Making a New Propane Forge! (With a Ribbon Burner)

  • I've been needing a new forge for a while. The old one was great for forging knives, but I also want to make some bigger axes, so a slightly wider forge will suit my needs better. I started with a propane tank because it is already the right shape, and is easy to work with. I bought the ribbon burner from Kenneth DeRosier on Instagram @derosierforge, It works great and is at a great price. The ribbon burner provides a more even heat, and is more efficient than my previous burner, so there will be less hot and cold spots in the forge, making it ideal for forge welding, and forging blades. I hope you enjoyed watching me make this forge, I'll see you on the next one

    Mr. Penn,
    You have made a wonderful piece of equipment. You can be proud of what you have done.
    If might suggest, plumbing a normally closed electric valve on your gas line. Wiring a safety valve in, on the down stream side of your fan switch so that the propane is off when your fan is off. It will avoid any kind of potential back flashes that might harm you.
    They are about $25 and well worth it to avoid what can be a major problem.
    My best to you and your future.

    Hello Liam, i built a ribbon Burner forge too, but i find it to be really expensive to run, i use a 0,06 inches injector, and a big propane bottle last me less than 20 hours, how about yours ? I might reduce my injector size

    • @LiamJPenn
      @LiamJPenn  3 роки тому

      I’m not a forge expert by any means but in theory a ribbon burner should use less fuel than other burners. A barbecue size propane tank usually lasts me a few forging sessions

    What type of insulation material did you use? Home brewed or a store bought refractory mix?

      The propane comes in through the black tube, and the air from the blower is through the big pipe. It’s pretty straightforward
