- How to Renovate a School Bus into a Tiny House / RV. Today on Modern Builds I'm starting my biggest DIY project to date. I'm turning a vintage SCHOOL BUS into a mobile TINY HOUSE on wheels!! This bus build will be a six part series, with each episode focusing on the buildout of an individual room (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, & exterior). I'm calling this first episode the "clean slate" episode to get the bus ready for the episodes to come; I tackle the demo, design, interior paint, framing, basic electrical, and plumbing rough ins. It's a lot, but I've done my best to keep all the information as clear as possible. Thanks for watching and subscribe for more bus conversion goodness. (materials and supplies linked below)

This book is a comprehensive guide for anyone who wants to build a second unit on their property. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzaRUJNcbypw-fRBDbqqz43ULIa-1EGP- It showcases various types of houses, such as garage apartments, with photos, videos, and floor plans. The book provides the square footage and the dimensions of each house, as well as the option to order the plans or customize them according to your preferences. You can choose from a range of styles, from ultra modern to cottages and A frame lake houses. The book also offers suggestions for sheds, pool houses, and office studio buildings. This book is an ideal resource for the aspiring home designer.
I love how he was telling us how to do this like it was normal to buy a 10,000 bus and turn it into a tiny home XD
10,000 bus?
and yea it is
more like 3,000... Buses are pretty cheap
Yeah but people spend almost $2000 a month on rent think of that every month for a year if you slowly put away money you could totally buy this bus and it would be worth it’s weight in gold.
@@spooky9176 didn't he say at the beginning hr bought it for 10 grand

This bus buildout has been a long time coming.. couldn't be more excited to share this journey with you all!! Thanks for all the support :)
Yay! Love the idea of this series. Look forward to watching.
Always i will be inthe bus haha
Good wishes
Love the build, just a word to the wise people get rid of the subfloor and ceiling to insulate/ make sure nothing is rotten or rusted.
Woohoooo finally!!!!! Those Facebook snippet videos had me so excited to see some more progress!! 🙆
Is this the bus you drove to Joshua Tree?
Suggestions: insulate the floor walls and ceiling . Trust me when it’s hot it’s hot and in the winter it’s cold. But everything is nice good job sir
Yeah the whole time im watching this I'm wondering why he didn't do insulation.. I mean living in a hot area it's not necessary but it does help out alot and when he decides so go to a different environment he is going to notice
The bus is already insulated
Watch the whole video. Its already insulated.
More insulation does not hurt.
These buses are insulated poorly. And the roof should have been insulated as well. All that metal is gonna sweat horribly once someone starts living in it. Moisture is gonna cause mold, even in the desert.
That bus came from a town close to where we live. Small world moment.
my husband is a retired El Reno Police Lieutenant. i also grew up in El Reno and in Yukon... and yes, very small world :D
It’s so cool to go back and watch this again, this was the first video I ever watched on your channel and I have watched almost every one since. You are truly one of the best UA-camrs out there
Suggestion for the guys trying it:
Rust is the worst enemy of this type of vehicles. Always check the floor, walls and roof. Look for leaks or damage. Check the structure that holds the metal sheets and try to fix your interior structure to the steel structure (instead of the metal sheets).
Unfortunately this may mean removing the floor and part of the walls. I recommend it and also look for mold. The old insulation might have some of that also.
I'm not totally sold on screwing the wood beams to the metal sheet. I would prefer to create brackets and weld those to the structure, paint everything and the bolt the wood beams to the bracket.
Always put a circuit/fuse box if you are mixing big metal boxes, water and electricity. You will be driving and things might break or get loose damaging the installation. You might suffer a traffic accident and a bus fire is no joke.
Finally, consider that a big metal box will change dimensions with the temperature (interior and exterior). You might need to consider this in order to avoid warping or breaking wood. That also plays an important factor on reducing the noise while driving.
On the mechanical side, check suspension, axel, brakes condition and lubrication on all those points. Consult a diesel mechanic and hear their ideas about the project. You even might take advantage on the original electric installation, or neumatic lines included on the truck.
Great advice!
Awesome info!! thanks
I've tried to be as positive and constructive as possible, but the work that is shown on the video is a little disappointing and can be dangerous if the guys following the channel try it without a correct planning and guidance.
I know that the channel is for DIYers, (damn, even my self I have been optimistically ignorant of some of the challenges I faced in my life, but I always tried to reduce the risk, at least the risk to injury others). Until today, the risk of getting hurt, sick or to injure someone else with the projects was really low. This build takes the risk to another level (I know, you have your disclaimer) I'm not comfortable on how it's presented.
As your pal Four Eyes has said on his videos, designing and planning how tackle the problems and needs is the trickiest part of a build. Everybody can use a tool.
Planning should have taken a bigger part of the video.
Sorry for the text wall. Keep the good work, but more importantly, keep yourself safe and healthy (and help to keep the followers safe too).
Seems like in these skoolie type vids ... not seeing much in the way about .... the "mechanical" aka engine and drive train information. Seems to me ... that spending a few grand having the engine gone over and what ever.
If I can add think about ways to minimize weight in your build, remember your going to be hauling all this around wherever you go. Your building with the mentality of a home reno, way too many studs thinner skins, I build two of these and have learned to build thin solid panels with 3/4" furring strips and 1/4" skins. Watch a video on how they build rv's cabinets. Added solid foam in exterior walls and in walls for extra rigidity. In my mind just saying your not an electrician or plumber doesn't excuse doing bad work, the electrical dangers are just as real in a vehicle as they are in a home. As for plumbing this is where you really need to be positive of what your doing vibrations/potholes will really take a toll on these components, small leak can cause MAJOR problems down the road. Mold wood rot .... Please leave areas like this removable for servicing. Good luck with the build and please do some more research on planning and prep, IE lighting, switches, speaker wiring, water, heat/ac ventilation, exhaust fan....... before putting in the "pretty".
I'm from el reno, I've literally been on that bus!
This Build Is SUPER Impressive, The Bath Room Is AMAZING!!
This is taking "living on the road" quite literally
I would have to agree
Why do you comment on every video I watch
The homeless man down the street would agree.
Can't help but get the feeling that some of these "design choices" were made to save work, not because of the aesthetics..
Feel the same way, lazy in places. Witch is a shame really.
Yeah... should have removed tge stickers and used a wood or wood look floor.
How do you spent so much time and effort masking off the windows, but justify leaving the stickers for texture. And not to mention he painted over the emergency exit, handle and everything. I cringed.
Quan Luong that hurt

A very nice clean simple start.
A friend gifted me a school bus.
I've been intending one into my life expecting that I would find one at a good price.
I guess you could say I'm flowing.
Now I need to develop some skills like you.
After reading the comments now I need to learn some mechanic skills.
Nevermind, "UNIVERSE , SEND ME THE RIGHT HELP FOR THIS PROJECT"!
I've been a Contractor for 33 year's and I like the way your skills are going with this bus, hope to see you finish this project ,like a jack of all trades around this part the woods brother!!!!
Before you get too deep into this project, I humbly suggest using Dow Corning Foamular (or similar) insulation board inside the gaps in the wall. It's easy to cut with hand tools and easy to apply with liquid nails adhesive. If you care about the gaps, you can fill them in with a few cans of Great Stuff spray foam insulation.
Besides making the interior more comfortable, it will pay for itself by reducing the need to burn diesel to run the air conditioner.
Im humbly think the same
Lmao all the times where you said I didn’t remove something to keep it original I just kept thinking maybe it’s just too much work
Stickers got me...that was a no-brainer.
he does that on wood working projects too :)
OMG this whole transformation is so good
so glad you have links for everything!

Suggestion: Air Pods do not provide any hearing protection whatsoever. Use ear muffs.
Grinding metal can put out over 100db which will damage your hearing permanently. But, wear whatever you want.
@Anonymous Apologies, Im from Aus, and our hearing protection are called ear muffs. They are rated to our safety standards.
I don't mean over ear headphones if that's what you thought.
@Anonymous even regular foam earplugs for noise reduction are far better than even the best consumer ANC noise cancellation headphones
@@xistencestudios8904 Definitely
There are companies that make ear bud/ear protection hybrids. Its possible that that is what he was wearing.
@@owlislike doesn't look like it and I have not seen such earbuds. I have seen ear muffs with speakers in them
Loving this project so far, great production quality on the video as well. Definitely try to capture and properly dispose of coolant (or any other vehicle fluids) in the future though, it's horrible stuff to get out into the environment, and you can get some pretty hefty fines for it in most places as well.
I really wanna do this one day
You may want to consider adding a fuse board because if something goes wrong it will take out all the electrics and risk damaging the power supply.
Or set his bus on fire due to short-circuit
So hyped to see you tackle it all 🙌🏼.
First I was worried about the fact that he didn't change any window. I thought of all the nergy loss when heating or cooling the bus. But then I discovered that he didn't even insolate the floor or walls. This bus is gonna be a pain in the arse to cool or heat.
Yeah. I was wondering why he hadn't installed any insulation.
yo and the electrical plug with exposed wire 14:10. so the walls and floor are going to sweat and possibly short circuit.
and the thickness of his walls, couldve taken a lesson from trailers and RV's... their walls are super thin, to cut down on weight, for obvious reasons.
This bus is way bigger than usual ones! I really enjoy what you did with such a huge bus!
This thing is going to be sick!!! So excited to see you started the series. Looking forward to see more !!!
You've been blessed with getting into everyone's recommended
Love the way you explained very detail....Thanks..!
Your epic,im chilling.
Meaning we are epicly chilling.
so awesome and excited for this series
Does the outside of the bus has all the screws points out? "Hellraiser type"?
How do you covered them?
i love how on these builds they never bother looking at the mechanics of the vehicle and just start putting stuff inside of it, the outside of that looks like shite, make sure its mechanically sound first
The bus ia not drivable.will just sit as a tiny house
@@whathandleUtalkabt If that's true, he got absolutely ripped off at $10k.
Edit: In a later video he says he paid $8k and $2k in repairs and it runs. All in all not too bad, but they're are better deals out there for those looking to get into the skoolie life.
Thank you recommendations for giving me something I like
Literally 20 seconds in and I'm already exited as hell
literally the fact u build things, make these videos and have a podcast is so inspiring ! so much respect for someone who has that passion and pursues it
While you were painting, this reminded me of a PCP addict that was asked by his daughter to repaint her bedroom. So he got all jacked up on wet, took 20ngallons of paint, and literally painted everything in her room. Wall clock, book case, books, floor, windows, bed, the potted flowers....
Pcp addict? Looks like she set herself up failure.
Was this a UA-cam video or something?
You are making it soooo easy step by step. Definitely more inspired of moving forward and go purchase my school bus. Great job!
How did you do?
I like that you share information on what you show. Most youtube videos are can well be bs because they dont do that.
So excited for this project!!
*This is gonna be an epic journey*
Weirdly, I wanna try this. It looks super fun!
I like how you made the templates of the curves and all so you could make the real wall coverings, that was smart, I'm gonna have to do that this time around... Building in a bus is hard and easy depending how you look at it.
Think about ways to minimize weight in your build, remember your going to be hauling all this around wherever you go. Your building with the mentality of a home reno, way too many studs thinner skins, I build two of these and have learned to build thin solid panels with 3/4" furring strips and 1/4" skins. Yes, he obviously did not research or watch videos about properly converting a bus. He has 275K views now so mission accomplished but, as a usable bus, it is a waste of Home Depot’s money as is.
Great info, ty for those of us who r going to be trying to build a skoolie
Mike you honestly never sees to impress with the things that you are able to do. Truly a talent and an inspiration
Best Skoolie Shower build that I've seen so far!

Before i started the video i was going to make a smart ASS comment saying" I wonder if he left the sticker on the bus like he does sometimes on the sheets of plywood. I started laughing when he said he is leaving the stickers and painting over them.
You really have a hard on for Mike huh? You comment on a lot of his videos. 😂

What a great project .
I love this project! One thing I would suggest to look is a vinyl floor it would make it feel more like a home. Goonsquad did it on their army truck and it really bring an home feel. Blue paint it likely to peel at some point and vinyl plank is very durable and waterproof!

Great job, amazing video! THX a lot
Being honest usually with videos like this i get bored but i enjoyed this
Theres so many different things that were done wrongly or poorly I'll list them off for you;
1.Painting over the stickers when they start to sweat they'll peel off under the paint either taking the paint around it best to remove them
2.the coolant spillage when removing it you should of once turned off undid the clamp above it and let it drain that way.
3.screwing into the roof without any sealant best to use a metal washer with a nylon washer on the self tapers it'll stop any future problems of the wood rotting and such.
4.using those angles its completely pointless using those only causes more play in the walls which is typically bad in something that gets a lot of vibrations from road use to fix this stagger your spars out and drill and screw them every bit as strong and you don't have to waste your money on 100s of angles.
5. Painting the floors vinyl typically doesn't stick well to anything so spraying that primer on will cause peeling using the resin based paint was a great idea but not so much the primer and the same goes for the lack of cleaning stains and such vinyl is extremely funny whether it'll stick or not.
I ain't doing this out of hate or anything like that I just want you learn and improve :p wish you all the best in the build.
I would pass on 2 because he isn't a machanic
@@patrikpolda yeah thats completely understandable hopefully he reads my comment even though he's done many things w and as someone who's got experience in those fields I just hope he listens rather than the attitude of "it's my way or nothing at all" mentality.
Forgot tho mention sharkbites connection are going to fail when driving around.
Instead of using metal right angle's to secure the wood to wood, i would use a system called "pocket hole jig"
all those 90o brackets.....
Looove it! 😎😎😎
