In 78, Devo were among the best rock bands of the time. As years went n on they lost their rock edge and leaned into the more electronic aspects of their sound, but those first two albums are absolutely amazing. As close to perfection as was possible at the time.

People watching this concert over 40 years later who weren't around back then have no idea how brilliant this was. It wasn't just a concert; it was *performance art* with very Dada-esque overtones. Even the interview they did between concert halves was priceless; they stayed in character as they answered questions about "de-evolution." The first time I ever saw DEVO, my first thought was "These guys are clearly college educated."
What is also stunning is their use of wireless technology, which was not common back then. Most groups were still tripping on wires into the early to mid 90s. They had their guitars hooked up to wireless transmitters so they could move around the stage freely. In some parts of the concert they had wires going from the guitar outputs to the transmitters tucked under their black shirts and shorts.

They were intellectual without being "artsy"... they were just brilliant. And you could say they came along at the perfect time.( something I always say about Adam and the Ants who was so GREAT live)
But Devo was so far ahead of their time ANYtime would have been the perfect time.
I saw this tour and the 'conveyor belt' tour... absolutely phenomenal

@@jmorra This is indeed a great show, but if you really want to experience Devo at their most transcendent peak, search UA-cam for their performance at the Palladium in Dallas, TX on August 3, 1979. The following night's show is also up on YT, but the Aug. 3 set sounds better, and the performance itself is absolutely incendiary. They do most of the songs from this set, plus a bunch from the Duty Now LP and 5-6 unreleased tunes as well. The recording captures the music videos that the band projected onstage before the show, too. A must-hear for any Devo fan.
Three other really phenomenal sets available on YT: November 3, 1978 at the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis (professionally recorded by Warner Bros. but never formally released), November 10, 1978 at the Old Waldorf in SF (taken from a fantastic sounding radio broadcast), and July 17, 1980 at the Orpheum in Boston (same as above).

This concert is part of a series of live concerts that were filmed for French television.
The name of the show was "Chorus", and was broadcast on Sunday morning.
It was the only program where you could listen to all these artists and groups that made the late '70s a period of extraordinary musical and scenic creativity.
I was 16 years old in 1978 and I never missed a show. Since I had no money, I recorded the concerts on cassettes and listened to them over and over again.

@@Frilouz79 - In Caracas, Venezuela, we had a similar show on _Canal Cinco_ (which was the station’s name, on top of it broadcasting over channel 5), which aired late on Sunday nights, I think-late on a weekend night, at any rate-called _La Musica Que Sacudió el Mundo,_ and it used to re-air some episodes of _Chorus,_ in addition to episodes of music shows from the Netherlands, Spain, Uganda, Brazil, all over the world, as well as some local shows. (Queen playing at the Poliedro was a highlight.)
The point is, _Canal Cinco_ was kinda the arts channel, a sort of PBS, with state financing but run independent of-and often counter to-the state, and boy, in hindsight what a glorious time the ‘70s were for popular art: everyone breaching class and race and gender barriers, during which time transgressive art could have mass appeal and bring people together AND invite them to think.
I don’t think we’ve had that feeling globally in some time … it got squashed in the ‘80s, with studios cranking out mindless drivel again, but it saw a brief resurgence again in the ‘90s, only to quickly get buried again under pablum. We’re overdue for another global cultural renaissance … at least, I _hope_ there’s another one coming soon!
Anyway, sorry for the long reminiscence mixed in with a little agitprop … mostly I wanted to thank your compatriots for the excellent music show, but also it’s nice to correspond with someone who might remember the mood of the ‘70s. It was so palpably different from the mood of the last 40 years. I feel kinda bad for folks born in the ‘80s or later who’d have no sense-memory of earlier decades, of a time when it felt we were already living in the future, and on the cusp of great things.
Again, I hope we see a renaissance of that feeling soon. It was nice to live in Caracas and feel like, across the world, other people were on the same page about bringing the world together into a better future.

What a groundbreaking envelope pushing band who knew how to put on a stage show. Great performance artists who could master their instruments and already post punk in 1978 when the punk genre as a whole was at a fledgling stage. Totally in a league of their own and well ahead of the pack. Outstanding band often not given the recognition they desrve.

I’ve never been big on the usage of labels, but if a label must be applied to DEVO, wouldn’t “proto-punk” apply a bit more accurately than “post punk”? They were doing this stuff as early as 1973, though they didn’t become well known (outside of Northern Ohio) until ‘77.
I dunno. Personally I think the only label that truly describes DEVO is… DEVO.

I remember this being covered by Rock et Folk mag, and there was even a centerfold ''poster'' of the group - Devo had deeply impressed the French press and the guys from Bazooka (proto-punk arts collective who had made more than an impact on the pages of Libération of all papers in France...), they even started ''processing'' and ''reprocessing'' Devo's iconic image. I recall some pages by Kkrist Mirror, which definitely had these ''early industrial'' undertones to them. Back then i was 15 and it really scared us highschool teens about the future to come. Now, here it is, it's the future we've been living for and, guess what - DEVO were right.

It stands to reason that a band like DEVO would be expert at dealing with hecklers. They were brave enough to bring this look, sound, and philosophy into the public eye as early as 1973, in Ohio of all places. I’m sure they must have known from the get-go that they were going to get some backlash, especially in those pre-punk days when “serious rock fans” were far less tolerant of anything that deviated from the usual bedenimed fare of the day.
On top of being highly intelligent, original, and tight, DEVO had big, round, planet-sized *BALLS*

👀☠️🎇☠️👁️👁️☢️🎸

    • @Shikta-poobah67

Yeah, the whole labeling thing gets rather tedious and irrelevant at a certain point. DEVO were just DEVO. They informed punk, and conversely punk informed them (especially when they relocated to Los Angeles and saw the Screamers in action)… but were they really a ‘punk band’? Personally I think slapping that label on them is confining and dismissive, even if it’s meant as a compliment. DEVO predated punk, and shared more in common with what came in punk’s wake than with the initial movement.
Again, labels are tedious. People place far too much emphasis and importance on them.
