1990. I was 16 and a huge Devo fan. Found out which city Mark Mothersbaugh lived in. Called information and found a listing. Didn’t think it was really him but called anyway. It WAS HIS NUMBER. Got to talk to him for a few minutes. Very nice man. I asked him why he was listed and he said he just never bothered to get his number unlisted. He said occasionally someone would call and he enjoyed talking to his fans.
Wow. Love this. Glad to know he's a good guy
That is real chill
Can you get me Bob's number? ;)
Detroit Holly 😂😂 that was way back in 1990. But he may still be listed in the phone book.
What's a phone book?
So many people didn't "get" the irony of DEVO. Not only did they have a different sound, they created a look and an attitude while simultaneously parodying it. Fucking brilliant.
They punked punk. The Monty Python crowd got it right away...
The 80s sure had a lot of "hair bands" but devo was quite alternative.
Maybe. But the music truly sucked.
1987 : San Diego, CA.
Devo blew the lid off in downtown! Fking Excellent! ❤
No IRONY ...this is for real
The twin vocals of Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale were always Devo's secret weapon.
Alan Myers was their secret weapon.
@@JunkyardKid Legit.
They were all secret weapons!
I gotta secret weapon for ya!! ha ha
I wish Devo would do the Superbowl halftime show.
That would be cool.
*one of THE most original bands ever...period*
Truly one the highest crimes of Rock and Roll is Devo's absence from the Hall of Fame.
The "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" is more about a shakedown for cash from artists than it is about honoring them. Someone should start a "Rock and Roll Hall of Shame" and induct the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as it's only member.
I voted for them when I was there a couple months ago. Also threw a vote in for Weird Al.
that hall of fame is a total sellout. the longer devo is excluded, the more credit to devote
@@mikenodine6713 Agree, that list is worthless.
@@stenovitz the fact that duran duran like just barely got in the rock n roll hall of fame
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the freaking arm keyboard?
Oh you noticed that did you?
What about the fact that that one is literally wearing glasses? Was he an "extra" or something?
Westside 909 genius...Mark always pushes the future... I miss Alan.(rip) I played with him in an improv group.
How about the fact that he's playing it upside down or backwards geniuses
yea totally dude it's like Nintendo's power glove
Every person that snickered or rolled eyes when they walked on stage was a die-hard DEVO fan by the time they left the stage
And yes...that arm keyboard is just the coolest thing.
These guys were setting precedents from day one. They jabbed at every societal issue, sometimes with perfect venom. And, it was done so well it was easy to miss.
This is as much art as it is music and these guys gave it to you right in the face.
They are as tight of a rock band as you will ever find.
Sorry, not at all "rock"! ROFLMFAO!!
Don't know much about the term "tight" we see...
Don't seem to know much about music in general, either.
Well done...
If you want to see funny...that would be you laughing hysterically at your own ignorance.@@Anarchy-Is-Liberty
DEVO was the SHIT!!! I LOVE THIS SONG! I Got this album as a Christmas Present from my Mom back in the early 80's when it FIRST Came out! And I STILL Love it!
Thanks Mom. You are SO MISSED! :(
They still are the shit!
One of the first punk bands that went mainstream. What a great Xmas present for your Mom. RIP to a person who was no doubt a good one.
I turned 18 in 1978. I was absolutely FLOORED by DEVO as soon as I heard them. Saw them many, many times after that over the years. DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE.
Are we not men? We are DEVO!
Im the same age. Was telling my older co workers that Devo was the new Beatles.
3:32 that mic save. Total pro.
Yes very cool indeed
Thanks for pointing that out!!! It was so seamless that I missed it and had to watch it in slo-mo which is even more incredible because he sings into the empty mic stand while he recovers the mic. What a pro move! DEVO rules!
😅🤣🤣🤣🤣
I saw Devo live for the first time on the New Traditionalists tour. It was one one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. The first half was with the black hair and gray suits. The second in the yellow radiation suits and red flower pots. Devo was at the height of its power then…
Did you notice that he plays that keyboard upside down in this video
Flower pots? Ahem. . .energy domes is what Devo promotes them as.
@@imagecarpenter Er… Energy Domes
5heybwere designed by an art deco chandelier from the singer on the lefts grade school.
Same - saw them in Atlanta. It was a show that seemed sophisticated and raw at the same time. Every freak in town showed up too! :)
Merv was "new wave" friendly - even devoting a whole show to new wave bands, including Blondie.
he wrote I`ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts
I used to love the Merv Griffin show
Gotta give credit to a guy, dressing like that, giving a platform to DEVO.
NO WAY!!!!!
@@eddygsmusicworld1708 No, Harold Elton Box and Desmond Cox in 1944 when Merv was only 19.
It’s the originality and weirdness that first attracted me to Devo. And then I got hooked on their music. Still a fan, decades later
yes, back in that era not many bands were that weird; check this one hit wonder: ua-cam.com/video/lNYcviXK4rg/v-deo.html
for me it was the moves.
Great band, life long fan here! So glad my parents encouraged me to explore all types of music!!
Me too. It was while in a rock club outside Camp Hansen Okinawa in 1981 while watching DEVO's 'Freedom of Choice " video that I became a fan.
@@alerey4363 their whole record "Trio and Error" was magnificently odd.
Sad thing for me I’d never heard of this band until 2023 I’m 51 but it’s never to late absolutely tremendous ✌️
That's insane...really?
@@drunvert yep
Never even heard Whip it? That's wild.
Welcome , it’s never to late!
Greg Hawkes of The Cars specifically thanked DEVO in his R&RHOF acceptance speech! DEVO inspired a lot of music through the 80's!!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂No they didnt. Devo sucked.
Yep. Songs like Down Boys and Misfit Kid show that influence.
And dont forget Suicide
Devo Rules! Akron boyz!
@@Synthetrix one of the most influential bands ever yet they STILL aren't in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame....go figure !!!
Impressed that despite joking around a little, Merv Griffin took them seriously enough to get their names right and ask some empathetic questions.
Nah Merv blew it. Concentrating on his stupid plastic hair.
He'd had them on a few times so I think he actually kind of knew them at this point.
They're pretty damn intimidating. Started as a punk band and they have the same energy, just all bottled up and pre-packaged for less angry people to listen to than your normal punks
Really? Didn't like his weak attempts at jokes and would've preferred actual questions about the band themselves, influences or their unique style. Felt like a wasted opportunity.
@@lukecage3485 Are you from this era of TV watching? Most TV show interviewers outside maybe Dick Cavett or Tom Snyder would just treat them like the butt of a joke.
I just noticed Mark's ARM Keyboard! I LOVE IT! SO COOL and WAY AHEAD of it's time! :D
Devo and B-52s deconstructed rock & roll in ways no one could have ever imagined at that time... even now!
Very good LIVE , on Tv, video. Great recovery with the mic Gerry!!!
What a genius band-the look, the music, the lyrics, the moves-so original and creative!
Fantastic brilliant DEVO
Devo is the best!! So many people haven’t a good understanding of how subversive and humorous they are!
one of the coolest bands ever
BRILLIANT…just brilliant
I was at the L.A. Forum concert of this tour. The show is still one of my top two favorite live pop music productions of all time. What they did with conveyor belts was awesome!
I still have the album. Bought it the day it came out. Devo was way ahead of their time. Great band.
it doesn't get any better than this~!
Been a Devo fan since "Duty Now For the Future". They are genius.
1978 bought that album
Caught them in concert in Sunrise, Fl for this tour. Awesome show, always remember treadmills on stage 😁
Soooo far ahead of the game. Always have been a big fan
I bought a pair of Bose 501’s when when I got my first paycheck and immediately picked up the “Oh No ,Devo” album later that day.I tore into it and Sound Checked “Mr Kamikaze/ Mr DNA Spudboy while cranking the volume to “12”.
Days earlier I was listening to a transistor radio and my alarm clock radio for entertainment. So thinking that I was at the house all alone and finally enjoying my new found freedom, it came as a shock to me when my Dad blasted the door open and stood there watching me fixate on the overly modulated gauges and LED light streams of my new system. It would not be long before I would be forfeiting my Music Money for Rent Payments.
I remember the Griffin Show had cool bands play every week. Merv was pretty hip for an older guy. I remember seeing Soft Cell sing Tainted Love on his show and many others.
RIP Griffin
Feras!!! Rio de Janeiro. Brasil. Para sempre Devo!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏
Eu amo Rio. Bom dia.
I was 14 years old in 1979 when the album " Duty Now for the Future" came out and I was hooked, thanks to my older brother who was 20 years old. Those guys are great ! So is my brother David ! ❤
Saw them in Denver in their yellow jump suits at a small venue. Great show
Those suits had to be murderballs hot, like a hefty bag.
Nothing says DEVO like being introduced by Merv Griffin!😍
Devo🤖Is what us kids needed in the 1980s🥀❤🥀
How freakin' good is this? Oh my....unbelievable.
That microphone rescue was awesome...never missed a beat.
Whenever they did lip-synced appearances on TV, they at least tried to make it interesting by using the most futuristic-looking equipment that would be impractical on stage.
Not old enough to remember but the Simmons drums seemed to be so unreliable but still used by everyone.
Yeah.. plus they already know the recording is flawless so they get to display their dancing moves and acting chops..
This album was my introduction to Devo as a 13 year old.
40 years later I am still loving this album.
Thanks, Reelin! Great footage of this band...and with Merv Griffin!? Some of the best 7 minutes I spent this day...
As good as it gets. The 80's were the best for modern and creative music.
Wow!
I got to see DEVO live twice. First they were promoting their Album OH No, It's DEVO!, then when they were promoting Total DEVO. Both concerts, were fantastic. I'm forever, a fan of their work and hope to find more early footage of them in concert.
I finally saw DEVO when they opened for Tool at Lollapalooza. Yes I think this was the ideal circumstance
I've heard of DEVO, john peel used to talk about them a lot, but this is the first time I've seen them perform. I'm sorta kicking myself. These guys were so ahead of their time.
I recorded Peel's show on British Forces Broadcasting Germany on cassette and discovered DEVO that way. Finding their debut album was another story. It was one of the first records I bought as a teenager. These memories are so vivid...
When I was a kid, my record collection was Genesis, Yes, Mike Oldfield, Black Sabbath etc, etc with the exception of one 45 which didnt quite add up.
Devo: Jocko Homo. I loved it. I knew they were good.
Jocko Homo was so, so very different for 1978. It really stands out in any era.
Jocko Homo was the first 7/8 timing piece of music I ever heard that wasn't a tango.
I remember watching this live on TV back in the day. I was so into Devo and skipped a class to watch this on TV. Long before PVR's or VCRs being common. I bought the album and in it was an order form for the hair piece. I got one but lost it after about a week. Tragedy! Ya, Merv was older (like, my age now...) but certainly was informed.
The first 2 albums by DEVO are classic....Duty Now for the Future...is in my top 10 from music out since 1967 on till 2019.
It really is amazing, and is criminal how so few people know about it.
They are not even TRYING to make it look like this is live and still people are arguing if it is or not. 😂 That was what TV shows did, you can tell they didn't like it, and never even bothered to make an effort to make it look real, they just had fun with it since they couldn't change it. To see the difference, watch them perform this song on Fridays, which seems to be the only TV show of the era that allowed actual live performances.
And the years go by this song becomes more and more revelant.
Hey. THANK YOU. One of my favorite bands of all time.
Love these guys, so ahead of their time
Thats for sure. Like 50 years. Pop has still not caught up to them.
No they weren't, they were very much OF their time. It was called New Wave for a reason. Ahead of their time and underrated are the most over and misused words when describing these old bands.
@@Johnnywhamo They were underrated and ahead of their time. They were not exactly the same as the other new wave bands. Not in chord structure, melody, or instrumentation. They were pointillists and to some extent atonal. That WAS and still is quite unique in pop and has not been done quite the same way still.
@@rman52 ….LOL, there was absolutely NOTHING unusual about their chord structure, nor their melodies nor their instrumentation. What a big giant crock of shit. We'll take one of these, what was unusual about their chord structure?
@@Johnnywhamo O.K. Beethoven... What key is whip it in ? Explain the imediate emphasis on d natural. What is the function of the early e natural? What chords does the synth entrance come in with ? What's their relationship to the song's key ? (Jeopardy theme).
Devo was a very creative bunch of guys they were great 👍
Underrated band. Love this song.
Underrated in your mind, they were world famous
@@cescorosa61 they were with whip it and beautiful world. But thats about it.
This is NOT a great song.
Loved in Australia.
Had New Traditionalists on vinyl in 1981, this video is peerless !
At their best! Bob 1 and 2, Alan and of course Gerry and Mark. Love them and what they brought to the music world
You flip on your old Sony TV one afternoon in the dawn of Reagan era and whammo! It's DEVO jerkin back and forth.
I came across this gem and still love the band. They were more cool then against most music today.
Just love these guys! So much talent and creativity. A few years earlier it was Kraftwerk's off the wall stuff and then Devo came along... love it all. So much more raw talent than today's so-called "artists!"
Can you believe ☢️Kraftwerk☢️ is still killing it🤖🤘🤖
I love how the camera cuts away whenever he starts thrusting
Lmao
I have a feeling the producer told Gerald Casale that he was absolutely not allowed to thrust at the camera and had to turn sideways lol
They showed him thrusting pretty extensively at the very end of song
Could have got distracted by the mic flub. I get the feeling they told him not to thrust and hoped he'd actually listen. Finally, screw it, he's going to keep doing it.
The year this came out I saw Devo and B-52s at the newly restored Fox Theater in Detroit….. What a night😎💥
I love the mic recovery!! ha ha ha
Man,,so ahead of there time, ,they went unplugged b4 anybody,,,,the Mic drop lol...sings into the stand, ,love it,love devo
As a member of the “church of the sub-genius” ... I can say that I am entitled to my precious slack. Bob Dobbs would be very proud of this performance.
May I offer you some frop to smoke while you consider how to continue your slack.
Fantastic band.
most underrated band of the 80's.
I like when there is more social commentary. They are so good with irony and sarcasm. Their outfits are always a statement though.
The look of 5 Atomic Bomb Test- Mannequins.
GREAT INTERVIEW
one of their best albums!
The NuTrad tour show was the most awesome live performance from a musical group. The showing of all their videos to date, then the curtain drawing away and revealing the "Temple of Devo", the treadmills which they used superbly. Then the music! During this era, they put on the best shows, they didn't stand there and play. They were active. They filmed a show with multiple cameras, but tragically, there was a fire at the film processing center and they were destroyed. A true tragedy
Honestly one of their best songs.
Such a groundbreaking band. Should be in RR HOF.
Fun and awesome. Great music.
1982 - I saw Devo and B 52s in Detroit- I was 16- crazy night👍🏻😁
And yes, they still are in the standard rotation
I had one of those small Casio keyboards. Never thought of attaching it to my arm.
Leave it to Devo!
I had one of those arms and I never thought to attach it to a keyboard.
LJ B yeah looks like a PS -1
I Love Devo❤
Love this!! Devo was instrumental in shaping my musical tastes in high school -- thanks, boys!
Great album!
Not one instrument plugged in. Lol
I was just noticing that!

Devo mi favorite band .From Easter Island Chile Hello .....
so glad I saw and watched this clip , Yes I have almost every Dvo and Rare 12" on Vinyl
I got dragged to see Devo on this tour. Had no interest. I was more of a Clash type. But man, what a show! I still remember to this day - Tampa Jai-Alai Fronton 1982.
The Clash... another of my all time favorite bands!! Atom Tan, baby!!
And Jai-Alai is gone now too :(
At the time I was completely aware of DEVO because my dad had gone to see them in concert and bought a VHS tape with their videos, which my sister and I rewatched about a dozen times. I only knew The Clash through "Rock the Casbah" which is really not indicative of their style, especially their early stuff. I love DEVO, but The Clash are like top ten bands of all time (Sorry Kurt Cobain, but 'Sandinista' IS a great album.)
Arrgh! You were lucky to see that! I saw Triumph and then The Police/ Joan Jett & Blackhearts @ Lakeland Civic Center in early "82, but I never had the chance to see Devo at that time..
Seen the Clash, the Jam loadsa times, the Damned, Adam Ant, the Cure all back in the day, but Devo doing two sets on the Freedom of choice tour at Southampton UK has always been a benchmark gig. Had all the vinyl back then too......
I like how at 3:34 Jerry knocks the mic off the stand, sings into the stand, then recovers to sing into the mic he's holding!!! Gotta love those old shows where they made the performers lip-synch and it still got screwed up!!
DEVO music is better than most of the music on the top of the pop charts today. No auto-tune or drum machine, and beautiful hair:)
DEVO. Well ahead of their time. Looking back, I think many more can appreciate their amazing skill, creativity, and performance. A favorite band for many years. I have all the albums!
And remember, in 1982 Times’ Man of The Year was The Computer.
I loved this album in 1982 and used to play it all the time on my Walkman. My basketball coach used to make fun of me for listening to Devo.
Very nice!
So ahead of their time .
Jerry with that mike grab. Totally pro.
Nice mic catch and save on the left at about 3:35 .Love Devo.
Holy shit. That was so smooth I thought it was deliberate.
Ratch & Clank Rift Apart brought me here. Thanks for the fun soundtrack, Mark Mothersbourgh!

Dammmmmnnnnnn thats cold
So many obvious professional musicians who have a loyal fan base.. amazing how legit playing Rock Band is and the powers of suggestions can alter your mind, hypnotized by creating your “self image” to be on stage, that big screen tv you had to have from Best Buy, you know what I mean..?!.. seriously easy being up on that platform, bustin out sweet action while your fans are jerking back & forth!! Some real couch potatoes am I right?!! Lol then darn it all, your shut down by the parents who set limit on your PlayStation 😭 drop mic
Oh yeah I’m talking about the critics
LMAO...holy shit that is arctic.
The only thing better than DEVO, is DEVO at 1.25x speed!
I recall watching this when it aired. Merv Griffin, like Mike Douglas, was always respectful of artists, even the more "off kilter" ones.
