Making a New Propane Forge! (With a Ribbon Burner)

- I've been needing a new forge for a while. The old one was great for forging knives, but I also want to make some bigger axes, so a slightly wider forge will suit my needs better. I started with a propane tank because it is already the right shape, and is easy to work with. I bought the ribbon burner from Kenneth DeRosier on Instagram @derosierforge, It works great and is at a great price. The ribbon burner provides a more even heat, and is more efficient than my previous burner, so there will be less hot and cold spots in the forge, making it ideal for forge welding, and forging blades. I hope you enjoyed watching me make this forge, I'll see you on the next one

Love that buzz box sound
Pretty awesome. Can't wait to see what you make with it
Thanks. Me too 🤪
Well done sir!
Thank you!
Nice job. Congratulations
Thanks
@@LiamJPenn ur very welcome
Don't be shy wearing that respirator, Most of us old boys have coughing fits all day long!
Nice looking forge.
Thanks
Mr. Penn,
You have made a wonderful piece of equipment. You can be proud of what you have done.
If might suggest, plumbing a normally closed electric valve on your gas line. Wiring a safety valve in, on the down stream side of your fan switch so that the propane is off when your fan is off. It will avoid any kind of potential back flashes that might harm you.
They are about $25 and well worth it to avoid what can be a major problem.
My best to you and your future.
Thanks
Great job looks good
Well Sir,
You REALLY did a job on that one.
Looks very good indeed.
Next level of new adventures awaits.

Thanks
Nice shirt, and great forge! 👏💪
Thanks haha
Nice Job man- I'm new to all of this, whats a good blower size/power ?
We're you entered at the Jr Agricultural Mechanics competition yesterday?
Nope
Hello Liam, i built a ribbon Burner forge too, but i find it to be really expensive to run, i use a 0,06 inches injector, and a big propane bottle last me less than 20 hours, how about yours ? I might reduce my injector size
I’m not a forge expert by any means but in theory a ribbon burner should use less fuel than other burners. A barbecue size propane tank usually lasts me a few forging sessions
@@LiamJPenn interesting, they don't freeze really fast ? I might tweek a few things on my burner
@@camillesennegon they freeze once they start getting low especially in the cold weather
What type of insulation material did you use? Home brewed or a store bought refractory mix?
I first did insowool blanket, then i covered that in castolite 30
@@LiamJPenn Cool! How thick is the layer of kastolite? Just trying to get a rough idea of how much material I should buy of each; ceramic blanket & kastolite powder. Lmk, thanks!
@@evanfrucht I used 2” insowool, just enough to go around the inside of the forge, then I used probably 20 lbs of castolite
Where did you get that empty propane tank. Or did you empty it yourself
Just the place in town that deals with hazardous materials. They had them de-pressurized
@@LiamJPenn thanks
Awesome! what refractory did you end up using?
Castolite 30
@@LiamJPenn cool thanks. I'll have to get some. My forge is due to be re lined.
Sorry, got another question. How long did you let the refractory dry before laying it over to do the sides and top?
Where do you generally source all of that large plate steel ?
I got it from a local welding supply shop
@@LiamJPenn oh alright cool, thanks
Hey Liam!! Its absolutly Amazing job!!
I got a question though. Is the pipe That goes into the forge Just empty or Is There all a serie of gas bits ecc..?
That pipe is empty. The air/ gas mixture just goes straight into the forge
How much did that ribbon burner cost?
$150 from @derosierforge on Instagram
@@LiamJPenn thanks
Can I buy your old forge
I was wondering if I can buy your old forge
I’ll be hanging onto it for now
The small pipe feeds the gas and the big pipe feeds the oxygen... Am I right. I wanna know because I am building a ribbon burner forge. I am using LPG as that's all I got
The propane comes in through the black tube, and the air from the blower is through the big pipe. It’s pretty straightforward
Дружище,где хопиш,а,хопиш где?
Ну сколько можно ждать?
Hey man would you be interested in doing some sort of collab? I’m open to pretty much anything, so let me know
