 1950's the main recording process was to just put the entire band in the studio and do it as if it was live. Editing was much limited and ammounted to basically changing equalization switches.
What brought a tear to my eye? The fact that the intro was from the soundtrack of the movie "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly" first album my Dad ever gave me. Metallicas influences/inspirations are endless. Sniff... :)

If you didn't grow up in this time period (I was in High School when this concert happened) it can be difficult to understand what this, the crowd's energy and size was all about. This was the Monsters of Rock concert that was organized after the fall of the Berlin wall, and collapse of the Soviet Union. Western albums for these groups had been black market for decades and the people of the former Soviet Union finally saw that change. It was a crazy period of hope after what we thought was the end of the cold war, and this was just one of those iconic moments of the energy of that period. Again, it is just hard to understand unless you were around in the time period before and during all these events. It was an amazing period at that time. Sadly, I rarely see reactions to this video/concert, that even mention what exactly led to this moment/concert but it is important to have that context to truly appreciate it.
Metal to this day still the best in the music industry no other genre comes close. You got bands like Unleash the Archers who are putting out incredible music.

This was a "Monsters Of Rock" all-day concert. It was free to attend the show, hence the very-large crowd at an air force base outside Moscow. Metallica appeared early in the day. AC/DC was the headlining act at the end of the night (their music was banned in the USSR for many years).

There was socialism in the USSR, communism has never existed anywhere. Thanks to the desire for communism, the workers received an 8-hour working day, free education, housing, affordable work, and many other social assistance from the state, also Metallica concert in this video was free, that is why there are so many people.. Albeit at the cost of unsuccessful decisions that led to hunger, or unnecessary repression, all of which is maximally exaggerated by Western propaganda during the Cold War. Well, you are degenerates, brainwashed from this very propaganda, can't even imagine how many people suffer from capitalism, for example, simply taking loans for tuition fees for which they then pay for their whole life like slaves. And these are examples you should be familiar with, but about those countries where capital creates cheap labor and brazenly takes their resources, I will just mention it because you are clearly used to not noticing it. Medicine even in modern Russia is free, as a gift from the socialist past, albeit terrible, because Russia is now a corrupt capitalist dump. I feel like 300,000+ in Japan is still a stretch.

The funny part here is that it wasn't even an Arena, it was an airfield lol!!!
That’s so crazy! Born 94 so not as old buy I feel the change so drastic, the times before so much technology was something else

It was for a long time until a concert in Rio on NYE 2016 had 3.6 million. I think it was Rod Stewart???? But this was pretty revolutionary :)
I had an older Russian friend, and he said back then, the cops would jam on the breaks, get out, and beat you into a pulp because you had long hair and a Metallica shirt. So he came to USA, and was disappointed in our waning metal scene, lol. Boris was legendary.
Your comment immediately made me think of this: Olaf... Metal! lol.

I'm So happy you noticed the Coolness of Hetfield and his Power Stance
I love Lex's reaction. They definitely are the epitome of rock stars!! and their stage energy and presence is off the charts.

So true how you guys feel

Metallica we’re one of the first big bands to play in Russia after fall of communism.. hence the crowd & hype
Agree with the comment in 1991…unfortunately communism is still alive and torturing innocent people daily…and coming closer to 2021 America daily. Regardless, amazing song and performance.
Communism hadn't fallen yet
wasnt only Metallica playing there, AC/DC,The Black Crowes, Pantera, and E.S.T
And I'm not even a communist, I'm just tired of seeing this nonsense from Westerners who don't know a damn what they're talking about

I've seen Metallica live 12 times... It's awesome live.
Still worth it now ? Because I’m new to it and I’m love with a few tracks
@@kingofthepond6612 I'd say absolutely
Lex: "This was before I was born"
Me: "Wow, I feel old"
Same..
I know!!!!
Right!
I AM old, 70 and counting. Love LOVE Metallica.
@@virginiawaters955 My Mom is 73 and also loves Metallica (a friend of mine introduced her and my Dad to their music in the late 1980s and they've both loved them since!) I was raised on Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Elton John, Procal Harem, etc.... And the list goes on - so my friend and I knew they'd love Metallica.
The Historical significance of this concert cant be overstated. This was the first American Metal Tour through the Former Soviet Union. The Cold War was ending.. There had just been a failed Putsch in September.. The Berlin wall had come down and this crowd of former Soviet Citizens... was waving the American Flag rocking out to quintessential American Music.
It was Awesome.
It wasn't the former Soviet Union. The concert was September 28 1991. The Soviet Union fell December 8, 1991
@@ikeknightsnevertheless it was the time of significant changes in my country and western metal groups performance like that is the sign of that era.
You know at that time there was more hope for a better life than now.
And it’s all gone now.
@ikeknights it fell before that date. Just the date put on paper.
Music and the arts is where we all connect. It can bring us together which is what we need today.
Lex exudes pure musical joy! Makes me enjoy this band even more!
Yes, I get the same feeling.
The late 80’s and 90’s was the pinnacle of rock concerts and rock music in general. Everything was epic back then.
The early 80's definitely had some major Epic factor!.. Sabbath - Born Again '82, Priest - Screaming for Vengeance '82, Motley Crue shout at the devil opened for Ozzy Bark at the Moon '83, Van Halen - 1984 at The Garden was so sick! Maiden - the Powerslave tour '85.. It was a little before my time for going to concerts, but the entire decade of the '70s may very well have contained The Epitome Of Rock-n-Roll Epicness!
Ever heard of Woodstock? That's where it all started.
@@randerson7761 You must be on what they were back then.
Music peaked with 80’s/90’s rock/metal. We live in a musical wasteland now
@@randerson7761 Yes it was the beginning but not the pinnacle.

Yes, I feel extremely lucky I was able to experience concerts like this back in the 80's, yearly 90's.
Watching your reactions, hearing & seeing these concerts for the 1st time. Brings me back to when I first heard them. Wishing I could experience it again for the 1st time. Going to the record store (yes they did exist) buying the new album and going home to listen to it for the 1st time with my friends....best feeling in the world. My sister was involved in the underground metal scene in the 80's and we were friends with lots of bands. We saw Metallica play in many clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area back then, including my sisters living room! Those were some great times!
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
You win lol
One guess to what your sister was doing to earn that
Without a dope
My bands managers son was a good friend of James. The camping trips I'd get invited to were lit.
Metallica was my first concert . My brother and I went and I've been privileged enough to have seen them 3 other times. The energy in the crowd is really something else.
I might have heard this song before. Lol Dude this is one the most famous, often played, rock songs in the world. Might be top 5 most famous. Hard to think of many songs more famous.
If you never really listened to metal like that you really haven't heard it. 🤣
I love that Guitar Hero seems to be the catalyst for new people to 70-90s rock. At the time it was just cool to play, I never once considered there were kids out there being exposed to music they never would have heard without it. Shout out to Tony Hawks pro skater as well. Definitely helped rock/metal spread to new ears, pretty awesome.
If you ever saw a Yankees game you heard this song. It was closer Mariano Rivera’s song. They played it every time he came out.
@@juicesghost8501 Oh hell yah. We bought ROCK BAND for our PS3. My daughter was 7 or so. She started learning the drums. Anyways, it exposed her to all the great rocknroll I grew up on. Old boston for instance REO, Joan Jett, Tom Petty, etc. etc etc. So we do this for about 4 years till we tire of it. But her knowledge of good music was huge.
Fast-forward to high school - she's in school band and going to her shows riding in cars driven by other student's parents. They're listening to the music they grew up on (same as mine) and my daughter knows all the songs! Her friends just look at her like she's an alien, and the parents in the front think it's the coolest thing and keep turning up the volume cuz she knows it all. That's awesome.
Yeah he used to play football - no doubt he heard it over the PA somewhere in some stadium.
I’ve seen them LIVE twice.
It’s incredible. The energy is the best of any live show.
Same here, I saw them in 1999 and then in 2019 and the live energy was something else
Ive seen them 4 times,Dori!! Just fabulous!! Uve ever seen Iron Maiden???
AC/DC is comparable...I've seen them 7 times
Agreed, and I have seen a ton of bands
@@ST_DCT I have them below Metallica, but actually 2nd, ball breaker tour. I saw a ton of bands too so that's saying a lot for ACDC
I was lucky enough to see them 3 weeks before this was recorded, also open air, also on an airfield.
They were preceded by The Black Crowes, Queensryche, and Mötley Crüe. They were followed by AC/DC!
Great memories ...
this was the Monsters of Rock tour correct?
@@ehouse430 Yes, it was. One of the best concerts of my life.
Pantera was the first band

The Moscow video is incredible/legendary. I can't believe the amount of people to this day.
I don't know if people understand/still remember what this concert meant at the time as well.
I got to see Metallica during the Reload tour in Pittsburgh. Great live venue and crowd. They were still just about everything you would hope for live back then.
Yeah, ruzzia was just got their 1st McDonalds, and one the first "actual rock bands" there was Metallica!!! Such a greatness there at that time.
Lex was right tho, never again. Icon curtain is back. 😅
They were Awesome at Tampa Stadium Florida Also this song never gets old!
I understand. 1991, the year the USSR fell. This concert would have been impossible before then.
Brad: How do you prepare to perform for 1.6 million people?
Answer: You just be Metallica.
One the GREATEST bands ever!
For real they commanded that stage like it was nothing, made it look easy, legends.
I think they used drugs and alcohol...
I'm pretty sure the big 4 was there, not just Metallica. I'm not sure if Megadeth was there or not though.
Nope this was AC/DC show not anyone else's and they did It for free and paid the other two bands . Facts . They didn't even know who the first openers was this band In the video and the other band
I took my son to see Metallica about five years ago as a graduation present and l assure you, they still rock. Best concert I've ever been to. You should go see them.
you have to understand the history of this time period. This was just before the fall of the Soviet Union and communism. This was a free event called Monsters of Rock, and basically it was the first time, that western, american(!) bands visited. Nobody suspected this much people to attend. And this music then was not just music, it was basically the start of something new and free. Imagine being there, never hearing anything powerful like this, knowing, that the world you knew is about to change.
Wrong. Go back 2 or 3 years EARLIER to a thing called The Moscow Music Peace Festival and a slew of '80's hair bands including Bon Jovi, The Scorpions, and Motley Crue. It was 1988 or 89. It was also aired on almost every radio station in America at the time. Look it up.
@@michelleruffalo4385 hmm.. thanks for the info, learning a thing every day:)
@@danielszomor5025 oh me too. I just happen to be old enough to have heard the event I spoke of on the radio. I was still in school and couldn't listen to all of it because of bed time and because of school.
The Moscow Music Peace festival was in 1989 and Scorpions and Bon Jovi were co-headliners… Scorpions were absolutely ridiculously worshipped in the USSR (which is funny, because Russians and Germans haven’t exactly gotten along over the years)
I’m gonna keep pressing…lol. You must experience Iron Maiden-Hallowed be thy name. One of the most amazing songs ever recorded.Up the Irons!
I second this
Fear not Darrell - I chatted with lex the other night on Discord and emphasized doing that song - she said the next one would be Metallica - moscow, but she noted that Hallowed is a must watch/listen.

Hetfield crushes Steve Harris!
Panter Domination from the same concert!!! Dimebag was the epitome of a metal guitar player.

Love this reaction! I've only seen Metallica 7 times now, the first time was 1989 and the second 1992. This show was in between. I got to meet Metallica both times. They were so amazing. All that said, Metallica still puts on what hell of a show. I just saw them in 2018, took my youngest daughter for her first Metallica show, and it was still very awesome! They still deliver after all these years! If you get a chance, go. You won't regret it.

So do it rappers! Grab some instruments, learn them, and let’s get rocking again! We need it!!!
@@jamesleverentz6294 Yeah I'm seeing a huge demand and opportunity for these artists to step up and start rockin.

it's funny how she says they're the "epitome of a rockstar", but actually the term rockstar was created because of them, they are the thing that demanded the creation of the word.
Brad, if you’ve ever watched a Virginia Tech football game on tv, they enter the stadium to Enter Sandman. Their entrance is on UA-cam....
