This forge build is like anything else, it seems complicated until you build one and then it all makes sense. In this one we built and cast the burner and then we fire it up. It works great.

Great video Jim, very informative, looks like the ribbon forge is the way to go as coal is next to impossible to get down south. Propane is expensive too but adding forced air into the forge cuts way back on propane by adding oxygen similar to a cutting torch, anyway you know all this. Have a good one.

I waa able to forge four carving hatchets in it tonight super fast. Between the press, the 2x72 grinder and this forge I think we're about there.
Great job Jim! Currently using coal but want to do more production work so a gas forge is in my future. Been thinking about a ribbon burner and this just pushes me more in that direction! Keep it going!
Fantastic job Jim, that is just going to be so useful for your workshop. The build could not have been better explained at each step. It’s amazing what you can do for yourself. Looking forward to seeing what you make and how much better it will be than the coal. Like you said, your coal supply has dried up in your area. Nice job, you can tell that you know what you are doing when it comes to burners. I didn't have as much luck with the gas forge that l built. I kinda forgot about it and currently using my coal forge. I picked up 400 lbs of Bituminous coal which should last me for years. I live in south west Ontario and coal over here is hard to find and no cheap and propane gas can cost 25 $Canadian for 20 lbs. I got the coal for about 60cens a lbs Canadian
The prices of everything is going to insanity.

I don't claim to be an expert most of my experience with burners is from large boilers & gas turbines from marine & power generation, but you seem to have absolutely nailed this forge build Jim, very nice
maaaaaaaaate , that is the best propane forge build i have seen in all the years i have been looking for the best forge , wow thank you for what you do have been a sub for a couple of years now . sorta wish i was ya naboure so we could do stuff heheheh love ya work mate .

Looks great brother. I truly need to build a new gas forge and upgrade my blower for my ribbon burner.
Do it bud, I used it tonight and was able to forge four carving hatchet heads in around two hours with that forge and the press.

I’m a lefty like you but I’ve spent so much time on a 300 machine I thread pipe even on a chain vise with my right hand.
When I try it the other way I get confused on which way to spin my pipe tape on and I just end up second guessing myself over and over. I’m not all that bright.

Wonderful build! I’ve wanted to build a ribbon burner like this for a glass blowing glory hole. This will be very helpful . Any need to fasten the refractory to the steel portion of the burner? Thanks again 👍
I've had no issues with it cast in place, it's holding up quite well and it is used close to daily. Sometimes 12 hours at a stretch.
I knew all those straws at Dollar General were good for something.
Stick welders ROCK!! I learned welding with one, in the late 60’s and always liked their versatility and arc finish and I still use one. Nice job on the burner. 👍👏 It’s hard to tell here, but is this type of burner quieter than the normal commercial types? Also, you say you are experienced with propane, burners, gas forges, etc, but I noticed that you opened the high pressure valve on the cylinder a couple of turns. Big no-no safety wise. Weren’t you taught to only crack the HP valve only half a turn? Same goes for Oxy-Acetylene bottles. Safety! Go have a chat with your local fire crew. You’ll get more than enough gas for your burner even if it was 5 times bigger. How long do you think it would take you to turn the gas supply off in an emergency? C’mon man. You are an ‘Influencer’ and an experienced operator and you’re showing everyone how not to be safe with HP fuel supply. That’s a gas forge and makes me want to make one myself. Jim Thanks for the content, splains a lot. I should have one of these but as an aside my daughter Karla has a ceramics studio and there might be a good application there. One question though. If you block off the door of the forge chamber does that affect the performance of the blower? You know like if you slide those fire brick in front of the door?
The door is never blocked off completely. There is enough opening left to make it work.

Try to go for the 2" pipe if you can. I'll take a look at the model number and get back to you.
My only question is, what is the volume of the chamber vs the size of the burner. You expressed the size of the burner, but not the volume of the forge itself. Thanks again

Sorry for the delayed response. I used Firecast which is good over 3100*F. The straws are standard drinking straws from the Dollar Store. In this series I showed how to figure out how many holes you need in a pretty simple way. Take the straws and put as many as you can into the 2" pipe without deforming the straws and that will be how many you need.

How is this holding up now? Is the refractory for the ribbon burner Kastolite or something else, or same as you used in making your forge?
It is indeed Kastolite. It has held up incredibly well, not a chip or a crack.
@@TheTradesmanChannel THANKS! Incredible how expen$ive refractories are, but it is what it is. Gotta have it. There is one place that sells Kastolite for 15 dollars in 5lb bags - is that enough for one ribbon burner in your guess? Shipping cost is crazy too.
I've watched most of your build videos on your barn, but still can't figure out the size, foot print of it? Pray tell ! I am about to build my 24x24 tf
The barn is 28'x50', two story with 12' ceilings on the first floor and 9.5' ceilings on the second floor down the middle.

I may be showing my ignorance but if you are running at 1 PSI why is a 30 PSI regulator needed. Assuming you will at some point need to turn it up for forge welding but if you can forge at 1 PSI would you really need much more?
Fair question and I ask myself the same thing. It is not needed at all. The highest pressure I've had it to is 2psi and I was torching the steel.
:44 how big are the holes on the air mix baffle? I’m in the middle of making my own burner, and no one seems to mention a size for those holes, so I’m assuming it does not matter much?
The holes are 5/16. Easiest way is to use straws. Instead of trying to figure out how many I just filled the 2" pipe with them and drilled the same number of holes in the burner form.

Which specific blower are you using? If you mentioned it in the video, I missed it.
It is a Dayton 3" 120v blower. I'll get the model for you.
What is the length of the 3 in.sq tube n size of the hole you drilled in the 1/4 in. Pipe cap
I drilled a 1/16" in the cap and the 3" tube is around 10" long.
How did you deal with the straws in the refractory?
I sprayed them with WD40 before casting and they pulled right out.
Will it work +/-same if i used 6/4" pipe?
May not be as hot for the same size chamber.
Can you use a Fire brick and drill the holes?
There is a soft brick that can withstand the high temps but apparently it doesn't hold up due to its brittleness.
Can you not run your camera plugged in? I know you can't do that for field recording, but I would think you could manage in the shop and avoid unnecessary outages like that.
I need to order a special adapter for it, it's not a bad idea.
And whot happened when i just weld 3cm thick steel plate with holes Instead of concrete,?
Steel burns out fast. You might get away with stainless for a little longer.
If those are the standard sized threaded nipples you can dope the inside thethreads on the inside of the fittings then basically hand tighten as in gorilla grip it hand tight you could pump it up to 150 psi and not have a leak.😂
Dope on the inside? Not this guy. I've cleaned too many strainers and gas valves over the years full of dope after a new install. Sure it looks great but it's not a great practice.
Yeah, you don't use half the can three threads of half the diameter just enough that it rolls a bead on the inside between the nipple and the fitting. I've seen some pretty nasty strainers as well, but they would be full of scale and maybe some welding rod stubs. After a line has been installed for a month or so when the commissioning and start up crew comes through doing blowdowns and pressure testing most of the dope has already stiffened up to where it's gonna be pretty much where you put it. Also, if you read on the can of dope, it will say for 1-1/2" and up that you have to dope the inside and out. I'm actually sitting here looking at a can of rectorseal that says it and a can of true blue that says 1-1/4" and up. Instrumentation air is a different story we would never put dope at all on the fittings. Teflon tape only. That is for that very reason you stated of getting dope inside the instruments and such. As an industrial pipefitter with 30 years in the trade, the only time anyone had anything to say about the application of pipe dope is when they rubbed some off the pipe on their clothes. Other than that, they only cared whether it would hold and pass pressure test or not.
I'm I'm the pipefitters union myself, 20 years. I'm a service guy though so I see the stuff afterwards. Our pipe fitters put half the damn can inside the fitting.
