In the article, Tesla said that they could design a NEW automobile for developing markets. If it comes with basic features, if its locally manufactured and if its a sub 4 meter sized car, we can realistically expect it to be around 25 lakhs.
Tesla spends ~0% for ads or marketing. They just started now for ads. New model 2 is a compact sedan or hatchback, Tesla's main product is its giga factory and its efficiency. And Tesla is reducing its production cost per car month after month. so yes ,$25000 ~ 20 lakhs car is possible.
No its highly impossible unless Tesla ALREADY had a fully functional manufacturing plant with all of the required parts being either super low cost or made in house in their own plant. Also considering the existing players and the politics it’s highly improbable. And on top of that Tesla blueprint is not sustainable for the majority of Indian car buyers. Best luck !

And planning to use robots for repeated jobs, so YES it's possible, as still the existing players are least automated (10-30%) and least efficient. And Tesla is one of the vertically integrated companies, so it becomes the only most profitable player in BEV production.

The only way tesla is coming to India is if the government waives off their entire capital expenditure of setting up here. Indian market is volatile and no company that is already burning cash is going to setup here unless they have a good understanding on how the market reacts

Those know Elon Musk how Sanki he's, he can launch Tesla for 20L to compete with the Indian car makers and also as a introductory price.
Chinese car makers are manufacturing good competitive EVs in China, which was affecting Tesla sales there, what Elon Musk did was dropped Tesla prices to 50% in China just to compete Chinese car makers. You’ve made some excellent points about the Indian Government’s policies around local manufacturing and EVs - is there any way you could determine Reuters’ source for this information? That might provide a clue as to why Reuters thinks Tesla could release a ₹2 million EV in India e.g., who from Tesla said so etc. Tesla does have excellent manufacturing processes and low advertising/marketing costs. So in theory it is possible that a cheaper car might be released in India and then sent out to the rest of the world. By the way, Reuters is pronounced roy-ters not rawu-tters.

Even if they launch those in India they won’t sell more than 20,000 units. India is not a big car market.

Definitely it will be a new car. The reason is that it is more cost effective for a company develop a new model than to modify a car that is suited for american and European terrrains (considering that India is a very unique and value-oriented market for foreign manufacturers)
Tesla has said it in their annual meeting.. which is called nextgen platform .. the other side of it is with next gen manufacturing process like 48V architecture.. more use of casting with new steering system it will be cheaper to make even existing cars and use of tesla bots. Also not to forget as per sandy munro tesla is already Les than 100 dollar per kilowatt and their next gen drive train without any rear earth magnet will be cheaper than 1000 dollar so I see that they can manufacture a car in INR5-6lakh and then with taxes and profits they can sell it at 20lakh no issue ..
Remember tesla does not have marketing wing or dealer network to eat their profit

9:55 Option 3 is what's going to happen. That's because since many years Tesla wants to make a truly affordable car that helps them achieve their target of selling 20 million cars per year by 2030. They will launch a hinted "Model 2" at $20000 to $25000 that will use new manufacturing techniques like single body dye-cast stamping machine. Meaning the whole body of the car will be made with a single sheet of metal. They already have done this with the Model 3 and Y where the front and rear parts are made up of a single sheet of metal instead of 100s of parts. Now they just want to make it more efficient to achieve this price

The first smartphones were very expensive then as new variants came the prices got cheaper to a point where everyone has one. Similarly Tesla started with a $250k sports car called the Roadster made a few thousand of them. Next they made the Model S Sedan which aimed to compete with luxury sedans which received a lot of awards and certifications priced below $100k. Then they moved to the next platform the Model 3 which was the first mass market EV and is currently priced below $40k. Making EV's accessible to everyone has always been their goal. Otherwise they would not be open sourcing their patents to let out carmakers copy them while also making superchargers available to non-Tesla EV's

I think tesla has a very lean production process and heavily dependent on robotics. The economics may work as far as cheap labor is concrrned.

As u said. Software is what makes Tesla a Tesla. If u remove autopilot and turned it into a level 2 adas, you will save lots of cost upfront as Tesla spends more money on R&D to make the software rather than investing into hardware. So yes , model 3 can be produced and sold at around 20-25 lacs.
Tesla has already spent on its software. It already has a sw team, so even if they don't give features here, its not a huge savings, rather its like cross subsidizing. In US, they sell FSD feature for $10000, so already $33000 is with only ADAS.

When elon promised that they'll have complete adas in 2017-18 to drive without a driver, still they are not able to do it even in USA, where they have huge ass roads and minimal traffic. Adas is only helpful in lane keep assist and autonomous braking, if done correctly, in India.

I think its possible for tesla to develop a new model similar to dimensions of baleno-creta by slashing features which are not required in indian markets and by cost cutting.

i think tesla's auto pilot costs them more than you assume. it's not just a piece of software ready to ship. there's additional hardware cost for tons of sensors and actuators not just camera. also allocating server capacity and providing region specific software support. software developer salaries at Tesla with relevant competency would not enjoy same cheap labor as that of manufacturing.
by not having autopilot they also cut short on money spent to ensure additional compliance procedures which are anyways nonexistent in India.
7:20, incorrect. Tesla's onboard computers for FSD(Full self driving) and Autopilot use tons of computational power and are very expensive. Around $10k-$15k. The real hardware for Autopilot is the computational hardware, not the cameras/LIDAR. These aren't your run of the mill smartphone hardware to run in-car touchscreens but powerful GPUs and CPUs to compute self driving.

The biggest problem with Indian govt is that our politicians and bureaucrats are very short sighted and only care about taxes and nothing else. While China has captured the EV market and completely dominating it thanks to 0% tax imposed by government, Indian govt is still thinking how to extract money out of EV companies instead of incentivizing them to set up manufacturing plants here. Our govt is least bothered about EV adoption, hence they are decreasing the miniscule subsidy instead of increasing them at this crucial stage.
Ordinary people are not able to buy EVs because they are so expensive in India but govt is doing nothing to help with adoption. If govt removed all taxes on EVs for 5 years, it would have changed the entire landscape of automobile sector in India but that's a pipe dream with such money minded politicians in power.

Bro converting USD to INR is not so simple its according to PPP. Purchasing power parity.
PPP shows how a burger costs 5$ ( 400 ₹ ) in USA but in India it starts from 60 ₹.
So according to PPP a $ actually costs 22₹ for a overall average.
Now in India since raw parts for cars and also due to cheap labour for Tesla to manufacturer its cars PPP should be around 30-40 ₹ so cost of teslas cars would be 17,60,000 ₹ ( 44000 $ ) ( according to PPP as 40 : 1 ).

Why Indian Government do not give permission or promot to new car manufacturers?
Take the example of KTM it was a premium brand before launching a bike with Bajaj in India and now its low end bikes are one of the most popular ones. Tesla can shake hands with Tata❤.
Tesla can also sell the cars to other geographies which is price sensitive like Africa, South east Asia and also cover local demands.
At current run rate, Tesla can start with 5 Lakh cars in the first year of production and increase up to 20 Lakh till the 5th year from their Giga India and of that 75% can be considered for export. The ramp up should not be a problem as Tesla has many of its suppliers have factories in India.
While it should be kept in mind that Tesla will not develop the car in India, but in China/Berlin. Whereas, I believe the product should be developed in India as the ground clearance of Model 3 is low and India has different atmospheric conditions as compared to US/EU etc. But Giga shanghai is an absolute beast when it comes to mass production and we have seen the efficiency of Giga shanghai is highest amongst all other giga factories. Since Model 2 is a small car, the Gross margins will also be less and hence Giga shanghai makes sense but there needs to be extensive testing of model 2 in India like Tesla did for Model Y 4680 in varied atmospheric conditions.
I am being a little ambitious here, but Tesla can also set up production lines for Model 3, Y, cyber truck and Semi in India and use it explicitly for exports just like Giga shanghai takes full advantage of shipping efficiencies of China.
With Govt of India focusing on Solar panels on 1cr homes, Tesla has a very big potential market in terms of Tesla Solar and Energy solutions in the form of Mega packs.
With Major expressways having Rest areas under development and India reaching ~100% electrification stage, Tesla can install the Supercharger locations and due to smaller battery size, the utilization % will also increase and hence less super chargers need to be installed for equal/more number of cars sold.
