Total star but the no-effects thing is a myth. He used a Rangemaster as early as Taste. I had the honour to interview him in 1981 and look at his stage rig. Boss EQ booster, Boss OD1 , MXR Dynacomp and Boss flanger in the line.

My next door neighbour and her daughter came round the other night, wailing about how amazing Queen are/were. And how there was no guitarist could come near brian may.
Really, I said, because the teenage brian may got to meet rory gallagher after a concert once and asked him how on earth he managed to get such a great sound. Gallagher sat him down and gave him a masterclass in style & technique on which, he says in his autobigography, he based his entire career.

I was up front, at his feet, at a gig @ the Stardust Ballroom, in Hollywood, Ca. I got to touch the Strat during “Shadow Play”, & bought him a Jameson’s & water afterwards. (It came back with coca-cola). The very first thing he said, and he spoke first, as there I had been, right in front of him was: “ How did it sound? Was it okay?” I replied: “Okay? You blew the roof off the dump.” He thanked me, then ordered the next round, keeping the coke back, as well.Keep in mind, this is around 1983, “Jinx” was the new album, Gary Myrick opened. He spent about a half hour with me as the place emptied, finally sitting at the bar, until Tom O’Driscoll came for him. An incredible ending to an incredible show! Just the most humble, normal guy I’ve met. No “Rock Star bullshit, just a guy who happened to play guitar. Only other one who came close was Alvin Lee, but only if he knew you weren’t a fan-boy. On the night I met Alvin, I was in the opening band, so the ice was broken. Rory was leery of reporters also, as a couple came up during my time with him. “Later”, was his reply to both reporters. One last observation : He was also the only artist who got better with each new album... He never sat on his laurels, or phoned it in. He improved & impressed me every single time out. A true legend....

Damn, SO fucking good. Rory was a force of nature. Why he’s not more well known or as highly regarded as the other “usual suspect” big name rock and roll guitarists defies explanation. He was once even considered as a replacement for Mick Taylor in the Stones back in ‘74, but I can see why he wasn’t picked. He was just too wild and high energy for what the Stones were doing. He would have totally stolen Jagger’s thunder onstage and eclipsed all that funky chicken stuff. All I know is that he should have been a household name. I’ve only really learned in depth about him in the last 10 years or so.

@@melonballer8475 At the same time, it’s a goddamn shame that he never got the mass recognition that he deserved. He truly was one of the top 3 greatest guitarists of all time… worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Hendrix or Beck. I’m not sure why the mainstream never embraced him. Maybe it was just because he was too real, too no frills/no bullshit, too down to earth, and played just for the sheer joy of it, rather than showboating and playing with his ego. I’ve turned on a lot of young’ns to Rory, and they all agree he’s one of the greats.

I think what made him unique was that he had the whole package. He was not only extremely talented and gifted, but he was also a high energy wild man who played with a much higher level of passion than so many other “virtuoso” guitarists. You can really tell that he genuinely loved rock and roll. For him it was never about ego or showing off. He lived for the stage, and all that natural talent just came exploding out of him without an ounce of pretension. Musicians like that are extremely rare.

no there won't! they just don't make them like this anymore, absolutely astonishing that he never became what they might call today "a rock god" however I think that was a good thing because it preserved his integrity, all the really famous players know who he is and among his peers he is very highly respected and as for those who haven't heard him because they're only into contemporary mainstream ha-ha there missing out and probably wouldn't get it given that genuine heartfelt talent is nigh on extinct in today's manufactured music industry. I don't even look in the contemporary charts, as far as I can see they aren't real musicians. so guys and girls we are the lucky ones.

    Best guitarist ever.
    Awesome singer.
    Incredibly underrated songwriter.
I love his simplicity: jeans, a shirt and that's about it...oh yeah, socks and shoes too.
I've never read anything bad about him. I don't think he was a perfect human being (that doesn't exist), but I bet he was close to that.
A gentleman as in gentle man.
And his band is awsome: his bassist is one of the best I've ever seen/heard.

Really! What can you say? He has got to be one of the top 5 of all time. Hendrix, Clapton, Blackmore, Page, EVH, are all guitar Gods but watching these clips of Rory really pisses me of that he isn't even mentioned today. Man I wish I could have seen him live. RIP

I am also 61. I have been listening to Rory for 40 years. When I was a student people told me I would grow out of his music but thankfully I have grown out of them and not the G-man! But, unlike you, every time I hear this it makes me smile because nobody has EVER played with his passion! Never to be forgotten...the Irish genius!

what a performance, I think this was actually a set opener, it really does have everything, the energy is abundant and the solos especially the first I honestly believe they're the best i've heard by anyone ever, Rory was finger tapping back then so EVH didn't invent it, his use of pinched harmonics is amazing 10 out of 10!

Holy cow, Rory was truly THE BEST live performer of the 70s.... Live he was so entertaining to watch, and played many new/different versions of songs as opposed to trying to replicate the album' versions, often his Live performances were much MUCH more amazing than the studio cuts, (that's why '74 Irish Tour was one of his biggest albums!!)

Rory Gallagher and his boys going crazy and talking to themselves. What killer rocking tune and will sound just as good and fresh if played in 200 years time, I was at this gig, the memories are still completely fresh in my mind as it happened yesterday. The woodworks sneaked out of the timber on the floor and left the stage, they just could not take the volume and vibrations. Forget about time, Rory makes this totally timeless
