- Avid surfer, Scott, takes us on a tour of his off-grid box truck tiny home, which he likes to park on one of California's most popular beaches. The inside has everything he needs, including a bedroom, kitchenette, big screen tv, ari conditioning, and a bathroom to rinse off after a long day of riding waves. And the views rival those of the million-dollar homes next door!

8x18 is 150 sq ft. $65000 for 150 at ft with 7 foot ceiling is over $400/sg ft for a mobil bunk bed. EPA will outlaw it before the Biden Regime ends.

My design is very exact to the box dimensions and the Morgan FRP box. And they are all different. Any builder can copy my build by the video and hopefully custom tailor it to their needs.

You are right: that view is AWESOME. I never thought of this before this video, but what if the police don't like that he is there, or he gets pulled over: there are many stories here on YT of having vehicles confiscated/towed... it is bad enough if it is your car, but in his case, it is his home. And I don't think the "if you don't want trouble from the police, don't break the law" is a valid argument in 2024... Also, the police seem to be more willing/able to find excuses to search vehicles much more easily than homes. However, depending on the state, it might be a risk no matter if you live in something like this or a house. (not trying to start a fight: just curious what others think...)

My surf crew met him at San O while surfing. Cool truck. Friendly guy, pleased to meet and know him.
This is a brilliant design for his use. It's got everything you could need for a wonderful time at the beach. His grandson must LOVE beach camping with grandpa!

I met Scott on this beach 3 years ago on this beach and his truck is amazing! It's so well thought out and he gave me a tour. There is so much storage and it is very nice and comfortable inside. Scott is a friendly guy and if you see him on the beach say hi.
I want to know where he parks! I am in Los Angeles and would love to have a similar box truck. I don’t see trucks of this size or larger parked. I keep asking myself-where would I be able to camp or even park when not camping.

Surfers are a different breed. My friends dad still surfs pretty much daily at the age of 76. Wind- and kitesurfing, also tought himself to wingsurf last year. Inspirational 😊

A vaccuum hose can fit under there just fine. Mold won't be an issue if he doesn't spill anything down there. Plus the compartments holding the pantry are completely closed off from outside. No bugs or rodents are going to get in there.

Try living in Canada. It’s almost impossible to pay for fuel, AND RENT. - In BC, it’s $1500.00 and up for a 1 bdrm, 1 bath apt.

@@tavenchristensen3157 I live in LA so our rent is insanely high too. 2k for a studio appointment. But depending on how much he drives, I assume he pays over 1k a month on gas and maintenance considering his truck probably gets like 12mpg

The average two story homes in BC are charging $2,500. Downstairs, and over $3,000. Upstairs.
Every one is looking for alternatives (tiny homes etc)

@@tavenchristensen3157 ya it seems like every metro city has the same problems. High rent and homeless. Middle states have cheap cost of living but much less corporate jobs. Hopefully things change soon
the attention to detail is far better than most "professional" RVs
Back in 2014 when I was watching tons of tiny house/van living videos, I thought about why not use one of those moving trucks. It's cool to see someone do it.
This dude is goals!! $65k all-in, 100% electric, super-roomy, slick storage & best view in the nation. He's figured life out for sure.

Just wanted to clarify: the "truck" is not all electric. Only the fixtures in the box are. He shows the main diesel tank at 3:12
65k... hmmm. For 85k, I have 2 acres on the outskirts of town... 2000 sq ft. And a 30x40.... Trump era interest. Couldn't imagine living in a truck. To each their own.
He lives in a location that doesn't require him to use Air conditioning, 1 A/C unit draws over 1000 watts, he has 2. It would last about half hour or less before he's plugging into a generator. I recently bought a 3000 generator and wont even start some A/C units cause it takes so much power on start up. He probably sits outside at the beach most days and only watches TV when it's raining. The solar keeps the fridge going. I like his set up, I mostly run 2 High end desktop computers all day, power draw, would need a full array of solar panels like a satellite. lol
I'm 53 now. California resident that won't be able to afford a home with the current market. With my retirement THIS is what I would like to do. Those are great little trucks. FANTASTIC build.
All fine until you get tired of looking for parking every day of your life.

You want to be able to afford a home. And it's going to get old living in a truck (if that's not what you want).
@record3523 Easier said than done. How do you expect a regular middle class person to do this exactly? Move to a different state? The truth is the cost of living is rising everywhere in the U.S. Want to actually buy an affordable home that looks decent? Save up some money and move to a place like the Philippines, Thailand or Vietnam.
Move to a less expensive state and build your own retirement cabin out of stabilized rammed earth.
1600 sq ft with metal roof, rainwater collection,and minimal energy usage.
You could build the whole thing + land for less than $100K. Make it as self-sufficient as possible. Solar power and batteries have gotten really inexpensive.
I was wondering why it looks so roomy inside, compared to others. Then, he clears it up: no overhead storage. Brilliant! The design is less coffin-like, too.

This is the best box truck home I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. It is well thought out, practical, efficient and esthetically pleasing to the eye. Even with windows on the sides, it still feels bright and homey. The in-floor closet is ingenious! Great use of space and storage.

I didn't build it to save money. I built it to get what I wanted and was not available on the RV market. Old school. A word of advice. What ever you think you can build it for, double it. However long you think it will take, triple it.
You know it's a GREAT design when the tiny home dweller declares it finished, complete, done, and nothing to add!

At the end there he says if the truck is lost, then he's living in a tent, not gonna build another one.
I lied. Just added a second stereo over my bed, Added a 28 ' tall cell booster antenna. And a few other small things. It does work perfect for what it was designed to do. I do not like building anymore. I'm to old for another 9 month build.

40 years in the building trades. I’ve seen and worked on a lot of high-end projects. I’ve also done architectural millwork and finishing, electrical, machine and tool repair, electrical and electronics… musician, mixing consoles, live and studio engineering, it goes on and on. All my years there are a number of things that have stood out… This has been added to that list. And not just this, but the fact you’re enjoying what I imagine is your retirement.. Well done. How is the air inside with the cedar paneling ? I wonder can you smell the cedar scent ,it is supposedly a lung irritant ,so I was wondering how it is to sleep or stay inside without an open window or air flow through . It looks great ,especially the floor storage & smell proof toilet. I have damaged lungs do to a work accident and have to take air flow & scents into account, as not to trigger an attack. The salty air is good , we stay on the EastCoast but a build of our own would giv us more freedom to choose , each item that goes inside. Not looking to stay more that a week and change a month.

Probably the only box truck that I would consider living in. I like the wide open feel and getting the air in through the windows. Toilet set-up is best I've seen.
Going to switch to a electric boat toilet. My guests are lame.

It truly is one of the best i have ever seen for a great cost.But if you have never lived in a vehicle there are some issues that most people cant get over. I did it for a year to save money to travel.
The big one is parking. It can be a super drag,depending what city/area you are in to find a place to sleep at night where you dont have to worry about crime or nosey neighbours. The moving around gets to a lot of people.
@@krimpoo As someone who's been a nomad for 13 years it takes a certain type of personality, minimalist, loner (not to be confused with anti-social, just self sufficient and not needing a large group of friends/family near at all times). As with all things there's good and bad, I am an urban nomad with a stealth Ford cargo van, zero problems with police or businesses running me off but have had 4 attempts of people trying to steal my catalytic converter, twice in Biloxi, MS, once in Garland TX, once in Irving TX, it's what happens when they don't know someone is inside. I bought a welder and cut up some bed frames found on the side of the road, welded the pieces to my exhaust system (resembles a dragons tail now) and no attempts for 3 years now. The only thing about this build that I'm not a fan of is that he has no direct access to the cab, if someone wants to steal the truck there's little he can do except go along for the ride.
I really like the security of using a box truck. The interior design is Awesomeness!!
It would take nothing to rip the wall right out if you wanted to.
The box is not aluminum like most are. it is FRP= 3/8" plywood sandwiched between fiberglass. Pretty solid.

This is on of the most comfortable designs i have seen. Floor storage opens up head space and feels more like house than RV. Really like it.
wow, a perfect example of walking into this project with pockets full of experience. he threw out 'cedar-lined', 'recessed lighting', 'triple switches' and 'emergency lighting system' like it was nothing.

Floor storage is brilliant , so cabinet doors don’t fling open and centres the weight, best design I’ve seen🎉
There ar 4 floor storage bins inside. The one under the flip up table is for tool storage. The one by the door is deep and holds 2 guitar amps for the outside theater and mixing board. The outside floor drawers are 8' long. + a small one for sunscreen, surf wax, and extra fins.
That build is absolutely perfect for him. Tailored to get the most out of his lifestyle. Amazing and ingenious.
I could adopt it as is no problem and I don't surf.

As it's been stated already this is one of the most impressive builds I've seen in years. Literally thought of everything, didn't cut a single corner and utilized absolutely all the space he could. Phenomenal work!

I've seen a hell of a lot of these builds on UA-cam over the years, my favourite lunchtime videos, and I can say without a doubt - this is easily the best one I've ever seen. Some of these homes on wheels I couldn't see myself living in. This one, absolutely 0 complaints.

This is one of the most amazing campers Ive seen. Absolutely fantastic. I did wiring for a living and his work is top knotch. Also, I just watched several videos of new RV having "frame flex" and major structural issues. Pretty sure this camper won't have any issues like that!
I love how he has the guitar etc. In glass and the glass in the bathroom door. The under floor storage is awesome.
The microwave under the bed is the one thing I couldn't live with, but the rest is amazing, even has a washing machine. Love it! 👍👍
I guess it depends how much you microwave stuff but yeah, it isn't very practical there but was probably the only place it would fit.
If it results in a worthwhile space benefit, I'd happily live with it.

I'm a professor of Architecture in Boston and I am showing this to both my design and furniture classes this week. Awesome job!
I designed a tiny house in High School Architecture in the 70's. I was ahead of my time. My teacher was not impressed.
I can tell you, I've watched thousands of these build videos, from manufacturers to diy, and diy turned professional. I also regularly complain about the high-cost and cookie-cutter design of builds. I've seen people living in Teslas, a student who managed a BATH (beautifully done) in a car the size of a Subaru, studied Sam Shapiro's vision for the modular approach to conversion, etc. I'm sure you understand the point. This build solves every pet peeve I have. I thought I might have caught him on a safety issue, as the box cannot access the cab, which is a serious fire hazard in the back. But his shower hatch window offers escape :) Just a gorgeous and brilliant design, altogether. The electric system is pristine. Those windows! This build is a huge "Wow!" the best design ever. checks off all the boxes. has bed, living room, kitchen, bathroom and shower. all that in such a small portable space and clean set up. i will copy this if i ever have the money to do so lol
