One of the best performances of Buxtehude I've heard. The singers are excellent! the orchestra is excellent! Very musical, without being analytical and stuffy.
A magnificent concert, up to the usual high standards of the Netherland Bach Society. I'm going to listen to more of Buxtehude's music. I haven't paid much attention to him since college. This concert revealed fabulous riches.
Buxtehude is still awaiting for his reconing. As if 400km Bach's covered by foot to meet and study with Master is not enough of a recomendation. A true sonic architect Buxtehude is an immense talent that is curiously underrepresented in Early Music curcuit. It has to change! Stunning mastrery and beauty of his compositions were obvious to Bach. What about us? Hopefully someone like Jos van Veldhoven will pick up the slack in equally compelling performance of this grandiose music.
Many, many thanks for presenting this superb concert of church music from the pre-Bach generation. I've always loved and enjoyed performing Buxtehude's inventive and emotive music - organ and choral. He's a great and refreshing joy to hear. And we can understand why Bach held him in such high esteem. If you haven't yet heard the "Alleluia" (final movement, built on a "ground bass"/basso ostinato) from his cantata "Der Herr ist mit mir" then you must! Thrilling! As always, the NBS excels in everything they do. 👍 ❤️ 🎶 🎶
I've always loved Buxtehude's way of making music sweet yet powerful! As J. S. Bach's 'teacher' and father in law I can hear his influence on Bach's earlier works. I believe he carried D. Buxtehude's influence throughout his musical career....
Haartelijk bedankt!!
One thing is very clear from this, in terms of counterpoint and polyphony it is without a doubt that Bach drew great influence from Buxtehude. Where there seem to diverge is on harmony. Buxtehude's harmony is far simpler but arguably very expressive and lovely. Bach's harmony on the other hand is far more profound, intricate, complex, and full of tension and chromaticism.

Maria Keohane is a freaking goddess.
Can't deny it. Don't want to hear or watch anyone else, right?
I've read that Buxtehude was a hero and teacher of J.S. Bach. Now I understand. Magnificent music!

I'm a couple of minutes into this piece of music that I "poked on suspicion". It's so beautiful and there's well over an hour to go - life is good.
A magnificent concert, up to the usual high standards of the Netherland Bach Society. I'm going to listen to more of Buxtehude's music. I haven't paid much attention to him since college. This concert revealed fabulous riches.

...and subsequent to his pilgrimage, did not Bach write down every note the master performed? Or is this part just legend?
Buxtehude and Bohm etc are underrated
'Sonic architect' - I love that and it's so true.

42:20.. Buxtehude at his best - a music tribute to his Father who passed away, on the chorale "Mit Fried und Freud, ich fahr dahin." Very moving.
I've always loved Buxtehude's way of making music sweet yet powerful! As J. S. Bach's 'teacher' and father in law I can hear his influence on Bach's earlier works. I believe he carried D. Buxtehude's influence throughout his musical career....
Buxtehude was Bach's almost-father-in-law. Bach was offered a position on condition that he marry Buxtehude's daughter. Bach declined.
Danke. Wieder was gelernt. UA-cam bildet doch...
@@TheGloryofMusic As did Handel! :)

Just now catching up on all these NBS 'Buxes; - this one is exceptional!
A crossover between Avrotros and NBS, with van Veldhoven and Keohane? Unbelievably great!
Jan Pel

superbe et parfait, comme d'habitude !
I have not known Buxtehude composed such a brilliant and magnificent work. Thanks for the enlightening upload!
+notaire2 you're very welcome!
I consider Bach and Buxtehude to be the greatest of Baroque composers.
I think Bach and Vivaldi were the two greatest.
For me it is Bach and Handel. But I love Vivaldi and respect Buxtehude, especially considering how much influence Buxtehude had on Bach.
Absolutely stunning!!!!. I was there for the 2016 Festival----wish I were there now!!

I am just a peasant and plebeian and have no clue what you are saying but I think I would agree if I had more gray cells😮
I never knew Buxtheude's music until now. He was a very good composer! Nice to know Bach met him.
I’m fairly certain Handel was one.
42:20 what wonderful music
Un véritable régal. Merci
Wonderful, beautiful music!
wonderful, thank you!
Fabulous fabulous music - and playing... 👍
Wonderful music🍃
Fine and very fine!

Are they using A=465 or 466 Hz for this performance ? ♥

I'll admit that I liked it. Gave me chills. But I see what you're saying.
The recording microphones should have been setup to balance the sound from the luthenists including. I could not hear them.
It seems like Monteverdi has influenced Buxtehude somehow

It´s really laughable that all experts for baroque music let the orchestra stand up. It´s like a cliché without which nobody believes to be acknowledged as an expert. But there´s really no significant difference in playing while sitting.
True, but chairs and stools were considered expensive at the time. No Home Depot for mass produced plastic!
