    Exactly what I needed running a klx450r and top end was near 100 mph,but fairly tight stuff I was having to feather 2nd to avoid stalling once on the throttle it pulled fine,but in this case I am dropping 1 tooth in the front even though 1st will be very short,2nd won't require as much clutch work.
    Funny I asked 3 diffent mechanics and got 3 different answers

    2020 Yamaha WR450F, street legal enduro. Stock sprockets 13/50. Went to 13/48, still too slow on streets. Tried to install 15/43, but front sprocket is too big diameter and hits plastic chain guards. Will have to just stick with 13/43, or try 14/43. Basically a Super Moto with 32% higher top end, and 32% lower torque. Best advice: just buy a street bike and leave the dirt bike close to stock.

    Imho changing one tooth either way on the rear sprocket isnt gonna make a huge difference on most 450s. On the other hand, going up or down one tooth on the front sprocket alone makes most stock bikes either bog or scream. Going up or down 2 teeth on the rear while also going the same direction on the front by one tooth can offer great results. It gets you the equivalent of a half a tooth on the front. Do the math, it works sweet if you have both 13 and 14 tooth fronts with a 51 tooth rear you'll have climbing gears 3.92 and desert gears 3.64 with just a simple front gear swap anytime you like!

    i have a 2013 CRF450R ( crf 2013-2016 motor are mellow around 51hp). original gearing was 13T/48T it was ok in MX but in woods i stall to much . now i change to 12T/48T am pretty happy with it but i have ordered 50T rear and going to try 13T/50T .

    HI ,
    thanx for your videos :) they are useful for me specially how to kick start 4t EFI :D it really save my energy and time .
    i do appreciate if you can answer one of my beginner questions : what dose it mean when you change the front sprocket and people say : the first gear become taller/shorter !? how dose it affect your riding ... i appreciate if you answer my comment or make a video about it.

    • @dirtniron
      @dirtniron  7 років тому +2

      Amir, shorter the gear gets you have more torque and lower top speed, you need to shift sooner if the gear is short. Lets say you have 10 000 rpm on short gear and you go 45 mph, if you have 10 000 rpm on long gear you would go maybe 55 mph.
      if you want your bike to be very responsive and pull very hard then you want to make your gears shorter. So if you change front sprocket and you drop a tooth, you are going to gain torque, responsive throttle but your top speed would be lower.
      it all depends what riding style you have and what kind of riding you do. you can play with it and see how it feels. For example if you ride slow technical stuff and your bike is stalling a lot then you should make your gears shorter, either add tooth on rear sprocket or drop tooth on front.
      hope that helps, take care!

    i have seen the video and understood what you are saying but you have not covered a problem that i am facing with my 4 stroke ktm the 250 sxf. i dont have the specs of my front and rear sprocket but question is on more fundamentals. having more bottom is good for trails but my problem is that everytime after a turn i see a small straight patch i can't open my throttle as my bike just slides out (the surface is slightly hard packed). i feel for this reason i should make my ration taller and go with bigger front tooth(if its 13 then put 14) so i won't have so much sudden bottom end and the power delivery will be gradual, what do you think?

      Ride it stock first and see how you like it. Remember in the gearing, if you make your gear longer (smaller rear sprocket or bigger front sprocket) you will loose little bit of torque. You need to find that happy medium. Maybe start with one more tooth on front

    • @dirtniron

      it depends which direction you go, 1 tooth smaller in front will give you more torque less top speed.
      adding one tooth to front and rear doesnt make much sense unless you are fine tuning the ratio. adding one tooth front and back is going opposite direction
      add to the front = more speed less torque (taller gears)
      add to the rear = less speed more torque (shorter gears)

    • @dirtniron
      @dirtniron  8 років тому

      bigger on the front and smaller on the rear, try to add one tooth on front. You need speed on the street not that much of a low rpm torque. Front sprocket is around $20, so I would definitely try to get bigger front first, I know i say in the video to change rear first, but for supermoto its a different story.

    I have a 2011 ktm 150 xc, it has a 13t front and 50t rear. I do alot of enduro riding and track, it doesnt rip as fast through the gears as I would like, but it still has a good top speed. Recommendations?

    I'm using a wr450f 52t/13t and the bike wants to rip my arms off. I'll try a 15t or even a 16t to get a little more control for cheap. Any suggestions? I'm pro downhill rider but It's my first dirt bike so I need to gain confidence.

    • @dirtniron
      @dirtniron  6 років тому

      thats too much torque, looks like stock gearing on wr450 is 13/50, I would try 14/50 . If you dont want to spend too much then get primary drive steel sprockets they are durable and cheap. but also maybe 15 - 52 would do the trick. I just think that 52 is too big for WR.

    You sound like you know what your doing so my question would be this: I was looking for a KTM125 SX For my son to take to the track but I have been offered a KTM125 EXC for my CRF450r. The EXC is 2015 My 450 is 2014. If you could explain the pros and cons to me although the exc dose not have all the lights etc on it. Would it be a good idea to swap for the EXC Or should I just wait for SX? Fast answer would be great as I have the guy waiting for a swap today:) Cheers in advance any info would be great. TTEA

    • @dirtniron
      @dirtniron  5 років тому +1

      exc has wide ratio tranny, I am pretty sure its short first gear and tall 4,5,6.. its made for off road so the whole machine is tuned for that. It has different valving in suspension for more plush ride and I think the power is little more tamed too. It is possible to ride that bike on the track as well, but sx would feel better. If you are going to ride track only I would rather wait and get sx. thats what I would do.hope that helps

    hi I bought a 09 kx450f a couple months back and the bike looks like it's been a track bike but my type of riding is tight single trails really rough terrain and I seam to be stalling the bike out alot. when I'm on more open trails the bike rips and there's no issues I was thinking about changing my sprockets but not sure Wich way to go

    • @dirtniron
      @dirtniron  7 років тому

      Jarred Boucher you need to go either bigger on rear or smaller on front sprocket. bike will have more torque it will be snappier from the bottom and your top speed would be lower. if you want bigger change then drop one tooth on front sprocket, it's also cheaper, you can get good front sprocket for around $25. see how you like it. or if you want to take small steps then go one more tooth on rear sprocket. don't forget to cover your clutch all the time, have that finger on it and be ready to pull it in one it gets too technical and bike wants to die. sometimes you just need to feather it a bit. good luck!

      14 - 50 will give you shorter gears, faster to rev, more torque and less max speed. good for the track I think. give it a shot, you can always go back. Maybe you can even try 13 - 48, front sprockets are cheaper

      both options will make it less responsive, it will be easier to ride, 14 50 will make bigger difference, try that one firs,t, front sprockets are cheap. There is one more thing you can do to tame it down, there is a product called throttle tamer, it will make your throttle more manageable. I didnt try it myself but heard good things about it.
