It’s truly impressive how one’s persons video upload will have me drop everything I’m doing to watch it. It’s simple, Nick uploads, and everything else comes after that
such a genius marketing campaign from the tourism board. how could I not want to go to Spain after seeing it through Nick Carver's lens! can't wait for the rest of this series.
Man, I was waiting for this one. My Hometown is Málaga. I lived a couple of blocks away from the Correos’ building… By the way, I love the picture. This video series is going to be amazing. Thanks, Nick, you’ve been my inspiration for years. Seeing you in my beloved Andalucía is incredible.
3:32 Rookie mistake Nick! Rookie mistake! ALWAYS pack at least ONE alibi roll at ISO 3200 with the rest of your film. It can be a dummy roll, it doesn't matter! But it allows you to argue for a hand check, since if they have to check that one alibi roll, they may as well hand check all of them! You're welcome!
I wish I could remember when I started watching your channel. It was several years ago. You have grown so much as a photographer, but it is the hangin' out with Nick vibe I loved then and still do.
Quick FYI about airport X-rays. Don’t leave film in your checked-in luggage - that will damage your film. And most security X-rays worldwide are okay… except for Southeast Asia. Plead, bribe, or do whatever you can to never have your film go through. (I’ve learned all of this the hard way.)
Enjoyed this a lot, Nick. I’m glad you really worked that postcard scene, waiting for just the right light. I learned a lot just from that! Also, kudos to your videographer! I loved that fast swing from the castle back to you. I’m still happily dizzy 🤪
Yes they are plenty busy with tourists from Germany and the UK in summer. But they’re specifically trying to bring awareness to people in North & South America and for tourists in the off season. Which is why we all went in December.
This is so awesome. I got to the end and couldn’t believe 25 minutes had already passed. Keep it coming! That graffiti photo was amazing. I was a little skeptical in the wider video shots, but the result is fantastic.
Finally!!! I've been really looking forward to the Spain videos. It's surprising how different you americans see our landscapes, make me feel like I should be more conscious and appreciative about my country. PD: if you ever find yourself in the north of Spain (Barcelona) I would be more than happy to try to help Cheers!! :D
I just started putting duct tape on the latches of my luggage, years ago, since any baggage handler can open a TSA Lock, but duct tape, on 3 or 4 latches, plus a strip on the edge, takes time, makes noise, and is more obvious at the carousel... Since 1988
Pausing watching the video just to say that your first image of the post office building was superb! That horizontal look is in the Nick Carver style. Now, onward.
Not sure if you noticed but in min 21:50secs, the mountain in the back looks like an old man sleeping. take a look at the right side of the frame… in the video… the highest peak is the nose.
Absolutely awesome man!! I love that you photographed that old post office building in the beginning! Gotta take them on their word about full creative freedom!
Question…..why wouldn’t someone in this situation just FEDEX their film to the hotel? It costs money but avoids the big risk of it getting damaged or confiscated by airport securities in both directions.
Awesome man I feel like if that was me waiting for the light to hit it would never come 🤣. Glad it worked out perfectly & very cool shots of both scenes.
Hello Nick. I've been following you since your first video on the channel. My head exploded! Let me explain. I was born and live in Andalusia (I am from Granada, where the Alhambra is), of course I do analog photography and I am so surprised to see you in the context of the cities close to mine, since for me, you are like the actor in an American movie deep, always in the desert and under all that American landscape that we Europeans have dreamed of being in, since it is like being in a movie. In your country it seems that every corner is photogenic, while here it costs a little more to achieve it. Although I have to admit that the land where I live is unique and I love the natural landscapes it has. Rather, I was referring to the contrast between the cities where you take photographs and those in Andalusia. It's so strange to see you taking photos in front of the "El Corte Ingles" shopping center in Malaga! haha, I think those of us who live around here will understand perfectly what I mean. In any case, I love what you do, you have a unique personality and style, a true reference, I hope we meet one day. Greetings friend, here is your faithful subscriber.
Really enjoyed this adventure. Looking forward to more. My favorite city image was the second. I like the wedge of shadow on the lower right buildings balanced by the wedge of shadow on the left more distance city. Seemed more dramatic.
That postal building shot was *chef's kiss*! A brutalist architecture photo book that may appeal Nick - if you've not seen already - 'Frédéric Chaubin. CCCP. Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed'.
Aside from your photography, which I've loved for years by the way, and has motovated and inspired my own analogue journey, the quality of your videos and storytelling just gets better and better. I cant wait for the rest of the videos in this series, and hopefully more on-location videos in the future (i appreciate these are difficult to do whilst juggling a busy working and home life, but i love them and Im greedy 😂). Top quality stuff Nick... hugs and high fives from Wales UK
Its a shame you didnt get to go to Seville, as its not that far from Málaga (or maybe it shows up in the next video? Hopeful!) The old semi abandoned world fair Expo '92 pavilion/park there has some really interesting architecture that would fit right up your (and Jason's) alley.
Cant wait to see the other parts of this Trip! Really does make me want to travel to Spain and take new images and print them out. Very happy to see you go through the whole creative process from scouting, setting up, composing the shot and taking the picture! Great video for a lazy sunday evening. Much love. ❤
So far into 2:16, who is filming you and how did you get this gig? For a moment there, I thought maybe you were going to do digital when you were talking about hockey. After the first press conference, I was wonder what is the per diem per day! Ok, got the name of your camera "man". Brutalism - is something I didn't know. I'm sure you know that building at the intersection of 11th and Figueroa streets was the colorful graffiti decorating 30 floors of an abandoned real estate project. What you don't think Orange County is a post card place.... How about Miguel Raton's house?
I drink coffee at Santa Coffee nearly every day. The one day I'm not there and Nick Carver drops by! Great video, can't wait to see more of the photos of my adopted homeland!
I have been waiting for your video of this job since I saw on the Heaton videos that you are a participant. I loved the opening shot and thought it was a Carver view of the building. The oversight panoramas were great but that first shot was representative of your style. I sm looking forward to the follow on videos.
followed you for a few years now, Nick, great to see your development with the exhibition and now being asked to travel overseas - I've learned loads watching you on both the technical and artistic side of things. Wishing you continued success, David.
This is awesome! Looking forward to all of this series. I had to laugh about your intro. I’ve reached that age myself where I just don’t want to carry huge, heavy camera gear with me, either, yet I always like to have a camera with me. I really did switch to a Leica M and a 35mm Summilux! I love the scene at the end. It reminds me a lot of the south part of San Francisco.
Damn, this marketing campaign worked so goood. I have never heard about this place and god it's beatiful. Wonderful photography Nick. Wasn't expecting a cityscape from your channel, but I can't complaint. Hahaha
Hi Nick 🙋♂️ Congratulations on such an amazing opportunity. I have a big favour to ask you, where can I get a Vandelay Industries sticker from? Cheers John
"No chance any of you are still reading this...but hey I gotta put something in here." Oh, I absolutely did read the description, my sombrero-wielding friend.
If you like Brutalism, you should come to Hanover and check out the Ihmezentrum. It's literally brutal. Brutally brutal. And it's quite hard to photograph because of its enormous size, especially if you want to avoid the usual angles.
Nick, you specifically mentioned Connor Hellebuyck, goalie for the Winnipeg Jets, in your video here. Are you a Winnipeg Jets fan? I figured, living in Orange County, you'd either be an LA Kings fan or an Anaheim Ducks fan. Though, let's be honest, neither of those teams is looking too great right now, especially the Ducks.
Nick, I've watched a number of your videos and greatly enjoy your complete technical expertise and knowledge of your equipment and style along with your very quirky and somewhat awkward persona (and I mean that in a complimentary way). I've seen now half-a-dozen Andalucia-project videos from photographers I routinely subscribe to (Heaton for example) as well as videos from other photographers that UA-cam has figured I would be interested in. Every one of the Andalucia-project photographers, and their videos, are uniquely endearing, interesting, informative, and entertaining. Love them all! The tourism board was right to hire you as I'm sure you've come to terms with, especially when combined with the diversity of all the other photographers on the project--it's a wonderful mix! Congrats on being selected--you make us SoCal photographers proud!
Nick, as always, some of the best content out there, a real treat- thanks for sharing the grandeur and minutia.. one small question though if you don't mind humoring me: my cable releases have been snapping off in fixture point on my Copal shutters, I see you've got a very smart looking red one.. could you recommend? sorry for such a banal question. Such a great video and overall fantastic work!
You should have told security you were working for the Spanish government. And/or labeled all of your film as ISO 3200. ;) I had the same experience with about a dozen rolls of Portra 400 120 in Argentinian airports last year.
Hi Nick, welcome to Europe! I live in the southwest of France, near the Spanish border, I travel to Spain often and I know how good it is to take photos in Spain, of course not as good as in France! !! I'm joking... I'm as much European as I am French, and when you live in France near the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees mountains, you share the same roots with the Spanish! I'm waiting for part 2, because I recognized a few places in the trailer! best wishes for the year 2024 !
Thanks very much for this very interesting video. Spain in general and Malaga in specific surely offer tremendous opportunities for photography. Something intriguing, at least to me, is who's behind the video camera. On one shot, Nick is walking up the hill for the wide scene literally empty handed. Then the next shot miraculously has the backpack, tripod, and 6x17 camera all laid out. Could whoever behind the video camera double as his caddie? 😄
Love it Nick. Just discovered your channel and I’m really enjoying it. My wife’s mother lives just along the coast from Malaga and whenever we visit we go into the city and I always end up photographing that post office building.
It is wild to me that airports have the high iso rule for hand checks. I worked in a film lab so I saw plenty of iso100 35mm film fogged by x-ray machines. The newer machines have higher power output and tighter wavelengths, which means its more likely to fog the film as well. If you went through multiple xrays I'm amazed you didn't have any fogging; you absolutely lucked out!
Loving these videos . I sailed in to Málaga working on the cruise ships in 1986 , bought my Sunpak flash in the court ingles . Went back last year for a long weekend, stunning city.
Oh boy this is gorgeous! I would had never thought of you coming to my beautiful Andalucía to photograph it. I really hope you had a blast here and felt welcomed. In Spain we are not very used to hand checks in airports for film, but what I do is carry with me a Ilford 3200 canister so the 1600 rule does not apply, they are usually keen on hand cheking the film after that. I hope you have the change to visit Cádiz in your next trip to Spain!
Best of Luck! It rained 3~5 days in some of others shoot! You a desert person! So-Cal ain't tropical rain forest! Jet Lag plus language if no Espagnol! Bon Voyage and Bravo!
I was there a few weeks before you. And yes ISO 1600 no problem ….. After a bad experience with airport scanners in Tenerife. I took my digital camera to Malaga. Looking forward to the next video
9:26 the Leica guys. You gotta show off when you have a camera with a red dot. :D Probably everybody has that period in their life, but most of us gorws up.
Thank you youtube algorithm for this gift! Lovely work, ive been falling more into my large format gear over the last year and this was an amazing push. Lovely work, new subscriber! Look forward to watching more of your videos ❤
so....I'm traveling through Madrid this weekend en route to Morocco. Do you think it would help to throw a few rolls of 3200 in the mix with the film I intend to shoot? maybe get a hand check then? 🤔
Awesome stuff, particularly enjoyed your hockey goal padding tangent. =) Maybe a dumb question, but how were you able to get a sense of how the images from top of the hill were turning out?
I was thinking "not sure if like the loud soundtrack, I've always liked to watch Nick's videos in the evening and the older ones were quieter" And then you shit on the beanie+Leica+gas station and it made it all ok :)
Stop apologizing for the photos you want to take but don't think "the client" will like. When you make the choice to press the shutter button, stand by it. If I hired you and felt like so much of your choices had to be explained, justified, rationalized, and whatever else, I would feel like I hired someone who doubted their vision, or worse, had none. I feel like that's the big problem with this current era of photo bros; you all have a giant love affair with the equipment, knobs, and film photo gadgets, but a great deal of uncertainty, if not neglect, for the ultimate purpose for all of the effort - the actual love of the photograph. Just my opinion (with respect to yours), but trust your eye. When you press that button be ready to defend your decision to your artistic end.
I went to California for the first time a month ago Nick, and it’s funny how you talk about a morning run past a postcard. I felt the same about SoCal compared to where I live in New England. It’s all perspective and sometimes new coordinates open your eyes in a new way.
It’s truly impressive how one’s persons video upload will have me drop everything I’m doing to watch it. It’s simple, Nick uploads, and everything else comes after that
Love this.
I agree. I don't usually sit through most creators long videos but ill watch every second of Nick's.
Yep I’m at work too, this is going to be a long dump
@@PenGiousNick and Ben Horne :)

such a genius marketing campaign from the tourism board. how could I not want to go to Spain after seeing it through Nick Carver's lens! can't wait for the rest of this series.
After seeing the 2 vids of Nick and all of Thomas Heaton we decided today go to Andalusia next year. 🎉

I fell in love with your hometown, my friend. On the last day of the trip I got to see more of it and the beauty is unparalleled.
I’m on the edge of seat waiting for part 2. They couldn’t have made a better choice for their campaign. Congrats Nick!
Finally! Man, it already feels like ages ago but it's only been about a month since Spain. 😳
It feels like ages ago. I’ve been trying not to get too sad that it’s over - haha

Brutalist architecture and scouting for a sh*tty laundromat - the tourism board will be so thrilled! Excellent work.

I didn't realize you and Heaton had never met. Any chance of restarting the podcast?
I totally support you and I’m drinking a white plantation rum punch now. Good stuff.
Never thought that this region of Spain does need any advertising. It is well known and loved here in Europe (especially in Germany).

so....I'm traveling through Madrid this weekend en route to Morocco. Do you think it would help to throw a few rolls of 3200 in the mix with the film I intend to shoot? maybe get a hand check then? 🤔
Awesome stuff, particularly enjoyed your hockey goal padding tangent. =)
Maybe a dumb question, but how were you able to get a sense of how the images from top of the hill were turning out?
Great content and wonderful to see you looking at stuff in Europe, even if it’s a 1970’s Correos that’s probably headed for the wrecking ball!
ohhh yeah! Lovely stuff Nick, can't wait to see the rest. We visited Andalusia last year and my god what a place it is 👌
I was thinking "not sure if like the loud soundtrack, I've always liked to watch Nick's videos in the evening and the older ones were quieter"
And then you shit on the beanie+Leica+gas station and it made it all ok :)
Good times: a new video from World Renown Photographer Nick Carver, baby!
5:44 My man 🤝
I went to California for the first time a month ago Nick, and it’s funny how you talk about a morning run past a postcard. I felt the same about SoCal compared to where I live in New England. It’s all perspective and sometimes new coordinates open your eyes in a new way.
