It took and ENORMOUS amount of balls to be different back then 😳. Jocks and preppies seemed earnestly offended that punks & creative types showed disdain for same-ness, conformity, thoughtless consumerism, and all that. It was SUPER common for punks and new-wavers to be the targets of males who wanted to do something with their confused masculinity through fist-fighting. That’s what America was like back then. And these guys had the balls to be THIS different and be from Ohio !! Y’all cannot imagine the level of balls-i-ness.
That must have after the 1970 shooting dead of 12 Kent State students by their own local National Guard, during an anti-Viet Nam War riot on the University grounds.

at the 3m mark the song takes off. It is one of the best songs of the 70s (released in 1978) and remains at the forefront of Progressive Punk Music. The concept dates back to 1924.
Forgetting about the brilliance on display and aurally for a moment, this is a really fucking awesomely complex song in terms of musicality and arrangement. I mean how the hell do you rehearse this timing??

I loved it- although luck showed up at concerts- I saw some crazy stuff- but as you see by this video- there is MUCH more to DEVO than just labeling them puck- that’s a misgendering of a way advanced group that should be haraled as pioneers into a new age of music that we haven’t even gotten to yet- masters of their craft👍🏻😁
I am a pretty big fan of the band that they use for the opening of this broadcast too, where Devo is displayed on the red background, that is not Devo, it is British band XTC. Honestly I like them more than Devo even, but both bands are in my top 10 favorites I would say. XTC has more good material and was better longer as far as new material went in my opinion. But Devo is a better live band, because XTC didn't even do live shows after a few albums becuase their singer Andy Partridge admitted to severe stage fright. And it is a shame, they deserved to be bigger and I think the lack of supporting tours were a main reason they were not as big. At the very least here in America.
their stuff from this period was so LSD it's untrue. Middle class punk on acid. Brilliant... halfway through it turns into an acid house party 10 years before acid house!
Went to Sanity to look for Duty Now For The Future said to girl im looking for Devo. Divo?No D.E.V.O. She missed the inside joke. Than said got El Divo. I walked out feeling sorry for her..
Mon deu! That was a good publicity stunt by Devo (2:20), tossing their uniforms to the audience. Devo mocked consumerism by using its own marketing tactics against it; profiting themselves by using the same consumer Advertising and Trademark imagery to jeer at it. Mockery of Consumerism is the essence of Punk; reflecting the opinion of we, the Social Outcasts, of the Status Quo of Consumerism. Punk proves that we Nerds can, after all, ROCK!🤓🎸📸👢💄👜🛍🚘💳💰
I would have to say their first album is one of the best punk albums of all time.
I’d argue it’s the best
@@BroForce426 I always get mad when people call devo new wave! Its not new wave! Its punk!
@@noelmurray8052Isnt new wave a derivative of postpunk?
It's a good point, although sounding more refined it did retain that punk energy and originality
these guys had the balls to be different ............. play pretty darn good music

DEVOLUTION IS REAL
Ya think?
They love "Island of Lost Souls" just like me. Rock n Roll 🤘💙🎶🔥
I'm so glad my dad had me listening to Devo at such a young age.
I had the pleasure of seeing them a couple of times back in the day in NYC and had the pleasure of yelling "WE ARE DEVO!!!"
Based profile picture
Do you mean, Quill, they are not men?
In the early 80's when DEVO hit it big my 6th grade school teacher talked about how she knew them when she went to school at Kent State
"Cool Teacher" Alert!
Lucky she didnt get murdered by the national guard like 4 of their friends.
That must have after the 1970 shooting dead of 12 Kent State students by their own local National Guard, during an anti-Viet Nam War riot on the University grounds.
Devo love France and France love Devo !!
What a great band! Showing how rock n roll can change and morph into something totally unique
Too bad they changed their style right after that. Still good but I wish we got more of this sound
They influenced future bands and audiences. What better epitaph could any modern band wish for; especially a Punk band!
This performance is so amazing and full of sound and energy, I love it.
Great and nothing like this ever . Love Devo .

MY GOD I LOVE DEVO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic. Saw them live in Auckland, early '80s. A good night....
This is grand! I never really knew Devo's material in depth, but I recall how they livened up MTV in the early years.
epic performance
So good!
Fantastic! (And on another note, let's hear it for short-shorts!)
Saw them in 78, they were fantastic! Nothing else like them! Thank you for the upload.
Its a little known fact that DEVO started the Jazzer- cize trend.
They didn't; it was already underway. Jane Fonda started it! I know... I was there...

Numan went out to the States to hear them, this song is surely where he got the idea for We are so fragile from, very similar!!!!!!
Wow !!!! They are still on fire !!!!
