- A God decides it’s time to bring Humanity back into the Stars, and creates giant superhuman soldiers in a basement on Terra that would be known as Space Marines.
The 20 Legions of these supersoldiers will struggle with their identities, their purpose, their faith, and - ultimately - each other. Each of these legions is unique in ways you wouldn’t believe so welcome to our breakdown of the 20 Legions of the Adeptus Astartes from Warhammer 40,000.

How about the Tau empire mechs and auxiliaries
The night lords were warriors who used terror methods to win overwhelming odds and to comply worlds without entering their space solely on the intel that the night lords were coming. They degraded over time like most legions. The world eaters didn’t try to earn their primarch love they chose to share his pain. They didn’t car for love or the notion of being loved. They knew their father had no aura hence half a primarch and yet they chose to share his pain and be closer to him . Their dna was made to care for others regardless. The alpha legion was the biggest legion in size possibly thousands or hundreds of space marines under terra and and in stasis on other worlds or in other space marine legions chapters . You need to stop being biased or what you think they are like. Like all legions they have a broad scope of honor terror horror and warriors ….get your facts right
Always good to see more long form lore videos, good stuff man, and to answer your question, an interesting topic might be discussing the dark age of technology/golden age or more broadly the general history of humanity within 40k.
@@Arkimedus to be honest I think that's been done to death by mostly focusing on humanity/imperium not that I won't watch those videos but the war in heaven/ fall of the eldar need more love too
@@bolojohnson711 yeah some aspects of it has been heavily focused on, though men of iron stuff less-so imo, war in heaven stuff is also super interesting, though it has also been covered a fair bit and is less accessible to new viewers and doesn't have as much explicit source material to focus on. Personally I do prefer more obscure 40k theory, but at the same time I would be hesitant to jump into making longer videos on the more esoteric and less accessible aspects of 40k, though getting to those topics when the bases are covered is a good idea. While the war in heaven isnt too obscure, you might for example, want to focus on an introduction to the necron orks and eldar first imo.
40k lore is one of the best out there but its also a mess to read through it. So getting a free explanation is very useful
I heard someone once say "everything is Cannon and nothing is true". I think it fits 40K very well. 😅
Toiling through the books, Codex, online sources and old notes is the fun for me. I wear my extensive knowledge of the 40k universe like a badge of honor because if it ❤

“Horus was the first primarch to be discovered”
Alpharius: are you sure about that?
Well if Alpharius was never lost he could never be discovered lol
Alpharius isnt even sure about that, afterall, his entire book was "a lie".
Alpharius was first primarch then became the prototype for primarch/s, Horus is the first to be found
Sounds like something Omegon would say.

- Dragon Warriors
- Raven Guard

I really like the name of the Raven Guard and the fact that it is an OG name is cool too. Corvus Corax is one of the coolest to me, minus the early 2000 edge. He saw the Emperor's true form for a split second when they met, not the form in golden armor.
21:00 “Infantry wins battles, logistics wins wars.”
Only a single legion understands why the war is fought. Why the soldier dies. Not to destroy what's in front of them. But to protect the innocents behind them.

Like I said I don't know what you're talking about, I might be mis understanding it all. I understood that men of emperor using a rubric to gain power which sounds like chaos rubric or evil rubric that's what I'm understanding.

The Alpha Legion is by far my favorite but I am liking the Night Lords more and more over time and this video definitely has shown them in an interesting light.
I, am Alpharion.
Ah, the Night Lords and Alpha Legion. The biggest honeypots of the 18 legions
I'll highly recommend the Nightlords Trilogy written by Aaron Dembski-Bowden
I, am Omegan...... I mean..... cypher..... Oops I mean Alpharius.
I'm more and more a Fan of the alpha legion. I hope they do more with them! Much intrigue, multiple plans, multiple ways a situation could benefit one or more goals, whichever they are and whichever side they benefit, it's like every bit of lore and plot with them is a Spark and you never know a 100% if it's gonna be a campfire that warms you or burn your house down... ..or 1000 other possibilities. So much room and directions to speculate! I like that. Probably also the reason I'm obsessed with Cypher 🤷🏼♂️😁
ive been playing space wolves since i was 15 years old. I am 44 now. And able to tell you i am very happy to have seen this video since some of this lore went past me somehow. Amazing video, thanks brother.
The Space Wolves didn't miss the Siege of Terra due to the battle of Prospero, they made it back to Terra well before the siege but set out to kill Horus, Russ didn't deliver the killing blow so Horus won and the Space Wolves were hounded by the traitors until they were trapped. They survived due to the intervention of Corax.
Exactly, to make it even more precise, Leman refused Dorn's request to defend Terra because he felt it wasn't his Wyrd, so he went to Fenris to consult the underworld to find out how he could harm Horus.
From the start, he was well aware that he couldn't defeat Horus, but he saw that if he wounded him with the Emperor's spear, it would lead to Horus' defeat, which is what happened.
Leman literally threw himself into the fray to guarantee Horus' defeat.
In fact, before attacking Horus, he consulted his Legion and asked them if they would prefer to stay on Fenris, if they would prefer to go and defend Terra or if they would prefer to follow him, knowing that the attack on the Sons of Horus could lead to the downfall of the 6th Legion, and they all followed him.
For the thousand sons, kind of an important detail that you glazed over: Magnus didn’t just get the flesh change under control all by himself. He sacrificed his eye to Tzeench to postpone the change.
He didn’t know it at the time, it was just a warp entity to him.
This was just one of many times Tzneetch manipulated Magnus, poor boy is a prime example of arrogance. Still loved his daddy though, unlike most of the other traitor primarchs.
@@ActualDrunkAtheist he renounced his father after becoming a Daemonic Primarch. The only loyalty he has now is for the knowledge beyond the warp
@@MrLegendseeka I did say he loved his daddy, not currently loves. Look at the others, do you think Angron loved Big E ever? What about Peteurbo, or Mortarian, Curze? Hell I still say not even Fulgrim loved his father, he was entirely too much of a narcissist. Horus loved daddy E and the twins I have no idea truthfully. Magnus did love his father, and had the Wolf not burned Prospero and took his head, I still say the thousand sons had a good chance at staying loyal. Horus and Magnus I think are the only ones who loved daddy. Someone's gonna try and whiteknight Lorgar but I think it was more absolute adoration and a desire to serve a higher purpose. It took ADB and a terrible plot point to turn Lorgar against his daddy, in love there is a willingness to see the flaws and Lorgar was just too busy wanting to present himself for headpats, truthfully always seemed a bit the way they present Future Trunks in the abridged. "Please love me dad"
Anyways a long winded way of saying I do believe Horus and Magnus are the only two who truly loved daddy. Feel free to chip in if you think I missed something.
21:45 ronounciation of "Macragge" is hilarisous🤣 Besides that great video
According to the newest lore, Alpharius was the first among the Primarchs to be discovered. He even created the Blood Games - the ruthless training of the Custodians. His twin brother Omegon was discovered the last. Alpharius saved his brother in a daring SOF-type rescue operation against mind-controlling aliens, and then it was pretended by the twins that Alpharius was "discovered" by Horus.
According to Alpharius, yes. But he is THE unreliable narrator for missinformation is his game ;)

Correction for the first legion, all had bought into the Lion after they had duelled him because he believed that action spoke louder than words. Plus he inherited the Charisma of the Emperor even more so than a normal primarch would. They were one unifying force during the great Crusade up until Luther hesitated to tell the Lion about the atomic bomb snuck on his flagship. The Lion saw Luther as a father Figure now brother and had felt betrayed, so sent him to Caliban as a governor of some sorts to later deal with him. After the Heresy he had tricked the Astartes of Caliban , some not aligned with Chaos, some mixed fired the first shot at the Lion.
He did not inherit the charisma of the Emperor, in fact he is quite famous for having absolutely no empathy or social skills unlike many of his primarch brothers. This being the reason why the 1st legion is respected but also very mistrusted among the Astartes. That flaw also played a huge role in him not being chosen to be Warmaster and the animosity with the space wolves.
By charisma I believe he means the Aura the the emperor has. The one that make you look apon then in awe and service. The emperor and the Lion are the only one that walk in a room and you feel the desire to kneel down before them. Even Horus felt this. Hi is the closest to his father. And yes they both have that autistic personality that comes of as rude and uncaring. But the lion is actually one of the best a reading people especially in combat. Malcador the Sigillite said so himself
@@Not-Ken-MolestinaThe Emperor never had an aura or feeling of uncaring, he was known as one the most humble and empathetic beings in human history. The first few thousand years of him attempting to unify humanity were from positions of secrecy or advisory. Also, the Primarchs didn't inherit anything, they were designed to be everything they became and reflected key points of strategy the Emperor believed were necessary to advance the Imperium. The downfall of the Primarchs was the "secret ingredient" added into their creation
Fantastic. Nice and easy to understand. I'm somewhat new to 40k, but I love it. Better than anything else out there. Please break down the HH into digestible chunks. While I've read a fair number of books in the last year, this massive story arc is very messy and daunting to go through. A video about the Inquisition would also be welcome, I LOVE them.
Salamanders are the only ones who haven't forgotten where they came from. Many chapters treat baseline humans like cattle.
Amazing video, hope to see more of you!
“And like any Tyrant, the Emperor…” - Reported.
Im very new to the lore, but i think the salamanders are dope and underrated compared to ultramarines and sons of horus

This was very informative, thank you for this video.
Sad, it seems like Sanguinius may have accidentally cursed his own legion in his oath and through his psychic bond "we will rise together or we will fall together". He fell, and as a result of their deep link to him theyre upholding the oath and reliving his fall shot for shot. The black rage isnt some sporadic curse its very likely the result of a primarch not knowing his own power
True it was basically a double-edged sword
this is such good content please do more videos because they are fun to eat to while watching
Watching while I eat my breakfast
Keep in mind that although long-time fans may understand what you mean when talking about how the Ultramarines's numbers swelled, newcomers are likely to be utterly confused. This video seems to be mostly aimed at those who are new to the lore, so perhaps some background could be given.
Thank you. I was hoping it'd get touched later on
I am mostly new. Can you explain?
@@knightshade2654 I believe it was a reference to II and XI Legions; the legions and their culture were destroyed, but the Space Marines themselves possibly weren't eradicated. This, coupled with the Ultramarine's nature of recruitment, led some to believe the remnants of these two legions were integrated into the XIII. Hence their massive numbers.
@@scar4361 That was purely World Bearer rumor. Even the author himself it is nothing more than a rumor. The 13th is large because they have 500 stat systems to draw recruits from and have very stable geneseed

I'm currently reading lots of books about the Routs, and frankly, I'm liking this Legion more and more.
It's ultra-paradoxical, on the one hand they have this thirst for battle and the rage of the Beast in them, are very bon-vivant, and alongside that, show great wisdom (especially in the use of Warp powers), a good reading of battles, are very loyal to the Imperium, without bending to all the rules, and above all, they have enormous respect for combatants and discuss as equals even with humans who have shown their courage/determination.
Wow, one of the best 40k videos on youtube. Fast and to the point information. Keep up the amazing stuff.
Awesome! I was hooked the whole time!
The background music is great!
Very good summary of the Legions.
Did he just called the Lord Emperor a "GOD" ????? Blasphemy!
Black Templars: Not blasphemy, but gospel!
Big E IS a god, lol, at least to most of us that aren’t Xenos or Heretics.
That is a Blasphemy indeed
He is a living dead guy.
The loyalist have culture I'm starting to see. They concentrated on things besides being perfect, or extreme war methods, there some of the most human super humans I have ever had the pleasure of reading about
I love the Space Wolves, they are probably one of only two factions in the whole setting who seem like they are actually having fun
I fucking love 40k lore. I don’t play the game but the journey of exploring this entity is an amazing experience. I love the dark and gritty lore

Each of the legions has a counterpart between the Loyalist and Traitor forces. Some are easy to see while others are more debatable.
Dark Angels=Luna Wolves
White Scars=Alpha Legion
Space Wolves=Thousand Sons
Imperial Fists=Iron Warriors
Blood Angels=World Eaters
Iron Hands=Emperor's Children
Ultramarines=Word Bearers
Salamanders=Death Guard
Raven Guard=Night Lords
It’s definitely more White Scars=Death Guard, Salamanders=Night Lords, and Raven Guard=Alpha Legion
@@alphamav3rickgaming430 Youre talking about rivalries. The Death Guard tried to hunt down the White Scars during the Horus Heresy but couldnt because their practically opposite combat doctrines. Same for Night Lords being serial killers that captured Vulkan and Salamanders that save civilians.
Raven Guard and Night Lords both have primarchs with similar appearances that use lightning claws, both legions have a defect that turns their skin white as paint and eyes black. They both focus on surgical strikes. The Pre-Corvus Corax Raven Guard even were terror troops just like the Night Lords.
Death Guard and Salamanders both focus on direct assaults, with Death Guard specializing in Destroyer squads and chemical weapons, while Salamanders banned Destroyer squads but heavily favor flame weaponry. Both Legions have 7 Companies and their primarchs are incredibly resilient. Mortarion is weak to Melta and Plasma weapons but resilient against poisoned and fleshbane weapons. Vulkan is weak to poisoned and fleshbane weapons, but resilient against melta and plasma.
A big difference between the Loyalists and Traitors is the reason why they ultimately rebelled. The Traitors didnt care about non-astartes or the Imperium as a whole.
Look at the Salamanders who send in squads of incredibly valuable space marines to save civilians and then look at the Death Guard using virus bombs. Raven Guard are special forces while Night Lords skin people.
I would say Emperor's Children mirror the White Scars more than the Iron Hands. Espescially if you consider that they have similar ways of warfare generally and Jaghatai and Fulgrim were actually swapped.
@@jw7500 The Iron Hands and Emperor's Children have opposing situations like several others.
Both go to extremes, the Iron Hands turning themselves into cyborgs more and more, while the Emperor's Children mutate and get surgeries for bizarre drug glands.
The Iron Hands cut off their emotions while the Emperor's Children embrace them to the extreme.
Even their Primarchs were practically opposites, with Ferrus Manus as an ugly and slow but strong warhammer wielding brute, while Fulgrim was a beautiful and swift swordmaster.
As far as I know the Emperor's Children didnt have a distinct form of warfare, and nowhere near the White Scar's hit and run specialty.
@@ChaosTicket Afaik the EC very much favoured fast, but melee based warfare. Not nescessarily from the saddle of a (jet)bike as the Vth did. But very much a fast assault force. Both Primarchs are very similar in combat style as well, fast and precise swordsmen. The big difference tho, between the two legions and Primarchs is that one is absolutely inundated with narciscism and the other is very much not.
funfact: in the Heresy game ruleset, there is a EC army configuration that basically gives you the White Scars ruleset.

You got the Dark Angels somewhat wrong - It was mostly calibanites that turned fallen, not the OG Dark Angels from Terra. Basically they were calibanite traditionalists that saw the imperium as a faceless entity destroying their culture.
Now do the Eldar. Please! They don’t get enough love and deserve a nice video like this. :)

Have not played a single game but this lore is incredible im hooked now and I don’t know where to start!
Idk if you will ever see this, but I have always told people who don't know where to start, to just load up the games workshop website and just browse the various factions mini and see which one kind of stands out to you; and then head over to UA-cam and look up a lore video for that faction (I always suggest Weshammer, because he does great lore videos and has quite a good amount of deep dives on factions lore, plus the deep dives tend to be only about an hour to at most 2 I think, so they are not overly long and give you a lot of info.) And then from there just kinda browse whoever's channel you found and you will probably find a lot of more video about random Warhammer things (another reason why I recommend Weshammer because he also has a lot of shorter form stuff and you can just kinda watch on the fly, or shorts if you want even smaller info tidbits). Essentially just kinda grab whatever gets your attention and watch it, develop your knowledge and tastes from there and see how it goes and see how you like it. I hope this helps in any way ^^
Same here 🤣
Here here
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the Alpha legion have one of the largest forces, not smallest during Horus heresy. It was only the fact that they didn’t fully commit, splitting into sub factions of loyalist, traitor, full blown chaos worshippers, non loyalist anti traitor and everything in between?
Yeah, due to the Alpha Legions way of operating, they very rarely got into open combat against equal foes and as such suffered the least casualties of the Legions during the Great Crusade.
The thing is, we don't know what Alpha Legion strength was... I don't think THEY ever know, just like they don't even know who's side they are actually on, because its been 10'000 years, they never went to the Eye of Terror, so unlike other Traitor Legions, they have no veterans of the Heresy still with them and with how compartmentalised the Legion is, anybody who had any idea of what side they are on or what they are even really doing, is LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG dead.
Alpha legion is now the biggest
Warhammer lore rivals FromSoft lore dude. This shit is so good.
good vid, bud. keep it up.
Something notable about the White Scars: They were considering going to Horus' side within the Heresy, however what stopped them was Jaghatai's understanding and reason. He saw the corruption that had undergone Horus and his other brothers, and had they been simply dissatisfied with the Emperor and the actions that he took, which would have been immensely reasonable for all of the Traitors aside from Fulgrim (Angron and Mortarion got kidnapped, Horus felt betrayed by the lack of knowledge or involvement in the Webway, Perturabo was stuck fighting the impossible wars, Magnus had been told that he was not allowed to utilize his gift, Konrad was literally driven insane by prophetic visions, Lorgar had his homeworld destroyed, and Alpharius Omegon had a point to prove about subterfuge, but he's the weakest one the group for reason.)
Jaghatai would have betrayed the Emperor in a heartbeat, he was not a good or honorable man, he was a bastard who just happened to be the maker of Jaghatai and his loyalties did not lie with Big E.
Am only just getting into 40k, am loving it

I remember there were the Crimson Fists back in the days
Some of us are still playing them! (They’re a break off chapter from the Imperial Fists though now - but still supported in lore and had their own unique rules in the last few editions. Will probably get them for this one when Imperial Fists get their rules supplement. They’re the ‘brave last stand/fighting to the last man/out in a blaze of glory’ chapter lore wise.)
The Alpha Legion sounds a lot like the Green Berets to me. Go in with a small number of troops, destabilize the government, start a coup, wait for the main battle army to arrive and take over.
Glad i wasn’t the only one who thought about that! They truly are textbook examples of what Green Berets are.

27:20 - I thought Alpharius and Omegon* were the first Primarchs "re-united" with the Emperor and were kept trained by Malcador; though IDK where I know this from!
* and, in my head canon at least, guarded by Custodes in the cells beneath the Imperial Palace, their triplet brother Epsilonius!
The End and the Death Pt.2 confirms Alpharius is dead.
Leman Russ did NOT rename them to the Space Wolves thats what the imperium calls them but they (including russ) say they are The Vlka Fenryka they were known as The Rout before Leman. Space Wolves are their official Imperium name but not to them
For the 3rd, It would be good to mention their sacrifice for the Emperor and how they got the right to bear the Emperor's personal standard or how Fulgrim conquered a planet with 7 men to give a perspective about their pride and perfection etc. My guys are hella under-appreciated for pre-heresy and got the shortest one here as well :)
Salamanders my favourite
I'm learning things about warhammer and have a question: What are Primarchs exactly and why do they need to be found?
Even before Angron, "warcrime" was part of the Warhound's ROE.
i liked the video but do you have anything on my favourite legion deathwatch?
Deathwatch are not a Legion, they're a specialized Chapter.
@@doublep1980 arent they all "specialized chapters" they are all there for a specific reason, ie space wolves hunt down traitors and the raven guard being emo or whatever they do haha
@@Bear_AU Not really, the Space Wolves, Ravenguard, White Scars etc. may are specializing im some type of tactics/warfare but they go out and fight every type of enemy.
The Deathwatch and Grey Knights though, are specialized Chapters who do one thing only.
Deathwatch only fights Xenos and is made up from Space Marines who are recruited from various Chapters and serve there for a specific time, before returning to their original Chapter.
Grey Knights only fight Chaos Daemons and are all Psykers.
The Minotaurs are another specialized Chapter, who only fight renegade Space Marines and nothing else.
Minus Samus' Bounty Hunters and Chuck Norris' Space Rangers.
