I think it's because Butchers the one person who isn't afraid of him. It's how I imagine a famous person feels talking to someone who has no idea who they are.

Edgar and noir it’s a professional level of respect. Butcher I would say is the only person he respects on a personal level, maybe even see as an equal in strength of character rather than strength itself
And ultimately, this is the entire crux of the show. Homelander, for all his personal traumas and stunted personality, is, essentially, bored. He really has nothing to do that matches up to his power level. This is also Vaught's fault as they should've been every bit as invested in creating adequate villains alongside their heroes if only to ensure that boredom didn't metastasize into villainy. Power unchecked is malignant. Just imagine if an alien threat ever hit this universe. The heroes there would be overwhelmed because they would actually have to become heroes, something few of them were ever given a natural incentive to become on their own. Superman stayed on the straight and narrow largely out of a sense of moralistic duty. Homelander is constantly reminded that he is a product, so he acts accordingly, and wow is it a boring, unfulfilling life.

In season 1, Homelander saw Billy as nothing. He found him interesting and even exciting to mess with, but he saw him as no threat at all. Now, Billy is legitimately enraging him and annoying him.
Butcher took his son away from him. He was stood right there in front of him, and he took Ryan like it was nothing. Nobody but Butcher has done that and Homelander, in a way, respects it.
Honestly, I think this was the first time they had a full conversation since Billy started hating Homelander. Previously Homelander says the most stuff, it’s kinda nice to see these two exchange more words.

So far, season 3 has been them both going from being obedient towards their bosses/corporations, to them regaining control/power and relapsing on their worse habits. Of course Homelander is enjoying it because he’s a sociopath who doesn’t love anyone but himself. Since Billy has people he deeply cares about this is hurting not just the people around him but himself too.
Season 3 to me is changing the characteristics of each major character in the story. Hughie taking the Butcher approach to taking down Supes versus him in the beginning of the series, Starlight having to put up with Homelander, Butcher becoming the thing he hates and getting superpowers, Homelander becoming unhinged and others
This feels like a chess game. And in chess, the kings can't kill each other. It'd be cool if they played like that, like there's a deal that someone else has to move to kill the other
They referenced, teased there final confrontation in the comics. Its gonna be another bloodbath if this scene is prove of it. Karl Urban and Antony Starr deserve Emmys for these roles. Top tier acting for two of the most unhinged, ruthless antagonists/deuterantagonists in the series.
I love how Homelander calls Billy by his legal first name “William” - something most heroes do when addressing the villains. Like how Batman only ever addresses his enemies by their real names or how Dumbledore addresses Voldemort as “Tom”
William is also another name for Bill/Billy, I love that he doesn't take threats from Homelander when he gives them, if Butcher had powers, he'd know how to control them (like Superman when he's learning how to fly), but later in episodes 5,6,7 and 8, he takes Compound V, that gives him heat-vision

“Someone to vent to?” Interesting perspective. It’s strange, Butcher and Homelander seem like they relate to each other in this scene. Butcher feels like he’s under the thumb of the new organization that polices Supes, not being able to go as wild as he used to. Homelander feels the same but about Vought. Despite being enemies, or perhaps because of it, they understand each other on a much deeper level than anyone else.
They finally showed the reality they both are living. They both are nothing without each other. Their whole life their purpose is to be opposite each other. No holds barred🔥🔥🔥🔥
Honestly I'm not sure how I feel about Butcher seemingly having the same powerset as Homelander, and it really comes down to the fact that it's so statistically improbable for that to happen, it's hard to suspend disbelief watching it. Both Homelander and BB are hot headed , narcissistic , short tempered individuals. The Heat Vision and Super strength manifests that nature as their abilities granted by Compound V.
Homelander with his menacing stance outside someone's window, while Butcher responding with one of the best jokes in the show is why I love these two characters
It really shows the greatest tragedy and intrigue of hero/villain dynamics. Just the fact that they share so many of the same thoughts, same view points. But it's the key differences that set them apart is what will always lead to the clashes between them both. Homelander and Butcher recognize that between each other and in their twisted personalities, there is a respect, kinship even and unspoken friendship they have cause with each other, they can be their purest, truest selves in the most sadistic ways possible.
Despite his strength and powers Homelander is cautious of Butcher because Butcher is always capable of finding some kind of way to harm Sups. Kinda like how us as humans can be fearful of a single bee or wasp.
Come on people, it's not a hallucination, 1-he asks about his son 2-calls him by name 3- tells him how he feels 4- challenges him that in the end it's just the 2 of them standing up to have their final battle. Also the whole conversation is epic because he is there.

I think the scene was real. Homelander is shown to have superspeed in the boys: diabolical, which shares the same universe as the show. So he could've easily left without Butcher noticing.

I was reading that this scene was inspired by the restaurant scene between De Niro and Pacino from Heat with Butcher and Homelander. The whole verbal warfare between these 2 cats are so great and it's never disappointing to watch. The face/off that is going to happen for sure.

Butcher truly is Homelander’s Batman. He loves him. I think the reason he puts up with Sage is bc of how much she reminds him of Billy telling him how he really feels
2:53 Homelander is baiting Butcher on a final battle, because Homelander sees that Butcher is his greatest adversary. The problem is that when he goes "a little more Scorched Earth" he doesn't realize whom he's truly asking. Butcher is not an adversary, Butcher *HATES* Homelander with a passion. Butcher didnt see that as a challenge, he saw it as a doomsday clock. So he went by any means to take down Homelander. The fact that he backed out on the deal with Soldier Boy was nothing short of bad writing.

So far, Homelander is stealing the show for me. Everytime he's on screen, I'm on the edge of my seat; specifically, the scene with A-Train. That, and seeing more of Soldier Boy.
Homelander was so sick of everything in this scene that he genuinely wanted the two of them to cause so much chaos in their attempts to take each other down, just for the entertainment factor.
I really like how from the beginning, Homelander realized that Butcher wasn't afraid of him, and in fact, shared a lot of similarities with him, just on different sides of the spectrum. Such a well written relationship between two parallels

“Someone to vent to?” Interesting perspective. It’s strange, Butcher and Homelander seem like they relate to each other in this scene. Butcher feels like he’s under the thumb of the new organization that polices Supes, not being able to go as wild as he used to. Homelander feels the same but about Vought. Despite being enemies, or perhaps because of it, they understand each other on a much deeper level than anyone else.
He's like the psycho brother Homelander never had.

Honestly I'm not sure how I feel about Butcher seemingly having the same powerset as Homelander, and it really comes down to the fact that it's so statistically improbable for that to happen, it's hard to suspend disbelief watching it.
Still, they are basically the same person, and seeing how he handles Homelanders powers is gonna be quite interesting

Both Homelander and BB are hot headed , narcissistic , short tempered individuals. The Heat Vision and Super strength manifests that nature as their abilities granted by Compound V.

Homelander with his menacing stance outside someone's window, while Butcher responding with one of the best jokes in the show is why I love these two characters

That “I look forward to it” was probably the most genuine thing Homelander has ever said on this show.
It really shows the greatest tragedy and intrigue of hero/villain dynamics. Just the fact that they share so many of the same thoughts, same view points. But it's the key differences that set them apart is what will always lead to the clashes between them both. Homelander and Butcher recognize that between each other and in their twisted personalities, there is a respect, kinship even and unspoken friendship they have cause with each other, they can be their purest, truest selves in the most sadistic ways possible.
In other words, Butcher and Homelander are two sides of the same coin. They need each other to have a purpuse in life

Come on people, it's not a hallucination, 1-he asks about his son 2-calls him by name 3- tells him how he feels 4- challenges him that in the end it's just the 2 of them standing up to have their final battle. Also the whole conversation is epic because he is there.

I think the scene was real. Homelander is shown to have superspeed in the boys: diabolical, which shares the same universe as the show. So he could've easily left without Butcher noticing.

I love everytime Homelander and Butcher speak to each other. They are personal with each other. I love it. You can feel the tension.
Butcher is the closest thing Homelander has for a friend, because he's not afraid of him and is always honest with him.
2:53 Homelander is baiting Butcher on a final battle, because Homelander sees that Butcher is his greatest adversary. The problem is that when he goes "a little more Scorched Earth" he doesn't realize whom he's truly asking. Butcher is not an adversary, Butcher *HATES* Homelander with a passion. Butcher didnt see that as a challenge, he saw it as a doomsday clock. So he went by any means to take down Homelander. The fact that he backed out on the deal with Soldier Boy was nothing short of bad writing.
Fun Fact: The director of this episode referenced the scene from The movie “Heat” with De Niro and Pacino sitting across from on another at the coffee shop.
Thought about that scene too while watching. McCauley (De Niro) and Hanna (Pacino) don't hate each other like Butcher and Homelander though.
This season is looking to be the best so far. Can't wait for the fridays to come!

Homelander was so sick of everything in this scene that he genuinely wanted the two of them to cause so much chaos in their attempts to take each other down, just for the entertainment factor.
I really like how from the beginning, Homelander realized that Butcher wasn't afraid of him, and in fact, shared a lot of similarities with him, just on different sides of the spectrum. Such a well written relationship between two parallels

Butcher is the one thing that Homelander has that gives him purpose. The one thing that makes him feel like a superhero. A bond with an actual nemesis. A connection that for all of its hatred is sincere. Someone that treats him like he would everybody else

It is VERY disturbing.
Like Homelander pretended (Or not) to go there to get Ryan (Something he actually cares about doing) but what he really went to do was talk to Butcher cause how lonely he feels. Those two hate one another, but are the only thing that keep them functioning, sane is an...exageration.
The people who think this was a hallucination forget that this convo was referenced in the Herogasm episode. Homlander says "this is cheating. It wad just supposed to be you and me. Deals off" and then later when Butcher reveals his powers he says to Homelander "Scorched Earth". Idk why people thought this excellent moment wasn't real. It makes total sense that it would be real. That Homelander his so bored and frustrating by Voughts corporations mumbo-jumbo he would wanna play out his superhero fantasy with Butcher and have a convo about it. And him vanishing at the end does prove hallucination. It proves how fast he is. Same as the end of season 1. He was fats enough to save Butcher and the baby from the explosive. So this scene just doubles down on his speed capabilities
