Growing up Italian-American, my grandpa used to feed me a Sicilian lunch dish with whole salted sardines, raw onion, red wine vinegar, and olive oil on homemade bread. You’d eat it like bruschetta. It was absolutely delicious, I fell in love with it. I’ve loved sardines ever since I was young. As a guilty pleasure I eat them straight from the can sometimes. They are not only delicious and healthy, but dynamic in what ways you can prepare them. Definitely a tremendously underrated food item that’s dear to my heart.
Straight from the can! So I'm not the only one. Super healthy. 22g of protein (?!) for single 4.4oz serving. Lots of potassium, too. I've tried several different brands over the years. I _always_ avoid the ones that are packed with olive oil since it's a virtual certainty that the oil is 3rd rate... and even possibly rancid (a problem that's often encountered _and_ illegal) The best tasting canned sardines I've found are the ones that come in the _Nuri_ brand.
I lived in a small fishing village in the south of Spain where they fished sardines. Locals call them the "King of the Sea". All the local bars served toasted sardine sandwiches. I've had them fresh off the boat cooked on driftwood fires. Still my favourite seafood.
I spent 3 weeks in Portugal, and whole freshly caught Sardines (6" to 8" long ), charcoal grilled to perfection, was the starter for every single meal, both in peoples homes and at restaurants. I fell in love with Portugal after that.
60 years old and tried my first sardine last week. A gentleman from the senior recreation center gave a can to my sister. I just stared at it for a while. Lol. I found the strength to try a simple sardine salad (like tuna salad) and OMG I FELL IN LOVE! This recipe looks delicious. Going to try it.
I’ve been buying canned sardines for years now. If the power goes out here in California everyone gets to eat, including our dog and cats. Sardines are good for everyone.

Sardine sandwiches are delicious - but not simple to make. Dump a can of oily sardines on some sliced white bread and you get a water-logged, greasy cat-food sandwich. You need to drain the fish, use crisp dry toast, add fresh greens, onion slices, plus lemon and dill to cut the oil. Plus something as a contrast on the side like coleslaw or pea-soup. Otherwise, just eat this fish straight out of the can on a Ritz cracker, maybe with a shot of hot sauce or Siracha. Also, anchovies, oil included, with fresh ground pepper makes an excellent pasta sauce.
My dad’s classic Trinidadian sardine sandwich consist of breaking down, getting rid of the gut and bones out of the sardines. Chop green onions, lime, red onions, tomatoes, culantro, scotch bonet pepper, mix with ketchup, salt n pepper. In a small skillet heat olive oil and sour over everything. Mix well and place on toasted bread with lettuce. RIP Dad.
I'm a generation older than thee, Sam, but I grew up in a household in Minnesota in which Mom was a Norwegian immigrant & Dad was a Swedish immigrant (both arriving in the US about 3 years before the US entered WWII). Sardine sandwiches with mayo, romaine lettuce & dill pickles were staples in my childhood. HOWEVER, the arugula is a REALLY sweet gastronomic nuance. "Tak, tak," as my parents would have said! I'm buying & prepping arugula for my sandwich tomorrow!
Where has this sandwich been my whole life? I love sardines but the thought of them in a sandwich was never even a thought. When I saw this recipe, I immediately wanted to make it and I did. You brought back some amazing memories of my Uncle Mike he would rent a cottage in the Hamptons and took my sister and I there one summer made me a sardine sandwich on white bread with a coke ..that was it I was hooked!
Arugula is called "Rocket" in most countries. Its flavor is a unique mix of bib-lettuce, unsalted butter, ground black pepper, and slightly bitter Italian Radicchio. Make sure its fresh with live stems (snip the brown stem-tips off if you have too). Arugula turns into mush quickly, like spinach and dill, so store it in the fridge in a bowl of cold water so the stems can hydrate the leaves, extending its lifespan. Arugula makes an excellent salad, but only add oil, vinegar, and herbs. Other dressings will kill it. It's great with pear slices & blue cheese. Buy a big bag and experiment. You will be pleased. Arugula is better than any other micro-green, I promise.
I gave some sardines to my 12 year old granddaughter and she loves them. She comes home from school and likes them for a snack. We've been trying different kinds to see which ones we like the best.

If I have left-over salmon or tuna, I combine with sardines, and I will make fish salad sandwiches. Red onion diced, mayo, etc. Basically like a tuna salad sandwich. I also put finely chopped 3 color coleslaw in the mix. Adds a crunch. Sardines, and salmon, are probably the safest/healthiest fish .

I am half Swedish and half Sicilian, so aged fish in a can is in my blood. However, growing up, most of my friends were Jewish, and they ate almost all of the same canned aged fish that I did. Of course they didn't use lingonberries, or sweet pickled beets like me, and they used more delicious chewy rye bread and horseradish than my family did, but otherwise, every snack and dish was interchangeable, and so good to eat. These are very fond memories for me, sitting around the table, snacking with my old friends.
I'm 84 and have been eating sardine sandwiches since early teens. Just butter white bread, add a thick slice of sweet onion, sardines, salt and enjoy.......delicious!
I am half-Swedish American; so these canned oily-fish, in any form - cured, smoked, or pickled, is a taste straight out of my grandmother's kitchen. The salty oil is perfect with lemon & dill. The bones almost melt like ghosts in your mouth. There's nothing like it - except for IT. This sandwich you made looks tasty & satisfying. My favorite one however is pickled herring on Swedish hardtack with butter, aged-cheese, onions, a sliced of boiled potato, & some sweet lingonberries on the side - plus a beer. But your oily little toasty is a perfect after-school snack. To make it an entire lunch, maybe add a bowl of yellow pea-soup and some pickled beets & cucumbers on the side. Now that's a "real" Baltic meal. I love this sandwich. Thank you. Skol!
I made this again, this time I fried the roquette salad with the sardine oil and as I had some green onion left so added a few slices. Added tomato to the sandwich too....
My version Seeded sourdough toast, butter both insides, Roquette, Baby Spinach, Truffle Mayo, Garlic Aioli, Hot English Mustard, Beetroot, Cracked Black Peppercorn, Canned Sardines. ( Makes 4 sandwiches ) -- Yes it is heaps hot , sweet & very spicy, but that's what I'm used to & that's the way I love it ❗️ ❗️
This is my go to sandwich at least once a week!! I also add yellow mustard, and sweet onion. SO GOOD! ....and an excellent source of omega 3. Thanks for sharing this!
Thank you so much for posting this. Best sandwich ever. Never even had sardines before but this looked so good I HAD to try it. Now close to a year later I still make these regularly 🤤
I made this sandwich this morning and it was out of this world !! Never enjoyed sardine that much but this one was really tasty. I rubbed some raw garlic on the toast - pan tumacat style - as well and it added a nice flavor. Thank you for your wonderful channel and recipes!! Awesome job cameraman !
I feel like sardines are one of the few items that give you your moneys worth. Put pico de gallo on a $1.34 can of dines and you got yourself a hell of a snack. Now put the same pico de gallo on a can of Nuri dines or Ramon Pena and you got yourself paradise.
Filipino here, spanish heritage....my family love this stuff! The sardines in olive oil. I'll try this, i'm pretty sure it's gonna be really good! Thanks.
Reminds me of my Dad. Back in the 40's, 50's and 60's, working Men ate a lot of Sardines. Lunch Boxes were frequently stocked with can of Sardines, Crackers, Vienna Sausage and such. My Dad introduced me to sardines and how to eat them in various ways. One was a sandwich, somewhat like you made. Toast, Mayo, shredded lettuce, a thin slice or two of tomato and some sardines. or.... He would drain sardines and chop them up in a bowl with a little mayo, mustard, chopped onions and chopped jalapenos, and eat it on crackers like a chicken salad. And then the customary sardines on cracker and a few drops of hot sauce. Some of the newer varieties of Sardines today with peppers, Mediterranean seasonings, Dijon Mustard, etc, make them a little less scary to the average person today who has never really eaten them.
Yes. Absolutely. Had a can of sardines, made this exact recipe with some garlic addition... amazing. Will add to my arsenal of lunch meals. Thank you, sir
When I was small my mother put butter on my sandwiches, that's what got me hooked on this guys recipe. I made but used spinach, no arugula, thin sliced onion and extra lemon. He was right, its got to have lemon. What a sandwich!!!!! FOOD OF GODS!!!
Same here. Balogna, mustard and butter. Butter makes it better. New England clam shacks have Lobster rolls with butter and mayonnaise. Absolutely delicious!
It's been decades since I ate tinned sardines. Had to be in the mood for them. Always used to open them up and remove the backbone first though. Just me?
Hello from UK. I grew up eating mashed sardines in tomato sauce on toast. I now enjoy the more grown up version of sardines in olive oil (still mashed tho with spines removed) with chopped preserved lemons and green olives on sourdough crusty bread toasted. Lovely ❤

Now that's a "real" Baltic meal. I love this sandwich. Thank you. Skol!
allways keep a King Oscar in my kitchen, the tomato one is good too, love from norway
Smoked oysters also makes a good sandwich.
Yes! Smoked or just plain canned oysters one chewy, whole grain buttered toast with a mug of strong, creamy, sweet black tea! Heaven.

@@williamwallace8945 Thats not how its pronounced.
D Howard are you sure???
Especially one's from Asian estuaries.
I made this again, this time I fried the roquette salad with the sardine oil and as I had some green onion left so added a few slices. Added tomato to the sandwich too....
I could care less that Sam has a triple type A personality. I like his recipes. I am not here to get pastoral care. I am here for the good eats.
Its actually couldn't care less.
Whats a triple type A persona?
Couldn’t
Toasted sardine sandwiches are not wack. They're awesome. Perfect weekend lunch. Quick delicious weeknight dinner. Haven't tried it with arugula yet. Sounds great.
My favorite canned sardine brand. This man was on a mission!
King Arthur is the hidden gem of sardines , cheap and one of the best tasting !!!!!
Thank you so much for posting this. Best sandwich ever. Never even had sardines before but this looked so good I HAD to try it. Now close to a year later I still make these regularly 🤤
At least he didn`t kick the dog during the video !
I have never had sardines but this man made that sandwich look so good that I wanna go and make it.
@Tommy Igoe what does it taste like please explain ?

You don't know what you're missing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eating Aged fish is a 10,000 year old human culinary tradition. Your time has come to try it 😄
Sardines are under rated even better when you put pico de Gallo on them
I feel like sardines are one of the few items that give you your moneys worth. Put pico de gallo on a $1.34 can of dines and you got yourself a hell of a snack. Now put the same pico de gallo on a can of Nuri dines or Ramon Pena and you got yourself paradise.
Sardines can’t be underrated. Ib a scale of 1 to 10 they’re a negative 20,000
That sounds good
I love sardines, not many do but my God I love them.
Filipino here, spanish heritage....my family love this stuff! The sardines in olive oil. I'll try this, i'm pretty sure it's gonna be really good! Thanks.
I love Filipino Sardines in Spicy Tomato Sauce. Norwegian and Portuguese canned sardines don't offer this flavor.
Reminds me of when I was in New Jersey. Even the ministers had this attitude.
I think his “ angry Dad” attitude is hilarious 😂 😂😂😂
I love how he throws everything and swears.
@@Nenlothiel Ditto! He’s real.
I find it annoying, like a mosquito sound in my ears when i'm sleeping.
Yes. Absolutely. Had a can of sardines, made this exact recipe with some garlic addition... amazing. Will add to my arsenal of lunch meals. Thank you, sir
Toast,sardines,slice of onion,mustard, & black pepper
That really looks amazing. I love sardines and anchovies. I’m making this tomorrow.
Love that he has to throw everything around as hard as he can.
I’m definitely making this!
You ever have canned sardines? Good cause I’m gonna eat the whole sandwich
C’est la vidéo la plus stressante et désarmante que j’ai vu depuis longtemps
Just me?
Charlie Coombs probably...
Everyone's making excuses when making sardines, why?? It is perfect comfort food!
Hello from UK. I grew up eating mashed sardines in tomato sauce on toast. I now enjoy the more grown up version of sardines in olive oil (still mashed tho with spines removed) with chopped preserved lemons and green olives on sourdough crusty bread toasted. Lovely ❤
Why do you throw things instead of placing them?
@@808allday7 who said I couldn't handle it? I asked a fucking question. Simple.
I believe the reason is written right on his shirt
@@jaythree1976 actually this was initially a rhetorical question. The reason is that this dad is trying to look cool for the young people or like many he hasn't matured emotionally.
Ed Terryberry ohhh gotcha
Cuz he can
I’m sitting here at 2am eating a can of sardines wishing I had some arugula and Japanese Mayo. Yay 👏🏻
Me too except I’m high asf 😄😂🤣
I've broken my ankle and trying to get in high calcium foods and thought I'd give this a go. I was pleasantly surprised, the extra lemon really makes a difference!
I never thought about making a sandwich with sardines, and I've been eating sardines my whole life.. I learned about sardines from my father, who loved them..😂😂
TOASTED BREAD WITH SARDINES, SPINACH, MAYO, HOT CHILI PEPPER, PICKLES AND CHERRY TOMATOES, THE WINNER, MMMM MAKES MY MOUTH WATER.
Really love the sandwich the dad Is kind of a deuch ...needs to relax
The ad in the middle of the video really did it for me.
My whole life I've been looking for a way to eat sardines, other than out of the can. Arugalla is the the secret. You're awesome Sam..
Does the camera kid know there is such a thing as a zoom button?
I did this and added red onion. soooo good! Thanks for the idea.
Sardines are quick for me. Raw onion lettuce and vinegar on toast. No stress.
Jim Farrell I'm going to try this.
Oh dude...the canned sardine companies should be paying you royalties...you completely sold them (at least to me). Thanks
It's a damn good brand if not the best
Pregnant lady here about fix myself this. And I have the same exact tin of sardines at home. What a lucky day ❤
Yes! Sardines are hellagood and under appreciated ( and, P.S., are so good for you). Thanks for making a good sandwich for us, Sam.
