Hey, look! It's a thing I'm doing now - a post-on-location-video image review video. That's right. Read that sentence again. It makes sense.
After my most recent on-location video series to photograph saguaro cactuses in the Sonoran Desert, I wanted to share with you my thoughts about the pictures and show you how I planned my trip in the first place. So buckle-up, amigos, because it's time to talk about things.
I planned this trip to Arizona by looking at shadows on Google Maps satellite view. I wanted to shoot saguaros, so I just looked for saguaro shadows. Then I looked for a road next to those shadows and traced it back to civilization.
Yep, I'm a regular Magellan or Columbus or any of the other legends of navigation.
As for the images, I'm going to discuss camera settings, composition, what's good, what's bad, how I feel about the images, and how to properly view digital photos (hint: you can't use your light table). From the 6x17 photos I took with my Shen Hao TFC 617-A camera to the 6x7 shots on my Mamiya RZ67 to the instant film on my Mint Camera SLR670-S all the way to the light painting night photography shots on my Canon EOS 6D - I'll talk about them all.

20 minutes of sitting back and chilling. Awesome.
That's what I like to hear. Thank you
yeah just what i am going to do now, perfect timing
That shirt. Those are really big pixels man!
Love your show. Stand up photography.
monmioamio ha! Low-Rez shirt. That's good.
You killed it by throwing the sd card to the light box, couldn't stop laughing with you saying "you get it" 😂😂😂. Love your on location series and this review. Keep doing them. Cheers!
Hehe me to man.... 😂
Instant thumbs up even before starting the video! Quality content as always :) The on location videos are easily best of youtube. Cant wait for next series popping up in the feed.
Patsesson thank you so much! Means a lot to me.
So good Nick, thanks for sharing. I actually fell off my chair laughing at your memory card on the light table...hilarious!!!
Bill McCarroll thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your on location photography series and I also love how you have a great review of a lot of the photos that you took afterwards. I look forward to your next adventure!
Alice thank you! I'm glad to hear that. Always a little worried these image reviews will be boring for everyone but me - haha.
I think it inbues a good quality of looking over the photos that you've taken and learn to improve your own photography skills. I have a bad habit of taking photos and "forgetting about them" right afterwards aha
I really like the way you narrate your trips and insights. Your pictures are truly inspirational. I hope to jump into the film world one day. Love that pano format! Cheers from Italy!
Nicolò Di Giovanni thank you! 35mm is a great inexpensive way to get your feet wet with film. I hope you can give it a try before long. It's fun.
Just found your channel this week, your videos are so good, Some of the best i have seen on film photography. I have learned so much already.
Nice video, Nick! Really enjoyed you telling how you planned the trip.
bogrunberger thank you very much
Always entertaining, Nick. The images look amazing. My faves is the wide shot with the cactus in the middle.
I was looking back at some videos you made a few years ago with that odd hat! Man you have loosened up and I just smile all the while through - well done !
Oh boy have I missed your optimism. Love the stuff you do.
Also check out that volume/space rendition on those night photos, wow!
haunchofmammoth thank you very much!
Love your videos. More desert on location asap please :)
Lindstenfoto thank you! And I agree - I need to get back out to the desert!
Nice video, and I enjoyed your trip videos as well. I’m headed to Phoenix from the northeast in April and you’ve inspired to me to carve out some time to seek some nearby saguaros and mountains while I’m there. Well done!
Theodore Merklin that's awesome! They are worth seeing. Enjoy the trip!
Awesome video and content as usual thanks for sharing Nick. Love the portra film colors

matthieu pasquier thank you!
Great video and photos, Nick!
Film Photography Club thank you!
appreciating the polaroids more and more....great work :)
Pontifex Maximus thank you!
Blown away. Great variety, creativity and skill. The truck photos are cool (no need to apologize!) and that abandoned cabin is sweet with the green lighting inside.
Tim Long thank you very much!
Great video! Thanks for making it. I'm born and raised in Phoenix so it's always great to see beautiful shots of saguaros in the Sonoran Desert. Next time that you are in Arizona, stop by Phoenix to do a meet up.
Ordered myself an sx-70 after this series of videos. Looks like too much fun!
Awesome content! Really enjoyable videos!
hey Nick, these photos are really interesting, each medium brings a different vibe, very productive trip! I'm more of a portrait guy, but your videos are tempting me to go out and try some landscape. Thank you for the inspiration man.
Alfredo Cristinziano glad to hear that! Shooting landscapes can be a great stress reliever. Thanks for watching
Just found your channel through Ben Horne. Simply loving your content. Thank you for creating and sharing it!
A new one, a great one :)
Now we needs one about printing and framing this great picture !
Thank you Nick ;)
Gaëtan Pulfer good idea. Thank you!
Fantastic work
Your videos and photography are so excellent. Definitely, always take pictures of your truck and campsites. Excellent truck, BTW. All the best!
Mojave511 thank you very much!
As always a great pleasure!
Massimo Fiorentino thank you!
Hey Nick..thanks so much for all your efforts in regards to the educational vids. I am not really a landscape fine art guy, more into social documentary photography but I find all your tutorials very useful, feel I am learning a lot. Thanks so much Gerry
You know I really like this guy's videos. They're extremely entertaining and they teach you a thing or 2 awesome....
When you mentioned the truck pictures, i was worried for a little. Then after seeing them, i was impressed! They look like catalog pictures for an actual advertisement for Toyota.
Sine Nomine haha! I don't blame you.
Great video and explanations. Thank you!
always such good entertainment watching your videos. on top of that they are very educational. keep them coming! :)
Outstanding job.I don't even do film photography but I enjoy your youtube channels.Keep it up.
Mark Leary that's good to hear. Thank you!
Good stuff Nick, thanks for sharing!
Juan Patricio thanks, Juan!
I really enjoy your videos and images. Thanks for sharing...
Mike Morgan thank you very much!
Love how your mind works when it comes to composition. You see so different than I would, so inspirational. Gonna have to head out to Joshua Tree with my old RB67 and try to see “out of the box” Thank you for sharing
roger bourland I really appreciate that. Thank you!
I saw there was a new vid and was instantly happy.. love the 8-bit shirt too :)
would love to see another print / frame video
Joshua Vince thank you! And good to know. I'm thinking of doing a video like that soon.
I shoot digital, but damn... I love your videos. Been binging them lately. Better than Netflix. The memory card on the light table cracked me up... laughed out loud. Keep it up,please👍 Greetings from Norway. Cheers🍻🍻
Yay! We need more❤️
Fun and interesting as always Nick!! I am learning a lot. I went to Merzouga desert in Marocco because I was inspired by your lacations :)
Stefano Pusceddu that's awesome! I'd love to shoot that desert someday.
Love the centered saguaro. I'm not to far from that area, will have to check it out.
You've got a great sense of humor. Great video.
Andy Seward thank you! I try to not take myself too seriously.
dude! i like your content! please do more!
I love your content so much man
TheFishboy50 thank you!
I love these videos.
Really good images and video.. The pano with the sun is sweet. And that memory card on light table... 😄
Chirag Pradhan thank you!
Great shots, nutin’ like film for latitude 😊
Ken Munoz amen to that.
Never saw anybody have so much fun with photography! Dude... I'm jealous !
You’re the best Nick!
Adam Pamungkas no, no. YOU'RE the best! Thank you!
Back in the day when I shot transparency film (Fuji velvia) bracketing and camera duplicates where the norm! Always better to have more in case I needed to send the same image off to different venders.
Great stuff dude!
Great video. I hope you will make more like this. The photos are awesome, the panos are still my favorites, however, I like the 4Runner pics too. ;) I also like taking pictures of my Jeep. :)
Gábor Ruff thank you! I appreciate the feedback because I'm never sure if this type of video will be of any interest to anyone. And hey, when you got a good set of wheels, you gotta photograph it excessively. Ha
Great job dude. I enjoy these films a lot.
Heath L Barbier thank you!
Great Video.....love the fact that you dont have that irritation UA-cam style music blasting in the background.....
Alan Jones thank you! And double thank you. I have UA-cam pet peeves that I try to avoid.
Hi Nick. I like your videos a lot and it's obvious that you have a great passion for photography. It's infectious and that's great. Do you have any advice on what to look for in a first exploratory gear if a DSLR shooter would like to enter the film photo scene?
Wonderful video man, got me wanting to order more Portra for my RB-67
Darren Peoples thanks! Yeah better stock up
Man I love your vids!!! Had to open myself a beer and enjoy this! :)
Gaetan Cormier thank you! Always a bonus to know I'm encouraging the consumption of beer! You're really going to love the next video I'm working on...
Can't wait ! :)
More great video. Perfect follow to OL vids. So yeah, how about something on your use of multiple ND filters. Once again, thanks for all the hard work making these primo videos.
First I thought like " Damn! Red on blue! Cool!" But then that Blue cactus came and it just... has something! Great shots!
Nick Kuratnik I had the same thought process. Thanks man!
Who would have thought I'd watch a 23 minute video, then a 30 minute video, and finally a 21 minute video about a single trip
Looks like you have some great new images! Going to get them into an art show soon? I think the color-gelled cactus images would look great printed large on metal and sell well too!
Gary Jones Fine Art Photography thank you! Hoping to have them in a box set portfolio soon...
You're my favorite youtube photographer, and I live in LA. How can I support more of this content?
Praveen Kumar Sharma thank you very much! I'm planning to offer a box portfolio soon and prints to help support the videos. If they do well, I plan to make videos more frequently.
nice, thanks for sharing!
love your show
Robert Popper thank you!
Thx for the review. The trip planning Apps were of interest.
UFO Bob glad to hear that. Thank you!
Great Video ... again.
Greets from Germany
Firlefranz Danke!
Cool review, oh, sd card on light box was epic
Another excellent video, thanks Nick.
I think I might also take pictures of my 4Runner if I had one, I'd keep quiet about it to the other half though ;)
Phill Ashworth thank you! Haha - yes, keep that close to the vest.
Don't fight what you're drawn to! That's who you are as an artist! Your videos are awesome and hysterical. =) If you're ever in Austin Texas I'll buy ya a Weihenstephaner!
Thank you sir!
Please make a photo book. Your work is awesome
Love it
My Mamiya Mamma Mia! Great work!
Marco Fantin haha! Love it.
Nice stuff.
Wes Chilton thank you!
If you're worried about scratches on negatives, you should try to find a lab that does dip and dunk processing. Scratching is usually due to dirty pads in auto processors, as far as I'm aware (which are way more common than dip and dunk). Either that, or start using Digital ICE! That'll at least mitigate scratches, if not remove them completely.
daviduu that's good advice. I use iSRD on my scanner, which works quite well, but I'll have to see if it has Digital ICE.
Most bodacious! More please!
Michael Carrithers good word. Reminds me of my youth.
Mine too.
Papas got bills to pay, exactly. Glad to see you Nick!
joshjb30 thank you!
You like the composition at 10:26 because the cactuses height in the frame mimics the hills heights behind. Funny you didn’t noticed it.
Hey Nick, you probably know this already but there are some saguaros along the road that goes between Pheonix and Sedona but at the Phoenix end more. Not as remote or as beautiful as where you were but good for a quick fix if you're in the area.
Could you go into a little detail on how you metered in the 6x17 saguaro shots? Did you try to meter for the shadows in the cactus? average between the sky and shadows? I'm still trying to learn how to meter properly
richardandchantal I'm considering releasing a short online course to cover my metering process for film. Hopefully sooner than later.
I'd be very interested in that as well...always good to have different points of view and approaches.
Man you really should be considering a career as a synchronized speaker for movies. Awesome show!
Philipp Nagel haha! Never thought of that before. Sounds fun.
Hey Nick, I've found your channel a couple weeks ago and I can't stop bingeing on your videos :) Your content is top notch, photography included! Plus it makes me wanna come back to the wild west, where I only spent a very short vacation last winter, this time to shoot some film. From this series I really like the 6x17 picture of saguaros shot at dusk that you don't like, with those pretty blueish tones. I would definitely buy a print.
Is there a possibility you would sell me the rights to do a 1-off small print for my personal use ? 😬
Thank you for the kind words! Very glad to hear you enjoy the channel. I generally don’t sell these as image files, but I ship prints worldwide. Check out the prints section of my website or shoot me an email. 👍🏼
Great vid! Love the colors of Portra. How did you do the scans? I have had some issues with scanning and color balance when using Portra.
Mattias Marklund thanks! I scan using an Epson V750 with SilverFast software. SilverFast has a great feature called "Neg Fix" (I think) that does a pretty damn good job of color balance.
Thanks! That's excellent, since I have been slightly worried about my ability to fix the Portra color balance. I am about to buy a V800, so this is def good news.
PS. The pictures of the saguaros are mind blowing! I especially like the 6x17 panos.
Planning a trip out that way myself. Which version of Gaia GPS are you using? Curious if the 'basic' version will do what is shown in your video.
Hey Nick, when r u going to do the fuji velvia 100 video? Great vid. You got several outstanding images.
1717jbs you mean why Velvia 100 is better than 50? Thanks for the reminder. I need to get on that.
Yes, I'm looking forward to it!
Nothing wrong with taking pictures of cars, man. In fact, it's highly encouraged!
Great video!
Being as the Sonoran Desert NM is administered by BLM and not NPS, you can fly a drone there.
PB Salfen another point in favor of BLM land.
Now a days, most people to using digital camera but you are enjoying with film too. what is the big different between Medium format Film & digital Pictures?
Liked for the lame SD card joke. LMAO. Well done. Awesome shots. Those Sunset shots are top shelf.
Michael Baez haha. Then I will check that bit off as "worth it." Thanks man!
Where do you get your film processed? It's probably been 15 years since I shot on film, and in that time our local pro lab closed its doors. I can certainly do B&W myself, but that color... So looking for a recommendation.
Mike Keller I get everything processed at Pro Photo Connection in Irvine.
What BW Polaroid film and camera did you use? I have an SX-70. Thanks
FilmFactry used a Mint Camera SLR670-S on this one with the most recent Polaroid originals film.
Have you shot on Ektar and how does it compare to Portra
Is there large format film of sufficient speed to allow 30 sec nighttime shots?
Robert Grenader hmm. That's a good question. In color film, I doubt it. Black and white might have a 3200 ISO film available.
Saguaro National Park outside of Tucson is also a great place to find Saguaros
Been wanting to visit Tucson for awhile.
@@nickcarverphoto Sabino Canyon is another great place.
still can't get over how much matt day and you look alike
I think your resemblance is more towards Henry Hudson. Hopefully you don't suffer a mutiny.
I enjoyed this follow up, then again I enjoy all your stuff. Enjoyed the digital intro. Peace!
Arcana73 haha! I haven't heard that one yet, but I definitely see the resemblance.
Nice job. And thanks for bucking the trend of having a baseball cap glued to your head indoors. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
Richard G haha! How dare you. I love my trucker hats like they are my children...
Nick Carver That's cool. Just wear it in your truck or SUV and not in the darkroom. And the backwards cap... Oh, the horror.
Me: Next to a mime?
Video: continues playing
Me: Oh, a *mine*.
Nick: I don’t bracket because it is a waste of film!
Also Nick : I take 2 of the exact same panoramic 6 by 17 images!
Keep centering, dude! Don't fight it! That's just your style making itself heard! Oh, and your channel rocks! \m/ [(>_
Duncan Salisbury-Gaumont that's what I need to hear! Thank you!
