The Little Mermaid Movie Review - It Gave Me Crabs

  • This is the only The Little Mermaid (2023) movie review you need to see. From a grown man, going alone to watch Ariel and friends frolick around under the sea for a couple of hours, wondering where his life went wrong. This newest "live-action" Disney remake is pretty much on par with The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and the rest. Halle Bailey is really strong but the fugly visuals and hodge-podge of music slow things down a lot. Also Scuttle is absolute trash. These movies are pointless but young kids and parents don't seem to mind.

Over the years, I've really begun to examine the fundamental differences between animation and live-action movies. The only thing I'll say in regards to Disney's live-action remakes (aside from the animated originals not needing remakes in the first place) is that sometimes, a story can only be told well in one medium. And the majority of Disney's animated classics fall into that classification

I disagree with that live action can't work, but Disney has done a very poor job at doing it. Mulan could've work as a live action but they decided to change it in the worst way possible, Mulan was strong mentally and won her battles through strategy and now in the live action she's strong because of magic.
Mulan, pocahontas, Tarzan, Disney already did a live action jungle book back in the 90s and it was good.

@@nelsonrivera5287 It's true enough that bad writing is bad writing, regardless of the medium. But this raises another question - why are these getting remade at all? They are literally referred to as classics! In my opinion, I would be way more impressed if they took a movie that originally performed poorly and remade it. Which is honestly is how movie remakes SHOULD work

Money is the game, The Little Mermaid is popular and despite the criticisms many are talking about this movie. When one side hates something, the other side will go support it. We seen this with Joker. Many on the right felt the left were hating on straight white men, so they flocked to support the movie. It's all a win for Hollywood. Drama sells. Captain Marvel also made a billion. They even gave Brie Larson a ton of publicity. They will keep making Batman, Superman and Spider man forever because it sells. These companies don't care about culture wars, just money and publicity.

And just looking at ESG score style politics one can see that money won't be made (from audiences) by filming these kind of political pieces, but they film them anyway.
In the case of this mermaid film, they will lose something like 100- 150 million dollars on the film.
That's AFTER countless failures. This is ideology, not money driven... that said, there is a money motivation. A 250 million dollar production budget before advertising for a film that looks like a cut scene from a video game screams money laundering.
Somebody made a lot of money off of this, but it didn't come from ticket sales, it was channeled through the budget and will likely be eritten off of taxes after the movie finishes bombing

You know, where, had they not had a specific number of minorities represented in TV, and film, would LOSE access to capital. They will NOT be considered for Oscars, if they fail to abide. Back in the day, it was done organically, not shoved down your throat, like it is today. So, comparing yesterday, to today, has no real merit. How does turning Scuttle female, advance the story? Adam, I have a friend that works for a major VFX company and he has worked on titles like Multiverse of Madness, Tron 2.0 and Dune. I had a conversation with him about the murky and muddy CGI we see lately and he said they do this so they can render less frames by limiting cycle-expensive lighting and shaders. It takes days to render 5 mins of colorful, fully lighted and motion-acted scenes. If the production house has hit a wall with render-times and cant afford more machines or cant outsource rendering to a cloud service they can “muddy up” the scenes and cut the render-time in half. Its done to make the films quickly and cheaper.

You should probably lead with the fact that most of the things you don’t like about this movie exist in the original (story line) and also don’t assume your kids (or other kids) aren’t into it.
I’ll also add that, for there’s a seemingly contradictory ability to “win” in this category… You either make the same movie that stays “true” to the story or you detract and/or add nuance and/or details but then get accused that you don’t respect the original source material. Can’t make anyone happy.

I have listened to it on UA-cam and it would probably be a decent comical song if it was any other female singer or comedian singing it. I don't even mind its some kind of "rap", it has a bit of a Caribbean touch that doesn't make it that jarring. Definitely more a Manuel Miranda kind of song than an Alan Menken song but it could be passable . It's mostly Awkwafina's voice what makes it terribly irritating . Also it's pretty funny how the original Scuttle was portrayed as a bad singer as a gag in the original movie and Sebastian and other characters avoided him to sing during the Kiss The Girl sequence but here Awkwafina does sing, she sounds terrible and apparently nobody tried to stop her.

I watched it last night. Yeah, it was fine. I didn't hate it. One of my big issues with it was they weren't consistent with the changes. For instance, in the original, after Ariel "falls in lust" with Eric, she goes back home and her sisters notice that she is obviously head over heals with someone. She is humming to herself while looking in the mirror putting flowers in her hair and being aloof in that moment she is pining. This causes Tritan to wonder who this boy is. In this one, she is upset and irritated about something, so when Tritan gets the idea in his head she is in love, it just doesn't work. Lots of weird little changes that don't make sense. And yes, all the new songs suck. The worst part of the movie for me was Sebastian. Aside from the awful CGI, the new voice actor just doesn't work for me at all (he was my favorite character in the original). Theater was empty, by the way. Just me. All the way until the movie was just about to start and some chick in her 30s came in and sat somewhere behind me. Weird for an opening day.

It’s embarrassing to watch something like the original trilogy of Star Wars and not able to find something today that beats that. Even the next Spider-Man Miles Morales movie has Miles wearing a BLM pin (which is hilarious since the BLM riots in NYC were devastating plus they support defunding the police and Miles dad is cop! LOL) and then showing us last year that Spiderwoman was white, but now she’s black. Whatever! Now, you want to see a good animated film, probably the better than this next Spider-Man movie? See “Puss In Boots: Last Wish”. WOW! Now this movie was so well written and had with no racism or political messages with phenomenal animation to boot. It has a strong message with fear and life that I didn’t see coming and it just blew me away. Hollywood been doing this stuff for decades, race swapping is hardly new, it was done to appease the majority in many films. For example Angelina Jollee character in Wanted is black in the books, but Angelina is box office. Jake Gyllenhal was the prince of Persia. The kid in the Last Airbender was white, etc. etc, Also many police officers support BLM as well. There are black officers that shared their experiences with racism on the job. My job gave associates the option to wear a BLM pin, it wasn't mandatory, it's free speech. Many companies stood with their black employees after George Floyd was murdered in front of the world. Do I support the organization BLM? NO But I support the sentiment that black lives matter, like most black people. If that wasn't caught on camera, that officer probably would have walked. Movies had social and political messages since forever. Every TGIF show had messages. Heck Star Wars has politics and messages also. the Jedi are like Catholic Priest, so it touches on religion also.

When I heard "Scuttlebutt" I immediately thought of that scene in Walking Dead with "Easy Street" and replaced it with "Scuttlebutt" Daryl would have been a "Negan" in no time flat and for all you people wanting to say Disney doesn't care about you NOT seeing it. Firstly, shows how much you know about box office math/profits, and secondly Disney is losing China on this one and that's been their only way into the billion dollar club and trust me they want to be back in it again. So they might want to start being less divisive and more a crowd pleaser like they've always been.

Families have to PAY to take their little kids to see this movie. The movie is 2 hours and 15 minutes, which makes it harder for children to stay interestes. Little Mermaid Remake is struggling in the box office and may not break even. That being said, these are giant, summer tentpole movies. Did you expect move channels NOT to review this movie? It's a huge $250M Disney movie with probably $100M marketing.

It’s kinda funny because I’m actually fascinated with these for pretty much 2 reasons…first because they correct the heritage of the original tales when it was otherwise whitewashed or just carelessly lumping an entire region together because being ethnically accurate was completely and harmlessly irrelevant in the eras these classics were made in…and 2…because it does that while still maintaining the original Disney visions and storytelling in the process…in an era where you can research absolutely everything…I think that making things more accurate makes these stories that much more believable and therefore causing the audience to be more submerged into the experience

I was obsessed with the little mermaid as a kid. I would watch it religiously every weekend growing up. The live-action version of it is good and enjoyable to watch. Halle embodies Ariel so perfectly, Vanessa is such a perfect cast choice and Eric is such a heartthrob. Sebastian despite his weird design which later on grew on me, was one of the highlights of the movie. So many funny liners. I wish Triton and Ursula were more menacing tho. Poor unfortunate souls visually was so good. Part of your world was magical. Kiss the Girl where Ariel uses Aries in the star constellations to tell Eric her name was so cute and clever. You actually fall in love with their relationship which is not very common for these live-action princess films where the relationships seem pretty surface-level. The final battle where Ursula turns big was amazing and took me back to the times I was scared watching it in the animation 🤣. The movie is engaging enough that you don't really feel that it is long unless you need a toilet break 😅. I feel it is better than Beauty and the Beast (I found that one pretty boring). I'd as it is on the same level as Cinderella. If the CGI was on the same level as Avatar with better pacing, this would easily be the best live-action princess movie to date.

Also Disney is truely insulting the viewer’s intelligence by having all these different races everywhere that are sooooooo blatantly obvious that it’s anoiying. There shoving the race card down your throat. I don’t care that Ariel was black, I just wish she had Ariel’s signature red hair & blue eyes
I think they stuck to the movie as much as they could, the movie was VERY dark. The underwater scenes it was so hard for me to see anything. If Disney dropped 250 million on this movie plus 100 million in advertising they need to call James Cameron for some help

I've watched an animated film that has 2 hour run time, and it was a fun experience. The visuals were amazing, the story was perfect and magical, and that animated film remained one of my most favorite animated films of all time. The film was for teens and adults but I knew from watching it that the story told in that animation was something that children would enjoy.
But children don't want this...If they had made something interesting, then yeah, I can imagine people around the age of 13 and up enjoy that for 2 hours, this is not "something interesting" because they destroyed the magic and love that was in the 1989 animation.
One of the advantages of animation is stylization, which allow the creators create memorable characters that can emote in some way to make the story interesting, but we have to keep in mind that not all stylization can translate to real life proportions and real life animals and human beings because those are set in a world where magic exists while magic don't exist in real life. With certain stylizations, they can only be appealing in animation and not real life, and even with stylization of human characters that look good, it's hard to find someone in real life with real life proportions of the same face that look just as good.
They already stylized the fish which doesn't look cute in real life, doing live action with that and make them look real while also talking will give people nightmares.

Valiant Renegade has an Excellent and repeating rendition about how much Little Mermaid and other movies need to make to break even. For example, much will depend on the Domestic side: $500 million in the Domestic Box Office, is worth a LOT more than $500 million coming from the International Box Office - China only nets the studio 20%-25% of profit....The US returns AT LEAST TWICE that in net profit. So literally $50 million in Box Office in the US, is worth MORE than $100 Million coming from China, if you're the production company. And THEN throw in the multiplicative gains (or losses) regarding merchandise, marketing opportunities, downstream business effects on Parks, Hotels, partnerships, etc.
Bottom line, my call is that the studio needs $900 million to break even (that is a CONSERVATIVE estimate).
This is considering what MUST be grossed in the Domestic Market...a minimum of $500 Million Domestically. IF they DON'T get at least $500 Million from the Domestic Box Office, then they would need to get an extremely high number from the International BO...which I find highly unlikely.
And again, even so: IF the Little Mermaid movie "breaks even", or even just "makes a little money" even at $1 Billion, that is STILL a possible loss for Disney given how much leverage they've bet on other aspects of their business on this movie. When they were marketing this thing, it was NOT just for the movie. If they don't move the other business "opportunities" and "inventory" surrounding this movie, those investments become an albatross around their necks and their distributors (not to mention Disney is ONE of those distributors)..
So realistically, this is about how much Disney has leveraged themselves on the Little Mermaid: Given what we've all seen regarding marketing, we can guess "A LOT".
Realistic numbers for The Little Mermaid to be a profitable business IN THE REAL WORLD?
The movie must make WELL OVER $1 Billion...somewhere approaching Super Mario Bros territory.
