Hi Pranjal. Thanks for such a detailed video. We must also take into consideration the manufacturing process of Lithium Ion Batteries. While running an EV vehicle there is no pollution but it had already made a lot of pollution during manufacturing of the Lithium Ion battery.
CNG is better than EV and pure petrol. Milage=25 Km/Kg - 30 Km/Kg.
Another eco-friendly option is Hydrogen Vehicle(Green Hydrogen).

There is one more angle to assess between EV & Fuel car,
Since I buy only automatic cars and if I buy nexon automatic it is around 13 lacs then I feel it’s better to buy EV which is standard as automatic and comes in 15 lacs
Summary: if any one wants to buy automatic version of any car then better to buy EV which has standard as automatic

In second year residual saving would be rs. 2.6 lacs for ONE year, not two as you mentioned and 3rd year capital savings of rs. 1.9 lacs is again to be taken for ONE year and not three. No. Two point....I am told with two types of power generation, that is petrol engine & elec. motor repair and maintenance cost of hybrid will be higher than both, right?

I think you also need to consider major repairs and parts replacements in petrol car and importantly assuming petrol price will remain constant is a big mistake, just in recent past we’ve paid up to 125 ₹ per liter and probability of it going even higher is there. Like wise even the probability of battery price reduction by 50% or more is very possible.
    I don’t say it’s accurate but it’s a probability as you were predicting 😊

If hydrogen vehicles become a viable alternative by 2040 then there's already more than 15 years left, considering the trend of rise in petrol prices & the increasing pollution levels in the major cities, EVs might pay off.

What we really need are plug-in hybrid cars - these are basically hybrid cars, except the battery is bigger and it can be plugged in at home to charge. I live in the US and drive one that can go 30 km on pure electricity (which I charge at home every night) and then after that behaves exactly like a hybrid car. This allows for pure electric operation on my daily, around-town drives, while being a very efficient petrol car on long drives.
Too many people are looking at buying two cars - an electric car for the former purpose and a petrol car for the latter. With a plug-in hybrid, you can have both in one.

    2. R&D research and tech advancement will definitely bring down cost of battery in coming years.

  • @suril305

Most of the points are valid, except some-
    1. The upfront extra money for EV which can be kept in savings account. Usually everyone buys cars on loans and use the extra money that they have for other purposes. Most of us have an EMI which we pay month on month for the car. So yes, the argument is valid if I buy the car on 100% cash. The EMI is going to be there even for petrol/diesel/hybrid cars. So consider that you’re running the car on bank’s money and keep paying EMI for EV and run car for almost 1/10th of the cost
    2. The ever increasing fuel prices and it’s never going to stop. The break even will come in 4-5 years if you consider fuel prices @ ₹150/L
    3. I’m sure a lot of people like me will have solar panels on the terraces. And we didn’t install those solar panels to charge EV. The free EV charging serves as an added advantage of those solar panels.

If you see mileage of Honda City Hybrid is around 19kmpl on Highway and 25kmpl+ on city and highway combined, this mileage is excellent when compared to competition. And mind that I am talking about real life mileage not ARAI claimed figures. Now regarding your claim that theyre "complex macines" I agree they might sound complex buy they're not really that complex average maintainance costs have been found to be actually lower than that of petrol cars and hybrid too. Let me explain, they have a ICE that is conventional but run on low RPM throughout the sub 60 speeds (in the city) that means a very consistent performance and power is being drawn from it that actually means low wear and tear with minimal damages to the engine. Now coming to the EV part the battery is smaller than the batteries provided in a pure EV car. In the event of a battery faliure (happens atleast after 8 yrs of use) the cost of replacing battery of a hybrid drivetrain would be actually just half or one-third of what it may cost in a pure EV.

Honda city Hybrid costs significantly more than top model of Honda city Petrol, almost 20-25% higher.
So if top model of Honda city ICE costs 16 lac, Hybrid costs 20L, thanks to India government taxation policies on strong hybrids where taxes on strong hybrids are more than ICE (internal combustion engines).
As a long range traveler, naturally I shall go with petrol cars.
Government thinks that taxing strong hybrids more will cause more EV push but they don't understand the majority of population is not ready to pay huge upfront amounts for EVs.
EV is yet immature technology, costly, takes much more time to refill, has less infra, and in long run will be much more costly when battery needs replacement after 8 years etc. It further causes mental strain when one has to plan long trips.

Users who have driven EV for 150000KMs have reportedly brake pad change and no tyre change or just one. So factor in clutch, brake, tyre and other stuff. No Range reduction in both MG and Tata post 150000 so due diligence as petrol price will increase while solar cost per KW is reducing so adding solar power will eliminate or reduce TCO drastically

One more thing to consider is how these batteries work. Li-Ion battery's life depends a lot on cycles of charge and discharge. If you use it mostly in city commute and all, you can actually elongate the battery life.
Also take it into account that fossil fuels are exhaustive sources and their prices are controlled by very few people in world. They can do as they please and manipulate the economy of the world. Not even considering the environmental impact. EV accept it or not, is the future, the battery and overall tech is constantly evolving and it will get better.

You are absolutely right but there is a catch, for pure hybrid you have to spend around 15-26Lakh at least. No option around 8-10Lakh (for those jo Tiago wali range ke buyers hain).

Right calculations but overall this is a depreciable asset. jo ev lega uski montly ya yearly running automatically badh jaayegi, just like ab wo kahi local me bhi jayega jaha two Wheeler ya paidal ja sakta tha waha bhi ev leke jayega and yes this is the true fact agar ev ka cost nikalna hai to running kafi acchi honi bht jaruri hai nhi to petrol/ev hybrid kuch mt lo. (This seem the right conclusion)

Good analysis. However, you have assumed petrol cost to be constant as 100 rupees, while petrol prices in India have risen significantly over the last 10 years, and it is expected to continue to rise in the future. People generally keep a car for more than 8 years. By factoring the rising petrol cost, the whole equation changes.

There is no option available of hybrid cars at lower levels. If u compare all this calculation with tata Tiago Ev long range version then it would be more fruitful to buy an Ev.

Hey Pranjal, thanks for such elaborate analysis but I feel the concern comes again that the premium we have to pay for hybrids(especially say Honda City H-EV whose top variant commands 4L premium), is it justified to spend same based on running costs and all factors again.. I feel hybrids are still not that competitively priced to be that lucrative, could be me though

Actually you are not paying any premium price for EV . The comparison done is wrong .
Why choose the 19 Lakh version when you can get the 16 Lakh version . The difference is cosmetic which does not affect the range .
We can look at it in a different way also . Compare Tiago EV and Nexon Petrol version top variant . The picture changes upside down.

The biggest point is this - the efficiency of an electric motor to convert electricity to mechanical energy is much higher than that of an ICE. And it does not release toxic exhaust gases. It makes sense to go for an electric car. But, it would take at least 10 to 20 years for Electric cars to improve dramatically from the current state.
