No, people are reading it wrong. Billy finally realised that to protect or to save Ryan was to take away the influence that drove him, which would be Homelander. As seen throughout season 4 Homelander attempting to corrupt Ryan The writing gives us two clues Mallory was trying to trap and force Ryan to do something he didn't want to do and retaliated. Something butcher never did when his own dad abused him and especially his brother. They never fought back, which eventually lead to his brother's death after he ran off. We are reminded of his brother with the phone call to Hughie as butcher is dying The second clue would be Kessler (butcher) Kessler intentionally spares Neuman's daughter. There was no obvious reason to spare her and could have ended them both there. She's dangerous and kills people. What we know again, the choices for Neuman's daughter was made by her, to weaponize her daughter so she could protect herself This tells us that butcher/Kessler aren't monsters Homelander and Soldier boy have no qualms killing anyone

Plus soldier boy was the only one who kept his word and basically got betrayed because of it. Not only that but homelander is right on the brink of snapping and destroying everything and everyone and they betrayed and got rid of the only one who could stop him.

Nah I don’t see why they didn’t have it like Ryan’s scene in season 2, where the screen went white for a few seconds and soilder boy looked like storefront. He still could have tried to do his big kamikaze blast and Maeve got a cool moment, and we would get the impression the Starlight might be able to stand up to homelander. But this just feels weak

Butchers body would have been weaking due to the longing affects of the compound V, so he was really weak here. Soldier boy doesn't seem to be strong at all compared to either billy or homelander.
Soldier boy was showing off. He was throwing them around instead of trying to kill them. Considering the situation and his character none of those who entered this room should walk out alive.

Felt bad for Soldier Boy in this scene, first his team betrays him, now a new team he thought he could trust betrays him and sends him back where he was trapped for decades. Fucking hell, all over Ryan, if Ryan wasn’t here this would have been an easy ending to the story.

It takes a while to charge, but I don't know if that last one could've been cancelled, since he got out of two supes holding him and the gas, and then still blew up when maeve pushed him

Yeah he was forced into that sit for forty years, I doubt he’s going to be concerned with the guys who are trying to help repeat that all again for him, especially after believing they would be true to their word on killing Homelander (well some of them anyway.)
Butcher was completely inconsistent this season, but I believe that is the point of his character. He fits the criteria of the flawed anti-hero and it's all because of Ryan. Ryan represents Butcher's internal conflict, because he is the son of his beloved wife (Becca), but is also the son of his sworn enemy (Homelander). Therefore Butcher is torn between fulfilling his wife's promise of protecting her son Ryan or killing him off as a loose end to avoid having him corrupted under Homelander's influence. He essentially has to choose between the love he has for his wife and the hatred he has for Homelander. This is why he betrays Solider Boi, because he ultimately chose love.

Ryan lasered SB across a room as he was about to kill Homelander, SB shoved him into a wall, and kept up with charging his explosion ability then Butcher shot his laser eyes at SB for shoving him. Literally everyone but Maeve was interrupting SB as he was about to kill Homelander. Bad writing? Absolutely, but not for the reasons you stated, because he wasn't trying to kill Ryan. After the kid shot laser eyes at him, the least SB could do was shove him into a wall.

For someone whose military service was mostly propaganda, it is quite interesting to see that Soldier Boy has the fighting skills to back up his strength. Seems that even if he did become the worlds strongest man, he did take the time to at least learn how to fight and use his powers properly.
Which is really cool actually. He knows how to use his body and his abilities like Superman (the dude apparently trained Martial Arts so he's not just throwing random punches), Homelander though...
You gotta admit, for someone who lied about being in wars, he still knew how to scrap better than most of the characters on the show. His atom blast ability is just a backup and a pretty powerful one at that since it depowers other supes
That's the comicbook counterpart though, in this one he actually fought in WW2. Like Stan Edgar said "he was killing Germans by the dozens" & his skills displayed during his time in South America in the flash back where he's fighting the Sandinista troops in Nicaragua while the rest of his team are panicking is evident of SB combat experience.

This is when the show died for me. It just feels so contrived. Like Homelander kills innocent people because he wants to without remorse. Most of Soldier Boy's kills were an accident and he actually sounds somewhat remorseful what happened.

To be honest Butcher did pretty good Death battles usually dont last that long( it took 50 sec for SB to knock out butcher before mm and starlight came) especially between guys with different level of strength
As Charlie from Smiling friends once said “WE WERE RIGHT THERE!” The second closest they’ve ever gotten to killing Homelander and both times was because of Soldier Boy. Not only that but because of all the idiotic decisions they also lost Maeve in the process. Way to go guys 🫤
After the season 4 finale. Yeah they probably should've risked Ryan getting blasted. The worst he's a normal human. Now with the virus in Butcher's hand, more supes will die and with Homelander taking over. More humans will die Way to fumble the bag.
Those punches at 1:03 were brutal. In all honesty a fully powered SB and HL could go either way. Butcher put up more of a fight against HL than he did here against SB.
Bit late but makes sense, HL’s combat skills are rusty af and his experience is none existence. SB is a legit trained soldier like Butcher who always kept himself busy by training and defo shows signs of combat experience, Billy did better with HL at first since he’s sloppy but SB ain’t.
SB can actually fight but i think it depends more if he would be able to hit his power, it has been shown that it disabled or at least weakens powers before the explosion
Homelander and billy fought for like 10 seconds before soldier boy snatched homelander by his cape, it wasn’t a full fight, soldier boy did “better” because he had more time to fight butcher not because he was stronger in the finale or something. We know soldier isn’t on par with homie since homelander overpowered Him with one hand at herogasm and even overpowered soldier boy, butcher and hughie combined

My personal opinion is that Homelander and Soldier Boy are both on par with each other in terms of strength. Hear me out first before any judgements. Firstly: Soldier Boy lost against Homelander one on one back in Herogasm because Soldier Boy blew up the building with his chest blast attack before Homelander showed up. This is actually confirmed by The boys wiki. Soldier boy was weakened before that, hence why he didn't do that great in his fight against Homelander while Butcher was almost on par with Homelander in terms of hand-to-hand (but Homelander was still a good deal stronger than Butcher both in terms of physical strength and lazer vision. Butcher was screaming while Homelander was just clenching his teeth, showing Homelander was about to very possibly dominate Butcher in a lazer-vision staring contest had Soldier Boy not intervened by pulling on Homelander's cape). Secondly: He is dominating butcher with Mid-level difficulty here in this fight whereas Butcher was almost able to match up with Homelander from before. If Butcher was able to tank Homelander's punches but gets domincated by Soldier Boy here, it shows that Soldier Boy is likely on par with Homelander. I know a lot of people will argue and say that Homelander was "designed to be stronger than Solder Boy". That is true, Homelander can fly and can shoot lazers out of his eyes but Soldier Boy can adapt. He can evolve. Remember that before, Soldier Boy didn't have any radioactive chest repulsor energy blast techniques back in WWII but he gained a power-up after his time from being tortured by the Russians. He also gained a stronger tolerance to the sleeping gas being used by the Russians. This shows that his Compound V abilities allowed him to adapt. His WW2 self was definitely weaker than Homelander but he has became stronger after those 50 years of being tortured. I now think his power-up puts him on the same level as Homelander, if not, maybe even stronger. I mean, a chest energy blast that can burn out all traces on Compound V inside someone's bloodstream and can even kill someone as strong as Homelander? Thirdly: Why was Homelander so scared of seeing Soldier Boy on the security cameras? Because he can see how big of a threat he is. Not just to the company's reputation but himself as well. A Supe with energy blast capable of destroying entire city blocks? Homelander sees just how strong of a threat Soldier Boy is and became terrified of seeing him. Fourthy: When Butcher lazered Homelander back in Herogasm, he was sent falling down off his feet whereas Soldier Boy stayed standing when Butcher lazered him in the face. Solder Boy only had a small cut on his face whereas Homelander was stunned by the hit. Fifth: When Soldier boy punched Homelander in the face, Homelander had a noticable bruise which terrified him. It was the first time Homelander got injured by someone. Soldier Boy had no visible injuries from his fight with Homelander, no bruises or cuts, showing that Soldier Boy is more durable than Homelander. I would think Soldier Boy might be on Homelander's level. Maybe even better... Again, my opinion. Feel free to debate with me if you want.

I may be reading into it but it didn't really seem like he wanted to kill them all until they tried to gas him. He threw Kimiko rather than crush her neck, threw Butcher, he seemed to hesitate a bit with Starlight. Like he was waiting to see if she would back off.
Also to note that he’s the strongest supe from the beginning, and this team gave him a harder time than his original one. As we see in the series he takes no caution to imminent dangers because he knows he’ll just tank em. But here he’s cut. I think that humbled him and made him feel less than invincible but ultimately that bravery kicked in and he charged without the Gurantee of survival on his back. Probably the first time he’s done that and in a twisted way proving that he really is heroic by nature just not stature.

Butcher was completely inconsistent this season, but I believe that is the point of his character. He fits the criteria of the flawed anti-hero and it's all because of Ryan. Ryan represents Butcher's internal conflict, because he is the son of his beloved wife (Becca), but is also the son of his sworn enemy (Homelander). Therefore Butcher is torn between fulfilling his wife's promise of protecting her son Ryan or killing him off as a loose end to avoid having him corrupted under Homelander's influence. He essentially has to choose between the love he has for his wife and the hatred he has for Homelander. This is why he betrays Solider Boi, because he ultimately chose love.

Those punches at 1:03 were brutal. In all honesty a fully powered SB and HL could go either way. Butcher put up more of a fight against HL than he did here against SB.
Bit late but makes sense, HL’s combat skills are rusty af and his experience is none existence.
SB is a legit trained soldier like Butcher who always kept himself busy by training and defo shows signs of combat experience, Billy did better with HL at first since he’s sloppy but SB ain’t.
SB can actually fight but i think it depends more if he would be able to hit his power, it has been shown that it disabled or at least weakens powers before the explosion

My personal opinion is that Homelander and Soldier Boy are both on par with each other in terms of strength. Hear me out first before any judgements.
Firstly: Soldier Boy lost against Homelander one on one back in Herogasm because Soldier Boy blew up the building with his chest blast attack before Homelander showed up. This is actually confirmed by The boys wiki. Soldier boy was weakened before that, hence why he didn't do that great in his fight against Homelander while Butcher was almost on par with Homelander in terms of hand-to-hand (but Homelander was still a good deal stronger than Butcher both in terms of physical strength and lazer vision. Butcher was screaming while Homelander was just clenching his teeth, showing Homelander was about to very possibly dominate Butcher in a lazer-vision staring contest had Soldier Boy not intervened by pulling on Homelander's cape).
Secondly: He is dominating butcher with Mid-level difficulty here in this fight whereas Butcher was almost able to match up with Homelander from before. If Butcher was able to tank Homelander's punches but gets domincated by Soldier Boy here, it shows that Soldier Boy is likely on par with Homelander. I know a lot of people will argue and say that Homelander was "designed to be stronger than Solder Boy". That is true, Homelander can fly and can shoot lazers out of his eyes but Soldier Boy can adapt. He can evolve. Remember that before, Soldier Boy didn't have any radioactive chest repulsor energy blast techniques back in WWII but he gained a power-up after his time from being tortured by the Russians. He also gained a stronger tolerance to the sleeping gas being used by the Russians. This shows that his Compound V abilities allowed him to adapt. His WW2 self was definitely weaker than Homelander but he has became stronger after those 50 years of being tortured. I now think his power-up puts him on the same level as Homelander, if not, maybe even stronger. I mean, a chest energy blast that can burn out all traces on Compound V inside someone's bloodstream and can even kill someone as strong as Homelander?
Thirdly: Why was Homelander so scared of seeing Soldier Boy on the security cameras? Because he can see how big of a threat he is. Not just to the company's reputation but himself as well. A Supe with energy blast capable of destroying entire city blocks? Homelander sees just how strong of a threat Soldier Boy is and became terrified of seeing him.
Fourthy: When Butcher lazered Homelander back in Herogasm, he was sent falling down off his feet whereas Soldier Boy stayed standing when Butcher lazered him in the face. Solder Boy only had a small cut on his face whereas Homelander was stunned by the hit.
Fifth: When Soldier boy punched Homelander in the face, Homelander had a noticable bruise which terrified him. It was the first time Homelander got injured by someone. Soldier Boy had no visible injuries from his fight with Homelander, no bruises or cuts, showing that Soldier Boy is more durable than Homelander.
I would think Soldier Boy might be on Homelander's level. Maybe even better...

I feel like after all of the abuse SB went through he was prone to act the way he did towards his team when they showed any sort of retaliation or just not following orders. But SB didn’t deliberately try to kill them until they betrayed him. I don’t think he’s more evil than homelander, but he definitely isn’t a saint either. I believe there are times when he did stop crime and was a hero, the whole thing with MMs family was an accident and he’s labeled a villain for it even though collateral damage has happened a lot because of supes.🤷

I may be reading into it but it didn't really seem like he wanted to kill them all until they tried to gas him. He threw Kimiko rather than crush her neck, threw Butcher, he seemed to hesitate a bit with Starlight. Like he was waiting to see if she would back off.
Also to note that he’s the strongest supe from the beginning, and this team gave him a harder time than his original one. As we see in the series he takes no caution to imminent dangers because he knows he’ll just tank em. But here he’s cut. I think that humbled him and made him feel less than invincible but ultimately that bravery kicked in and he charged without the Gurantee of survival on his back. Probably the first time he’s done that and in a twisted way proving that he really is heroic by nature just not stature.

Its crazy how easily SB tanked Butcher's lazer and punches considering the fact that Butcher was able to match up to Homelander in the herogasm fight and even dominated him for a second, just goes to show that what SB lacks in flight and laser, he makes up for in Insane durability and Raw Strength, Consider him a boxing Heavyweight whereas Homelander is more of an agile athlete type of strong
