Bad Penny {Lyrics}.
Well, like a bad penny you've turned up again
You're in my sights, there's a mist on my lens
I think you know how it was when I tripped and fell
Well, you've double-dealed me, baby and I broke like a shell, oh
Well, like a bad penny you've sure lost the glow
But I'm out of reach, your smile's sure gone cold
Well, it can't ever be like it was then
Well, don't you fool with me, baby
Well, don't you mess with my plans
Some stormy nights
Your memory haunts me
You won't go away
Well, like a bad penny you have turned up in the change
Try to fit into the picture, you can't get inside the frame
I think you know I'm still sore but I'm on the mend
Times sure have changed, it won't happen again
Well, like a bad penny spins around and around
Well, you won't know what's gone wrong when it all falls down
You got to learn from now on to stop playing games
You ought to keep on moving, you got to spin on your way
Some lonely nights
I hear you calling
Won't you go away?
Well, like a bad penny you have turned up again
You're in my sights, well, there's a mist on my lens
I think you know how it was when I tripped and fell
Well, you've double-dealed me, baby, I cracked like a shell, yeah
My dear departed wife's favorite song. RIP Georgianne
she had a great taste :) hope you still listen to Rory
Rory Gallagher's music was contagious, electrifying, and mesmerizing everyone who heard it, I feel a deep sadness that he's not here with us!, R.I.P.
Wow!! I'm 59 years old just run across the post on Facebook about Rory never heard of him but I can tell you one thing, I understand why Jimi Hendrix said what he said!! This man and his band are absolutely amazing, I can't get enough of this!!
What did Jimi say?
on a cold wet night 1979with nothing to do me and my buddies all aged 16 went to see Rory. He blew us away and rocked. Totally amazing live
Rory was a spectacular guitarist, but can we also make an honorable mention of that bassist??? :) 3:22
All hail the mighty Gerry McAvoy!!!🙌🙌🙌
@@DWFanChanKor Gerry ( Power Stance ) Mc , The chemistry between and stage presence of these two legends is something very rare indeed , as Rory says times sure changed it won’t happen again .
Indeed. Gerry laid it down.
One of my all time greatest guitarists...
I was in their concert in Athens 1983 . I was 21 years . They played with this schema . One of my beloved group after so many years ❤
Not many can play THIS good, THIS drunk, all while wearing a bolo tie. Fuckin legend.
Never fails to move me , modest genius ,don,t think he knew how great he was ,just played from the heart ,and cerried us all along on his wonderful musical journey
60s, 70s and some 80s. After that pretty much sucks! No talent, auto tune and fake. Won't even go into disco and rap.
How much I love this song!!
To me this was Rory's prime - this and Shadow Play and a few others - his leads were searing, brilliant, bluesy and of course , laced with Celtic.
Question for Jimi Hendrix “What does it feel like being the world’s greatest electric guitarist? Answer”: I don’t know ask Rory Gallagher”
I agree 1000 percent.
pleeeease... debunked story! Jimi never said that.
Gerry McAvoy at 3.25 clearly loves his job.
Simply put, I love it. One of the best to ever do it. Long live Rory ☘️🇮🇪☘️
Travelled round the country when I was sixteen seeing the guitarist things a bit different now in 66 but still the best rock on
The best always leave us early RIP Rory
its coincidence
I mean he was an alcoholic of epic proportions..
base player is feeling it
The brilliant Gerry McAvoy. Still going with the wonderful tribute Band Of Friends.
@@rockdinosaur666 Gerry gives it everything. Total legend
Insuperabile grandissimo RORY......
Saw Rory at the Armadillo World Hq in Austin, it was a smoking good night! Great blues rocker
Legendary. RIP RORY GALLAGHER
Be 75 now and still doing it. What have we missed?
Am 78 and found Rory again , found Alvin Lee great guitarist like ror
Note perfect, a master.
Rory Gallagher 🇮🇪 ☘️
Woow so powerful 💪😎🤩🎶🎸❤️
Was up in Ballyshannon this weekend. A great tribute to Rory. Quality guitar-smiths on show
Rory was a Cork man
The legend goes like this: Hendrix was asked backstage during the Woodstock Festival in August 1969 by a journalist how it felt to be called the best guitarist on the planet. The answer was: No idea, you should go and ask Rory Gallagher.
This has been debunked many times
Yes, okay, may be or not. And what do you want to express now with your comment?
@@MHen I’m just stating it was debunked, Rory is great and to me he is the greatest but Hendrix was never documented as saying that, in fact he was often asked who his favourite was and he would say Billy Gibbons
Quote: "Hendrix was never documented as saying that, in fact he was often asked who his favourite was and he would say Billy Gibbons."
ZZ-Top was founded in Summer 1969 in Houston/Texas, Hendrix died September 1970, so, how can this be true???
@@MHen billy gibbons played in a band before zz top and they opened for Hendrix
I guess u could say I'm an "older kid"now but I saw Rory in the USA in 1972. We went to an all day outdoor rock festival at Rockingham Motor Speedway in N. Carolina. Rory closed the show out that night after many acts ahead of him on a long, hot Southern day. Let me tell u he absolutely blew up the stage & gave a killer performance! I will never forget it! My friends & I couldn't believe what we were hearing. We had heard of him but had no idea what that Irish boy was about to deliver! A great show, and an even greater musician!
..that's a great story ....I can't imagine what you saw ... unfortunately I was only 7 years old .
@@marksc1929 Thanks Mark. You're right...I saw lots of things I'll never forget! Just a wonderful experience that I will always cherish. So glad Rory Gallagher was there. What a performer he was! Yes, 7 is a little young to be hitting the concert circuits lol. But I'm sure u made up for it in the years ahead☺. Best wishes to u!

Nice comments
Probably the greatest?
OMG....lucky you !!!!!!!it was impossible for me because I was 8 and a million miles away.........
Saw Rory open for Dave Mason in Boston around 1978 or so. I went there to see Rory. Mason made a big mistake having Rory open. Rory just lit the place up. The crowd kept trying to get Rory back out. I saw him after that at the Paradise (Boston). I got tickets for both shows. Brian May came to the second show and sat at the table next to us,. Queen was playing in town that night. May is a big Rory fan. Rory was just an incredible live act. The feel he had for the guitar was just incredible. He was a force of nature.
I don't think there was a bigger Rory fan than Brian. He still speaks so reverantly of him. I was on my way to see him in Chicago in 83, I believe, but the train from Waukegan got held up and I missed him. Never got another chance and I'm still disappointed to this day.
The most under rated guitarist in rock history, and that aint no lie. Prove me wrong
Jimi Hendrix was asked what's it like to be the best guitarist ever?
He replied you'd best ask Rory Gallagher
I don't think anybody could accuse Rory Gallagher of trying to be anybody else's "soundalike"
The man was a true original.
Needless to say, Rory was one of the greatest guitarists at the time, but let's take a moment and appreciate that bass solo starting at 3:23, pure class!
No such thing!he had his own style and sound.
Great for sure!but best no such thing.
IDK why it took 24 years of my life to discover this man. But I'm just happy I found possibly one of the greatest musical artists that lived.
Well done for catching up mate, life is better now for sure! x
RORY GALLAGHER BEST GUITARIST IN THE WORLD. YEA
The man was a genius. A true pioneer in Irish rock history!

The best
Mr G, you are absolutely correct! Just recently discovered this guy (thanks to UA-cam) and didn't realize what I have been missing all these years. I am now a HUGE fan! This guy was absolutely fantastic! Can't get enough. I'm 76 years old and thought I had heard 'em all - shows you just how wrong I can be. Appears you can teach an old dog new tricks!👍
@@jimw.4161 this is so cool!! Enjoy every minute my friend 😊 I live in the town where he was born and we have a festival every year of all his tribute acts and bigger names playing...the best weekend of the year without fail 🤟😁
@@nickysheerin1869 Nicky, how lucky can you get? I sure would love to attend that Gallagher Festival! I'm 76 years old and somehow missed Rory all these years. But better late than never! I'm sure enjoying him now. I listen to Shadow Play (his live performance on UA-cam) at least once every day. His fans have told me that his Live performances are the best - and I believe it. His connection to his live audience was incredible. Have only heard wonderful things about the man and his music. He seems to have never left his working-class values and for him, it was ALL about the music. Incredibly talented who have his audience everything he had. So glad I found this man and his music.
Stay safe, my friend.
Best wishes from USA.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Stayed true to his music, didn't care about having a hit on the charts,he played for his audience, down to earth and humble, and at the same time,a great musician, who gave it his all on stage.
And lived and died in a bedsit. RIP Rory Gallagher . Genius 😢
The bass guitarist deserves highest credit
.. he's badass.
Check out Band of Friends
More liked geeked out of his ass but he does do well.
And he plays with a pick.
Gerry McAvoy🎸
Gerry McAvoy really completed the band
A terrific bassist
Those guys loved and lived for the live set seen him twice in the eighties Glasgow pavilion for £6.50 when bands that weren't a patch on this guy were charging small fortune by comparison 🙄
forget Liam and Noel Gallagher listen to Rory Gallagher million times better. Rory doesn't do a bad song🤟
10000 correct man 👍
Our national treasure Rory 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪.......there will be only one !!
Amen! Absolutely the Greatest!
You lucky man
Rory and Gary Moore, and Phil Lynott, that is not bad from one country and time
I heard Rory Live on 8 track tape on 1971. He just kept getting better and better over the years. A rare talent to be treasured.
When there is a discussion about the best player/performers of the day, I always end it with this guy. It only works with people who have some understanding of the instrument. I have an edited video I keep that hightlights his mastery of live tone and performance. There's usually no argument after that. It's especially satisfying when they are hearing Rory for the first time. I'm amazed, to this day, how many people don't know who he is.
From Denmark and Big Rory fan❤️
@@kimnormann7863 I'm married to a Dane.
Right here 🙌 I've been playing guitar for 45yrs an just stumbled onto him an completely blown away 🤯 jus spectacular execution at all fronts, wish I knew of him much sooner..And they dare say Taylor freaking Swift is thee 8th greatest Guitarist in the World 🥴🤢🤮...RIP LEGEND 🙏
I need a bigger like button for Rory Gallagher. 👍👍👍

l always dig Gerry McAvoy's bass solos for this tune!
Have to agree. Also miss Rory.
Gerry McAvoy is a beast on the bass.
Played bass better than a lot of leads can play guitar.
Es como un huracan en su maximo esplendor
Solid as a machine!
Yes he is. Imo one of the best.
I couldn't hear this comment
came for Rory, but gawd dayum that bass solo was amazing AF
McAvoy is goofy crazy good on the bass in this piece
Blows me away every time, God what TALENT.... one of the greatest guitar players ever !!
His iconic Strat is set to go to auction Oct 2024. Sheena Crowley’s father sold the guitar to Rory 60 years ago. Sheena has a go- fund- me- page to keep the guitar in Ireland instead of some billionaires wall.
I believe the guitar should go to a museum in either cork or ballyshannon
Can you give us a link. Cheers from Switzerland 🤘🏼
Holy shit. That dude was playing the bass like his life depended on it! Wow! Fantastic!!
Gerry McAvoy. After Rory died he joined Nine Below Zero, now with Band of Friends with the drummer here, Brendan O'Neill, who I played with once!

Irelands best along with Gary Moore .
Damn I always thought Gary Moore was British
@@letsgofishing5238 Nope lol ...He's as Irish as it gets ...Played with Thin Lizzy for a little while .
Gibson ranked him 42. They would have ranked him in the top 5 if he played a Les Paul or SG lol
Typical Gibson behaviour. They can start ranking players once they figure out how to keep the G string in tune and stop selling the same guitar at bourgeois prices
The bass player needs more recognition, awesome stage presence and talent
Gerry McAvoy great Guy also look Leo Lyons at 3:00 ua-cam.com/video/q6NskLyMpRc/v-deo.html
Totally agree with you sam👍
Totaly agree
You read my mind
Damn straight!
Gerry Mc Avoy on bass right? 😎💪🏼👍
Yes, a truly great bass player. Loved watching him and Gallagher.
Yep.
So obviously Rorys playing incredible. But goddamn that bass player is fucking killing it! And that’s coming from a guitar player.
I had the privilege of seeing Rory Gallagher 3 times in my life. Him and his band were a powerhouse. They'd play for almost 3 hours. He'd leave drenched in sweat. He did it for the music and the fans. You get the feeling he didn't give a flying f:#k about anything else. Legend.
Exceptional man & performer! It's amazing to think that the work, his love for & belief in the music that he shared with the world was truly his bottom line.
Never a poser, or victim of siren songs..
Fuck the Rock and. Roll of Hall of fame, u ain't getting Rory❤
THE GREATEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that bass player is so amazing wow
Maxwellington He’s a ‘giddy kipper’ and no mistake, eh? 🤣🤣
great bass player and showman
Bassist getting his absolute rocks off

Συμφωνω..και σε ψηφιζω υπουργο...
I can't stop watching this performance! Absolutely iconic....
I think we all come to see if Rory is better than Hendrix, but the bassist is killing it!!
Yea to Hendrix and Rory 😅
Always... when I´m sad, a watch this video...the bass solo... I smile, and start a new day... Thanks Garry McAvoy...Your face when you made that...True way of living.
If you're not feeling it when Rory plays that beat up strat you ain't for this world.
I have to watch this performance of Bad Penny at regular intervals, otherwise I start getting withdrawal symptoms. The way Rory played here and how he added all those subtle little nuances just with the volume and tone pots is just magical. ❤And can we talk about what a MONSTER bass player Gerry McAvoy is? 🤩
Rory's flair on the Strat is just
Gorgeous
Gary Moore was just as professional
Both came from Ireland
God bless them both
I am 57 years young, been a rock n roll fan nearly all my life. How the hell did I miss this guy? Fantastic!
JJ, check out Tatoo'd Lady (live version) the greatest guitar solo I've ever heard. Moonchild (live) Shadow play (live) and I Fall Apart. Fairly new to Rory myself but it's a great adventure
@@TheLeiferikson thanks for the recommendations brother. I will definitely check him out on these live songs!
ooouh....i feel less alone thank you jj ! Exactly the same for me. Knew the name but never listen.
I am 57 too! Lucky enough to see Rory at Hammersmith Odeon in the mid 80s. One of the greatest, no question.
Just thank the Lord you found this!
Addicted to this video, Rory was such a brilliant player but the whole trio is spectacular. A truly great performance
The "Live in Montreux" vid is even better!
@@bart-d3208 Montreaux doesn't have any of the material off of "Top Priority" though like this or "Philby"
Gerry Mcavoy was Rory`s perfect Bass player. Also played with Alvin Lee. One of the best players of the time. A rock legend.
He’s a AMAZING Bass player 💯💯
Absolutely! tight like clockwork. Even in slower songs no dragging (= bass/drums slightly after the beat). Is quite hard to do. Lot of professional bass players can not do that. To my opinion Rory could shine on stage because of the rock solid rhythm section.
Did you know Gerry made a solo record? Worth listening.
He’s AMAZING.
There's another live version of this song, where Gerry has a Bass solo
Rory was such a great live performer , bass Gerry Mcavoy and the drummer is Brendan O'Neil
Particularly good drummer.
All 3 just awesome
The real deal right there. No fakery or Auto tune . Guitar amp and pure talent . I once asked Albert Lee the guitarist about Rory when they recorded with Jerry lee lewis . Alberts face lite up and his face said it all. Rory was the real deal and was in total control of the guitar . God bless him
That bass is killer 3:25
Great to see so many new people watching Rory and his band.He would have been really happy.
I'm from Brazil and I am really into guitar players. If I hadn't searched for greatest players, I probably wouldn't have heard of him. The world is unfair because I have been enjoying Rock and Roll music for many years and I have never heard about Rory. My uncle who is the one that introduced me to Rock 'n roll music, which is an old dude, has never heard of him either, and my uncle really loves this type of music. I'm 32 and I think Rory is one of the best guitarrists I've ever seen so far. My fav guitarrists are Mark Knopfler and Richie Blackmore, but now Rory is in my Book. May your soul rest in peace Rory!
We miss you RORY ! R.I.P. Irish man you live for ever in our hearts ! slange from Greece .❤🍻
Obviously rory killed this song, but that bass player was slaying it the whole way thru right along with him.
That's Gerry Macavoy. He does a tribute to Rory called Band Of Brothers. They still tour the UK frequently.
Only my opinion but Rory was the best I ever heard, well done also Gerry McAvoy your baselines were flawless
I was just thinking the same, Gerry is a tiger on that bass and with the drummer provide Rory with the vehicle
If there was one artist I wish to God I could've seen live, It would be Rory. Holy Shit, he just flaming kicks ass. Bad Penny, Moonchild, Shadow Play, Calling Card, Shin Kicker, Edged In Blue, Crest of a Wave, just a bottomless wellspring of killer tracks across multiple LPs, and of course, the immortal, mystical, melodic epic ballad, Daughter of the Everglades! Damn, words cant describe how much I adore that particular track. Daughter of the Everglades is one of those songs that just epitomises why I love the 1970s and 70s songwriting in general. Thankfully, there's no shortage of live footage of Rory on UA-cam for those of us who missed him in his heyday. LOVE U RORY!!!!!!
I missed qyite a bit, because I was a few years too young, and yet I totally got it. This is a most excellent track, can you give me plenty of ideas fir more listening. Peaceout.
Gerry on that fucking bass
Bass player is so good.
Yes McAvoy is the best!

Rory was soooo good no frills rock and he and his band gave it everything! And Christ he could play 😄👍
He was so damn good. Damn I wish I could have seen him. A true guitar god, and so underrated it hurts!

..same ..
He was the favourite guitar player of Jimi Hendrix.
I saw him twice
Once in 1975.once in 1982
You are true in what you say
It’s not just about being “the best guitarist ever” but for me it’s the best performer...say Rory back in the very early Taste days and there has never been any one better... in my humble opinion... Alvin Lee came close though 🎸🪕

What?? Everyone knows he’s one of the best of all time 😂
@@peter9111 You'd genuinely be surprised, he is criminally underrated, no where near on the same level of notoriety as Hendrix, Clapton, Page, etc.
@@peter9111 yeah he is underrated for certain. You won't ever see him in 'greatest ever lists' certainly not in the top 10 anyway along side the likes of Hendrix, clapton or SRV.
Wow I had no idea! It annoys me when people can’t recognise pure talent
Huge fan of Eric, Jeff, Jimi and many of the 60’s and 70’s rock guitar gods but the first time I heard Rory I knew I had found the Unicorn. He is the total package.
that bass player is life
Saw him in a UK theatre a year or two before he died. The place holds 2000 people and I reckon there were about 300 people there. I stood right at the front, literally leaning on the stage with both arms resting on it, staring in awe. He was about six feet away from me. Despite the poor turnout (some people don't wouldn't know a brilliant opportunity to see a fantastic musician if it moved next door and shot their dog), he played his f**king socks off! RIP Rory!
To Novak In good. You have "broken my record" for seeing an artist up so close! I went to Wembley Arena to see Bryan Adams, and for some reason, at the FRONT of the audience, there's an extension to the stage, to the right. He played to the "select few" of us. Wow! I think because you were so near to Rory, people could actually come up to you, and touch you, and they would be HEALED!
he was such a great player best of the best
I camt stop lisyenjng to this band, I'm only 38 but wish I was born in this era ❤
You missed out. Rory was to found strolling the streets of Cork...
Rory was the complete self-sufficient rocker, had every guitar skill at his disposal. Also an awesome slide and acoustic player.
Rory is fabulous. Listen first time on television 1976. I was 12 years old and I put my cassette player close televisor and record the consert he gives in Germany. Still have that tape. ..

so am I !!!! recording on TV !! I was 14 ! and I saw him on stage 3 years later ! he was born for that ! I loved this guy . R I P . Rory
At the end of the day there have been and will be many great guitarists…BUT…When it comes to Blues/Rock power trios then Rory’s band is amongst the very best.In my opinion he is totally at one with his beloved Stratocaster and especially his tone sets him apart from many other great guitarists.
