Wellllll!! What a nice job Mike!!
I like that you took the effort to make sure the soffit was clean. I had to go up on a ladder to clean a lot of places on my soffit once it was dry. Also where it butted up against the Hardi Board as well as the door and window trims. What a giant PIA. I took photos and asked the contractor what he thought about delivering a house that looked like that. He was definitely embarrassed, but very professional. That was in May and now all of the elevated decking I have is enclosed (where needed) with custom made cedar lattice panels that all open with all the hardware hidden. The white soffit under the deck from the main floor over the walkout basement is also all cedar now instead. He asked if I wanted anything else wrapped in Cedar and I really couldn’t think of anything. He asked if I do woodwork with cedar and I said I did. I now have an area of some very neatly stacked cedar 2x4s, 2x6s and 3/4” x 6” tongue and groove planks, almost all 10 footers and some 8 foot boards. I would say it is more than a pickup load. He had it on a trailer!! Hahaha. That is a very decent recovery from a General Contractor that made a small mistake. That was the only complaint I had on delivery. I had planned on doing the cedar work myself! He did a much better job than I would have. I don’t take anything for nothing and he refused any payment so we both made a $500 donation to the local food bank. He laid out a challenge to other local businesses and received some very good free advertising. I think ahead almost always!! hahaha
You would never leave any contractor dealing with such an issue, you clearly take way too much pride in your work!! It is very fun to watch, especially when you get it all done!! This is skilled labour and a bit of artistry. Every mason should try to do what you did above the window, but you definitely made it look good! They did at my place but I have seen some places where they didn’t and. It looks so boring. Again,,,,,well done!!
I’m thinking there may be nothing that you can’t do!! This is why you have been successful. Hope the damn rain settles down!!

I made all my own stones out of white concrete and perlite. I made the forms so it fits together like a puzzle in a 4x8 section to include corners. Since i used perlite the stones were super light. All my stones have a quarter inch gap so it looks really clean. Was super easy to grout using a gun. The only thing different was i used liquid nails construction adhesive on the back of each stone. I just made a circle and pressed it one. The vacuum held it in place perfectly. If anyone ever tries to remove the stones, it will take the siding with it lol.

Colin seems to be fitting in pretty well. How old did you say he was?
Slinging that mud looks easy when you do it. But, I can attest to the fact that there is a lot more to it than just pitching it on and smearing it around.
When I was 17 my best buddy and his dad were building their own brick home. His dad was a lifelong carpenter. My buddy had been tagging along for severally years.
Me? I’d grown up on the farm building wooden fences, cattle feeders, hog troughs and the like. I could drive a nail pretty well and cut a board reasonably straight with a handsaw. So, I started coming over to help them.
By the end of the summer they were ready for bricks. These two old-old timers showed up in this beat up Studebaker pickup. One was short and skinny… like 80 lbs soaking wet! The other was average height and shaped like a barrel.
They brought a beat up bag of tools, a couple of mortar hods, a mortar box and a hoe. That was it…. I was to be their mixer and gopher.
I thought, this is gonna be a piece of cake… I mean, how much work could these two old geezers get done anyway?
About two hours into it, they were waiting for me to mix my third or fourth batch… and grumbling because I couldn’t keep them supplied in bricks.
I was sweating up a storm and trying my best to figure out how to speed up. Joe, the little guy came over and grabbed the hoe… he stroked the mortar about 10 times then walked to the other end of the box and pulled it back to him. It was totally mixed…I was astounded. I would have spent 20 minutes just getting the water to stop pooling.
I learned right there that it ain’t how hard you mix mortar… it’s how you do it. I decided to pay more attention and spend less time riding on my high horse!
Maybe in KY I can tell you about the lesson they gave me in buttering bricks!

@@DIRT-BOSS I'm very appreciative of your quick response. After doing a fireplace with multicolored river rock many years ago, until you do it you can't imagine how much effort it takes to make something look random. That was the hardest part. I'm currently looking into stone veener for the lower half of an exterior wall. It currently has dry rotted wood siding that butts up to about 8" of stucco at ground level. Do you have any videos I can reference to prepare the surface? Thanks.

Question is there any kind of flashing where stone meets soffit. Is it not necessary? I have an A Frame so there is a lot of it.

No flashing if it's covered by a soffit

      @@DIRT-BOSS thank you.
I took off the vinyl siding. Jchannel still on. Was thinking of leaving it as a trim. What do you think and also what about the top and bottom of windows. Name or type of flashing needed.

@@3TheJesusCodeWebBooks Yes we always butt up to j channel as far as flashing if the windows aren't pre-flashed like newer windows then yes you would need to flash them either with zip tape or some type of flashing

    Hey Mike,
With field stone, is there a laying process? Or just a random pattern?

Do you have to wet the wall concrete to promote adhesion?
