@@Coolrockndad You must have been too stoned then to remember how much The Mighty Zep kicked both Queen and The Who's Ass in a live show. I saw both and Zep blew them away. Especially indoors. You cannot compare Brian May and Pete Townsend in a live or studio session to Jimmy Page. I mean you can but you may be the only one.

@@Fritzw75 I love Zeppelin. I bought their first LP way before the 2nd one (I'm sure you know what I mean when I say that). I bought all 6 of the "In Through The Out Door" Lp's so I would have all the different covers (I'm sure you know what I mean by that as well). I have all their LP's. Saw them at the Garden. I also saw Pink Floyd, The Stones, Elvis, Elton John, The Eagles, Van Halen and Springsteen, all live. You name the band I saw them live. When I see one of these lists that proclaim, "Who's the best act live" Zeppelin is not at the top, close but not at the top. Sometimes The Beatles are at the top which is a total joke IMO. Live to me means not just how great the music sounds but the stage presents, the energy on stage, the action, the band connecting with the fans by going out into the audience etc. etc. With that said Springsteen outshines them all live IMO. .... By the way I wasn't stones at any of the concerts I've seen. Were you?

you make a good point about song length. today they immediately force "the hook" and before you know it the song is over. back in the day they would slowly draw you in on an emotional level and keep you invested and when the song is over they leave you wanting more.
Plant was often referred to as "the golden god" and yes zeppelin had the ladies lined up for miles

I especially prefer Led Zeppelin playing their music, but heart did do an exceptional job, far better then others have. Of course they had an orchestra & choir, otherwise maybe not quite as epic. I think the emotions from the three, was more so, because of Jason preforming. Plant had invited him, & Jason told him he couldn’t make it, Plant is Jason’s Godfather.

You’re a little right in the duration of the song having had an impact on this song’s popularity. There is a whole generation of high schoolers for whom Stairway was always the last dance of the high school dances. The local DJ would always be under strict orders to end the music at midnight or 11 or whatever hour. The supervising teacher would be happy as long as the last song, usually a slow song for the couples to slow dance to, started about five to four minutes before the hour, then they’d be able to start cleaning and closing up. Only this song would last past the hour and the DJ’s and kids would have proudly put one past “the man”. The teachers didn’t really care too much because the last couple of minutes would start rocking and the couples would naturally start to separate and instead start rocking out on their air guitars. It was also an easy way for the supervisors to pick out which couples were getting too hot and heavy in their embrace to notice the music was not appropriate to slow dance to. Anyway, mix memories of high school dances, embraces, and hormones, and you have the greatest rock song ever.

There are commonalities in many of the songs that are generally regarded as the "best" rock songs of all time, such as this, Bohemian Rhapsody or Free Bird as examples. They are musical journeys with multiple changes in style and musical interludes/solos that stick in peoples minds. They truly capture so many elements in one epic song.

Youse are right. It was really, really "G-R-O-O-V-Y l". It sure sounded a whole lot better than all the bs that they play today. No wonder ya' play music from the past. I don't know if any really Beautiful Romantic Love Songs that they play nowadays that are not from the past. Can you? Anyway, thank you so very much for getting with the program. Hopefully one day, someday you will play some music with "SRV" Stevie Ray Vaughn from "Double Trouble", when Stevie is actually playing with his hands behind him. Of course any "LIVE" Version of most anything is a thousand times better or a million times better than one that is not. And almost if not everything on the "Double Trouble" Music is fine. And for a little bit of Southern Rock, check out "CCR" Credence Clearwater Revival, the "LIVE" Version of "I heard it through the Grapevine", "Born on the Bayou", or anything and even the band "Chicago", Ole' Rock n' Roll Music Rules. Just like songs from Motown. Better than anything today. Let your ears be the judge Amigos. See youse.

As much as I love their live material, new listeners to a song should listen to the studio version first.
In my opinion this song is a song of hope, but only if one makes the right decisions. It can also be construed as a stark warning.
As Robert says "there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on". His impromptu "I hope so", is probably a statement of truth for him as they were living a decadent rocker lifestyle. They redefined the term really. The tragedies that befell the band and Robert in particular had to have played a role in him avoiding the song after they broke up...

Great song. I suggest that one listen to studio versions of Zeppelin songs before live version for three reasons.
First, Zeppelin didn't strive to replicate studio versions when they performed like most other bands did. They frequently improvised during performances, and it was incredible. If you don't know the studio version, it's difficult to appreciate just how amazing that was.
Second, Page was an absolute genius in the studio and much of what he did couldn't exactly be replicated live. By not listening to studio versions, one can't appreciate just how phenomenal he was as their producer. He was well ahead of his time.
Third, it will give you a chance to compare and contrast, then decide which version you like best. As much as I love to watch Zeppelin perform, I prefer the studio version of some songs. Also, it can be difficult to find live versions of every song so if you only react to live, you'll miss a lot of songs that were excellent but not performed in concert for one reason or another.
    Anyway, just an idea. ;)

In my opinion, for what it's worth, Jimmy is definitely top twenty, maybe top ten but, there are just sooo many great guitarists for this era you kinda/dorta have to say that of the top five, all can be number one. For my money, you just can't beat Stevie Ray Vaughan for the blues, Mark Knopfler for rock and Roy Clark OR Glen Campbell for country. But, that's just me . . .

Haha wow your off your rocker dude, but yes your opinion. Top Twenty? How about top 1 You need to listen to every Zep song out there and come back and tell all of us here Page is in the top 20

Yes it's the greatest song hut the funny thing is Robert Plant hates it. He hates it so much he paid a radio station $10,000 to stop playing it. Also you need to react to the band Heart cover of it. Believe it or not but this was never released as a single.

I do like Stairway to Heaven. It is not my favorite Led Zeppelin song, in part due to the fact that after this song was released, the radio stations played it to death, and I mean to death. I also think that is part of the reason Robert Plant stopped performing it. I also heard that he actually paid a radio station not to play it. I can only listen to it once in a great while anymore.
