I think a lot of people forget that Lars is a massive music fan. I think that's why he is good interviewer as he is genuinely interested in the artist and what they have to say.
That is a great take on the cell policy. I initially thought he simply didn't want people recording the shows and posting them online. He actually wants the cell phones put away so the crowd isn't distracted and more focused so he can feed of their energy. I can respect that. As a fan in the crowd I hate when you are standing in general admission and there is a sea of people in front of you with their hands held up holding their I-Phone taking crappy shaky video that they will probably never look at again.
I never got the point of recording live shows with an inferior device like a mobile phone. The video looks like it has been recorded from miles away (E.G try to make a fancy picture of the moon with ur phone, it doesn't even come close to represent the thing u see) and the audio sounds like a tasmanian devil plugged in to a distortion pedal. All the above would be a non argument were it not that at most big gigs there are about a dozen professional camera operators and a heap of audio techs doing a very good job at recording the whole thingy. I'd rather experience/feel the vibe and actually enjoy the show instead of seeing it through my fuckall inch sized mobile phone screen.
Jeroen Leeuwerke exactly, and why pay so much for a ticket to watch a it live through a tiny screen? Bloody annoying if you’re stuck behind someone doing it.
I feel the same way. Why go to a concert that your so excited to go to and who you're seeing then all of a sudden you whip your stupid phone out. How in the he'll can you enjoy the concert when you most likely are having to spend all your time and energy the wrong way by concentrating on trying to get the best video. Hey why not just go their, keep the dam phone away and actually have a great time watching the band that you paid to see. I'm so done with everyone no matter what happens or goes on just takes their phone to take a video of whatever is happening even in serious situations. I'll just never get it. I don't care about my phone at all. The only reason I have one is bc I have a daughter so I need one for school calls, doctor's, ect. But other than that I might just come on you tube here and their to watch some video's or listen to some music and that's really it. And if you actually read this whole thing thank you for listening to my rant. 😉 Hope y'all have a great day...xoxo
I see it as a respect thing. Can you imagine everyone in the audience at a show in the 80's with those 2 foot long camcorders? No it would be effing ridiculous.
Lars' presumptive questions usually seem to get a "Yes" response. He's been there and done that so he's good at putting himself in his guest's position. Musicians' shoptalk. He's good at this.
It's just such a good idea to let two awesome musicians talk with each other as a radio show! Makes up so much more interesting conversations, because they ask different questions..
@@dougdevine5117 Lars is a huge part of the success of Metallica and he’s come up with legendary parts, he’s not the best drummer in the world but let’s not pretend like jack white is an amazing guitarist either. They’re both fantastic songwriters
I went to the show on Wednesday night. It was awesome. I tried to smuggle my phone in. NOPE! Metal detectors and wands. But once you got inside and couldn't access the phone it was great. No one had a phone. Everyone was looking around. Visiting. Just chilling out and enjoying the evening.
It didn’t really make a difference. The audience still stood around not even nodding their heads. I was expecting the pit to be even a bit more lively but I guess people don’t have the energy to do much other than stand.
If you go to a live concert, being there watching a performer perform live is part of the engagement. He has every right to say respect this process and the fact that he's performing live and limit anything that distracts from this. I have nothing against taking a picture or a short live video to commemorate the moment but watch the performer and not your phone during the show. I wish more concerts and performers would do this.
As a photographer, having shot jack a few times on stage, I think all concerts should have the ‘3 song rule’ for fans like they do for us in the press pits. The first three songs you can take pictures after that. It’s a no go! You will be asked to leave. I think people do want a few shots on their phones to remember the night but for both the artist and the fans it can get in the way with really experiencing the show. Ideally no phones and enjoy the show! But at the bigger venues that would seem like nice compromise. 🤷🏻♂️
Audience--stage. energy feed back. Jack white!! Your carry so much Wisdom. Bravo on the last record it's fantastic. Artistic exploration.artistic expression.and artistic evolution. cheers
I am so stoked to hear that... I don't know if this will become a thing or not but it's been KILLING MY VIBE at shows the past few years... I always wonder how the musicians feel, too - from legends playing at MSG to 300 ppl punk shows on the $7 lower stage at Black Cat in DC. I wish it was a thing... I love how Jack White explains it.
I went to a Jack White show during that tour. The phone ban was the best thing ever! 1: The crowd was way more into it 2: The band was way more into it 3: I wasn't distracted by dozens of screens in front of my face It was the best concert experience I've had in possibly the last 8-10 years for that reason alone. I wish every band did this.
Saw Jack in Toronto at a no phone show and it was awesome. Strangers socializing and just enjoying the moment. Not to mention the added entertainment value of watching people try and find each other without their phones.
My daughter and I were at your Vancouver concert last night...we both said we realized we had a constant smile on our face the entire time! No cell phone felt weird but loved the freedom! Thank u for your musical genius, Jack White, won't be forgetting that performance anytime soon.
I absolutely love how they shoot it all in black and white........it just adds something. I think this is the best format being that you have 2 musicians talking too each other, asking questions, etc!
Great interview. I love the no cell phone thing. I think it's amazing how Jack doesn't use setlists and I'm so glad he came up with the cell phone idea instead of resorting to setlists! He is preserving something beautiful. And to 4:55, yesss, always heavier ❤ and/or bluesier. Hoping he tours again soon.
I saw Jack White in Seattle 2 weeks ago and it was great that everyone had their phones locked up. I wish he played the Moore or the Paramount but he still put on a phenomenal show. Jack White is really an artist and truly cares about music.
Stacey Wiebe tool does the same thing. This tour they're letting you record and take pictures during the last song.. it's so nice seeing no phones in the air
Stacey Wiebe just saw The Raconteurs in Indy last week NO phones they had a company put them in special bags the size of your phone that keeps you from using your phone and was actually very pleasant. Best show of my life man
Me too. Nothing more obnoxious than trying to watch a show you’ve paid good money for and then not being able to see the show because of a zillion glowing screens in front of you.
I saw JW last night. His phone ban was fantastic. Seeing the phone screens at concerts really bugs me it is such a distraction. Jack puts on such a high energy show. Love the guy.
I really enjoy seeing the humble side of Lars. I understand the Rock Star moments too! Cool show Lars. Been following the epis. They get better and better. Cheers!
I just saw Jack at the opening of his tour in Detroit at the LCA. I'm all for the cell phone lockdown. I had no problem with it, and no one else seemed to also. It was a fantastic show, by the way! I would go see Jack again, and ditch the phone. Rock on guys!
EXCELLENT INTERVIEW ! People actually relating to one another! And as a vocalist myself, I can completely agree! As an artist and their audience this is so important. You do truly bounce back and forth off of each other, keeping that energy going. It is like the late great MJ used to say, it was near to a spiritual experience up their on stage, with all of his band, himself and the fans relating to one another in such a manner. VERY, Very smart idea on many levels ! I'm a very outgoing person , so I do personally try to make it a challenge to always get more eye contact, and conversation with the ppl around me in my day by day routine. Try to get them more engaged. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but imho. If we don't work on this collectively, (with all the new tech hitting us left and right), eventually we will ALL suffer as a society. Our community will be dumbed down to emotionless walking around zombies, paying zero attention to our real world going on around us! And we do already miss so very many Phenomenal things as it is, these days!!. Great Interviewer and Great Guest!! Love it!
Actually loved the no cell phone policy when jack white performed in Ottawa a few months ago. Not only connected with his music more but got a chance to chat with other concertgoers seated near us. Great idea. Great interview!

I watched Jack White perform in Las Vegas 2 years ago. We locked our cell phones in the bags and it was a GREAT show! I've been a huge fan of Jack White since the beginning of White Stripes BUT I was shocked by how amazing he is live. He is a rock n roll mad man genius!!!
I wish this would be the case on all concerts. I was on a show on this tour, it was incredible. When I'm on a concert and I see phones I just want to shout with those people. Not a long ago Robert Fripp was so close to send an audience out from the room because of they phone. I loved that.
First time I saw Green Day, Billy Joe mentioned during the show "if you're looking at me through a screen, you're not really seeing me"... Made me think about how rock stars who were around before smart phones must hate it how crowds pull out their phones and aren't engaged. Made me stop pulling mine out and just enjoy the show 👍

agreed, much respect for the way he lets Jack speak and doesn't interrupt,as MANY interviewers do.
Its because he respects Jack White
Yeah. But then the toothpick
Isn't disliking Lars like a stale meme?

Just play and don’t worry about it. Having bouncers walking around policing phone use is much worse than a few people texting or recording.
At jacks gigs, you physically cant get to your phone unless you leave the arena. Theres no bouncers policing
