  • In this self-defense video, we show you how to defend yourself against one of the most common attacks in the street; the one arm lapel grab. It is indeed one of the most common assaults in the street. Most people fight this way; they grab your shirt with one hand and start punching you with the other hand at the same time. It has been proven to be an effective method of fighting.
Because this way of fighting is frequently used by street thugs, you need to understand it and know how to defend from it.
A great way to train for the "Hockey Fight" or "One Arm Lapel Grab" is to practice through a self-defense drill. For the first part of the drill, your partner needs to come at you with a one arm lapel grab and you need to practice on trapping the punches. Remember to keep your hands up at all times to protect your centerline.
In the second part of the drill, you will be allowed to trap the hand and strike back. You need to block that incoming punch and strike back immediately. Hit your attacker with solid palm strikes to the face.
As we explained in the clip, defending yourself against such an attack will be easier for you if your opponent is shorter than you. Height does play a role in this particular situation because the reach that you will have is going to depend on your opponent's range. The taller he is, the harder it will be for you to counter strike...but it's still doable even if your attacker is much taller than you.

One of the few online lessons that used the word" variables." How tall, short, and in shape is your attacker. Adjust your technique accordingly.

So good! How to defend against this is rarely taught realistically.

I am still figuring out why no one else is teaching this real kind of stuff, i really dont get it. Do al the instructors out there try to kill you with their useless shit? To me nick is the only person who seems to understand how things will look like on the street. Good job man keep it up

Guus check for some Geoff Thompson stuff. He's been a doorman too and has a similar approach.

Glad you said it was hard because, I personally hate being grabbed this way because it tends to be by much bigger guys and that does present difficulties. People pass this over as a standard grab too often because they presume you have the range to be able to strike but often you don't or you feel their stiff arm response will prevent you striking. There is a leap of faith that depends upon them reacting to your attempt tto strike, i.e. that they'll flinch and let go.

Good video. Very similar to what I teach except I usually go for an eye gouge finish. Each to their own. The only thing is please don't ever shoot the video against the windows in future. It is almost impossible to see what is going on with that much back lighting. Keep up the good work.

i think that is better to just flip your body, for example imagine that you are in front of your opponent: if your opponent grabs your right shoulder you can actually flip putting your left leg ahead and keeping your left arm compact to protect yourself.
from that position you can actually defend your head and body and punish your opponent with the right punch because you have halved the distance.
the basics are similiar but doing this i see that always ends in a strenght competition and if your opponent is bigger than you...well...you are still fucked xD
i don't wanna say that what happens in the video is wrong, i think is correct indeed, but i really don't think that it could work against everybody.
what do you think about this?
