Been doing stucco for 15 years and a professional with the tools mud etc, and when I went to learn brick and stone I found that the masons were just straight haters and knew with a few tips I'd make them look dumb so thank you for this, sometimes the details is all a guy needs.
Fan blowing the cut dust, GENIUS!
As a DIYer I've been doing my research on this type of dry stacking of stone. After watching many instructional videos this one answered a lot of questions for me. Much appreciate your time with the pro-tips.
Your Welcome
Just started working with masonry and your video helped. My boss brags about me. My work is sought after now. Thank you for your video
I love people from upstate NY because they always have time for a cup of coffee. That should be a world standard.
Lol yes sir must have !
Beautiful ! I LOVE WORKING WITH STONE AND ROCK !!!!!!
Nice video!! Very instructional thank you! Nice to see a professional at work that’s not afraid to teach other people
Im doing this for the first time, took a break and watched your vid. great tips ,thx!!!
Thanks Good luck
Great video just watching to refresh my memory on how to do it. It’s been 16+/- years when I did this as a kid with my dad.
Awesome good luck
Nice job Boss! Consider spraying the backside of the stone with water so the mortar stays wetter. Cheers. Dude, I just noticed your clever use of the floor blower at 9:12. Brilliant! Now I have use for my blower, even when cutting Hardi Plank. Thanks!
Awesome thanks
The engineered dust control with the fan is genius
Natural teacher. Fantastic
Thanks
Great video.
Unlike a lot of contractors, the little details you put in are very helpful, and important.
Thanks
Thanks
Thanks for your time. It looks great 👌 🇦🇺
Did my first wall after watching this video...Looks amazing. Thank you so much for all the details and direction!
You're welcome sir!
This guy is GREAT - I wish I could have had him do my work !!!!
I can It just cost money ! 😁
I found this very helpful as I'm a diy'er. I'm in the process of completing my first stone project, adding veneer to the bottom of 3 columns on my front porch. It's taking longer than I thought but I'm learning a few things as I go. I appreciated the tips you provided in this video and they have helped me understand the process better. Thank you for posting.
You're welcome & Good luck
Little tip ……I like to work from top down, 1- u know for sure its not sitting on top of a stone and its a better build now 2- they stay clean no mud will fall down and get on your stone like that happens from working bottom to up, trust me, after doing this for so many years I seen it all and nothing worse trying to wire brush dry mortar smears off stone to collect the final check, Start from top and work down, your welcome
Please subscribe so you could teach me along the way!
I used the same type (dry stacked) of cultured stone on a fireplace wall in my living room. About 10' wide, 2' deep. I'd never done this before and it was a trip. 54 hours very well spent. I used 13 real stones from the property and sprinkled them around. Most guests find 2 or 3, that's how real they look.
Very sharp - looks like a natural old stone fence in some farmer's field. I have some experience with this stuff and your tips & techniques are all right on the money, Dirt Boss. Very creative workaround for the rain.
Thanks Dale so I take it you're in the construction industry also what's your specialty?
Thanks Mike
@@DIRT-BOSS No, Mike, not directly, but have done lots of various remodeling work on my own and friends houses over the years so had to do lots of research plus learned by making plenty of mistakes which I hopefully learned from, LOL. I'm retired now.
Thanks for the tips and keep up the good work.
Haven’t even got any stone to lay ,
But I watched 2 min of your video I was hooked .
Thanks so much ,you are very good at your craft !!
I enjoyed it so much ,and I did subscribe .
Appreciate it
Awesome! Thank you!
Two things! First l like using a mortar board for easier access rather than a bucket. Second l spread my stone out so l can see the piece l need. Piling them up like that chips n scratches the finish off them
To each its own we've done many different ways as you just stated this is just the way this one was done
@@DIRT-BOSS yes sir! Liked the video we never stop perfecting our craft. Keep up the good work bro!
Mashed potato analogy for mortar consistency is the best I’ve heard. Some guys say a plastic consistency. Never understood what that would be.
Yes Sir!
Thanks, your video was great. I've done this before but you helped me realize things that would make me more knowledgeable
Thanks
I wish titles to videos would be more specific about Stone vs Phony Stone.
Personally, I don't consider phony stone to be content that can accurately be used as a means to teach stone masonry.
The response I might get is that it's veneer stone. Quite a bit of people assume that the workflow is the same for all types of veneer work, but it's not.
As an example, I've worked with granite, courtside, and right now I'm working with black basalt.
These stones are significantly harder to cut than the precast cement that all phony stone is composed of.
Furthermore, phony stone is a bit of a joke. It's got something like 10 mm of rock textured color, in the attempt to make it look like a stone, but it's not even comparable. It's a cheap product with cheap longevity. I've seen plenty of phony stones pop off of a wall and land on a car's windshield or something, over the course of even just a few months after it's installation, as well. It also weathers that rock color and texture extremely quickly, in comparison to actual stone.
It may be cheaper for the client. But I anticipate that within 50 years or so, people are going to wise up on this inferior product, and in the end, it'll hurt the Stone Masonry trade. It'll give Stone Masonry a stigma that "it doesn't last long". Leading to people being unsure if it actually adds equity to their property. And seeing as most people aren't aware of the and the differences between the two, this seems highly likely.
I sometimes get clients comming over to me saying "Oh wow. You mean Stone Masons still use chisels?" And yes, they do...
Raking the joints is probably what I should do with my mosaics too. Especially when the thinset is different color than the grout.
💯
Beautiful…I love that stone!
Thanks!
Looks nice, but I always start from the top down, it keeps all the stone cleaner from mortar dropping if done from bottom up
I hear what you're saying but that stone you can't start from the top she will fall it's not like fieldstone
cement board and thinset actually does work ...
also set your cill's up before hand then lay the stone up to it ...
dye thinset or mortar to match color of stone ... few tips for guys
use the grinder on a cutting table not free hand can snatch to easy
Thanks bud
Great tutorial Boss. I plan to do a small stone job (about 200 sq. ft.) and really appreciate you taking the time to do this video. Great job!
Welcome
Watching this video and hearing you wanting to get to 150 subscribers and seeing 280k is awesome, keep up the primo work
Thanks man
I’m never going to do this - but good video… now i know how it’s done. Did not realize how labor intensive the process is. Thanks for your informative video. Looks great!!!
Thanks Tim
Thank you SO much for taking the time to show this process. Your work is amazing, and I hope my project turns out even half as well. Have an amazing day!!!
You are so welcome!
Your corners are tipped down 😚
Best teaching video yet! good job!

Hey man! Thank you, I've done a project years ago, and ready to do another. You gave me some great direction and pointers.
Awesome welcome
stunning. this is absolutely what I needed to see. now I am confident I can do this. thanks Boss.
Good luck
Ive found buzzing the edges to knock off the manufacture slag makes them fit tighter and nicer. Not so much of a problem with this ledgestone stuff but the square stack needs it for good tight fit.
Yup agreed
WOW! What fun it is. Start the job, let RAIN change the plan, build portable shelter from the rain so you can still work. Start stone work again and I could hear the rain on the plastic. Not many easier days for you bud! Sonny (CT)
Its always s challenge in the Northeast!
Thanks Sonny
This is super cool! It’s your cousin, in case you don’t recognize my married name. Excellent content, Mike!
Hey Jen thanks this video was when I first started UA-cam I was still kind of awkward on the camera LOL
Good job. A couple pointers for you. Rather then cut with a grinder go get a couple pair of horse hoof snip. Attach 1/2 gas pipe to handles trust me it works great. If you still like your grinder make sure to never have a straight cut especially with ledgestone. you can take the back of a stone and rough up and round the edge of that stone you cut. I did fireplaces 80% of the time so i used a grout bag to finish up because people get so close.
Hey thanks EJ I appreciate the tip
@@DIRT-BOSS I don't miss doing it anymore. I learned to appreciate the skin on the tips of my fingers. It did make me feel good finishing a job and taking a picture. I am 50 now and don't think i could do it daily anymore. People don't know how hard the job really is. Good luck to you.
Great demonstration Dirt Boss..I mean concrete boss.
Thanks buddy
Great video. Just spent the morning really frustrated. After watching this video I'm ready to go!
I'm glad it helped you out please help me out and subscribe Thanks for watching!
Excellent demonstration !
Thanks for watching
GREAT LOOK, LOOKS GOOD WITH THE WOOD SIDING. NICE JOB GUYS ‼️ ‼️ Vinny 🇺🇸
Thanks great video with information i NEEDED!
Nice DIY thank you sir very informative.
Welcome
Your instructions were clear thank you
You're welcome Ed Thanks for watching
We snap a line for the sills then hang the corners then make level lines off of every corner
Exactly That's the best way !
Might have been a little more difficult but you made it look easy and nice. I liked it.
Thanks
Great simple tutorial...keep up the good work..
Thank you
Good knowledge for a novice and great tutorial.
Thank you sir!
Looks great!!!
Thanks
Love your videos man! I’m an aspiring mason from NY and I’ve had some vocational training in masonry, but non as good and clear as your videos keep em up
Thanks Frank! Much appreciated!
Good advice. Thanks for sharing you video.

Thanks buddy appreciate it 👍🏼
Thanks for the video, mate
Welcome I got a couple more in the playlist for masonry if you want to check them out
been doing this is it came out in the 70 i alsway start fromm the top my scratch coat is the same color of my groung so when i put my stone on i use my mortar as the same colro of my grouth this way o dont have to come back and grout it and there is no color on my stones save a lot of labor
I hear you we used to do them like that too.. this particular stone needs to be laid from the bottom because they stick further out than the surface on the wall And there is no joints between.
I keep a spray bottle handy too.
Good tip
I've watched other guys install that fake stone but they didn't utilize the smalls the way you did. It looks great. I think You Tubers like you are giving Hollywood a run for the money. I'm 68 years old and living in a retirement home and obviously I'm not going to be installing any fake stone but this is much more interesting and even captivating than anything out of Tinsel Town lately. I can't stand (so called) secular TV nowadays. Too much almost nudity, nasty talk and sexuality (which I think is one of the worst things) on the TV nowadays. I hardly ever turn mine on anymore but I think I'm going blind from looking at this small screen. Great work. Later😎🇺🇸🐘
Hey thanks Ray I appreciate that yeah Hollywood has gone downhill
Hi - Thank you for such a great instruction vid. I feel like I can do it myself!!! Love that stone. would you happen to remember what its called and the company? Looking at cultured stone southern ledgestone wolf creek, kinda looks the same. Thanks in advance
Good informative vid !
Thanks
Always start from bottom .should be a rail where the wood meets the the sill. Funny
Way to go dirt boss ! Thank you for explaining everything in detail! Very important about details! That didn’t look that hard ! How would you price a job like that or any other job ? Thank you Benny .
Pricing goes by square foot Thanks
EXCELLENT!!!!
Got me. Subscribed
Thanks
Appreciate the tutorial!!
You're welcome please subscribe in return !
Do you ever wet the wall when your laying on dry scratch coat? We use a pump up sprayer and mist the wall. Usually only do it in summer when its hot or in direct sun. Keeps the mud from drying too fast and losing that suction but any DIYers don't over do it or you'll watelog the wall and nothing will stick.
No I do not keep the mud wet you'll have no issues
Which Eldorado Stone product is this? Love the style and color! TIA
I can't remember 5 years ago
Nice work
Thank you
I'm looking for ideas to give my house some curb appeal and also cover my ugly and in some areas chipped slab foundation. Maybe 1 foot or so high around 3 sides of the house. Would this be an economical solution or a money pit and a nightmare? Any suggestions are most welcomed. Also great job, building looks great.
Yes you can do that we do it often just prep the foundation with pressure washer
Awesome work!
Thanks man appreciate it
Can you reseal cultured stone to give it that wet look again? What do you recommend? Our house is 20!yrs old I feel like the stone needs resealed. Definitely like the look of it when it gets when from hose or rain. It is faded.
Yes go to your local hardware store pick up masonry sealer you could spray it on they have different sheen so get the one you want. I don't recommend gloss finish though.
Amazing how different things are called from one area to another. Slicker...here it is a tuck pointer. Curious why you use a bucket instead of a mud board.
We call them talkers also.. the bucket is easier for me cleaner neither.. we do use mud pans on bigger jobs.. Thanks
@@wx4sno yeah My uncle used to call it a striker
Nice work fella
Thanks
No flashing going over the sill? Moisture gets behind the stone veneer, freezes and pops off the stone.
Yes there is flashing there It was put on afterwards on top of the sill.. just as you said
I dont think the flashing is needed with watertable sills there designed to flow the water away from the wall and have an edge on bottom lip that water drips off of ...
Good video. Thanks.
Thanks
great work!
What is the step before you started your video? Is that sheet rock? Or plywood, moisture paper, then,, ?
In the description is the video I have the video before that it was before I got organized on UA-cam lol here's another one
ua-cam.com/video/GgVSd602Lf8/v-deo.html
Amazing
Thanks
Keep hearing about "weep holes." did some reading, but my diy terminology doesn't allow me to fully understand with the reading. If possible some expert can explain what are those, and when do we need them? and How would be great. Thanks
Weep holes are just a little gadget that goes down at the bottom of the stone to let moisture out.. We typically don't install them
@@DIRT-BOSS thanks for the reply
Great tips! Great work!
Thanks
A dirt boss, what about taking Stone to an opening that's not trimmed out.
For example my fireplace is what I'm doing, just leave cut-ends exposed or what?
Nice
If you live anywhere with even the slightest freeze thaw cycle do not put stack stone on the outside of the home. And I always start at the top and work down to keep the stone as clean as posible.
we live in Montana, see it everywhere
I've yet to find a video showing the actual prep of the surface prior to installing the stone. I know they use some type of metal lath and mortar as a base but don't have the particulars. Any ideas?
Yes I put a link in the description of the video prior to this one My videos had got messed up It was when I first started UA-cam I was putting them all together check it out
@@DIRT-BOSS Sorry, but not a very good video of this part of the work. First, any actual prep doesn't occur until about 8-1/2 minutes in (of a 13 minute video) and then it doesn't show anything on the wrapping/lath install just the mudding of the scratch coat. Quikcrete has a much better video of the entire process. Thanks for trying.
@@vickanid1862 lol sorry about that here's one I did last year..
ua-cam.com/video/2Z0nsv0C2p0/v-deo.html
I know this is an older video but where do you get stone veneer like that? I'm looking to do a backsplash with individual stones like this but everything I'm finding is just pre-made panels.
Any building Supply just Google cultured stone
Hello! How do I install my stone over existing old stucco wall? My stucco guy recommended a sealer… what you think?
Great vid thanks boss
Your welcome !
This guy is Very informative, great tutorial.
Is there a certain distance between his level lines?
No you can put the lines as needed Thanks for watching
Really nice job! Thank you for sharing your work!
You're welcome!
Kit I have doesn’t contain these blocks with 90 degree angles. What’s the scope on not having corners and all just flat
I thought I covered that in the video it just looks less real
Mike what do you put on the wall before you start putting the rocks on ?
There's several things you could use Mason board or wire lath.. look in the description there is part one in this video
This is my first time so I've got the same kind of stone going on my fireplace and it is difficult I've tried to lay it out on the ground very difficult.
yeah you can't lay it out on the ground You just got to do it Make sure you got enough level lines just as a visual reference take your time you'll get it! Please subscribe
@@DIRT-BOSS thanks buddy I subscribed made my list for everything else going to the store.
What is my water to mortar ratio please
In other videos I noticed they wet the scratch coat before installing. Should it be left dry so the water drawing (towards the SC) process you explained in this video will work better?
I never wet the scratch coat.. I don't know why other Masons say to do that I know when it rains at night and we go there in the morning and it's wet the stones do not stick as well Hope that helps please subscribe!
@@DIRT-BOSS THANKS I will!
