My dad taught me to eat sardines. He was surprised that such a young girl liked them with onions and tabasco sauce. I'm no longer young, but I still love sardines. Bless you.
I ate them as a child too. But right out of the can. I haven’t had them in a while so I figured I’d look up some recipes to try to spruce them up, other than just eating them from the can. It’s nice when parents introduce their children to different things like that.
Interesting facts. Always like the stories and pictures. I am glad you had a meal you enjoy. To each his own. Difference in people is what makes for interesting lives. Stay well: Stay happy!
I have been happily eating sardines all my life. I am 72 years old. They have always been a favorite since I was a child. I have tried every brand that has been available in the eastern part of the US. (King Oscar being my current favorite, though I have been given cans from Spain, Portugal and Italy, that were excellent.) I even enjoyed them on Italian bread with Gorgonzola cheese. Your sandwich is beautiful. I can’t wait to make it Thank you. Sardines are awesome!
My dad used to make himself sardine sandwiches when I was a kid in the 70's. I always ate them out of the can but a few years ago while visiting him he made one for me. Hooked I was, no pun intended. My style is on toasted rye or pumpernickel with a slice of sweet onion and some hot or dijon mustard and a spritz of Tabasco.
I live in Canada Toronto to be exact but my dad loved fishing and my mum liked sardines; there's a high end restaurant over here where you can spend a fortune on grilled sardines based on the Dalmatian coast. The one fish that is not high in mercury overfished etc. Your method is totally cool; my mum ate them on sourdough with a bit of mustard my Dad and I totally the full Monty what a lovely channel my friend!!!!!
Now that is more of a UK Sunday evening supper, that's quite common here in jolly old England, we have sardines on toast preferably the ones in tomato sauce, with a drizzle of creamed horseradish on the top once they have been grilled and I tell you it's the best thing in the world!
Ooo, I LURV tinned mackerel or sardines in tomato sauce mashed up with black pepper and tabasco and spread on buttered toast. BUT I have never tried it with horseradish, so thanks for the tip!
Here in Canada Dijon mustard a possibility but horseradish totally!!!!!!! In my Dad's country of origin yes, you would grill the fish straight out of the sea a salad boiled potato ... ok probably some feta cheese really doesn't matter .... oceans of flat leaf green stuff ... loved yr comment.!!!!
All this time I thought I was the only one that loves sardines. I love them just the way you prepared them but I also love in a pasta dish I prepare. God bless you.
YES!!! the easiest thing any kind of pasta I grate lemon zest and some juice don't over do the olive oil and wilt what ever green stuff in the fridge; some kind of garlic bound to appear no brainer for a lazy cook like me ... which reminds me need to walk the dog this is fast food at its best. Great comment!!
I would probably give the toast a slather of mayonnaise, and then a squeeze of both lemon juice and vinegar to cut the richness. I love sardines! Oh, my grandma taught me always to wash the dishes in cold water, to get rid of the fishiness
What a great teacher. I would love to hear you talk on a good cozy night of story telling. Tomorrow I'm trying sardines for the first time. But now, I will have the history behind it because of you.
The brand that you used for these has got to be one of the best. I once heard that sardines are the most perfect food you can eat. I definitely will try this --it looks delicious. My "not-so-pleasant" memory was when my dad used to eat Limburger Cheese when I was a child. My mother would run and take cover too. Lol
Great info I never knew about ...I Love them too ....was introduced to Sardines on toast many years ago in a hotel in Jamaica for breakfast. My family and I have never stopped eating them since then ...it's a staple in our diet .....
I am also a sardine fan, great to see you also enjoy them. Sometimes you can find Riga Sprats in some of the dollar store types of places, at a nice discount, at full price grocery stores they typically get get priced along with the "higher" end stuff such as King Oscar. They come in a flat round tin, and are tasty regardless of what they are priced at. If you find them cheap, buy a couple cans then go back and buy the rest :)
Thanks Jim your recipe looks excellent. I was just eating sardines from the can which I enjoyed but it looks like a toasted sandwich with everything you placed on it would be excellent! Will try it out!
Jim, your video made me smile. You and Freda are of my parent's generation. My father loved sardines as much as you do and my mother detested sardines as much as Freda.
My husband like sardines in olive oil too. I love how you made an open faced sandwich with them on toast with tomatoes & red onion. Might try serving them to him like that. Thanks!
@@JimForeman if you're doing this Sicilian style and have a food processor use a bit of left over bread for texture I grow heirloom tomatoes on my balcony love the dish that way!!! Usually get fennel rather than celery like the subtle anise flavour. That one's a classic!!!
Again another great vid from Jim! I think I'll buy a half a dozen cans in the morning...my weekly Sunday morning grocery shopping time...Crown Prince are the best!!!!
I love sardines too and they are very healthy. I sprinkle fresh chopped dill on mine and add a little lemon juice. The best sardines I've had were in Lagos, Portugal - beautifully grilled. I even found a shop in Lisbon that only sold different tins of sardines. The walls were lined with them.
Love the comments to see how everyone is eating it! In Hungary where I grew up we were given this for afternoon snack. A piece of toast with a couple of sardines lightly pressed on with a fork. Mmmmm!
I like sardines on saltines with yellow mustard. That's how my father ate them while my mother was hiding in another part of the house. I have to wait to eat them till my husband goes some where else. Ha! ha!
My father did the exact same thing with sardines and Saltine crackers with a dab of mustard on top. I think I’ll introduce my sons to this. You should have seen how much they enjoyed chicken gizzards Chicago Style when they first tasted those.👌
Sardines are killer. I usually eat the mustard variety straight from the can. I've never thought to make a sandwich using them. This looks so good I'll have to try it
thanks for the added sardine lore!......gonna make these tomorrow.....the tomato and onion has me wanting to add a few capers!.....thanks for the wine tip, as well!....
God bless you Jim, I've watched most of your videos, and tried and loved a bunch of your recipes, and have learned a bunch, but I'm afraid I'll have to pass this one by, but I loved watching anyway!! My granny used to eat them right out of the can, they had mustard on them, it seems like they even had the heads on them. But I can't remember for sure. Thanks for the video!! Take good care
You are right, some of the smaller variety were canned with the heads on but the bones are soft enough to be edible, like salmon bones. A good source of calcium.
I love sardines and always interested in different ways to prepare them. I been hearing that sardines are suppose to be very good for you now health wise . I will be trying your toast recipe . I might add a little of sour cream before placing the sardines on. Sour cream and sardines also makes a good sandwich as well.
Yes sardines and grits do go together very well that’s. Especially if you slightly fry thr grits on one side until the grits are a little crunchy add the sardines with melted butter then plate them up. Delicious
That really looked good enough to try , i used to carry em on the road with me for a good nutritious meal in a pinch . I liked the brand Wild Catch they were a bit pricey but easier on the nostrils in a truck cab . Well thanks again mr Jim for a good idea .
nice video. hey Jim i remember about 30 or 40 years ago sardines use to be a lot skinnier and smaller and really packed in and sense they were a lot smaller there were a lot more in the can. now they appear fat and only a few in a can. have you noticed this and if so do you know why this is? cheers!
My dad taught me to eat sardines. He was surprised that such a young girl liked them with onions and tabasco sauce. I'm no longer young, but I still love sardines. Bless you.

I've been planning to make Pasta con le Sarde - Sicilian-Style Pasta with Sardines and Fennel but just haven't gotten around to it.

Nutritionally speaking, sardines in olive oil are pretty much a perfect food. And sooooo tasty1

Sardines were my late father's favourite too. My brother, sister and I loved them too, mum hated them.
Love me some sardines and oysters also
