Hi Matt, you really shouldn’t use harnesses on the road, and without a hans system. It puts far too much strain on the head / neck in the event of an impact. Normal seatbelts are much better for road use for the neck in any impact.

@@GothamClivethat’s not true at all. This is a common misconception that’s derived from carbon-carbon brakes used in Formula 1 race cars. They’re completely different than carbon ceramic rotors. Carbon ceramics don’t require any heat build-up period to operate effectively.
It’s so cool to see the differences in car cultures between here in the US and over in the UK.. You guys have so much less space and tighter roads compared to the states and that makes us look at cars so much differently.. You’re the best Mat!
I just don’t like the look of the GT3RS. I find the spoilers too fussy, the wheels are ugly. It looks like something from MaxPower and I’d feel a bit of a d*ck driving it. I know it’s a great road / track car, but I prefer the simple lines of a Porsche. Big love to you Mr Watson, love your videos, be they here or on CarWow, you always make me laugh.
The 996 narrowbody is the perfect size for cruising in the twisty roads. Easy to place and that face grows on you. Now it's a semi-modern classic you don't look like a nonce driving it. Plus its a elegant and pretty looking thing.
Matt is spot on. The 996 has the best lines of any 911 ever made: thanks Pinky!! This video highlights just how good the 996 is and how over rated the 992 gt3 RS is
Enjoy your vids! Joined. All I can say is Carwise must be doin' a helluva' job for you to get these cars! I've gone thru 70+ in my lifetime to finally afford a 2019 991.2 4 GTS, and I absolutely love it!
Some madman at my work has a silver 991.2 GT3 RS, and I prefer that to the 992. It's not exactly understated, but it's a bit more subtle than this one. Plus the 991.2 is my favorite generation of 911, hands down. (no offense, Mat)
I think the 996 is aging very well as I’ve owned mine for ten years and public opinion is so much nicer now that it was , I think people have now come to realise how good it actually is
Watching this video makes me realize how impractical the GT3RS is. What makes a 911 special to me is how capable yet practical it is, you can track on weekends and commute on weekdays. Getaway trip with your partner, easy! The GT3RS gets rid of all of that and just focuses on the track part, which to me isn’t as special as something that can do everything well.
You are absolutely correct but I reckon Porsche specifically intended this GT3RS more for the track. The electronics, brakes, tyres, active aerodynamics etc. enable it to get those insane laptimes. They've got plenty of 911 models in their range (C4S, Targa, T, C2S, GTS, Turbo and Turbo S etc.) to choose from that are more practical. Catering for different requirements and budgets for sure
I wouldn't begrudge anyone a GT3RS, but I see it as a great tool for a very specific job. The better a specific a tool is for a given job, the more compromise there must necessarily be. The GT3RS is a fabulous track car, but you lose out on some practicality and have a high price tag. If one can afford it and can live with the compromises, why not? I suspect the GT3 (minus the RS) is probably a more palatable every day driver / weekend track compromise. The 996 is a relative bargain, but my choice would be the next iteration, 997.1 / 987.
The gt3 rs sounds like my civic and thats not a compliment also "i bought it to drive, not to look at" mad respect for that one. we need more people like you Matt
The 996 represents the best value for money 911 in history and is an appreciating classic. The new cars are going to lose sooo much money by comparison, especially when the financial system collapses.
Great and always funny reviews! However, I do not see the point buying a GT3 RS and not tracking it. But entertaining comparison and the 996 C2 manual is a fantastic bargain and values are going up. I prefer the gen 2 though. The 3.6 torque is lovely, better interior and gearbox too. Also got the Ohlins on my 996 and those are amazing and you can play around with the settings depending on mood or type of road.
With all due respect, I also don't think the GT3 RS is a supercar. GT 3: Pretty much the ultimate sportscar GT 2 RS & GT 3 RS: Road-legal racecars 918 Spyder: Hypercar 911 Turbo S: Daily / Grand Tourer, Autobahn-monster, backroad hero, but practical enough I think, supercars come with an inherent sillyness and lack of usability in most situations (including race tracks) that just doesn't fly with Porsche. Thoughts?
Totally get it: I like to get max bang for my buck and for a while had a C2 996 3.4 manual. Then I tried a facelift 996 GT3, thinking it probably wouldn't be 'that' much different to my car. Oh my word, it was a TOTALLY different experience. Even today, ten years + later that drive still sends a shiver down my spine. So yes, if you have the means to enjoy these things without breaking your finances, go for it.
Interesting video, i have had over 11 911's in my car career and some notables are my 993, 997 gt3, 997tts and 991gt3rs and the only porsches i have left are my 996tt x50, 996 cab, and my 996c2 4.0 m96 on gt3 suspension and kw cs coilovers. Those 3 porsches fulfill my porsche fix and represent everything 911 that i experienced. And Rather than buying late model 911s i used that budget to buy a 430 scuderia, sls amg and now a 599gtb. All this to say there is a world outside of porsche, and a well sorted 996 will let drivers experience a genuine 911 at a bargain
MAT, how lovely to see someone being honest about the fact, that a decently modified 996 3.4 - and this one is IT! - is basically enough for a maximum of driving pleasure! Nice, nice, nice... You don't want to know how I REGRET selling my former Horizon-blue 1991 964 3.6L Carrera 2, with a cuprohr-exhaust. Still dream about it at least once per week...
I like the look of both cars, but I would take the 996 cause of the size. Smaller = more fun (even if your wife might not agree). Another car, Aston Martin Vantage, I thought it was a huge car, but saw one for the first time in real, parked next to a KIA EV9, and the Aston looked so small in comparsion, so I loved it lol :)
The 4.0 Boxster (and Cayman) are the shizzle. All the other stuff is sloppy seconds. Well, if you track the RS is the shizz. Wait until they drop to 5K. OK, I giggled on that last one.
I'm not a Porsche fan but that GT3RS does look awesome. You did say it was a bad road but it looked like it was _porpoising_ a little bit. Is that the right word?
I suspect more than 10 times better. It's non-linear - like the difference between an ordinary meal and a perfect meal - the taste, the texture, the smell - all combine to produce that boost to serotonin, that 'wow' factor that pulls it up out of the ordinary - and makes it extraordinary and a memorable experience. And after all, Mat is car wow, not auto ordinaire...
if old 911 costs 25K now, then it will cost 250K 10 years after. Try to find cheap 911 from 80-90 now. All are hella expansive. It's time to invest guys!
The bubble is going to burst. Younger people are not as interested in cars as previous generations, The Playstation generation have kept current prices high and seen the boom in Japanese performance cars.
I cackled when I heard him say the poly bushings are only a bit noisy. I lied to myself about poly suspension bushing noise for awhile too. Give it time you'll likely regret that mod. Not throwing shade I just went through this myself.
There’s no way the 996 sounds better. It literally sounds old. It’s not a tight sound at all. The GT3 is all within a certain range and the 996 sounds like it has exhaust leaks. Also can’t wait for this video to be spammed multiple times on the Carwow channel. They’ll just delete the community post after a day and repost it to get around UA-cam’s anti-spam measures.

Matt, as a modded 996 owner myself, you should get yourself a set of silver 18" OZ Allegrita wheels in 996 gt3 sizes. The lower wheel weight offsets the smaller sidewalls, and the added offsetm grip and handling is worth it, at least for a summer set of tires. I drive mine around NYC, lowered on these wheels and the ride isn't too punishing! Definitely give it a think, with the suspension setup you have, this wheel/tire size package will make a serious jump in performance (ask me how I know)
@@richy69ify sporty in looks you mean? or in driving? I notice a difference right away when I switch over from the winter wheels (stock 18" widths with all season conti tires) to the summers, OZ's (gt3 widths with summer conti tires). Some Porsches can be driven and still be an investment… a GT3 Touring costed like 190k in Germany when it was launched and now those are offered for like 230k with 5k-10k km on the clock.
@@gockelxxxxxl9584 I know the situation pretty well but even in EU, you weren't able to buy gt3 touring without dealer markup (or at least in CZ) and basically even today thanks to low allocation numbers you cant buy even base carrera under 4 mil. Kč (160k euro) and GT3 were easily 6-7 million cars (240-280k Euro) unless your porsche dealer was your boy / girlfriend. 911s are completely out of reach because of insanely good marketing of Porsche and "investors" And so it makes more sense to buy Taycan GTS for reasonable 70-80k euro, rather than more enjoyable but more money consuming and easily double the price 911.
Judging by the closing comment this will become the highest mileage gt3 rs in the world! I love taking a different car out simply to enjoy the differences, I even enjoyed the (admittedly short) drive I had in Kia Piccanto. As a journo I guess that Matt gets that different car thing as part of his job.
Mat, how dare you say these are the worst headlights of the 911… the turbo of this version are the worst, these are elegant, along with the wheels, my uncle has a 00’ Boxster S with these wheels, it is so beautiful and elegant
The 996 is one of the best value for money sports carts there is. Get a good one they are bullet proof and easily a daily. Still analogue enough to still be enjoyable without unusable silly power. Don't knock them until you've owned one.
Those poly bushings in the 996 are what is causing the harsh ride. They are likely seized in the joints of your control arms. They are one of the worst things you can do to a car, they have LITERALLY zero benefits, they just make the handling way worse even before they fuse over time. The material inherently binds in joints. You gotta replace them all with a self lubricating material like delrin, and use brass sleeves machined to the proper lengths to relieve any binding stress on the bushings. This allows for the suspension to move properly but no deflection within the joints beyond their inherent geometry. A whole kit even custom one off is only around 1000 bucks.
Don't care how much it cost, or what list I'd need to be on to get it; I wouldn't be seen dead driving any car on the road with a rear wing like that, or harnesses. To me (if you're over 30 years old they scream mid-life crisis!) It's just a track day car for the super rich to play with (IMO)
Totally understand your logic. I’m lucky enough to have an personalised e90M3 as my daily. But my fun car is my 991.2 GT3 with it’s Akrapovic exhaust. Actually the M3 has an Akrapovic exhaust as well but that’s beside the point. Cheers. Enjoy
Driving a car like the GT3 RS is a huge flex because you really can’t do much with it other than drive it and enjoy the performance. Which is a lot. And don't even get me started on the Porsche Carrera Cup. 26 glorious 911 GT3 Cup cars doing a standing start, some of them bouncing off the rev limiter before a gear change every lap they flew by on the main straight right in front of me. Again, chills.
Hi Matt, you really shouldn’t use harnesses on the road, and without a hans system. It puts far too much strain on the head / neck in the event of an impact. Normal seatbelts are much better for road use for the neck in any impact.
The same with carbon breaks. If you use them on the road they don't get warm enough and are worse than normal breaks.
@@GothamClive Do you even know what you are talking about? I had a 2015 911 GTS and a 2017 911 Turbo S. The Turbo S with CCB. The difference is enormous any day under any condition
Thanks
@@MatWatsonCars Aled is a bit of a prick. But he is correct on all counts. Thanks for the vids, Matts.
The sound from my 996 is utterly addictive. I hunt high walls and tunnels just to hear that raw, raspy, sound, cutting through the air 🎵
The 996 narrowbody is the perfect size for cruising in the twisty roads. Easy to place and that face grows on you. Now it's a semi-modern classic you don't look like a nonce driving it. Plus its a elegant and pretty looking thing.

I reckon the 992 GT3-RS looks sensational, without ruining the history of everything before it, all Pork 911's have been awesome in their own way.
Love the 996, especially the 996.1 GT3
Even tho the 996 isn't faster than the r8 Porsche does have some good car's
mat's 996 is like the best 911 to daily, simple and lovely
19:48 That exhaust note... 😫😫😫😫😫😫😫
Nothing compares to the r8 exhaust but beautifully
I would love to have both in my garage. Still pretty satisfied with my 987 boxster, btw , keep the 996 until you die, its a classic
I think the 996 is aging very well as I’ve owned mine for ten years and public opinion is so much nicer now that it was , I think people have now come to realise how good it actually is
I’ve never had a problem with the lights like a lot of people do. Think it’s aging well.
@@pj9375aged well like old Audi Quattro 1982 too.
It's always been good, but it's always looked horrible. That's the problem.
Not forgetting the engine issues unfortunately
One the road it's POINTLESS. On the track it's brilliant. So it's a track day toy.
The gt3 rs sounds like my civic and thats not a compliment
also "i bought it to drive, not to look at" mad respect for that one. we need more people like you Matt
Matt is spot on. The 996 has the best lines of any 911 ever made: thanks Pinky!!

I'm a bit annoyed with Mat Watson.
GT 3: Pretty much the ultimate sportscar
GT 2 RS & GT 3 RS: Road-legal racecars
918 Spyder: Hypercar
911 Turbo S: Daily / Grand Tourer, Autobahn-monster, backroad hero, but practical enough
I think, supercars come with an inherent sillyness and lack of usability in most situations (including race tracks) that just doesn't fly with Porsche.
Thoughts?
Some Porsche snobs don't know what they're missing out on. Love the 996 😍😍Exhaust mod really makes a difference.
Maybe the reason they Don't know what they missing is because they watching a better car like the r8

I've personally always loved the looks of the original 996 GT1 style headlights.

They give you that 90s cheesy vibe 🤌😁
I'm warming to them IF I DON'T HAVE ANOTHER ROUND 911 around, but that body is NOT elegantly shaped. :(
@@ActionManXVI If the ONLY aesthetic issue was the headlights, I'd agree...
can someone explain me , why they put an alcantara stearing wheel in this car. you have to clean it so often, because of sweaty hands
25:50 the real question is if you can drive the 996 10 times or the gt3 rs 1 time, which one would you choose?
I'm probably the only person who would rather just have a Turbo S. Faster, more comfortable, has a trunk, AWD weather proof driving.
I had a 911 way back in the 80s. I called it Bobby. You can still see why with these later generations.
I love the way how both yanni and mat got sponsored by hello fresh
Totally get it: I like to get max bang for my buck and for a while had a C2 996 3.4 manual. Then I tried a facelift 996 GT3, thinking it probably wouldn't be 'that' much different to my car. Oh my word, it was a TOTALLY different experience. Even today, ten years + later that drive still sends a shiver down my spine.
So yes, if you have the means to enjoy these things without breaking your finances, go for it.
1:00 “It makes it sound better”
The neighbours beg to differ 🤣
Sound doesn't compete with 458 V8, not even close.
Everything you just mentioned about the gt3 is what the r8 have over gt3
We need an episode of Mat daily driving the GT3RS to pick up baby supplies etc, but its a time attack and he can only shop at Costco
Gt3 great car nothing compared to r8 but wonderful car
@MatWatsonCars where did you send your old Porsche to get all that work done to it? Mine needs some works to it
When will you take gt3 rs to track? It is made for it cmoon
Nice to see porsche supporting long term cars like these with new screens
The biggest bargain is the 986 Boxster 80 percent of a 911 for 5k they drive great!
Not the 2.7 though. haha
The 4.0 Boxster (and Cayman) are the shizzle. All the other stuff is sloppy seconds. Well, if you track the RS is the shizz. Wait until they drop to 5K. OK, I giggled on that last one.
Matt's 996 is absolute dream material 🤤
I'm not a Porsche fan but that GT3RS does look awesome.
You did say it was a bad road but it looked like it was _porpoising_ a little bit.
Is that the right word?
I'm also not a Porsche fan but I'd sag r8>any Porsche
I suspect more than 10 times better. It's non-linear - like the difference between an ordinary meal and a perfect meal - the taste, the texture, the smell - all combine to produce that boost to serotonin, that 'wow' factor that pulls it up out of the ordinary - and makes it extraordinary and a memorable experience. And after all, Mat is car wow, not auto ordinaire...

a 996 will not be worth 250k in 10 years lol. maybe 30-40.
It certainly isn't worth £25k either. At a push it might be £18-20k with all the mods...

Yeah i agree
I mean the 996 sounds like it has an exhaust leak because it does...he mentioned it at the beginning. It's a deliberate modification.
To each their own
I have stainless steel boxes on my 996 . Sounds better bloody great , ohh and i saved £200😊
25k for a Mk1 early 911_996 with the proper lights and some mods with a good service history was a good deal. Well done you but a GT3 RS is a lovelly car but sadly I am not on a internet journalists income so I will take the 996 every time and have as much fun as I need. Nice Vid well done.
Love design on both of them
Matt, as a modded 996 owner myself, you should get yourself a set of silver 18" OZ Allegrita wheels in 996 gt3 sizes. The lower wheel weight offsets the smaller sidewalls, and the added offsetm grip and handling is worth it, at least for a summer set of tires. I drive mine around NYC, lowered on these wheels and the ride isn't too punishing! Definitely give it a think, with the suspension setup you have, this wheel/tire size package will make a serious jump in performance (ask me how I know)
I like stock look.
What road are you driving to notice this difference ? Nice wheels but IMO too sporty for a 996.
@@richy69ify sporty in looks you mean? or in driving? I notice a difference right away when I switch over from the winter wheels (stock 18" widths with all season conti tires) to the summers, OZ's (gt3 widths with summer conti tires). Have you already done over 1k miles in your investment car? LOL
911s are completely out of reach because of insanely good marketing of Porsche and "investors"
And so it makes more sense to buy Taycan GTS for reasonable 70-80k euro, rather than more enjoyable but more money consuming and easily double the price 911.

Overall, I love old cars. But that GT3 RS is really amazing. Porsche is one the brands that got a lot better with time
Don't care how much it cost, or what list I'd need to be on to get it; I wouldn't be seen dead driving any car on the road with a rear wing like that, or harnesses.
Cheers. Enjoy
If I had the space I'd love a 996 project. They're such an underrated and undervalued car.
Want to see you take the GT3 RS on a road trip including pushing it on tracks like Spa etc. This is what it was really made for.
When you paid £250000 for the GT3RS at retail and are going for minimum £330000 2nd hand I would say that's money well spent
Driving a car like the GT3 RS is a huge flex because you really can’t do much with it other than drive it and enjoy the performance. Which is a lot. But it really says I can afford to have a two seater supercar that doesn’t even have room for one bag of groceries if my wife’s going to the store with me
