I really enjoyed the interview. Watching Rory handle the would-be shrink was interesting and shows what a gentleman he was. This was in the era of Aerosmith, Queen, Elton John, all the glitz - when everyone was trying to be an untouchable rock star, and yet Rory only wanted to be himself. Wow. What a legend.Only discovered his music in the last few months. For that time, it is almost exclisively what I listen to. The scope of his catalogue, and the quality of each facet of it, are just magical.
I find that when artists as well as everyday folk are asked to describe emotions, especially the blues with words are immediately humbled. The humble experience attracts humble people or is humbling if you are not already there on arrival. I like the way the subject is addressed here in the interview and in the comments. I've been moved by how Keith Jarrett and Billie Holiday talk about that expression. Billie Holiday talks about how the Blues is not about one particular emotion (sad) but others as well. Keith is just on another plane when he talks about it It is an experience that is identifiable, but not easily put into words no matter what fund words you have or ability to articulate. People tend to hit that wall where music has to take over where words simply cannot. This is so wonderfully demonstrated in this interview. Cheers-
My 83 yo father's been a poet and songwriter since he was 13. I never realized how difficult is for an average person without the gift to make one single composition until I tried. He made lyrics and music at the same time mostly in 1-2 hours but most of the time it was in less than half an hour. Now I'm 40 and started to write my feelings as therapy. Metric, rhyme and metaphors are coming fluent. It's sad feelings that gave me that kind of inspiration. It's weird. I always thought it's something you was born with. Buts it's probably something you need to discover inside.
It almost seemed as though the interviewer wrote out his questions 5 minutes before the interview. Yet he asked the kind of questions I think a lot of people would want to know about. As for Rory, he seemed humble, honest, and self reflective, like I would hope most musicians would.
Really like this. Looks like Rory has had a small refreshment - which helps when faced with this interviewer. Some interviews he could be more inhibited as - for me - the intensity of his commitment to the music must make it awkward to talk about it. The man played and sang. Others talked...
Bit of language barrier here . Hence Rorys getting a bit impatient. Buts it's great to hear Rory talk about his music what muscians inspired him & show us his guitars amps.etc .
Good grief, this is painful to watch. Rory was such a sensitive, emotional and genuine person. That interviewer is so aloof and showed no empathy whatsoever whilst grilling Rory about personal feelings etc. I wouldn't have been surprised if Rory would've walked out after a few minutes saying, 'sorry mate, I don't think this is going anywhere'. And would you believe he's asking if Rory is satisfied with his life...WTF??? Well, it just goes to show that Rory was extremely easygoing to put up with this nonsense.
Most hilarious comment. The interviewer is mainly talking about his instruments. The usual shit interviewer would ask the random bullshit question the general mainstream wants to hear. I play guitar and love him talking about guitars. I don’t know any guitars I who doesn’t like talking about their guitars. The interviews language is annoying and that’s it. You have zero ciriticak thinking ability.
Soooo very painful to watch. Good thing Rory was the kind sweet caring polite soft spoken big hearted gentleman that he was or he may have got up and left right after telling this terrible interviewer to go to hell !!!
I knew his name , as I saw posters of him in Liverpool in the early 1980’s..but didn’t know anything about him. I remember thinking who is Rory Gallagher? I never got to see him, now all these years later on UA-cam I’m blown away by his brilliance not only musically but as a thoughtful person with a gentle and beguiling manner. Quote from Polly Toynbee wisdom: Never be beguiled by false promises of simplicity, because peoples circumstances don’t come in one size”.
Saw Rory down-under in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre in the late 70s early 80s many times before Capital closed for a few decades to reopen later. Rory was a guitar master, full of energy. If you were up close to the stage he often let you strum his beaten fender guitar. The show always left you in awe to his music ability on multiple electric and acoustic instruments. But rock-blues was down pat Rory style. God bless you, memories to be cherished with the Boys. Still got and listen to all your albums. Energy and style at another level.
I love and respect Rory Gallagher such a kind patient man for this guy's silly questions who doesn't seem to have the slightest understanding of music.
looks like a German programme, Rory is the perfect gentleman the interviewer is picking up on what he says not what he is saying. and he is one hell of a guitarist loved by all my mates who range form mods to metal. he was the blues.
They did this interview after the Rockpalast 1976 show. I read an article that said the band had been in the TV studio all day, then gave that brilliant performance in the evening, then Rory, exhausted and hungry ( hadn't eaten since lunchtime) patiently answered all these questions. That smile at the end was probably relief at the prospect of finally being able to go get a meal and relax.

Nothing like an overly cerebral German trying to understand where "music comes from" by asking one of the best musicians ever to walk the planet some of the most awkward questions possible. Rory was graceful in his answers even if his frustration with having to go through this torture was ever so slightly hovering in the background. I cut my teeth on "Irish Tour- '72" and still play it 50 years later when I need to turbocharge my day. You were the best, man. Still are.
Rory had to be some kind of angel cause listening to this guy's questions in 2024 makes me go wtf are you even asking me? Its music, what planet are you from?
He should have conquered the world as the greatest guitar player ever and the best white blues player ever. To polite and to human to have been a superstar.
He was one sweet man. So sad that the "Irish Virus" eventually brought him down, and so many others. It's hard when the culture is working against you. Hopefully the youth who admire these legends will learn, but unfortunately life isn't that simple. There was just something about Rory Gallagher that I loved; he was a treasure.
Yeah, shit. I was lucky enough to interview Rory in Cork in 1983 for a UCC student magazine. I wasn't exactly an experienced journalist, but I also let the man finish a sentence, at least.
So I'm not the only one ... Rory is so gentle and nice and the interviewer not only does not let him finish a sentence but also does not finish playing the demo and it's even worse
I didn't find the interviewer's style to be psychoanalytic at all. The interviewer was a German and he was curious and wanting to help his German audience understand American music and American guitar playing style. I found the innocence of his questions endearing and I'm sure his German audience appreciated the information he was getting from Rory who generously gave it.
Rory is trying his best to explain that it's something that comes from the soul to a person who doesn't get it. The history, the influences and how he makes all of the guitar playing his own. He is telling stories through his music. It's a if I have to explain it to you, you probably won't understand. If you listen, His explanations are absolutely beautifully soulful. ❤

Rory used to play rock till he dropped then he would take a break and play some acoustic numbers then after his "rest" he would then take the roof off with his renewed energy and best licks !! I saw him at the Top Rank Suite here in Liverpool UK in 1971 Osibisa opened and He closed !! Osibisa were so good I was fearful Rory would have trouble - He didn't !!
@@zohramennane5866 I must've been high but he was, hands down, the best concert in my life. Thirteen on stage, no frills, and came on polished. That and I got to see my all-time idol so I got those things going for me.
He reminds me a little of Ronnie Lane - didn't care about anything besides the music.
And he was so full of fun !!
A role model of sorts, staying true to himself.
I think Rory the most underated guitar player but for me he was and will be still one of the very very best worldwide
I agree
Yep ,he had a big influence on what was to come ,
What a beautiful person Rory was ... so completely genuine, played with a great freedom most don't experience.
Gotta love this... Rory giving great answers to terrible, sometimes cringeworthy questions
Listening to the great Rory Gallagher is like being taken to school every time! His knowledge is incredibly vast and he is always and kindly willing to share. What a great guy💖
why did this guy had to leave so soon I m French , blues guitarist saw him many times, he was and he is an inspiration so humble and real
Never in my wildest dreams would I have known that Borrat interviewed Rory Gallagher.
😂
Germans, you know...😂
OMG, now that would have been hilarious!
I saw Rory once in the late eighties. Around the same time saw stevie Ray Vaughn. I give thanks that I had friends who took me to these gigs. Two of the greatest, without doubt.
I’m jealous. They both look like they gave their life’s blood to each performance. Did you have a preference to who you thought was a greater player after seeing/ hearing them live?
@@88pynogrl both were truly great players. I named my son Rory so maybe that gives you a clue. But my wife's brother and wife named their son Stevie Ray before this, so it was taken! I am also half Irish, so maybe biased
@@NigelMinchin talk about putting you on the spot!! Lol! But I thought your answer was diplomatic in it’s avoidance!! Hahaha- sort of like asking a parent- who’s your favorite child! Bravo to you sir!👏👏👏👏
@@NigelMinchin U have a friend Reggie Gibson that called his son Rory for same reason. A Spurs fan
@@MrYFlyer Reggie is clearly a man of taste!
I first got into Rory when I was still at school ( I'm 67) when I heard " Same Old Story" by Taste. Unfortunately I only saw him once when he played at Free Wheels , a bikers festival in Central France I think in 1991. Sadly missed RIP
Amazing guitarist !
Saw him a few times at Manchester Free Trades Hall .
Great guy.
Great musician.
Very humble .
I wish I had seen him live even once.
Gosh me too! My Dad saw him in Perth in 1978 and I wish I'd been old enough but was just a kid. I can't even imagine how amazing he would have been!
I wish I had too, my dad saw him in Glasgow in the 70's
This simple guy with a big soul who is for sure one of the best guitar players ever lived came from south Ireland from a small town called translated in portuguese "cortiça" wich Portugal is one of the biggest producers worldwide. Rory was one very special guy - I miss him very much!
Rory is Just a Legend
And for anyone asking 2:37 is I Can't be satisfied by Muddy Waters
First song I heard Rory play was Walk on hot coals...convert thereafter....fantastic musician and unique xx
It’s not too late to listen your music, rory! Just this month i know about your songs. I love it much! You are now in heaven but your music still alive ❤❤❤❤
Sooooooo patient with the interviewer. Shows just how much of a nice bloke Mr Gallagher was. Everyone says the same about him.
I can sensed Rory's patience. This interviewer don't even know what he's up to.
The interviewer is a moron. Interupting and talking over Rory. I'd have made him a guitar hat
Its a metal plate,is it a metal guitar, over your fing head
Thanks for uploading, love Rory, what a lad.
DANKE an den WDR. Von meiner Seite . Jeden Abend Rory live ! Was für ein Künstler er doch war. GENIAL !!! My Hero for ever !
Strange interview - but Rory is very patient and what a talent! RIP Rory Gallagher 💜✌️
Thank you for the sounds and life of Rory Gallagher....without people such as him, the world would be worse off. He was an amazing man and guitarist. He will be sorely missed, but his music will go on forever!
Yeah I thought they were all the questions I wanted to hear asked really
Such a kind and humble soul! Miss you Rory!
I still regret I never saw him play live at a concert.. One of the greatest guitar wizards
Yes, the interview was insensitive but Rory handles it like the gentleman he is.
Yeah question like this about life need whiskey and I don’t even drink whiskey 😅
Interviewer was a d'head, Rory looked really stoned , which prob helped -sort of 😂
I knew his name , as I saw posters of him in Liverpool in the early 1980’s..but didn’t know anything about him.
So damn good,he could make any guitar sound great!
He's very patient with these absolute beginner questions
I love and respect Rory Gallagher such a kind patient man for this guy's silly questions who doesn't seem to have the slightest understanding of music.
Legend guitarist, super guitarist,love ❤🙏🎶🎼🎵🎸✌️👌🍀
looks like a German programme, Rory is the perfect gentleman the interviewer is picking up on what he says not what he is saying. and he is one hell of a guitarist loved by all my mates who range form mods to metal. he was the blues.
Dear old Rory, what a lovey fellow. RIP old son.
Old? He never GOT old!

Increíble.
I have no other words.
Interviewer needs a slap.
True i was like shut up
Hahahah totally agree
This guy is struggling with the English language, I think.
Hahahahah
🤣True.
Thank you for sharing The word needs to here Rory pay guiter and sing.a king Rory is for ever he has passed on his journey withe the rest off the great ones.❤❤❤❤🍀🍀🍀🎼🎼🎼🎼☘️🇮🇪🇺🇲🇺🇲🇮🇪👋👋✨✨✌️🤟👑👑👑👑
I can see that this interview was a real struggle for Rory. He did very well considering.
Interviewer Seems like a guy without a clue, Rory showing great patience.
Still are.
Loved your opening sentence!
This interviewer must’ve won a competition, he’s clearly special
my heart still aches that rory isnt here with us,,
Such a cool dude and
immensely talented.
Rory had to be some kind of angel cause listening to this guy's questions in 2024 makes me go wtf are you even asking me? Its music, what planet are you from?
a very honest man and a wonderful musician
Why am I kinda in love with hiiimmmm😜😜
He should have conquered the world as the greatest guitar player ever and the best white blues player ever. To polite and to human to have been a superstar.
Probably the coolest man ever in the Hall of Fame of r'n'r... ❤
What a handsome guy he was!
I never new he had a moustache at some time.
I agree!
11:50 is my favourite part of that interview. Just answering with a "ping" on the strings. 😄👍 Rory 🥰
Poor Rory, he looks like a sweet tired puppy. He was such a wonderful man. Most people being that exhausted wouldn't have been so patient and kind.
Taste opened for Cream in 1968 when I saw them in Detroit, one of the best concerts of my youth.
I absolutely love Rory. Gone way too soon. Such a talent.
He was great
Very much so love rory xx
Rory is so gracious and patient with this idiot😒
What a talent he had, great Rory
He was one sweet man. So sad that the "Irish Virus" eventually brought him down, and so many others. It's hard when the culture is working against you. Hopefully the youth who admire these legends will learn, but unfortunately life isn't that simple. There was just something about Rory Gallagher that I loved; he was a treasure.
I think the “Interviewer” thought himself a psychoanalyst! I’m assuming he was sacked after this carry on. Our Greatest guitarist of all time 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
The interviewer is a moron. Interupting and talking over Rory. I'd have made him a guitar hat
I'm starting to think that 95% of interviewers are wankers.
ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITARISTS EVER RIP RORY RIP🥀🍺
Rory is trying his best to explain that it's something that comes from the soul to a person who doesn't get it. The history, the influences and how he makes all of the guitar playing his own. He is telling stories through his music.
It's a if I have to explain it to you, you probably won't understand.
If you listen, His explanations are absolutely beautifully soulful. ❤
Kudos to Rory for answering a lot of damn fool questions. 👏👏👏😂😂
My god……Rory was so generous with this interview……looks like it was early morning 😂
What a great guy Rory was rip brother
YEAH I would Say that RORY was paying attention in Finishing School the day they taught how to handle ANNOYING Interviewers . . Im not sure if its a translation thing or What But im pretty sure the Questions are asked with the INTENTION of getting an answer . The big sigh out of Rory a ways into it , Tells the story . Good on ya Rory . at some pont he should have said I sing the Blues after interviews like this !
Good comment!😁
