Soldier boy was just an asshole with ptsd, he didn't seek world domination or infinite praise. His end goals would have been to retire to an island and do cocaine off of a stipper until he overdosed, he wasnt a trait psychopath. Just very angry and severely warped from DECADES of torture.
He makes this known when he says multiple times that he fights for america, he had a sense of duty and wasn't obsessed with being a god like homelander.

Homelander forced himself on her, not like she wanted it. Also, she raised the kid, Homelander only came into the picture very recently. Also, he was horrible to Ryan.
Everything Butcher did, he did for his wife. Of course he's going to honor his wife's last wish. It was clear he was reluctant at first and over time it seems he grew closer to Ryan and understood there is hope to raise him right.
Only thing I didn't like is the little brat. He protected Homelander even though he just met him and chose him over his own mother who raised him.
