2018 Porsche 991.2 GT3 Manual Review - Better Than 996 and 997 In Every Way?

  • I had the unique opportunity to drive 3 "facelifted" GT3 generations back to back on the same canyon road. Let's explore whether the 991.2 (with a manual!) is better than the 996.2 (2004) and 997.2 (2011) across the board, or if the older generations offer a more rewarding driving experience.
    See my comparison of the 996.2 and 997.2 GT3 here: • 2004 Porsche 996.2 GT3...

    I have both 997.2 GT3RS and 991.2 GT3 Touring. 997.2 is just magical. The best IMHO.

      Lucky bugger - yes, the 997.2 RS was absolute peak GT3 (not counting the unicorn 4.0).
      Enjoy!

      Same here, normal GT3 though. The 997 feels raw with clutch and steering but the engine on the touring has insane breadth. Love both and will only sell the gt3 to upgrade to an RS or perhaps a GT2 maybe.

    Had the pleasure to drive all generations - even the 992 GT3 on track many times…
    For me it’s the 997.2 GT3 RS which is the pinnacle of all of them. And in case you got the funds. Go for the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0. That thing is just magic.

    Great car, but the 997.2 is the one. Out of a total of 2256 cars built in 09-11, only 800 cars came to North America. It's fast, just the right amount of analog, Mezger powerhouse, and has the perfect proportions. Sure, the performance is up a bit with the 991 GT3, but who cares. From a nostalgic perspective, as well as a great investment, the 997.2 will stay in my garage. With that said, excellent video and beautiful cars all around.

    • @FlatsixSTM
      @FlatsixSTM Рік тому +1

      The one for you, sure. And also the most collectible due to rarity like you mentioned. But from a driving standpoint, I’m not taking it over the 4L with the better responsiveness, soundtrack, gearbox and the better chassis. The Mezger was legendary but it doesn’t quite hold up anymore. All great cars, and all can be appreciated, but the 991.2 is the one… for me. We also have a tendency to be bias towards the one we own, we chose them for a reason after all. Just pushing back with the notion that the 997.2 is objectively better because best is subjective.

    • @mikesav9
      @mikesav9 Рік тому +2

      @@FlatsixSTM Hmm... Since you labeled me "biased" I believe you're assuming I only own the 997.2 GT3... I own multiple 911 cars, including a 991.2 GT3. I love both, but I think we know which car owns the nostalgia of two. I'd sell my 2018 without a shadow of a doubt before I even think about letting the legendary Mezger go. It's something most just don't understand unless you own and mesh with one regularly. There's a big reason why well cared for, clean, 997.2 cars are able to fetch about the same numbers as the 991.2 cars. Anyway, if the 991 is your cup a tea, by all means drive it hard and enjoy that thing! Cheers

      @@mikesav9 to each their own! The market price is a reflection of both scarcity and desirability. They made a lot of 991.2 GT3s and it would be relatively easy to replace. All great cars. Cheers

      Cars as investments is not really the point of the video though is it? Even as a 997.2 owner myself I think the most frustrating part about the ownership is the ridiculous prices they pull at auction. I’d drive it everywhere, all the time, now mileage is a consideration for ownership despite me never wanting to look at cars as investments. Meanwhile I can practically swap 991.2 GT3s like pairs of pants. I clicked on the video simply because I had been thinking lizard green would be fun next…

    As the owner of a 991.2 GT3 6MT, I largely agreed with all the points you made. I would add a few observations. The clutch is ridiculously light for a 500 hp engine, and yet the feel and engagement are great. Although the gearshift is otherwise excellent, there is a slight to-fro motion of the gear lever on/off throttle tip-in in 4th gear which is common to these cars; did you note this in your example? The steering very direct and it does give lots of feedback. The auto rev matching is a lot of fun. The solid valvetrain so far has proven to be reliable. The shape of the front bumper and overall looks are better than the 992. I think this will go down as one of the best GT3 models of all time.

      Both the clutch feel and gearbox on my 982 GT4 were better than the 991.2 I have now - except the gear ratios obviously. The GT3 box is still based on the 7-speed which itself is based on the PDK box and it's compromised. Pretty good for road use but the clutch grabs too high and the spacing between each gear slot is narrower (because there's literally space for 7th which is absent)

      @@markgtrheyes yup mine doesnt either, 15k miles... also my 997 gt2 clutch and gearbox feel much much heavier... i missed it at first however now I realize it makes driving the gt3 all day long much more pleasurable and easier to deal with if you have traffic and doesnt sacrifice the driving experience once you get use to it

    I think you nailed it in the head with the 991.2 when you said it's hard to rev it out in the canyon road. (Can tell from the video too you pretty much have to short shift 2nd and pull back from 3rd right away... Essentially in the mountain it's a one gear car...) It's a frequent complaint from a lot of 991 GT3 owners... the car's performance envelop have gotten so high that it became really hard to really enjoy "all" of the car on the public road. The steering wheel I would say has gotten thicker in the 991 (vs. the 997) but the diameter gotten a lot smaller, as a result the steering feels more alive and direct. The the shifter and the clutch on the 991.2 is far superior and easier to live with. The 991 is a better all around sports car. The 997 is a more special driving experience.

    • @Rushwind100
      @Rushwind100 Рік тому

      I agree with Sam here, and you said it at 8 min mark too,… compared to 997.2/3, this car is very hard to “wring out” using all of the first 3 gears on twisty B roads. It really does need much bigger broader roads in order to enjoy repeatable 3rd gear redline pulls. The song this car makes at 9k makes you want to experience / hear it all the time, and that won’t happen much on twisty Mtn backroads.

    But I just got my 997.1 C4S back from FSI and it now has an R43 engine.
    In day to day driving, up to 5k RPM, the R43 is much quicker. Have to ring-out the GT3 to keep-up (and pass) it.

    991.2 GT3 RS, in most respects its peerless and I say that having owned most of the GT/RS products at one time or another. I have also tested the 992 GT3 RS and logged it on track and still prefer the 991.2 GT3 RS - I haven't warmed to the 992 series, bigger, heavier, awful haptic "switches", BMW/Merc/german taxi interior a bit soul less. My top three Porsche sports cars would be (a) 991.2 GT3 RS - literally peerless, it has everything. (b) 718 GT4 RS - a total riot, just fun (c) 981 Cayman GTS 3.4NA PTV or 718 Cayman GTS 4L NA - just a great all rounder, go anywhere, do anything sports car. In my view Porsche have drifted into lifestyle cars and badged/"numbered" marques but don't have the flair of Mclaren or Ferrari.

    Drove my father's 997.1 GT3 and a 991.2 GT3 back to back; and both are amazing.
    The new engine is spectacular; its a mezger in its power delivery but smoother and revs to 9!
    However, the old car is just magical though. The old car's steering is much better imo and that puts it over.
    The 991.2 was a better car overall but yet not as good, not as special. It has what the other car lacks, something unquantifiable.
    Would I trade my regular 911 for the new GT3? Every day of the week. Would I trade the old car for the new GT3? Never in a million years.
