🤔So you're saying the 5th chaos god is called Al.
Duncan mate, you can't keep dropping these amazing Dark Angels tutorials, the planet will surely break.
😎
The planet broke before the guard.
@@Venom90damn right!!
Like Cadia? 😢
90 minutes with the Bob Ross of miniatures. Good way to start a day.
99% agreed, but Bob Ross wasn't that great, just popular. This requires exponentially more skill. Amazing job!
Awesome. Thanks for giving us Dark Angels fans so much to enjoy.
Our pleasure!
It's a pleasure to see a master of his craft. This video can be the best defense of the traditional technics for painting miniatures on the Internet.
Yay! Space Tywin Lannister! You can never have too many Dark Angels tutorials :)
I think he looks like The Grail Knight from "Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade."
"You are... strangely dressed, for a knight..."
It’s been almost 30 years since I painted a miniature (the days of Goblin Green bases) but I’m thinking of buying a basic paint set and a cool looking model this weekend.
Watching UA-cam tutorials can be quite intimidating but seeing you paint great models without an air brush in sight really helps.
I've been putting off getting the Lion until a Duncan tutorial drops. I've got no excuse to get him now!
You can tell that this is the best painting tips by how Duncan treat the every nook and cranny part of cape
Finally! This is the video i've been waiting for. Thank you Duncan!
It's our pleasure.
I was waiting for it aswell :D
This has got to be one one of the best paint tutorials on youtube. Great work here.
1 word: majestic. Definetly my favorite 40k modell so far, and with an excellent Paint job. Thanks alot Duncan.
Glad you like it!
I can't believe the official GW video for the lion is about a fifth of the length of this one... thanks for giving this model the attention and respect their own makers didn't give it.
Thank you Duncan! I needed these tips for when i finally paint the Lion
Love this model. My son wanted this asap as he thinks the unhelmeted version looks like his grandpa.
😂
This is the Mona Lisa of miniatures. Just truly fantastic
Thanks for the video! Awesome guide on wet blending as well. Love seeing these more advanced techniques broken down simply and shown so well.
I've held onto this model for 6 months. No way i was touching it without this guidance. Thank you so much 🙌🏻
Thank you for the video, Duncan and Rog. I am now going to buy the Lion tomorrow (as just about to finish Azrael, using your brilliant video for him). So pleased you have shared this with the world.
Our pleasure!
Once again Duncan, your timing is incredible. I finally, after about 10 months of trying, managed to get my hands on a Lion miniature and I'm looking to get started on building and painting him. I've been putting it off to be honest, partly due to being busy but also because I confess I'm a bit intimidated by him! I collect Dark Angels so I obviously want him to be the centerpiece of my collection; I guess I just needed to see something like this to help me plan my approach to the task. Now if only I could decide what head option... Anyway, this was great, thank you for the video, I learned a lot here o7
Thanks for the video! Amazing amount of detail!
Incredible, and just what I needed. Fantastic tutorial!
Glad it helped!
Brilliant so glad I found this as thought everything was behind a pay wall. Duncan video of painting Romans got me into painting 4yrs ago and I'm still going strong historical, AoS, Warhammer, D&D anything game. Yr a genius Duncan
Really good paint guide! Thanks for making.
I've been waiting for this one for a long time, well worth it.
I just picked up the Lion model as well, so this was perfect timing!
was a great tutorial as well! explains so much and really does make painting the model a lot less daunting!
Awesome, thank you!
What a great tutorial man! You have a knack for being able to explain what seems like difficult techniques to a newbie like myself!
That green cape is phenomenal
Thanks. Its fun and quite easy to do
Dunkan, now we need a guide from you for Abaddon the despoiler. Thank you for excellent content!
I feel like this is an absolute master class! Been feeling really intimidated on how to approach some of the bigger characters so this dropped perfectly. Thank you so much for this.
Its our pleasure :-)
Just finished assembling my Lion model on Tuesday, so very excited this video came out today. Thank you for the knowledge bombs, but I have to admit that my painting confidence takes a significant hit with each video that demonstrates your mastery. :)
Remember, I have been painting for many, many years. It's not talent, just practice and a lot of it. You can do it. Just have fun with it 😀
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA the encouragement is much appreciated!
Painting Lion El'Jonson has help has help me with painting gradients on the cloak and capes I struggle with building them up on Space Marines Commanders, Liberians and Chaos Lords.
My apologies I haven't watched this video last week, had stuff to deal with.
Thank you for the video Duncan. 🙂
Great Video!! Thanks Duncan!
Glad you liked it!
I don't play space marines, and even if i did wouldn't play dark angels and yet this video just wrapped me in. Amazing stuff!
I literally just picked up Lion 12 hours ago. Got home and bam, Duncan knew.
Aww man, there was me on the verge of giving up with the hobby, but you’ve seriously inspired me to continue
Might still wait a while to paint my Lion, but I have lots of other DA stuff I can work on first
Thank you Duncan!
I've been waiting for this video specifically since I bought your paints! Thanks for all you do! Looking forward to a Deathwing video with two thin coats line to go with Dad here!
Glad you like them!
Thank you , DRPA .
🐺Loupis Canis .
Thank you 🐺🐺🐺
I chose this model to be my chapter master and went all out on it. Thx for the video, stunning paintjob.
You're very welcome!
Phenomenal work Duncan! One thing I've started doing for my centrepiece models, if I've got details to paint after wet-blending the next door area, is to thinly varnish the wet-blended area. That way, the paint's sealed in, and it's easier to wash off any paint if you make a mistake and manage to catch the wet blend area.
Great tip!
That cloak turned amazing after a few strokes.
Something that needs to be said is that nobody is perfect and neither should your mini. If you are happy with the result but it doesn't look exactly like duncans that is ok. You being happy with it is the most important aspect. Do not judge yourself by the master but by what you think looks cool
Duncan,I would like to ask how to prevent the contrast paint from accumulating on a detail, which will make the color distribution very uneven. However, if it is applied directly to the surface of the model without dilution, the color will be too dark, and there will be obvious reflections. And I only added a little bit of water to make it so fluid that it would easily overflow onto other color blocks. This is a problem I encountered recently while making a batch of lychguard (in a strange way)
So keen to watch this ❤
Just time stamping so I can get back to this easily
18:46 Armour

Giant epic scale models are my favorite videos, please do more even tho I know it’s a lot of work lol
Amazing tutorial, thank you so much
You're very welcome!
Awesome Lion, Duncan! I did mine with a greenish tinge to the gold to go with the 'son of the forest' theme, using you're Elrond tutorial for that High Elven armour. Was my first use of TTC's glistening gold, which has become my default go to gold for a great many projects.
Thats awesome. We're glad you like the gold and the paints.
Honestly, that quick wet blending made me wanna try it too... So far I didn't muster up the courage to do it, but somehow the way you made it look like any other brushstroke really fired me up!
Go for it, it's not as hard as you think. We advise using a wet palette if you have one though, it'll make the technique so much easier.
I should have waited for this tutorial before painting mine heh. Fantastic tutorial and love the names of your paints. Glistening gums is top tier and made me chuckle.
Glad it was helpful! Yes, Rog and I had a blast naming the paints 😂
Banger!
wooo lets try it!!
What a coincidence, I got this guy today.
The intro was the most intimidating part of this video
Witchcraft! Seriously amazing man, blown me away how skilled you are. Could you look into doing Dante please, im trying to do him grimdark and its the bane of my life.
Impressive as always. Still waiting on Sanguinius tutorial!
Just as I have bought the Lion for myself this vid drops, perfect timing sir. Those colors you are mixing with nocturne green and Ivory tusk looks like variations of teals from dark to light minty. Wonder if I could use some of the new teals from the Army Painter Fanatic series.
FIRST!! As the Lion will it!
He sure did!
Great video and tutorial, the model looks amazing. I may now have to sell a kidney to buy all the paints...
Hey Duncan, love your videos! Wondering, what do you do with all these tutorial models when you are done painting them?
They go into our cabinets in our studio
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA aw man that's awesome, must be one heck of a display case 😅 wish I could see it. Thanks!
brother, you can't keep making these amazing dark angel tutorials. the planet will blow up like caliban
Great video, I'm building up to painting this dude, and his loyalist brother, so I needed this video! Not sure about wet blending though, I guess I'll need to practice first, I've not had the best results previously.
And I know I'm being pedantic, but I can't let ethe-real go..... 😅
LET'S GOOOOOOO 👁👄👁 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Let's!!!!!
Holy fuck, the paints needed for this are my whole salary
Hey Duncan mate, I was gonna paint the Lion too soon but I only have citadel colors and I really don‘t wanna add another whole arsenal of colors just for one miniature, which citadels can be used instead? And that video is great, good job man
Next time i would love to see you paint Lion El'Richie
All night long....
Awesome job as always, please do Vulkan soon
This is amazing, you makes me want to repaint all my blueberries green
Dark angels RULE!!!!!!!
I just finished him yesterday!
What’s the best way to paint underneath the model in the harder to reach areas? Such as under the cloak or the back part of his belt
This is my Bob Ross
That cloak belongs in a museum
If I had my druthers, I'd do up the base as a sylvan glen... remember, where The Lion Of Caliban goes, the forests of his homeworld follow. His Deep Strike ability is even called "Forestwalk."
I'm about to start his book, I'm new to mini painting after the release of Space Marine 2! Am I insane for wanting to attempt the Lion? He's awesome!
Maybe lol...but check these videos out to help get you started

@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Thanks, I've already painted 3 Ultramarines and have some other minis already coming in the mail. I'll work my way up eventually
I regretted not leaving the backpack off like I did with the rest of it, as you did.
I love Dragon Fang. Use it for my cadians uniforms. Abbyss blue is a second favourite
Great colours and we're glad you like them
I'd love to see the lions gun!
Shame there isn't a gun hand/sheathed sword option
Also I was not expecting Duncan to pronounce Ethereal “ether- el” and not “E-theer-e-all”
Duncan can you pls do a video about the Keeper of secrets or Teclis?
*smiles in hidden circle of secrets*
every time Duncan uses a Citadel paint, GW copyrights another Warhammer youtuber
King Duncan! Noob question, should I varnish plastic miniatures? I dont play tabletop, I just paint for fun and display.
Its a personal choice, if you're not playing and they stay in a cabinet, then there is no need. If you do decide to varnish, then just do a test first. I also advise using a paint on version as varnish spray is way to temperamental
i disagree with the sub-assembly choice since his cape could well have been left off and not left any noticeable seams because they get covered up by the shoulder pads, infact its how i painted mine, it also allows better access to the underside of the cloak and his back
Awesome, another cool sub-assembly choice. I couldn't quite get it to where I was happy with it.
So the armour is super green!
Sword starts at 1:19:55
Making me sad that my pile of shame won't allow starting Dark Angels yet. Looking amazing.
How do you do these sub assemblies with the wires?
Games Workshop literally looked at Revolver Ocelot and said, "Him...he shall be the face of Lion El'Jonson...." lol.
hey duncan what super glue do you suggest to use
what a coincidence :D just in time. Lord Duncan i want to ask you one question which is not related to this video which prime color spray i shall use for mortarion body death guard green or chaos black ?
Death Guard Green is a good shout
Thank you very much :)@@DuncanRhodesDRPA
am i really going to watch 1 1/2 of the "legend" paint the lion....sure i will!
I thinks it’s only a matter of time before somebody kitbashes Grandpa Lion into an actual knight on a horse (or maybe a giant lion).
Go for it!
I love this; thank you! You have motivated me to get cracking and take the big man and his minions out of the box and off the plastic sprue.
I am curious how long this took to paint.
any chance you would wanna do the inner circle companions too?
Did those last week over at the Academy 👍
MY BAD @@DuncanRhodesDRPA
WARNING: This is a bit longer than I wanted it to be…. Which tells me the chances of my question getting answered is almost none! Unfortunately… but I split it up into 2 parts… where the first part after this is the question and the rest is just rambling about what I’ve tried and why the question even exists!
18:39- So I have a question how you did the green of the cloth (but also, I wanted to save my spot….. because I need to stop painting and run some errands and come back later to follow along for the rest of the video)!?! Now would you have ended with the same results if you painted the same area with either the darkest green or even black and then just wet blend all the way up to the lightest/brightest green?!? Instead of what you did which was paint a mid level green then work your way down to the darkest. And then go back to the original green and work your way back up again (which just sounds like way more steps)!?!
So no matter what way I’ve done it, my end results have never looked as good as yours! Even when I follow along step by step 100%!?! But that has a lot to do with the fact that you are a great painter and have been doing this for God only knows how much longer then I have (which I would “maybe” finally be able to say I’m out of the “noob” category and am now in the “amateur” category) and the fact that I’m not using the same brand of paint…… the Necron video of yours that I also did the step by step process with I had to watch the whole video, write down every paint name and convert it to the paints I have which was definitely annoying (and even that one doesn’t look 100% the same, even though it was definitely my best paint job ever)! But I just curious if maybe I’m not understanding the point and that’s why I can’t really take it to the next level….. or if it is just “the paints I’m using”?!?
Duncs mate, so im like 4 days into this wet blending shite your doing on the cloak. Faur do,s for explaining it. But ive got a niggling question.
Why are we wet blending when we can use the washes for the recesses? I tried both methods and the wash method was far quicker and looked far better. Or is that necause im just so bad at wet blending? 😂
I’m struggling so much with the wet blending. Am I just bad or is this genuinely a somewhat difficult thing to get right
Man, I already painted Lion a week ago. Oh well
Tolkien made friends with an elf and a dwarf but Dunkan mixed their skin))
