Defense against a Takedown on the Street

  • An opponent charges you, grabs your legs, lifts you up and slams you into the ground. From there, he can mount you and rain down punches, or just kick you non-stop before you get a chance to recover.
In this video, Nick will show you several ways to protect yourself against this move. Big guys are especially fond of this takedown, but what Nick teaches in the clip will work well with any attacker.
Remember - you want to intercept a takedown as soon as possible. Ideally - before the opponent has a chance to grab you. When the guy charges you, push into his shoulders with your forearms - not your palms (they can slip off)! Push back towards him and slightly down, to keep your balance and break the attacker's momentum. Alternatively, as you push back, step aside to direct the opponent away from you.
Now, if he does grab you, immediately counter with a neck crank. Turn his head to the side or way back, so the attacker loses balance and his momentum dissipates completely. This works even if he has already lifted you off the ground. Crank his neck, punch him in the throat, put your fingers into his eyes - do whatever it takes to interrupt the takedown.
If the opponent goes for a very low grab, you can direct him into the ground and pull a shirt over his head, as Nick demonstrates. From there, you can easily push him away or try to knock the guy out.
As you can see, despite how scary this takedown is, there are several great ways to defend against it in the street. Even if your attacker is bigger then you, by re-directing his momentum you can stay on your feet and fight back - which is all that matters!

Nice vid. This is one of the most common moves I've seen at the start of a fight. Many people automatically go for the tackle for some reason and I believe learning a defense against it is a must.

I'm a classically trained boxer, with pretty good footwork, pretty fast and solid punches, but trying to maintain technique in a street fight is hard because the other person will always want to grab me by my shirt, or whatever the case may be. These videos certainly helped me get a better understanding in what to do in those situations! Thanks! Even though I'm an amateur boxer, this stuff really helped out.

I agree with you.Elbow to the head , spine or back of the neck is the best defence against a low take down. Real self defence has no rules. Take downs are effective in MMA fights because of the rules against hitting the back of the neck, spine etc. In the street such low take downs can get you killed.

Pay attention, people. This is how to do it. Drossos is schooling y'all.
If you have superior skills you can get fancy with strikes to the head and eye-gouges, maybe even trapping... but Drossos' teaches the maximum chance failsafe works-every-time move... so that is what you should do.
Kicks and knees might work.. but then they might just get you dumped on the ground. Your choice.

@ Nick Drossos Defensive Tactics: I've seen more people taken down by way of being more squared up as opposed to you blading yourself with your rear leg back at: 03:00. I've seen a Kenpoist (sparring with ground fighter) just angle off/pivot every time the grappler would try and change angles on him with the single leg takedown attempt (the ground fighter having a hold on his front leg). Would you agree with this stance or do you think it's just a matter of training your mind to see movement, squared up or not? I ask bc I also notice traditional striking schools don't train or haven't upgraded their defense to the shoot and takedown.

Good video clip as always! Myself I like the sprawl because if the opponent is very good and fast the sprawl works most of the time and the opponent will not get a grip on your legs. But in the streets you must get up as quickly as you can after your sprawl. But can you intercept as you show on the videoclip thats fine. Thank you!

    @pedro90 12 років тому

@machinehead110 also have 10 years martial art experience. wrestlers have lightning quick takedowns bro, and are very very accomplished athletes, many people overlook the importance of conditioning with martial arts. anyone there are lots of takedowns that don't involve slamming your knee into the pavement. even good singles, and double legs don't. especially greco roman wrestler who arn't even allowed to grab the legs in matches.

If, God forbid, the attacker does get a grip on you or even lift you up another really effective instant finisher is the double ear slap. Slap both ears at once or slap one while covering the other earhole. He will be stunned for at least a moment and you can finish him easy.

But thats just from messing around ina real situation if you see the opportunity go for it - you want to end the fight as quickly as possible, don't drag it out like you're an MMA fighter (:

You could control the guy better if you have at least one underhook. If you can of course.

@murkleman6 Most of the people fighting on the street doesnt know shit about fighting, they just know stand up game thats all, most of the people who train something doesnt start fights on the street because they know what they are capable of.

@creativecombats i wouldn't call a sprawl totally going to the ground, you stil on the base of the balls of your feet. If theres tons of guys, wouldn't they be clamoring on you the minute he ties you up anyway. plus if he has no friends or alies, whos there to stomp?

Love the channel but it would be better to use people who know how to do a proper take down.

None of that would ever work. Because to stop a tackle your arms gotta be above theirs. Which will never ever happen. They always go for the tackle into a bear hug. They always aim for the chest between the collar bone and biceps.
If someone doesn't then the tackle probably wont work unless they are trained.
So if someone does it you wont see them in advance. You wont be able to get your arms up. They'll probably standing clinch your arms against your chest or worse, on the ground. And also be in another weight class above you.
The odds it will be a judo slam versus a normal takedown are like 90% because the goal is to slam your skull against the rocky ground. Not gain a strategic position.
If you could just do this, cops would never be able to catch any badguys. They'd all be mma champs. But brute force that is beyond you will be what you face and this will break your fingers against a drunk us marine. You will get mugged from a giant crook with or without a gun.
Unless they are at your weight class or below. Which will never happen on the streets then. None of this can stop a takedown.
I mean if someone in your weight class or below does it. Sure this is great. Just a bit of competition.
But what will actually happen is you pull up in a kia forte and some dude in a nissan armada fn slams into you and completely totals your day. Your strategy is completely useless now. Your head has struck the pavement, you're now in the icu.
