Interesting to note that John Blanche painted that cover image using Citadel paints, and then highlighted with artist inks. It was the first thing I ever saw when I walked into a GW store when I was 10. Single handedly changed my life forever.
That's how I got into the hobby too! i was like 10-11 at a Hobby Town USA and bought a box with birthday money. but the one i had, had square bases with 5 holes? was that a different edition of the game?
@@jamesgaultier2949 Yes, the earlier versions of the game 'Epic Space Marine' were on square bases, this edition that Duncan has was the first to use the long rectangles for basing.
@@stephenchristiansen Valrak. He mentioned it in one of his videos. Same source as the guy who leaked everything else including the Lion coming back in the next month or so.
I remember seeing epic in the shops when I first visited in 97/98, and then warmaster following a few years later. Always loved seeing the big battles in the artwork.
These kinds of small scale figures are very easy to paint using simple techniques, like you showed here. Don't be scared of the size! You'll do fine! Core colours, brighter than normal, suitable wash, drybrush your base colour back on, then pick out a small handful of important details.
A (re)release of Epic 30/40k with todays plastic miniature tech is properbly the one thing that would get me back into the hobby after some 20'ish years :)
The cover of that box reminds me of the inside cover of the Rogue Trader rulebook I bought along with the first box of space marines ever produced back in '88. The more you looked at the picture the more subtle detail you saw. I distinctly remember a space marine with Die Slowish written on his shoulder guard.
YES. This was exactly how I got into GW games. My first box was the edition prior to this one in 97', but I still have this box as well. Simply loved this game. Thanks for visiting some old memories and congrats on 3 years!
I remember in middle school in the early nineties, my friend and his brother were super talented artists and the legend about them was they were so good they ‘painted the eyes on epic models’ 😂
3 years!!! .... omg.. btw the 80's intro there was EPIC! I was a GW store Manager in Aberdeen when Epic was released... It was such a hit on the game tables at the time.... one of my fav's
Epic and Battlefleet Gothic are the two systems I wish had caught on more (and received more models for it). My first experience with Epic 40k was "Final Liberation: Warhammer 40,000 Epic". I was disappointed to find that all the units in the video game didn't have tabletop models I could buy. Thanks for this memory renewal. 👍
Epic/Space Marine along side Rogue Trader were the games that got me into the hobby at the ripe age of 13 in the early 90’s. In my part of the USA finding minis was tough, had to mail order from the Uk, so we had to make do with a lot of proxies. We still had tons of fun! Cheers!
I got into Epic Armageddon just before the company discontinued it, but have been loving it for over a decade now. There's even enough of a 'scene' in Australia that I got to play in an EA tournament just before Covid. Welcome to God's Own Scale - have fun!
Cannot believe it has been 3 years!! Congratulations to you - absolute favourite painter and guides on UA-cam. Wishing you all the best and many more years of success! :)
Fond memories. After painting, but not playing, Rogue Trader, Space Marine (1989), the original Epic game, was my introduction to Warhammer proper. My brother and I spent countless hours on huge battles across our bedroom floor. BTW, for those interested in early wargaming, we began using Airfix Waterloo 1:72 figures, using a very dusty old copy of H.G. Wells' "Little Wars" as our rules set. That's right, the Great-Great-Grandaddy of wargaming was also the Father of SciFi (The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man etc etc) - what a legend. P.S. thanks Duncan - as what counts now as an OldBeard Oldhammer officianado, I really appreciate your vids.
I love everything about this video, in particular Duncans excitement for this game and project! Epic Space Marine was my introduction into the world of 40K back in the 90s and I still have a love for the game. I fondly remember hours long battles taking place across a decrepit old ping pong table in my basement. Good times for sure!
Yes!!! Any videos you can present for Epic / small scale games are greatly appreciated. I’ve started playing 30k/40k at small scale with friends to get massive armies onto a tiny table and it’s been a life changer. Just need to break out the paints and get the armies finished.
Congratulations on three awesome years, Duncan! Your old painting tutorials back when you were with GW taught me just about everything I needed to know when getting into the hobby. My Blood Angels would have been a weird mess if it wasn't for you!
Great to see you throw some love towards us smally scale gamers. There's an entire world of high detailed models suitable for epic scale gaming now from companies like Vanguard Minis or Onslaught Minis. Would be awesome to see you do a session with their stuff sometime in the future!
While I was never able to play it myself, I know that aspects of it were used in Battlefleet Gothic, which is my favorite minis game of all time. So, I would bet it is at least one of their best.
I got into wargaming after getting Hero quest and battlemasters for my birthday in the 90's. it came with a little sheet that showed different GW products. The epic scale looked interesting to me. That same Epic 40k box was the very first purchase that I ever did direct from GW.
This version of Epic came out while I was on my first frustration break from GW games. I'm sorry I missed it as Epic has always been my favourite game. Thanks for all the great videos over the last 3 years Duncan.
Absolutely love this. I still have my Epic 40K Ultramarine army. Dug it out of my mother's loft the other month. Got some imperial guard, ork and eldar too. Was a shame Epic didn't really take off
Ah memories, I'm showing my age here but my first GW game was Epic. Not this one though, I played Epic Space Marine, that was out years before this. These look like the same Marines, but I remember them being on square bases with 5 miniatures arranged like the 5 dots on a D6. The Land Raiders were different though, Epic Space Marine ones were more like the Heresy ones of today. Nice to see them being painted, I never went into so much detail, yours look great.
So good to see the old Epic! As one of those oldies who remember Epic, there are a couple of iconic units I’d love to see you paint! 1-Imperator titan 2- Squat Land Train! 3 - Magnus (it was this very miniature that would seduce me to love the thousands sons forever more!)
Thank you Duncan, as a middle-aged man who grew up with Games Workshop in the 90s in Britain, your retro themed videos hit me right in the nostalgia. I'm a subscriber to the DRPA site and proud to support all the brilliant, wholesome paintbrush-based joy you bring the world. Such an awesome game!! So many fond memories of playing my squat land train against orks. Such great value in a tiny package! Its almost like GW cared about their customers back then!
Omg!! This is what I have been wanting to see for so long!! I absolutely love epic 40k!! Thank you Duncan 🤠👍 fingers crossed epic will come back one day
The blue box game ‘Space Marine’ from the early 90s was what I remember most, before the whole Epic and Epic 40,000 moniker. I don’t think I ever tried painting the minis though. I even remember the original ‘Space Marine’ and ‘Adeptus Titanicus’ from the late 80s. They were my older brother’s but I inherited them. I’d left the hobby by 1997 but good to see this version which I’ve never seen before. Thanks!
Hey, Duncan. Just wanted to say what an inspiration you’ve been to me when it comes to my love for 40K. I got into 40K about six or seven years ago, and beyond the hours of lore videos I watched, I’d watch your painting videos for GW as well. And it was one video in particular, the Skitarii Ranger, that caught my eye, and introduced me to what is now my favorite faction in 40K. I didn’t have the money back then, but I swore that one day, I’d come back to that video and paint it using your methods. Now, years later, I finally do have the money to spend, and I’m just starting to buy minis for an AdMech army. And of course, I’ll be painting them like how you showed. I’m so excited to finally do it after all these years, and I just wanted to say thank you for being a king of this community. I’m so glad that you’ve found success after striking out in your own, and I hope that you find even more fame in the years to come, especially as properties like 40K are becoming more and more popular. And I will always remember: Two thin coats.
Awesome score dude! I love modern GW, but the 90s stuff is where my heart lies. I've only seen this in pictures in old White Dwarfs so it's a treat to see it like this.
Imagine being that incredibly talanted a painter, and then not drill out a single gun barrel! Joking aside, congratulations on 3 years, and here's to many more to come!
I got confused when you mentioned the release date of this, then I realised that there were earlier versions which fitted in with my own time frame. So, my first ever boxed game that I bought from GW was Adeptus Titanicus and Space marine (1988). Although I no longer have it, it was my favourite game by GW and, at 23, it was a beer and pretzels game. My girlfriend (who became my wife) also enjoyed it and I had all the factions Squats, Eldar, Chaos......So seeing you paint these just flooded my head with nostalgia as, when painted well, they looked so cool. Thank you for this Duncan.👏👏👏👏

Can't believe it's been 3 years already. Many congratulations on such a great brand and community. Really enjoyed this vid and makes me miss painting Epic and Warmaster. There was something satisfying about painting units so quickly. Excellent tips about turning up the contrast to 11 for such a small scale.
Congrats on 3 years ... Doesn't seem that long and I've never missed a video yet :D -- We used to play Epic with Rogue Trader rules on a giant table and have battles that would literally last weeks .. good times :D
Oh wow I played Imperial Guard Epic and loved it! I loved the thundering artillery and lots of Leman Russ tanks and a few super heavies rolling forward! Awe yeah bringing back memories! I had square bases though.
Its nice to see this version of the box, But my fav release was the "space marines" Epic box (the ultramarine box art version) which came had Orks (boyz, battlewagons), Eldar (guardians,Falcon grav tanks and a phantom titan), Spacemarines (marines, mk1 rhino's, Mk1 landraiders and a warlord titan) and the cardboard buildings.
One of my biggest hobby regrets was moving on my Epic armies a number of years ago. This box was my first boxed game. Amazing job and well done on the anniversary!
My nostalgia bubble has just burst!! I recieved this boxset on my 13th birthday, which is 11th March! The day you published this video!! I wish I still had this! I'm all for old minatures, especially 2nd 40k, which remains my favourite edition! I like the rules

OMG yes! Epic Space Marine was what got me into Warhammer all those years ago. All I wish for is a new release of this game but all I ever get told from any staff in stores is its unlikely to happen and Titanicus is closest we will get (very sad panda) I'd also settle for a new release of Space Crusade!

Can't believe it's been 3 years already. Many congratulations on such a great brand and community. Really enjoyed this vid and makes me miss painting Epic and Warmaster. There was something satisfying about painting units so quickly. Excellent tips about turning up the contrast to 11 for such a small scale.
I love that your old brushes look better than my newer brushes. Good video 😀
Pleasure watching you work on something so small
Congrats on 3 years ... Doesn't seem that long and I've never missed a video yet :D -- We used to play Epic with Rogue Trader rules on a giant table and have battles that would literally last weeks .. good times :D
Oh wow I played Imperial Guard Epic and loved it! I loved the thundering artillery and lots of Leman Russ tanks and a few super heavies rolling forward! Awe yeah bringing back memories! I had square bases though.
They were before the strips if I remember correctly?
Its nice to see this version of the box, But my fav release was the "space marines" Epic box (the ultramarine box art version) which came had Orks (boyz, battlewagons), Eldar (guardians,Falcon grav tanks and a phantom titan), Spacemarines (marines, mk1 rhino's, Mk1 landraiders and a warlord titan) and the cardboard buildings.
The Epic 40k starter set is one of the bext that GW have released, I absolutely loved it.
Definitely picked the right chapter, Duncan. Thanks again for your help with the LVO paint judging!
I like seeing Duncan so excited about things =)
Wow, these really take me back! I remember these very fondly from when i was a kid. I Collect old White Dwarfs and the flyers in them for these are very cool. Congrats on 3 years of growth and success and heres to many more. Ill see if i can find some cool White Dwarfs in my collection to share w you. Cheers, Brother.
OMG yes! Epic Space Marine was what got me into Warhammer all those years ago. All I wish for is a new release of this game but all I ever get told from any staff in stores is its unlikely to happen and Titanicus is closest we will get (very sad panda) I'd also settle for a new release of Space Crusade!
In-frikkin-sane, back in the day I was happy just to have some damn paint on these tiny guys ..
Awww yeah. I remember painting those tiny lads. Loved Adeptus Titanicus even more!
